@mamajudec2018 a big change in swelling is something I would definitely encourage you to call about. I can’t really speak to the constellation of symptoms, but definitely call. Better for them to say it’s fine and reassure you than not follow up about an actual problem.
@mamajudec2018 I would definitely call. Have you weighed yourself recently, or taken your BP like in a drugstore machine? I know they ruled out pre-e before but I’m concerned for you and baby!

@Katzalia@PensiveCrayon Ok, thank you ladies! I never want to be like too annoying or whatever because I worry so much about everything but I also don't want to not say something when I should! I will definitely contact them tomorrow! I haven't weighed myself or taken my blood pressure but pre-e was definitely the first thing I thought of.
@mamajudec2018 def call doc to rule out pre-e to be on the safe side. Not something to mess with since it goes bad fast

@katy0990@mcgeeva Ok, thank you!! I sent a message to my doc so that she gets it right in the morning. Her and the nurses are great about answering. I'll keep you all posted!
@mamajudec2018 glad you sent them a message!! Sudden swelling is definitely a reason to contact them. And while it could be nothing, it could also be something, so it's better to know for sure. Keep us updated on what they say! FX for you that it's nothing!
@mamajudec2018 I'm glad you sent a message too. Questions are exactly what your medical team is there for. I know you don't want to be a "pest", but don't feel bad about asking any question...in today's world, you really have to be an advocate for your own health care.
Yes @mamajudec2008 def update us! I'm always curious but only have my previous experiences to go on with Pre-e. But clearly it's always good to update others if the symptoms were from a specific cause as a warning

@mamajudec2018 Have you heard from your doctor this morning? Let us know how you’re doing when you can! Swelling like that is nothing to mess around with. Hope everything is good!
@mamajudec2018 wondering if you’ve heard anything back yet? This is the kind of thing I wouldn’t hesitate to call about once the office is open, vs waiting for when they get around to responding to messages.
Thank you all for being so supportive and caring about me and baby! They brought be in today for a blood pressure check. It was normal. They also took some blood so will hear next week on that. They also are having me do the 24 hour urine test. They said the symptoms seems like pre-eclampsia but that it would be pretty early to show that but they'd like to check just in case. I should get results from the urine test like the end of next week since I won't be able to turn it in until the beginning of next week.
@mamajudec2018 I’m glad your BP was okay. I hope the urine results come back okay and that the swelling goes down! FWIW I had carpel tunnel during my last pregnancy and I started wearing writs guards at night and that helped a bit.
@katy0990 How have your hands and wrists been so far? When did your carpal tunnel kick in last time? Mine started at 32 weeks and by the end I was incapacitated pretty much. I'm 29 weeks on Sunday and so far no sign of it, thank goodness.
@texas_t It was on and off from 20ish weeks, but it was constant from around 28 weeks, I think. This time, I’m 24+4 and I’m afraid to jinx it, but so far so good, as long as I don’t lay on my hands or wrists.
@mamajudec2018 so glad to hear this update! I’ve been looking all day. Glad your BP seemed alright and that they are being cautious and keeping and eye. In the meantime If it gets worse over the weekend be sure to call again.
@mamajudec2018 Glad your blood pressure was normal and they are keeping a close eye on you! And for what it's worth, never feel like you're being annoying by contacting your doctor to make sure a symptom you're experiencing is normal - that is what they are there for, and you and your baby's safety/health are the most important thing! Hope the swelling goes down and/or they're able to figure out what's causing it!
@mamajudec2018 glad you got some thorough follow up from your doctor, and that your BP was normal. Good luck with the 24 hr urine, and I hope your swelling goes down.

