Re: Random Week of 10/8

  • @expandcontract I was JUST thinking of her. Hope all is well and she's just enjoying her vacation. I feel like i remember she said something about not being on much while she's gone but I could be making that up.

  • @k2k2tog so glad my school still does A Halloween parade and the teachers decorate their trunks for a trunk or treat. My teaching team usually dresses up and we invite parents in to do some Halloween related math games in the class before the parade  (then they can get their kids in the costumes for us).  I understand if schools have large religious populations that don’t participate but ds1’s school is thinking of getting rid of Halloween because it interferes with academics and it makes me sad because school should be fun too.
  • Get rid of Halloween in school? I always thought school should just be cancelled for Halloween! It deserves an official day off!

@DuchessOfCambridge That airport experience sounds terrible. I'm sorry! And seriously, the average adult is more annoying than a baby on the plane anyway.
  • @Stormiewinter I'm pretty sure my school has done it out of respect for religious and cultural groups who don't participate. And, they don't stop teachers from talking about it and doing halloween related crafts, though I think most don't because we have a few families who are Jehovah Witness and cannot participate at all in Halloween events.

Getting rid of halloween in favour of academics is ridiculous. Fun is such an important part of kids' development.

  • @DuchessOfCambridge oh no!  Baby/Kid jet lag is the absolute worst, and then add in all the extras.  I'm so sorry girl.

When we came home in May, my 5 year old didn't sleep a wink on the flight.  We left at 2:00pm Amsterdam time so by the time she felt like it was her actual bedtime it was getting near time for decent.  Not quite, like we still had a couple hours left to go, but she's much too curious of a kid to settle down quickly on a packed airplane so she was just nearly falling asleep when we landed.  Then we had to get her up to go stand in the customs line up which shouldn't have been long but it took FOREVER.  3 year old was whining, and the 5 year old was crying at us from the stroller (I was wearing DD2 so DD1 could sit).  The battery on her iPod touch, which she calls her phone, was just under 20% so it was in the red which in her overtired state meant it was fully dead.  We tried to explain that it would last until we cleared the line, offered her our phones to use just to give her something to watch and calm down but she was just done.  People kept giving us sympathetic smiles and saying to her, Oh, honey, I know how you feel, until she screamed at the top of her lungs "THE ONLY THING I NEED IS TO CHARGE MY PHONE!!!!"  Then the people next to me were stifling their laughter while also side-eying me that my 5 year old had a phone and was apparently severely addicted to it.

I am a huge supporter of traveling with kids, and I wouldn't blink at doing another overseas trip with them, but sometimes it is really tough.  I hope you guys make it home soon and its not too big of a struggle to get your LO back on North America time.

  • @DuchessOfCambridge omg! You had the trifecta! Im so sorry.  People can feel so entitled sometimes.  Are you guys gone safe,  now? Also,  did your son pick up a stomach bug?

  • Those of you traveling with kids are superheroes. We flew with DD1 ONCE just before she turned 2 - so we could take advantage of taking her along as a lap baby - and I've been scared off from doing it since. I'm not big on travel myself, so adding in a toddler that won't sleep, screamed through take-off and landing, pooped at least 5 times, and got bored of all the activities we brought for her after 20 minutes was like hell.

  • Ahh @DuchessOfCambridge I’m so sorry! That sounds absolutely horrible. Having a delayed flight sucks enough when you’re alone. Fingers crossed you’ll be home to your own bed soon.

  • @k2k2tog don’t be scared.  It’s definitely one of those things where the kids get better the more they do it, and one bad flight doesn’t necessarily mean they’ll all be bad.  I flew a lot with DD1 before DD2 came along.  The way DH’s work schedule is though I often flew ahead and he would come for a shorter time.  Even though I had mostly positive experiences flying with DD1 (we had one flight where I literally stood in the back galley rocking and bouncing her as she screamed the entire 3h45m flight, but the others went pretty seamlessly) I was scared as hell to do it alone with 2 so I never did.  I did lots of road trips just the 3 of us, but was always too chicken to fly.  After our trip in May I have regained my confidence for air travel though.

  • It's the first cold night and there is already a mouse in this crappy old house I live in.  :'(
  • Thanks everyone ❤️ @expandcontract he definitely has something, H and I both feel fine but on Tuesday he was vomiting and then stopped for 36 hours only to start again today and add in diarrhea. We called his ped while we were abroad and they wanted us to come in (lol) but I probably will take him in tomorrow. We are not home yet but we are sitting on a plane that is supposedly taking off soon.

@k2k2tog H and I were big travelers before DS and have only slowed down a little. We definitely have to do it differently and there are of course times when it sucks (like today) but overall we love it too much to stop. We prioritize traveling over many other things we could do for fun like concerts or games etc.

