Re: PAIF Graduates - New Mommies - October 2018

  • @gfgrump a hard phase.. my daughter just screamed, I borrowed every contraption. I’d put her safely in the rock n play, turn on the vacuum (seriously it actually calmed her from a 100 to a 10) and I would walk away for 5 min for my sanity. Feel free to call your dr though, both my kids ended up having a dairy sensitivity around 6 weeks that led to SCREAMIMG - my daughter just unhappy, Graham painful gas. We thought it was reflux but dairy intolerance (which passed at 9 months) for both. My daughter still screamed after we solved that (she’s a fiesty one...) but Graham was so much better so worth a call if it keeps up :)

I don't think you look that tired! The pup on the other hand....-zzzz-

So, my mom is watching Anne today so I can get a break. I dropped her off 2 hours ago and I'm already missing her and wanting to go pick her up! I suppose I should actually rest up, but I miss my baby!

  • Loving loving the cute baby and pet pics! We don’t have any pets due to allergies and right now I’m happy not to have something else to take care of!

@gfgrump it’s probably a phase but if you do get the snoo just make sure you can return it if he hates it. Nothing works 100% for all babies and I’d hate for you to shell out that much money for nothing. Ozi hates almost everything and will only tolerate the rock and play for a limited time. We therefore have a lot of useless gadgets hanging around just hoping that he will come to like them eventually. You can also look for one second hand or borrow one if possible just to test it out and see if he likes it.
  • @2MomsHoping - so cute!!!
@mbradfo2 - I remember the first time I had my mom watch Parker, I forgot to take my pump so I decided to go home a pump first, then pick him up. It was the first time since he was born that I had been alone in the house and it felt sooooo weird!! I almost regretted it haha

  • @gfgrump SNOO has a 30-day money back guarantee. I bought one for my son when he was about a month old and I don’t know if it was worth it. My son was neither a terrible sleeper nor a good sleeper. He would wake up frequently (every 2-3 hours) but he won’t fuss much and goes right back to sleep after feeding.  A friend of mine has one and her baby slept through the night in SNOO. But he might just be a good sleeper anyway.

  • Loving all the pics with babies and puppies.

So... so much for “I’m not going to let my baby cry it out.”  Took my son to his 6-month appointment last Monday and the doctor told me at his age he should be sleeping 6-8 hour stretch at night. She suggested that we sleep train him as she thinks that he is nursing for comfort, not due to hunger. So we will start that this weekend. Any suggestions on how to sleep train without letting the baby cry for more than 5... or 10 minutes? Just the thought of him crying makes me feel sick.

Our doctor said that baby's cries will be self-extinguishing as long as there's not something actually wrong (wet diaper, hungry, etc).

One technique is to go in to check on baby when they cry, but gradually make your "check-ins" quicker and less frequent. We didn't need to go that route though; I usually set a timer for 15 minutes and let her fuss. If she's ready to sleep, she'll calm down before 15 minutes. If not, I go and get her and rock her a bit in the chair, rinse and repeat. Also, I'm talking about actual tear-filled eyes crying; I let her fuss in her crib and roll around until she falls asleep. We got our advice from my mom and she's able to get Anne down for 2 naps a day when she's watching her (unlike me) so it seems to work! It takes time, but she now goes to sleep pretty quickly when we put her down and usually stays asleep for 8-10 hours at night (she doesn't nap much during the day).

We did have a couple episodes of middle of the night awakening when she was cutting her second tooth, but the doctor said to let her fuss and that she'll fall back asleep within 10-15 minutes. Haven't had an episode yet to try that on, though.

  • @cashewchicken there are ways to sleep train without crying it out. Someone in another thread on here recommend Sleeping through the Night by Jodi Mindell. It has some great ideas. I don't really know how well any of this works as we've done sleep training. Mackenzie slept through the night at 10 weeks. When she reached 6 months, we started having issues for to teething, leaps, and colds. With Mackenzie, every time she cried it was because she was hungry. I'd nurse and she go back down for the most part. She didn't always eat well during the day, so I didn't want to refuse her nursing at night just in case it was hunger not comfort.

