For me, the second trimester has been headache central. It's been every evening for weeks now. The only thing that helps us going to bed wearing an ice pack. Also the ligament pains. Doc said they happen faster after the first kiddo. Sometimes I can't take a step without crying on pain (Usually takes a lot more to make me cry due to pain). On top of all that, the whole house gets some kind of bug that stick around for 2 weeks and then I got pink eye with corneal abrasions(3 in one eye) over thanksgiving. I'm so done with sickness and pain!
@expandcontract sometimes shoulder pain is a sign of something else. Like right shoulder pain is a sign of gallbladder issue. If it comes with abdominal pain I’d get it looked at. I’ve been more achy in general. I’d try heat or ice. And massage
Thank you, @brichanelle. I have my MFM appointment tomorrow morning so I'll mention it then.
Like everyone headaches have also graced my life during this 2nd trimester and the flu is going around my work so I am constantly using hand sanitizer. Also I find I have been crying a lot lately...at ridiculous things! The other day I was at my cell phone provider trying to fix my phone and they couldn't help me and I cried LOL. It was slightly embarrassing.
@kaitcrystalline sometimes just hearing little kids' voices make me cry. Right after I had DS I was listening to thrift shop by Macklemore and started crying when the little kids came on "Poppin tags" *insert sweet little kid voice here* it wasn't sad tears. I have no clue what it was.
@mrskoz428 DD1 picked up a nasty virus from school, started showing symptoms on Sunday. I should have started then, but I didn't... But as soon as I did start to feel the virus myself I started taking Elderberry syrup 4x a day. DD has been sick all week, she's on the upswing but still has the nasty cough today. Me, on the other hand, started feeling symptoms Tuesday so started taking the syrup. I had a super rough day yesterday but I'm good today. So it definitely helped me kick it faster. I'm sure it also helps that I'm a grown up and understand the need to do things I don't feel like to take care of my body, like drinking lots of fluids, sleeping, etc. DD has been so reluctant to drink or eat that yesterday I started threatening an ER visit because she was barely consuming any fluids at all.
@DuchessOfCambridge I definitely think it helped me a lot. I have an herbal syrup for the kids that is elderberry-based as well, and I think it's been helping her too, she just is 5 years old and can't be told what to do. I've been trying to explain that just taking medicine isn't enough. All of the things together helped me shake it I think. The syrup, tons of fluids and as much rest as I could manage (which, with sick kids in the house honestly wasn't very much). DD2 hasn't gotten bad at all, but she's been taking her syrup, drinking everything I give her and still eating well.
Ugh the Charlie horses and leg cramps have arrived. I was woken up 3 times last night with a calf cramp so bad I had to get out of bed and stretch and walk around. Today it is still sore. I got them all the time in my last pregnancies but it still caught me by surprise.
@DuchessOfCambridge I had a clogged duct when I was pregnant with dd that turned into mastitis it was the worst pain I have ever felt in my life. Dr said it was rare, but I was the second person she had recently treated who developed clogged ducts while pregnant lucky me 😩
has anyone been on progesterone injections? This is my second week and I’m noticing the strangest smell when I pee for a day or two after. I’m assuming it’s from that and hopefully nbd.
@troystory17 Yes!! It was so wierd! I questioned my fertility nurse several times if it was normal and she said it can happen (along with cloudy urine). I did daily injections for 10wks and it took a fews days after I stopped for the smell to go away
This is kind of random, but also sort of on topic. My mother never breast fed and a few years ago she kept getting reoccurring mastitis. It's most common in breast feeding mothers, but realistically it's just an infection of the breast tissue. I was surprised when she got it because I thought only bfing women got it at the time.
@justharrison ughh it’s so gross! I was really concerned about it last week then kind of forgot when it went away, and now it’s back I keep thinking it smells like burnt hair 🤢
Ugh having the headache that wont quit. I had a small headache in Wednesday, big headache yesterday and sinus headache today. Also threw up this morning. Why does tylenol do NOTHING for me?! Waaah
@troystory17 me neither. She had it several times and if I remember correctly, they never figured out the cause, but they actually went in and removed some of the breast tissue in the area that it was reoccurring.
