Midwife Mamas?

2»

Re: Midwife Mamas?

  • I used a midwife/birthing center with my last pregnancy and will do so again with this one. Even though I wasn’t successful at delivering at the birthing center last time, the care I received throughout my pregnancy and during my very long labor was incredible.
I had a really similar experience with my first. It was definitely hard to be with a midwife and still have things end in an emergency c-section! I’ll be with midwives again this time trying for a VBAC as I live in France and it’s rare to be followed by an OB unless there is a very high risk situation.

  • @frenchbaby18 I hope you’re VBAC is smooth and successful. We are trying for a VBAC as well. We believe positioning played a big part in stalling my last labor so hopefully we have a different outcome this time. I labor for 60 hours last time, bee won’t allow that again this time however. I was so fatigued by the end and it wasn’t a good start to having a little one. We plan to cap my labor at 24 hours this time.
  • @frenchbaby18 @NicholeL16 It seems like the board might benefit from a VBAC thread at some point, I'm also trying for one. I hope we are all successful <3
  • I love how many people are leaning towards the natural and midwife approach in here! In my J15 bmb there was ONE other momma!

My first was in a hospital with CNM. We were able to find a "baby friendly" hospital so everything went pretty well aside from a nurse trying repeatedly to hook me up to antibiotics after I had (with scientific knowledge) refused them. Luckily DH was in the room and on top of it. He said he would have wrestled her if he had to

My second was a home waterbirth with the best midwife in the world (she was my doula for my hospital birth simple because she didn't have privileges at the hospital and we weren't brave enough yet for a home birth.)

I will never, ever choose another way now. Homebirth, right in my bedroom please.

We used to be mainstream, lol. But we took Bradley classes and felt so empowered. We started doing so much more of our own research and figuring out our own preferences and what we wanted to control. We're totally undercover hippies now with herbal remedies and homemade elderberry syrup and a million other crunchy things my friends cannot relate to :) It's the best :)

  • @SA0012 can we be best friends?! Haha! You sound so much like me! I would LOVE to do a homebirth. Just need to get my hubby on board. We used to be mainstream too, but are now just about as crunchy as they come!

We are still trying to decide between a midwife/ birthcenter and a crunchy OB/ hospital. My husband is having a hard time departing from the norm in this regard because the stakes are so high, and a coworkers wife died a couple hours postpartum during a home birth. I’m praying he comes around so that we can both be on the same page and on this journey together!
  • @smoochiemama16 Do any of your local midwifery groups offer birth center and home birth? The place I chose does both and I was able to ask all sorts of questions about the likelihood of emergencies, how they watch and prepare for them and what happens in the case of an emergency. Often, one thing to consider, is that it isn't uncommon that the deaths that occur during home birth or birth center could have also occurred in a hospital. Asking about retained placenta is a good starting place.
  • @mamanbebe Yes! The one we are heavily considering does offer both. They have a pamphlet with statistics and went over all of the things they watch for, also went over what happens in emergencies etc. All of it was very impressive, I think my husband is just having a hard time wrapping his head around the whole thing still! He’s very much a worrier.
  • @smoochiemama16 That is totally understandable. My husband was the one who would have been into a home birth for us last time but it wasn't until we actually had a hospital experience that I wish we had gone another route. This is a really good documentary on home birth with midwives that I just watched that could be helpful:

I know they have it on Amazon Prime and iTunes but also you can watch it for free on the "tubi" appletv app.

And the Business of Being Born series are really good too :)
  • Hi! I had a midwife care my entire pregnancy, labor, and delivery with my son and I was overwhelmingly pleased with my care. They were caring, kind, took the time to make me feel comfortable, and most of all very knowledgeable. I’m lucky in that the hospital where I delivered (and also work) has both CNMs and OB physicians so I was able to choose my care and have an OB readily available in case of emergency c-section. It was important to me to deliver in a hospital as I work with OB patients so it was great to be able to choose midwife care. I look forward to the same great care this time also!
  • @smoochiemama16 Hi, yes! Let's be besties! :) Wanna swap weirdo recipes? ;-)
See if you can talk YH into taking Bradley classes. My DH scoffed at first because it was a 2 hour class for 12 weeks but MAN is it eye opening. He was 1000% a "whatever the doctor says is best" kind of guy and only went because I begged him to. 3 or 4 classes in he was trying to talk me into a homebirth! Even if you think you'd prefer another method of pain management it's very much one of those "take what you want, leave what you don't" situations and the education about all things birth was transforming.

Unfortunately, this wasn't meant for me this time around and I'll be heading back to the Trying to get Pregnant boards. But it was a lovely short stay here with you ladies and I hope you all have the most natural and WONDERFUL births that you're hoping for. Every woman deserves that. Take care  <3