Also, every kid is different and has different needs at different times. There's no one size fits all solution here. If crying it out isn't right for you guys, try something else instead. Don't feel like you have to use that method.
  • @cashewchicken we did semi cry it out with Graham as he was feeding every 45 minutes - so every sleep cycle. I just let him fuss it out for 10-15 min.. if it got intense I’d go rock him or feed him (he was 4 months). It did help a lot. However now at 11 months he still wakes 2-3x a night, he’s a tank so I know he can go all night. We’ve sleep trained and then he goes right back to his ways so I figure (hope) it’ll sort itself out eventually. If it’s before midnight for the first feed I’ll give him 10-15 min, he almost always puts himself back to sleep. It’s every waking after that he literally stands in his crib shrieking so there’s no ignoring that! You do what you’re comfortable with :) my daughter slept 12 hrs by 12 weeks but she’s a unicorn so every baby is so so different.
  • @businesswife welcome and congrats on your little girl!! My little girl is almost 5 months and I still can’t believe she’s actually mine and made me a mom (and if I actually think about it I still get teary eyed). Enjoy all the baby snuggles and hope your c-section recovery goes well!
  • @BusinessWife welcome! Welcome! So glad baby girl is here now.
@cashewchicken we are just now doing a bit of sleep training. Now when Bryson wakes up at around 2-4am we just go in and out his bink in when he is fussing and he falls back asleep after that. If he is truly crying then we will feed. He is still waking up super early in the morning. This morning was 5am or so. Some days it’s 6 or 7am but never later than that. Yawn but the night waking up is getting way better.
TTC 4 years. 7 failed IUI's with either Clomid, Femara and/or Trigger Shots. Started IVF journey in February 2017. Polyps removed in May. 1st IVF Transfer September 26th. BFP. Expected due date 6/14/18. Baby boy born 5/25/18 at 6 lb 9 oz. My bundle of joy.
  • Yay @BusinessWife!!! Congrats on your little girl and welcome to the new thread!
  • @BusinessWife congrats and welcome over here!!!
  • Does anyone have suggestions for bottles you love? Baby girl seems to do best with dr.browns the small nipple seems to work well for both her gas and latch issues but I HATE THEM (so many annoying parts). I need to buy some larger bottles and would prefer to buy something besides Dr.browns. So far I have tried:  Avent naturals, nuk standard nipple, mam, boon nursh, brezza, and, ComoTomo.

@cashewchicken I’m certainly no expert on sleep training but we don’t pick her up unless she is legit crying. We loosely followed the recommendations in bringing up Bebe. When she does cry I try an pop a pacifier in her mouth and bump the side of the pack and play to wiggle it a bit. If that doesn’t soothe her we pick her up and do the change/feed/rocking combo.  She sleeps pretty reliability through the night, not sure if it’s the technique or luck.  I hope it goes ok for you. I know how hard it is to hear your little one cry.

@businesswife I was wondering when you would make the leap over here. I’ve missed you!  I still can’t wrap my mind around saying my daughter. I feel like an imposter, like me a mom? Is this real?  Just so happy for you welcoming you little girl.

  • Omg how cute are all the pups with your kids, just darling!!! Am I the only one with a lik kitty cat? I actually take pics of them on a real camera so need to use my phone next time.  She thinks her changing table is her bed so I share it.

welcome @BusinessWife I was wondering where u were! It’s a girl yay!! So over the moon for you!!

@gfgrump it’s all trail and error.  I swear my baby hated every item and stayed in nothing! She’s now 4 months and lil by lil she does stay in everything for almost 10 min at times.  It’s not long but an improvement from screaming!! She even napped in the swing a few times....I just keep trying as it changes all the time!

@2MomsHoping wow uve really tried lots of bottles! So far I like the comotomo one, she takes a lil longer to feed with it and I can clearly see where she’s at and when it’s done....they are pretty pricey so I only got the small ones.

Im very lucky that so far baby girl is a lil piggy and drinks everything I give her BM, formula, powdered formula warm or cold.  I’ve learned that it’s better to give my bm first and formula after as she spits up a lot if I reverse it.  However the last 2 days she threw up like 5x after a feeding and I’m not sure what the problem is.  Once I gave 4.5 oz as she didn’t eat for a longer span and figured she’d be extra hungry and my mom always says I’m not giving her enough with 4 so I gave in and I think it was too much for her and that was the issue but last night that wasn’t the case and it was the sensitive formula and she threw up 5x.  I needed quite a few paper towels to clean the floor why I say throw up and not spit up. Should I be concerned or it’s a fluke?  I’m trying to keep her upright after feeding but it was 1am and I really wanted her to be sleeping so she was laying.