@eatinwatermelonseeds that's crazy! I've had 3 babies, and have never felt pain like that in my life. They ended up having to drain it, but they kept telling me to keep bfing. I couldn't even look at it never mind attach a baby to it!
@troystory17 ugh i think that's another thing I repressed about breast feeding. It was terrible. I also got milk blisters. Those were terrible, but not the same.
@troystory17 that's awful!! I got clogged ducts often while nursing but mastitis only once and it was a very quick case. I don't think I'm actually in danger of mastitis right now, the discomfort has significantly died down, I'm just a little sore now
@DuchessOfCambridge that's good its too early to add mastitis to the list! I hear you on the soreness the progesterone shots have me feeling like I'm newly pregnant.
@Stormiewinter for leg cramps I believe they recommend eating foods high in potassium or increasing your calcium. Bananas are high in potassium. I got cramps a lot with my first and I hate bananas so I added a calcium supplement and I didn’t get any more leg cramps after that. Not sure if it was the calcium or not but hey it’s worth a try. If you like bananas they are a great easy snack.

@Stormiewinter I get them when I work out but never noticed an increase during pregnancy. I used to go to the gym after work (pre kids and moving in with my now-DH) and would have a banana with peanut butter an hour before my workout and drink tons of water. It absolutely helped. I hadn't heard that about calcium. Calcium supplements make me nervous as they can do damage if taken too much depending on the type of calcium so I just try to get a lot of sources (including plants which I'm bad at) naturally in my diet. Unfortunatley, I'm at risk for both a calcium and iron deficiency since I'm still BF and pregnancies were only 12 months apart birth to conception - calcium interferes with iron absorption so I'm also trying to space them out. It's a daily game I struggle with.

You hate bananas?!! I don't think i've ever met anyone who does! Im legit shocked Lol. My nausea/ vomiting is even worse now than it was in 1st tri. And it doesn't matter whether Im on an empty stomach or not, I'm gagging regardless. Also, I'm still sleeping on my back. Im trying not to but I keep going into that position and surprisingly Im so comfortable. What gives?
@expandcontract I know a surprisingly large number of people who hate bananas! Baffles me too. I'm sorry you're still so sick I'm still okay on my back as well, I figure it's because baby isn't heavy enough to push on vessels and restrict blood flow/oxygen yet?
@expandcontract first, I don't like bananas. I like the flavor, but the texture wigs me out.
Second, sleeping on your back isn't really dangerous until later. However, sleep how you're comfortable, and listen to your body. For me, if I feel any weird twinges or pain, I turn. If I feel nauseated or lightheaded (watch out for this, it's a sign of low BP) I turn. Your body will tell you when it's not safe, just listen and move. (Of course, run this by your doctor, but this was the advice I got from my midwife last time).
^I would start to feel awful within one minute of sleeping on my back when baby got bigger. It always woke me up from the deepest sleep without fail, and I would move. Not easy to ignore, thankfully!
I'm so freaking itchy and I'm panicked about cholestasis. Like, laying awake at night for an hour straight nearly scratching the skin off my thighs. The other night I had to get up in the middle of the night to shower so I could slather baby oil all over. My thighs and forearms have a rash or hives, and it itches SO SO much. I was going to call my doctor yesterday but it seemed better, then this evening it started getting bad again. My legs are so red and blotchy. Reading about cholestasis freaked me out and now I don't think I can see a doctor until next week. I've been trying to convince myself my body is used to Florida weather and it's just wigging out in the dry Ohio winter, but I don't want to write off something potentially serious. I know someone on this board had it previously, does anyone remember who?
Because I can't sleep because of the itchiness, I'm researching. I think it's more likely that I have PUPPS then what I posted above (obviously I'll still be talking to my doctor about this). However from what I've read, if this is PUPPS, it's an odd case. What I read said generally it starts on the stomach, typically in third trimester and much more common in first pregnancies. So...mine is almost exclusively on my thighs and forearms, nothing on my stomach, I'm definitely not in third trimester, and this is my third kid with no PUPPS before. Does anyone have experience with PUPPS? I'm researching all kinds of natural remedies and about to hyperventilate about having to deal with this for six more months. But also feeling a bit more confident that it's more likely not anything worrisome to the baby.
