Like @runrinserepeat I was pretty opposed to sleepers all the time with my first May baby. But at such a cold time of year, I may change my tune this time around.
I think layering is key regardless. And keep in mind that a long-sleeved onesie or shirt under a long sleeved sleeper or other layers is going to be a PITA. I definitely have a bunch of short-sleeved onesies for the under layer because I hate trying to pull long sleeves down under other long sleeves.
I’m getting flashbacks to all the finger strain I got from doing up all the stupid snap pajamas. Unfortunately you can’t really avoid snaps entirely. Ow.

I guess maybe this is a UO...but I like snap Jammie's for diaper changes! You only have to unsnap the bottom half, fold up under baby, change diaper, then pull back down and snap together. Yes zippers are quicker, but I don't mind snaps one bit.
@CecilB93 I didn't mind snaps initially, but once DD got to be like 5-6 months she was such a pain in the ass and I hated fighting her, so we go zippers all the way
I loved zippers vs snaps but my DD boycotted the zippers as soon as she could express her displeasure because she hated how close they were to her neck. Hoping this LO likes zippers because I have tons of adorable (and barely worn, for this reason!) hand me down jammies!
For me, I also liked not keeping the baby in jammies all day, simply because it helped me mentally on maternity leave to get us both dressed for the day and ready to go (I had PPA and then PPD so I struggled a bit, maternity leave happiness wise.) Getting us in a day outfit and going outside for some fresh air with a stroller walk was a big, important part of my routine, but everyone will find their own groove and what makes them/their LO happy, jammies or outfits, zippers or snaps, etc. It's so variable!
my husband refuses to do snaps but I agree with @CecilB93 undoing a few snaps was faster. When DD was about 6 months I found the reverse zipper jammies at target and they are the only ones we will buy now! Unzip the bottom half, baby stays warm so less fussing and no complaining from hubby!! Win-win!!
@mamajudec2018 happy to hear there is a plan now! Between the numbness, GD and now head aches, you deserve a break!! Hopefully from here on out is smoother and baby stays put till 39 weeks!!
@hannelorre I live in a pretty warm clime, but I’ve never experienced a winter here. Locals joke about it getting cooler in January - so we’re just playing it by ear. We have a handful of sleepers, long and short sleeve onesies, tiny sweatpants, and a few warm blankets. We’ll just get more of whatever works.

@echo-charlietango It definitely does get quite nippy, to the point where you'll at least want a hat and a blanket if you take the babe on a stroll. Plus there's the fact that it's a humid winter (versus dry), so it feels a lot colder than it would if you were living, say, in Indiana. In any case, I'd say your strategy is great -- you can always buy stuff as needed after the baby is here, and it's an excuse to get out!

@PensiveCrayon I'm just welcoming a winter more mild than last year's in Kansas! Multiple days of negative temps, ice storms freezing doors, general misery. AL can't possibly be that bad.

@echo-charlietango Oh yeah...definitely not. I guess I've forgotten what it's like to live in a place with real winter, after living in warm climes for the past 8 years!

@echo-charlietango@PensiveCrayon I'm jealous! We moved from Texas to Chicago so... i barely remember how to dress myself in layers, far less a newborn. I also miss brunching outside in February
Even better than snap or zip up jammies, I loved using the gowns. So easy to change diapers and they still stay warm. Also I loved pants with feet in them. I cannot stand socks on newborns, they never stay on.
I was just having a conversation with my H the other day debating which jammies we liked the best - the buttons or zippers and neither of us can remember. After reading through I definitely think it was zippers.
@hannelorre as far as clothes, I’m not really sure what we have currently, but I’m on the jammie train. I usually change them in the morning and if the outfit makes it all day then baby will get a new pair either after bath or in the morning. I do plan on getting some onesies and pants too for when we leave the house. I’m focusing mainly on 0-3 month clothes right now.
I'm no help on the long sleeve/short sleeve/climate question because the temp is pretty tame here in the winter. DS lived in onesies and sleepers for his first 9 months or so. I will say, we were expecting a big baby only bought a couple of NB onesies just in case, like maybe one set of 5, and we had to go out and buy some more. He wasn't in them long, but we definitely needed more.
I am pro pajamas for the first few weeks but hats off to anyone who has stamina for a real outfit in those days! Agree with everyone about the zippers v buttons but did any other STMs find that zipper pajamas are inevitably cut much wider than button ones?
I never figured out why but it happens across all brands so there must be a functional reason. But if you have a skinny long baby, get ready to be relegated to the button ones or be baggy in the zips.
I bought more newborn size clothing this time, especially since it will be winter and having things that fit snugly might matter more. Last time, I heeded all the advice not to buy much in NB and my totally average weight first baby (7lbs 3oz) didn’t fit into 0-3 for eight weeks!
@PensiveCrayon yes osh kosh socks! The only ones I ever bought him because they actually stayed on. I wasnt super happy about the price for little tiny socks but totally worth it to stay on.