Im very impressed with everyone’s baby sleeping in cribs the minute I try to put her down she opens her eyes giving me the look of don’t you do it!! And I try it she screams and then it’s the routine of trying to get her back to sleep. I know it’s bad but I think she’s still too young to cry it out.  My other issue is she’s constantly waking up looking for the boob.  Anyone else have that issue? I’ve tried the pacifier, finger, burpie to give my nips a rest but she makes a face and spits everything out.  Once she starts to cry and wake herself up I know I have to give in to get her back to sleep.

All i I keep hearing is I’ve created this but it’s what has gotten us this far...not ideal but I waited forever to have her so I’m trying to enjoy her wanting her mama but it does make it hard too!!!

I did leave her for a couple of hours to run errands the other day as well and missed her terribly!! My bf had a birthday dinner and she didn’t even invite me.  At first I was a lil insulted but then appreciative I didn’t have to say no as I really wouldn’t have wanted to leave baby girl so long.  I too still get emotional all the time.  This precious gift is finally here, this joy that consumed my life of ttc for years is here...it’s strange...it became so apart of my life I feel like I’m still adjusting.  Gd I love her so!!!

  • @Hopeful_mom Hi!!!  I know you're in a different stage than us, but when she wakes looking for a nipple, I just give her the boob.  If she's just stirring / fussing, I will give her a moment to try and settle herself before I do anything, and if just a bink and/fixing her clothes/ swaddle solves it, then great.  But if she is actually crying or just showing those sleepy feeding cues, without actual fussing even, then I figure she may really be getting hungry.  Sometimes she's stirring hourly, some nights she will go 4 hours!  So I try to take it as it comes still.  We are downstairs yet to transition the whole family back up where her crib is, but for now, seems like if I nurse her to sleep and gently burp, I can most cases, just gently put her down in the bassinet part of the pack n play, and maybe sing or shush a bit.  Sometimes it take a few attempts if her belly's not a totally full, and / or the bink if I know her belly is, but more or less, that's what's been sorta working for us.  For now! Lol
  • Thanks ladies for your comments.
welcome @BusinessWife Congrats on your baby girl!

@mbradfo2 Sometimes he just yells out from nightmares or whatever and we do let him cry that out as he does go back to sleep right away. The tough one is when he wakes up approx 3 hours after the last feed. He’s so accustomed to eating every 3 hours that he howls quite a bit and I just give in after 2 min of crying. 8-10 hours of sleep sounds amazing though.

@persnickity My son goes back down right after feeding, too. That’s why I thought he was hungry all this time. Prior to me going back to work I felt like he was on track to sleeping longer, as he was feeding every 4-5 hours at night. I went back to work when he was almost 4 months old, and he reverse cycled for a while, not eating much during the day and eating more at night to make up for all the lost calories. After that his daytime feeding amount was up again but started teething (in hindsight). We started letting my husband hold him when he cries instead of nursing him and he does go right back to sleep. But that’s trading one bad habit for another, I think. Thanks for your book recommendation. Will check it out.

  • @cashewchicken some nights she sleeps 8-10 hours and some she's up every 2.5. It really depends on leaps/teething. When she nurses, she's gulping down the milk like she's starving most of the time. Those times, I assume she was hungry. We also weigh her with our bathroom scale weekly and for a while, she would alternate between gaining and losing weight, basically maintaining, for a month or two. During that time, I was concerned and really wanted her to have access to nursing to help keep her gaining.
  • @2MomsHoping we used the life factory bottles and loved them, but @JWatt5 mentioned they weren't great for formula.
  • @2MomsHoping - I liked the Life Factory for breastmilk. For some reason they didn’t vent well with thicker formula but either way - same nipple as Dr Browns. We really like the Nuk Simply Natural (diff than the regular Nuk).
@cashewchicken - lots of good advice but always other options. We used Healthy asleep Habits, Happy Baby and my own instincts. Parker fed in the MOTN until about 7m and during a growth spurt he still will sometimes. He’s a bottlefed baby. I will fuss but not CIO - never have and Parker, unless it’s teeth, has been fine. Go with your gut - if you think you and your baby can handle CIO give it a go. All depends on how you want to parent - as long as they get adequate sleep in the night/day.