@imrachellea my legs itch a TON. I'm like tearing the skin off practically. I did with my son too. For me, I think it's eczema. I only get flare ups during pregnancy, but eczema is worse at night which is why that's what I think it is. It's also not uncommon to develop allergies during pregnancy. But if your itching is causing a rash, I'd wonder if it might be eczema as well. It's said to be "the itch that rashes"
@ElleJDubs I hear ya on the Tylenol thing. The only thing that has ever worked for my headaches is ibuprofen or excedrin migraine so not being able to take those sucks! Try an ice pack, it's the only thing that gives me relief right now.
Wow ladies, I had no idea there were so many people who don't like bananas! I guess I can understand about the texture, though. It is kind of weird and slimy.
@DuchessOfCambridge and @eatinwatermelonseeds thank you for the info on back sleeping. I couldn't remember exactly when it starts effecting baby. Everything I've read though, says to avoid it starting 2nd tri so I was confused. Im quite sure I stopped sleeping on my back with DD in 2nd tri. And I think I know why Im still doing it this time around..... because I don't have my snoogle. My husband still hasn't retrieved it from storage. He NEEDS to get it today because Im so uncomfortable.
@imrachellea Im sorry I don't have any advice on PUPPS. I just know that one of my friends had it in one of her pregnancies. She was miserable. I seriously hope you don't have that or cholestasis. The fact that it's mainly on your thighs makes me think that its eczema or an allergic reaction or just severely dry skin. You sound like you're miserable though so I think you should page your doctor today. At the very least, she can let you know what OTC stuff you can use in the meantime before she sees you. Good luck, my friend. Itching is torture!
@imrachellea I’ve been doing baby oil on my stomach and breasts with cocoa butter lotion over that and it’s helped tremendously with the itchy, dry skin!
I’m experiencing hip and lower back soreness. I’m assuming from sleeping on my sides as I am typically a belly sleeper. Anyone else experiencing this? FTM and very small petite frame. I just ordered a body pillow so hoping that will give some relief.
@heavenlytee617 yes! FTM and very small as well as a usual belly sleeper. My hips and back don’t like the change in position at all! My pillow helps but if I stay too long on one side, my hips still suffer. Hope the pillow brings you some relief!
@eatinwatermelonseeds I've never had eczema before, not sure if it's possible to get it only during pregnancy? The only reason I'd think it might be that over PUPPS is that I don't have it on my stomach at all. But the Google images I saw of PUPPS look exactly like me. Last night I itched myself raw and when my legs were hurting more than itching is when I finally could go to sleep 😣
@mrskoz428 I've actually been using baby oil like crazy which I only ever do during pregnancy. Usually I'd start using it when my belly was getting itchy but the belly hasn't really been a problem yet.
I'm going to see if my doctor has hours today that I can talk to the normal nurse line, it seems silly to call the emergency line for itching, but I definitely want to get in next week if I can.
I have been eating bananas in my cereal because the texture bothers me less that way, but I think I was dehydrated. I had a super salty meal that night and not nearly enough water. Apparently potatoes have a lot of potassium too so I am going to be buying some of those this week too. I live potatoes!
@imrachellea I had eczema as a kid, but not as an adult. Only while pregnant. For me it's only my legs. But it's INTENSE. Like, I've cried, I've made myself bleed. My son has eczema, and this is exactly what he does on a regular basis. His skin is so dry and so itchy he will spend all night scratching sometimes and there's nothing that helps. Of course see your doctor, but for me, I think it's just the increased hormones messing with my skin. They can increase dryness and itching. I watch out for the location. Cholestasis is mostly hands and feet (belly too?) And pupps is more belly. I may talk to my doctor too. I never thought to last time, despite having friends with cholestasis, just based on the location of my itching. My fear is my itching is why DS has eczema and now this one will too 😂 completely irrational, but it's there.
@eatinwatermelonseeds Yeah the lack of anything at all on my hands and feet is what is giving me reason to think I likely don't need to worry about cholestasis. Ama nothing on my belly makes me question PUPPS despite it around like out in everything else. I don't even feel it almost at all during the day which is why I don't think to call, then at night, like you, I'm scratching myself to bleeding. I'll be calling my doctor first thing Monday for sure.