Yes to all of this! We only had a few gowns with my DS, I want to get so many more this time for those first few months!!
My ds lived in sleepers for the first month. 1 because i had no energy to coordinate outfits, and they make some pretty cute sleepers. 2 because they were just easier then a several piece outfit layered because of winter. I didn't buy many nb outfits. I stuck mostly with 0-3 months, but ds was also 9lb 1oz and 23 1/4 in. soooo i have big babies. Im expecting this baby to be just as big or bigger so im planning on taking the same course of action.
@mamajudec2018 Glad you have a solid plan and hoping the pre-e does not progress! My SIL had the beginning stages of pre-e and was induced at 38 weeks as a precaution. Everything went fine.
re:vaccines Y'all are making me nervous about the flu now. I'm pretty sure everyone in my family has tdap and no one is an anti-vaxxer, but last year our soon-to-be 2 year old nephew got everyone horribly sick with what I think was a really bad flu at Christmas. My husband and I couldn't keep down water for an entire day. In fact, one of other SIL's boyfriend co-wrote this NYT op-ed piece after the experience. The intro was originally about my nephew, but it got cut. My nephew's parents are considerate enough to let us know if he's sick again this time, so I guess we'll just skip if he is. I am looking forward to introducing him to the baby though, especially since his mom is pregnant and due in a few months so it'll be cute to let him practice with a little cousin. Hopefully everyone stays healthy this year.

+1 to this. My kids were 7lb 2oz and 6lb 8oz, and didn't fit into 0-3 for about 2 months, either. This baby was measuring a little small at the a/s, so I'm expecting more of the same. I've heard some mommas say they just kept the tags on the nb stuff, just in case, and then exchanged for larger sizes after the fact if baby was bigger.
Question about diaper sizes: how many should i have of each size before lo is born? Are size 0 and 1 the same (if they both say newborn)? Should I register for a variety of sizes? My lo has been measuring big, but I don't know if that means they may skip nb diapers like some kiddos skip nb clothes?
@morgantu The big thing about diaper size for me, is that The smaller the size you buy, the more diapers you get. So, That being said, I stuck with the smaller sizes for as long as I could. What is nice, is that most places will allow you to go back and exchange for size, if needed. My son was measuring bag, so we did not buy any newborn diapers. He came out 8 lbs 2 oz and we ended up buying 2-3 large boxes of newborn diapers. I would recommend registering for at least five of each size. As for what you actually want at home when you get there, I would have at least one box of newborn and one box of size 1. Also, take all you can from the hospital!
@morgantu they can be really off with measuring size in the womb. Buy at least one box of the smallest size, because my daughter was on track to be larger and was only 7 lb 4 oz and we were in newborn diapers for a while. Just don’t open the box before you use it. Target was really great about returning easily
As a STM I should know this...but I can't remember. So I'm sick, thanks toddler. Congestion (but not an actual sinus infection, yet at least) and lots of coughing that feels like it's moving into my chest a little...anyone know what's safe to take? I know to avoid anything with PM/DM on the label, but beyond that I can't remember.
ETA nevermind, I've got an appointment with Urgent Care in about an hour. I think it'll be too tricky with pregnancy and GD restrictions to figure out something OTC
My LO was 8.5 lbs and wore newborns diapers for a few weeks. He wore size 1 diapers for a while. I just bought a few small packages of newborn sizes and a giant costco box of size 1. I try to be frugal about a lot of baby stuff but diapers is not one of them. I couldn't stand the smell of luvs diapers. Also keep in mind that brands still have different kinds. Huggies little snugglers/movers not the same as huggies snug and dry. After having blowouts and peeing through cheap diapers it's not worth it. The best deal is buying huggies diapers on sale at costco.
@CecilB93 guaifenesin (brands like Robitussin or Mucinex) is safe in pregnancy (even first trimester) as per my OB’s “always safe in pregnancy” OTC med list. I just sent MH to the store to get me some because this cough is brutal.
Other stuff can also be reasonable options at our stage of pregnancy, but best to discuss with your doctor. Hope you feel better soon!
@Katzalia thanks! I thought I took Mucinex last time but couldn't remember. Urgent Care didn't do anything but waste my time and money, she told me they couldn't do anything for me and to call my OBs office so looks like I'll be calling them in the morning anyways