Yes 100% about pregnancy and when the babies come. It is their job to field our calls and tell us when to come or if something can wait to be seen. If something sounds like nothing they definitely won’t hesitate to tell you that
@katy0990@texas_t Thank you! I'm wondering if I should start wearing wristguards. It is so painful and also just frustrating that I am not able to do some fine motor skills.
@kristah2 Thank you! I definitely will. My swelling seems really intense today but I wouldn't say it's any worse but I am getting a headache so I'll make sure I take note if that becomes a pattern.
@maureenmce Thank you! You are right. I need to just not worry about how they'll react and contact them when I feel like something is concerning me.
@Jens_Hoes You're right! I will really try not to hesitate in the future if something is concerning me.
@mamajudec2018 just catching up on this now, but so glad you asked the doctor about it and they saw you quickly. Great news that your BP was normal, and the fact they are doing additional testing is excellent. You deserve answers. By chance, is your BP usually quite low? Mine runs low (90-100/50-60) usually, and today it was 130/80. Doc said it seems like it's creeping up, and they will keep a close eye on it, and told me to watch for early signs of pre-e, but said my numbers weren't worrisome yet. I wonder if maybe your "normal" is much lower than the standard, so they aren't watching the numbers close enough? Sorry if you've answered this a million times already somewhere!
@mamajudec2018 I had some similar warning signs early on in my last pregnancy and one thing that was reassuring was to buy a home blood pressure monitor. They’re easy to get at any drug store (sometimes you have to ask behind the pharmacy counter but it’s not a prescription.)
By a certain point in my pregnancy, my doctor had me periodically check and contact him if I was over a certain threshold on either number. For weeks my pressure was totally fine and then it did spike to 160/120ish suddenly at 38.5 weeks and without me realizing it except for the monitor (I didn’t feel any different.) I now think it’s a good thing to have in the house just in general and they’re quite small to store. Maybe something to consider for reassurance if nothing else.
Btw make sure you get the arm cuff not the wrist cuff. The wrist ones are less accurate.
@mamajudec2018 just seeing your update. So glad your BP was normal and that they're doing extra tests!! Hopefully it's not pre-e, but like maureenmce said, definitely don't hesitate to call this weekend if you have any other symptoms or get worse.
@scaredunprepared I honestly don't know what my normal blood pressure is. I wish so bad I did because that makes total sense that it could just be a change even if it's not their specific standards of pre-eclampsia. If my blood work and urine test come back worrisome then I will for sure mention that to my doctor.
@maebyemby That's a good idea! I will look into that for sure. I'm 27 1/2 weeks and start twice weekly fetal monitoring at 32 weeks so at least at that point they'll start checking my blood pressure twice a week rather than just once a month or once every two weeks.
@mamajudec2018 re: your usual BP, usually every visit your doctor’s office will take vitals including your BP. If you have access to online messaging with your doctor, you likely also have access to your vitals in the after visit summaries.
@katy0990@texas_t My hubby is on my way to Walgreens right now to get me a wristguard. Hoping that helps because I am unable to do the most simple tasks without pain! Thank you for the advice!
Hi all! I wanted to ask about vaccines... are you guys requiring anyone to who is going to be around your baby to get the flu shot? We are adamant about this and got a strong response from my MIL about it. How about the TDAP? I know my husband and I will have gotten it, but are you requiring it from anyone else?
@lexidawg My mom and I had a conversation about TDAP last week. Her PCP told her that he feels TDAP isn't really necessary for people who will be around a baby if they aren't the day-to-day caregivers. I plan to ask my OB her opinion and my parents at least have decided to get the vaccine anyways.
@lexidawg DH and I will definitely get both vaccines and while I've mentioned that it would be nice for the grandparents to get them as well, I am not going to press on it. For the flu vaccine, sometimes it's only 30% effective against the current season's outbreak, so you never know if it will do anything. Asking people to wash their hands before handling baby or baby's things is probably as safe as you can get it. TDAP is a tricky one - I think it's a "live" vaccine, so I don't think everyone can have it. For example, my FIL won't be able to take it, and probably won't be able to be around anyone who takes it, so my MIL won't be able to get it. Again, hoping that hand washing is going to be enough..
Aaaaaand I just realized that I'm supposed to get the vaccine only days before Thanksgiving, so I might expose my FIL to it Why didn't I think of this before?
@lexidawg my mother (our daycare provider), myself and DH all will have/have current TDAP vaccines. I don't have to hound DH to get it, because he inevitably sticks himself with something rusty every 10 years or so My mother will get flu, and DH has agreed to get it because the baby cannot get it this year. Other than that, we don't really push. If someone is sick we stay away or vice versa. It is hard on my in laws side because we are 1 of soon to be six grandchildren, and I don't really want to be the crazy lady who pushes it for people who aren't around the baby as much. I echo what ab_canada said in that handwashing is paramount, and not kissing baby on the mouth or head.
@lexidawg I did not insist on it last time and I don’t think I will this time either. I did mention it to my mom and MIL. I’m pretty sure my MIL got both. Not sure what my mom did. Obviously DH and I got both. I do feel totally confident in everyone who will be around my baby that they are responsible enough to stay away if they even feel a tiny bit sick or if they have been around a sick person. That being said, I think it’s 100% parents’ right to insist on it if they think that’s whats best.
And now I've spent a half hour googling whether the pertussis vaccine is safe for cancer patients.. It looks like they can even be given it, so I am assuming I can't pass it on to my FIL.. But we will check with his doctors and I will ask mine, just to be sure.
@lexidawg we are pressing flu for grandparents and really, anyone who wants to see baby in the first few weeks. TDAP for me, H, and will mention it to others, but probably not press the issue. H is a virologist, and VERY adamant about vaccines. Both my mom and MIL are retired teachers and are very happy to be vaccinated, and force my dad and FIL to get theirs. I don't think it will be a big issue, but it's definitely a fight that H will be happy to fight.
@lippy625 I am also going to ask my OB about her thoughts on the TDAP and go from there.
@ab_canada and Jens_Hoes I will DEFINITELY be insistent on hand washing and the kissing for sure. I am just so nervous about how bad the flu was and how it is expected to be worse this year!
@rosebud332 Thank you for saying that as parents we have a right to insist on it. For some reason, the flu shot is something we are feeling SUPER strongly about.
@morgantu Sounds like we are in the same boat! We aren't pressing the TDAP issue but definitely the flu shot.