  • @Polythene Pam It’s comforting to know that other babies still wake up 2-3x a night. Yeah if he consistently woke up every hour then I’d definitely consider sleep training but every 3 hours is doable. It’s not great but between crying 5-10 minutes and just feeding to calm him down, we took the easy way and just fed him. But it would be nice if he slept at least 5-6 hours from midnight until early morning.

@Holls214 That’s great that his night wake up is getting better. I think for the most part my baby fusses and he’s not really crying. So we give him pacifier to see if he’ll calm down with that but often times he has to be held or nursed. Let’s see how this week will go...

@2MomsHoping Popping a pacifier and rocking the bassinet (or use an oscillating bassinet) used to work back when he was younger but lately not so much. It might be because he is teething. He will just chew on his pacifier and make grunting noises and just tosses and turns. That will last for a few minutes and then he cries and that’s when we give in and feed him.

  • We also used Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Baby - loved it for getting us on routines and my daughter followed that book to the T, such a good sleeper, solid 12 hrs by 12 weeks, I thought I did something to make that happen. HAHAHA nope. She was just a unicorn.

Graham seriously just wants to sleep on me, if he could crawl into me he would haha. He was on a glorious week long stretch of sleeping 6:30/7 till 5, nurse and back to sleep. Then he got sick and now I think teething. I’m ok CIO but like last night he was up whimpering every 5 min for a solid hour around midnight, half asleep so I thought he’d just pass out eventually. Finally nursed him for 2 minutes and he passed out and slept till 5. I’m tired but with a big sis I never get snuggles with him so I’m being 110% honest saying it’s ok. You just do what works for you :) I do think if they aren’t getting enough sleep total it’s a problem but I’m not worried over here. Just a definite snuggly baby over here haha.
  • @persnickity my baby so far has been gaining weight as he should, his weight has always been right on the growth curve for his percentile. That’s probably the reason why his doctor thinks that he can skip a meal in the middle of the night.

@JWatt5 Thanks for your recommendation! It’s not easy but we will try different approaches. Sometimes it’s hard to tell fussing from crying. I feel like he is not getting enough sleep as is, since he doesn’t sleep much during the day especially on weekends. We will see how daycare will change his nap routine (or more like establish one).

@Hopeful_mom Baby giggles are the best! My baby really loves peek-a-boo.

@2MomsHoping I’ve never tried Dr Brown’s, but can you use the nipple of that and use a different bottle instead? I really love Pigeon brand’s nipple. Its slow-flow nipple has been slow enough that my baby never preferred the bottle over my breast. I love the nipple but the bottle isn’t compatible with the Spectra flange and so I’ve been testing bottles from different brands. I’ve tested MAM and Avent and I so far like MAM bottles.

  • @2MomsHoping honestly I was miffed for
like a min but then ok as the weather was awful and I didn’t have to feel bad declining. But yes she still should’ve extended the invite.  I have many friends with kids that would never invite me to kid parties and that insulted me too! I wasn’t trying then and how can I have a relationship with ur kids if I’m not invited.  My gf wanted nights out without the kids so that’s more of when I do them.  Now there kids are old enough to babysit  :D:D:D:D

@Polythene Pam I’m thrilled to hear u have a snuggler!!  She just wants to sleep on me and even keeping her asleep is still tough!! She still has has issues it’s so annoying.  Better then what it was but still here ugh!!!

  • @cashewchicken  glad you found a bottle you like!  I had to get TWO adapters to make my joovy bottles fit the spectra, but at least now I'm pretty confident I can make any bottle fit, using one or the other, or both ;)
  • @cashewchicken @BusinessWife I used to pump into storage bags instead of bottles. That way, I could put what I needed in the fridge and freeze the rest easily. If the bottles and pump aren't compatible, you might consider that.
  • @BusinessWife congratulations on your little lady! I still look at Zoey in amazement and she's 14.5 months.

