Ask Me Anything thread!

Re: Ask Me Anything thread!

  • @galactickates I have some Mossimo brand fold-over yoga pants from Target that I love! They have good stretch, and when the belly is big I just unfold the waistband so it goes over the belly instead of under.
  • Loading the player...
  • Yeah, they're definitely not stretchy like mat pants. I just can't bring myself to purchase $30 maternity pj bottoms 'cause it's such a rip off even though some of the sets are super cute. What about buying a set that doubles as mat pj's and nursing pj's that way the cost is more justifiable? I've seen sets like that at Motherhood. Or just weaing nighties and thick sweat socks like I do to keep warm haha...I'm sure it's the sexiest thing DH has ever seen lol. Some may find this gross but DH has old boxers that are all stretched out in the elastic waistband so I've been wearing those (I mean, they're clean, of course!) with t-shirts to bed too.

I love my yoga maternity pants from Gap. They go over the stomach. galactickates but they are a little thin. It doesn't bother me, since they are black and I don't wear short shirt with them. They are so soft and I wear them all the time.

    https://www.gap.com/browse/product.do?pid=489058

With the code THANKS they are $16 today. I'm not a huge Gap fan these days but some of their maternity stuff is good.
  • I sleep in just a pair of underwear.  :D I do that pregnant or not, though.

  • I have a nightgown to sleep in but we watch a lot of tv downstairs and it gets cold.  Plus i'm always hanging out of the top.  I need something I can lounge around the house in more then I need it for sleeping.  @greenhillgirl that link for gap is perfect!
  • Listen @galactickates “home is where the pants aren’t.”  :D

I’m only half kidding and in the same boat. I may not always choose to go pantless at home on purpose. My loose sweats and pjs are tight now. I like Old Navy yoga pants but I could not sleep in them.
  • @galactickates - I got Maternity Cinched-Waist Lounge Pants from Old Navy. They were $24.99 (plus they have sales all the time. The have vertical drawstrings at the bottom so you can either pull them up over your bump or Cinch them down. They are super comfy and I am thinking I am going to buy a 2nd pair. A bit thin for this time of year in New England, but they are great for lounging around the house.

  • I second Zulily. It's where I've ordered most of my maternity clothes. I haven't purchased anything this pregnancy and luckily kept everything from before. My regular yoga/pajama pants are definitely too tight now around the waist even if I pull them way below the belly. I bought a pair at motherhood maternity that are cute but they are too tight now too. The cheap Zulily pants are perfect.
  • I bought pajama pants from gap and they are super comfy. I really recommend them
  • @galactickates
    Giant Tiger, Ardene's. 😊
  • I sleep naked, but for comfy pants I just wear my usual comfy pants (I need maternity yoga pants, though) and just have the waistband under my belly. It worked throughout last pregnancy, and working so far again.

  • Old navy, motherhood clearance, If u can find someone doing a closeout of lularoe tall and curvy leggings... I also have just non maternity xl old navy pj pants that I wear under the bump.
  • Reading all these birth stories is soooo sweet/special, but raises so many questions! Is it really true that lactation brownies, mama's milk tea, dark beer, etc. work to increase milk supply/get your milk to come in? I'm kind of obsessed with wanting to BF so I'll do anything to increase supply & get it started.
  • I like that you're questions are so generous and thinking about baby @kianarain! :D Mine are more about how long can I wait as a FTM to go to the hospital once my water breaks and I'm having contractions. I live less than 5 min away so I'm determined not to go too early... but also, high blood pressure, blah blah blah...

    Andrea -- FTM at 39!

  • @wkuandrea lolol but that's a really good question too!! I live like 10 minutes away & I've heard once you get there you can't eat sooooo I'd like to maximize time at home because pregnancy has made me a bottomless pit
  • @wkuandrea I’m in the same boat - I live really close to the hospital and really don’t want to be there forever since I’m sure I’d probably be more comfortable laboring at home, but at the same time I don’t want to have the baby at home or have some other complication because I waited too long.
  • @kianarain I think the number one thing to help your milk supply is getting enough water, and enough good calories. Things like oats, brewer’s yeast, flax seed, and Mother’s Milk tea can be helpful too.

As for staying home vs heading to hospital, chat with your dr or doula about it, but our Bradley coach had a good rule of thumb called “4-1-1” so contractions every four minutes, each lasting around 1 minute, consistent for at least 1 hour. Some people feel more comfortable with “5-1-1” while some people (myself included) also pay more attention to their ability to cope with the intensity of the contractions.
  • @kianarain I bought lactation cookies, put brewers yeast in smoothies, did all the tricks and can’t say for sure if they worked- at least the cookies were good! I didn’t need to do any of that until I started pumping at work, and did end up pumping out exactly what I needed, never could pump much extra.

Drinking water is key as is eating enough; i tracked calories to make sure I ate enough food- especially on days I worked out
  • I was at home for most of the time with DD1, and followed the 4-1-1 rule timing. It was nice to stay at home but sucked because it was in the middle of the night and DH just slept while I was in labor!

My hospital would have let me eat; but I wasn’t hungry during labor.

This time I’ve been instructed to come in a little sooner since I progressed quick with DD1- full birth story to follow on that thread!
  • I never tried any of the milk enhancing remedies out there, but I did drink beer because I like it! Also when pumping pump from both breasts at once. My SIL said it made her feel like a cow so she did one at a time and her supply was half of mine. Who knows why, but I know that was a difference.