  • Im going to strangle my oldest.

She had a 3 day weekend but decides to tell me yesterday her science fair project information is due this friday.

Guess what we have been up doing? Making 4 batches of slime.

Actually we made 6 but trashed the 1st 2. Because she wrote the recipe down completely wrong qnd wrote down every measurement wrong and added ingredients the recipe didnt call for. So we not only did the experiments we also had to redo all of her papers on what the experiment was going to be.

    Im so fucking done!

  • @DuchessOfCambridge yeah, I think part of my issue is that I'm not a big traveller to begin with. I find the whole packing, and stressing about flight times, and worrying that I'm going to misplace my passport in the bathroom thing a hassle, so whenever we go on a big trip, the process of getting there overshadows it. And then add kids in and it's even worse. Maybe if I actually liked travelling before kids, I would still enjoy it now.

@psychobutthead how old is she? She's pretty lucky to have a mother who will help her save her butt after slacking for a whole weekend!

They recently made space in the library for the prep teacher to have desk space and, on one hand, it's nice to have some company, but on the other, pregnancy has made me soooo gassy and it stinks.

  • I love traveling but the actual part of traveling (flight,  train,  roadtrip) makes me super nervous.  I can't imagine what our first trip as a family will be like. There's actually a wedding in Florida in June that we're supposed to go to.  I just realized we won't be able to go because new baby don't even be a month old.  Entire family will be there except us.  Boo. Has anyone traveled with a brand new baby?

  • @expandcontract DD1 came with me to a wedding (2 hr drive away) at 2 weeks old, and then I flew across the country with her to visit some extended family at 4 weeks.  There are mixed opinions about flying with a newborn before the first round of vaccinations, but I felt like I wasn’t too worried about going out in public with her and given how tiny and immobile she was, it was pretty easy for me to keep her clear of other folks and their germs.  My mom, very cleverly, insisted on stuffing my nursing pillow into a carry-on bag.  I told her it was such a waste of space but it turned out to be amazing!  I nursed during take-off, then as most newborns do she fell right asleep and was able to keep her laying comfortably in my lap on the pillow rather than holding her for hours in my arms with no support.

  • @kbeers13 we are going to a friends house for halloween, and we have to dress up. I think I may be a basic bitch and be a witch. I've never dressed up as one and i have a grey wig that should pair well with that. Or I was going to buy one of those silly food costumes and be a taco.

  • Well, I just had two students come up to me after I said I “hurt myself” and can’t do any lifting and that I’ll be sitting a lot and say, “Our moms think your pregnant.” I mean, I’ve been taking a lot of half days for appointments, but come on! Guess parents will be finding out at parent, teacher conferences.

  • ugh. Last time I traveled alone with my toddler (18 months), I ended up getting sick in the airport bathroom before my flight. (into the changing table garbage can no less. I felt like mother of the year  ) Combination anxiety, antibiotics on an empty stomach, and a few adult beverages the night before. Luckily she was an angel and people took it pretty easy on me (at least those that spoke to me). Probably because I looked like death warmed over. Funny enough, DD was a nightmare on the way home when it was me and DH to take care of her.

  • @expandcontract I love seeing new places but agreed, I don’t like the actual mode of transportation to get there.

I’ve got a stomach bug of some kind and it’s making today impossible. H is on his way home to parent so I can just lay in bed and occasionally vomit. Counting down the minutes til he’s here, this has been the longest morning of my life.

  • @sleepy33 Yup. I had the white russian too! (well ...almond milk because I was wearing my costume at work)

  • @DuchessOfCambridge you poor thing! The germs and getting sick is the other part of traveling that I hate.  Thank god your husband is coming home soon iA. Im actually like this every single day,  lol, counting down the minutes until my husband gets home so he can take over.  I hope you get some rest and feel better soon.  It's tough parenting while sick!

  • I've decided I'm getting a secret after school snack. Should it be McDonald's or Taco Bell? We are having Japanese for dinner, if that plays into it at all.
  • @liliumstargazer13 Ohhh I vote McDonald's! But only because I'm craving greasy fries right now.

  • @liliumstargazer13 I vote taco Bell. I ordered from a sub shop some high guy created. It's amazing. I wanted to get one with lunchmeat covered in crushed Doritos but I can't bring myself to eat lunch meat, no matter how toasted it is. 😭 I got a garlic chicken pineapple teriyaki sandwich thing. I'm actually really excited 😂
  • @liliumstargazer13 Taco Bell, primarily because I'm craving queso and you could get something along those lines there. Crunchwrap supreme.........