  • @BusinessWife so glad you are here. Congrats again on your daughter! I also pause in amazement every time I say ‘my son’.

@Hopeful_mom your daughter and my son are very similar. I don’t know if they are particular or we have spoiled them but I can identify with everything you post. Ozi hates pacifiers. We’ve tried all types but he acts like it’s poison when you put it in his mouth. He wants the boob for food, comfort and to go to sleep. He still hates being put down to sleep but I did take some advice from these wise ladies and bought stuff second hand on Facebook marketplace until I found something he likes. He will now sleep in the rock and play but still that’s for an hour max whereas if he’s next to me he will sleep up to 3 hours. I want to push it and make him stay down more but after a few hours of getting up every 30mins to an hour at night I usually give up and let him in the bed because I’m just exhausted. If we put him down to sleep in his bassinet (he has 2 types) or crib or swing chair he will wake up and cry immediately. He also hates swaddling and will fight and struggle until at least his arms are free. When he is awake he will go down for a limited time, like up to 20 mins max to play on a playmat or bouncer. I go back to work next week so I’m just hoping that he will learn how to settle himself without me because he will have no choice. At this point I would even be happy if he starts sucking his thumb if it will help his settle.

@cashewchicken I think when it comes to CIO it’s what works for you and your family. If waking up every 3 hours is no big deal for you then you can give him time to sleep longer on his own. We tried CIO because others pressured us to and I really couldn’t listen to him scream for 15+ minutes and neither could DH. When he fusses I do give him time to see if he will stop but so far it just escalates.

So so I start work next week and I’m so anxious and stressed about it. It’s so hard picking a caregiver and I’m stressed about how he will cope without me and if I’ll be able to keep up pumping at work. Ugh if it was up to me I’d stay home with him for the first year but I can’t. I’m gonna miss him and worry so much I hope I can concentrate on work.
  • @safire3 - finding daycare was super stressful but I found that once I found someone I really felt good about my stress was really cut down! You’ll find someone - going back to work stinks for sure but I can tell you that now or in a year from now - it’s just hard but you adjust. I went back a month ago/Parker was a year and after a few weeks we have a new normal & I really look forward to weekends!

  • @safire3 our lil darlings certainly do sound similar for sure.  I feel bad ur having such a difficult time but it helps not feeling alone or like something is wrong! It’s great that ur finding things he likes and hopefully as time goes on he’ll give you a few extra minutes ;) I do hold her a lot and every time she’s sleeping and I go to put her down she wakes up and then I’m mad at myself for doing so as it takes me so much longer to get her back down.  I feel your pain with having to return to work but glad that I don’t.  I’m a freelancer and work project to project so it sux I don’t have a job but glad I’m home with her.  She still having gas issues And i just don’t feel comfortable leaving her.  Hoping in a few more months her tummy will be more settled.  As for CIO I still haven’t been told to do that as they say she’s still too young.  She does suck her fingers so I’m sure ozi will do that too!! Hoping u find someone u feel comfortable with soon!

  • @BusinessWife welcome & congrats on the arrival of baby girl!!

@2MomsHoping '...another amazon order'  :D what would we do without amazon??

I'm sorry you're having a hard time picking a caregiver @safire3.  Whoever/whatever you decide, you know you're doing what's best for your baby & for you.  I know that doesn't make it any easier, just be kind to yourself those first days/weeks back.
  • @safire3 I’m already dreading going back to work as well.  Go with your gut for the caregiver situation. We went round and round looking at daycares the one we picked wasn’t big and fancy but where for whatever reason I just trusted them.

@aera11 It’s pretty rare for me to get through the day without an amazon order. This morning I ordered some face mostuirizer for the baby and just now I finished my book so I just had to treat myself to a new one off my list. I don’t know how I ever lived without it.

  • @safire3 I go back to work this Thursday and am totally in denial and can’t  think about it without starting to cry. It doesn’t help that my office environment is crappy. The only reason I haven’t been job hunting is bc my office site thurs and fri is about 2 min from the daycare and I’ll be able to pop over on my lunch and hopefully breastfeed then too.

Sorry I’ve been mia!! Recovering from family in town the last two weeks, Abigail had her first cold, and really trying to soak up every single second with her before Thursday rolls around.