I haven't posted my birth stories yet, but as far as when to go to the hospital, I think you just trust your gut. If they send you home, then so be it. I couldn't trust my contractions either time so it really was just gut instinct for me. I wasn't in the hospital long before either of my births, maybe 2 to 3 hours?

@kianarain I agree that drinking a ton of water and getting enough calories are key. Mother’s milk tea made DD gassy. I also found that I couldn’t go too low on carbs, especially is I cut them too quickly. There are people that say they can maintain milk supply on eating keto, but I was not one of them.

  • @kianarain A coworker showed that to me recently. I am feelin it.
  • @kianarain there is a local lactation organization here and I am taking two of their classes in December because I am also focused on BF. As a dietitian I know I have to keep my calories up. They actually recommend 500 extra calories during the first 6 months of breast feeding.
  • Has anyone needed a Perinatal appointment? specifically, one with an ultrasound? If so, do you recall if they bill that as preventative? I have my first perinatal ultrasound scheduled for tomorrow and didn't even think to question if it's covered. I called insurance and they said if they bill it preventative then it's covered, if not, I have to pay out of pocket. It's an ultrasound to SEE if I have too much amniotic fluid or not, and if so, try to find a reason.

  • @galactickates I bought some maternity and larger plus size jammy and lounge pants from old navy in a 3x (I was a 1-2x pre pregnancy). Elastic and drawstring waistbands are fab because I know they’ll be comfortable for end of prego but I can tighten now. I also bought some Hanes men’s boxers in size 3x on amazon. They’re hilariously huge on me but super comfy to sleep in because underwear are so constricting in bed. I just roll them up a few times and perfect!

My wife and I have conceived a babe with my body and frozen donor sperm through IUI, with medication support (clomid, ovidrel, and injections of progesterone)

    IUI #1, #2, and #3: Dec 2017, Jan 2018, and Feb 2018 - all BFN
HSG Test: April 2018 - all clear!

Damn, why is the solution for everything eating right & good water intake? Just for once I was hoping the answer was brownies and beer.

@molosmiles lmao I INSTANTLY thought of this....  "bitch, I'm a cow"...our January anthem

#ded. I just laughed out loud and woke up my toddler. Luckily she fell back asleep.
  • @kianarain maybe I’m just way behind the times, but I had never seen/heard that and just looked it up and omg haha. Now that’s all I’m going to be thinking about with breastfeeding!
  • @sweetyjenj with DD, I had to see one once and I don't know how they billed it but I had to pay my regular co-pay amount (which they sent me a bill for that after the appointment), but I never had to pay anything else.

  • @sweetyjenj I have had to see an MFM/perinatologist this pregnancy, and they bill just like any other referred specialist -- most insurance, in network, is just a regular co-pay and then your percentage (like 80/20 after deductible) for tests etc.

  • Does everyone have NSTs towards the end of their pregnancies?

I only got to 34 weeks with ds, so I never had one but my sister told me she got them in the last couple weeks even though she had no  complications.

The only people I know who had them had some kind of risk factor (GD, AMA, etc.).

  • I’ve never had a NST and I’ve even gone to 41.5 weeks.
  • @jgil85 I had 2 with DD and one was about 2 wks before her EDD because they asked me if she's been "as active as usual lately" and I wasn't prepared to answer that, and under pressure it's hard to answer for sure and I was like, "I think so? I mean, maybe not AS active, but still moves from time to time. I don't remember the last time, though.." and so they did it to be safe.
Second time was at 40+2, since it was past her EDD

  • I can I unload a huge dilemma i'm facing?

    Ok great!

I have a Dr I love.  I'm 100% comfortable with this Dr and the birthing center which is attached to the hospital.  I do understand that it's possible I don't even see my Dr, as we get whomever is on call. This hospital is right next to my work.  5 minute drive.  But... my work is 45 minutes from my house.  Their partnering NICU, if needed,  is 30 minutes away... which puts it an hour and half almost from our house.  This concerns me if anything where to happen, he's going to be so far from our house.

I have 2 other great hospitals within a 10/15 minute drive of my house.

I'm going to tour all 3 and talk to my Dr on Wednesday about this as well.

I don't need any snarky well that seems easy comments.  It's not.  I really love my Dr, so much so that i'm even considering giving birth 45 minutes from my house.

I'm just wondering has/is anyone faced with this same Predicament and what did you end up choosing and how did it turn out?

Also note,  I do realize that i'll probably only see my Dr for a very short time if at all.  The birthing suites are really nice and staff is amazing. I just don't know what to do and i'm really scared of making the wrong decision

  • @galactickates I made a similar choice. This is my third, so I’m a little more comfortable with what to expect with my previous labors (one was 10 hours and one was 12 hours). There is a very small community hospital about 15 min away. I’ve heard their doctors are great but there’s is no NiCU and it’s a lot older/dated. There is another hospital 45 min away with a full NICU and huge awesome birth/recovery suites and basically all the options for delivery I might want. Doctors also highly recommended. I chose to go to the farther hospital with the hopes that I will have plenty of time to make it there. My backup plan is that if things deteriorate quickly and I won’t make it, I will just go to the closer hospital as an emergency delivery.
  • @galactickates @beachmama14 I would say I have a similar situation though not as far.  I live 5mins from our nearest hospital which has a small NICU but I am planning to go to a larger hospital 35 minutes away with newer birthing suites and large NICU.  My doctor delivered my first at the larger hospital and since he was great and I was so happy with him as my doctor and my experience we will go there again. Especially as he doesn't deliver at the hospital down the road from me.

Same as beachmama14 if I feel I wont make it to the larger hospital in time then I will go to the closer one as an emergency delivery.
