Pregnancy in the workplace

Re: Pregnancy in the workplace

  • I have not yet, but know I will have to soon. I am scared. I don't know if they'll be supportive.

I actually started the job while pregnant, which makes it scarier.

  • I finally told my boss and one supervisor last week (at 16 weeks, basically because I was afraid I would start showing before I told!), but otherwise I think this is going to be the week when people more generally find out in my division (which has maybe 50-60 people). I am dreading my body and pregnancy being a focus and topic of discussion. There's one admin person who, my last pregnancy, constantly made super inappropriate comments on my body all the time, gave me a long lecture on how I need to breastfeed (not that I wasn't planning on it but she apparently thought she was someone I would want allll the thoughts from on this ?!), and so much more. I might need to hide from her until February.
  • I have only told my boss, and my career manager because my assignments are dictated based on my physical aptitude and performance. My co-workers will inevitably find out when I switch from a regular uniform to a maternity uniform/larger uniform.
  • Yes @sjnsjnsjn I am dreading my 70 person staff finding out about it. My team knows, but the rest of the staff doesn't... it's solely for the reason that I don't want it to be the only thing people talk to me about. IDK if that makes sense?? I think I am not able to hide it too much longer, I've really grown over the last few days... lol.
  • @ohsunnydays- makes sense to me because that's exactly how I feel!  There will be all the same body talk (ugh), and then all the obligatory talk re having another boy and transition for my son and blah, and I just really want to bang out my job which I currently hate and go home.  Grouch grouch grouch
  • I’ve told my immediate boss, but not her bosses (tradition is to inform your studio VPs). I just got re-hired in March (I left last year to work for a client) so I feel bad telling them I’m KO. I’m dreading it actually.
  • @conchispita- So sorry! I did just see your HDBD post and caption... I think I agree that they might be able to tell without being told!
  • @sjnsjnsjn I actually ended up announcing at work yesterday. It wasn't as bad as I thought.. but dreading the part where the pregnancy questions keep comin until Feb. The one annoying thing "do you know what you're having?" EVERY.SINGLE.PERSON. asked me. We are in the world of instant gratification, I get it. My husband, immediate family, and 2 close friends know, (well and this board knows it) but that's it- I am faking team green for everyone else. So it's been hard to say "ohh we don't know just yet, maybe at the anatomy scan" lol.
  • Omg @ohsunnydays. If I get asked one more time by someone at work if I know the sex yet I’ll stab a bitch.

  • @grebretso  I keep forgetting to snort back "A BABY. I'M HAVING A BABY." What do you want it to be? "A HEALTHY ONE!" Who doesn't want to find out, you or DH? ;laksjdfalskjdf lol
  • @ohsunnydays and when I tell them I don’t know, they ask what I prefer! I don’t care, as long as it’s human! Someone today even suggested a betting pool. FFS, I’m not having a goddamn HORSE!

  • @grebretso we can only hope this annoying questioning will die down over the next month! Then, I'm sure we'll have to deal with the terrifying birth stories. Yikes

@ohsunnydays Thankfully none of the women I work with have kids, so I’ll dodge that one. A few of the guys do, but I’m sure they’d rather not talk about their wives’ exploding vaginas. At least I hope so.

  • @grebretso- BAHAHAHA jaysus I sure hope so!
  • @grebretso HAH!!! Can we trade places? I work at an elementary school with only 4 men on staff ... and almost a grand total of 70 women!
  • @ohsunnydays Yiiiikes! Nope, I'll stay where I am, thank you very much. This is one of the few times I'm happy about working in a male dominated space!

PREACH! I also work at a school. Another girl in my division is pregnant, so we’ve both been grateful to split the “attention” (read: inquisition)
  • @BourbonBiscuits that is nice! When I announced I had someone run up to me and say “OMG I’m so glad I’m not the only one having babies around here!” Lol now I get why .
  • @hannahbananas11- Insomnia makes me psychic apparently!!

I work part-time private tutoring (music) 2 days a week in addition to my full time job. So, today, another teacher called me fatty. It shouldn’t bother me, but I’m still kinda upset by it. I’m not huge yet. :'(  I’ve known her since i was a kid b/c I took lessons  as a kid there. I know how she *jokes* but I really didn’t like that.  :(
  • @ohsunnydays- it has to be funny to be a joke, and that's not. I would be pretty mad.
  • How is that a joke, @ohsunnydays?! You have every right to be upset.
  • Thanks you guys. It’s just so rude.
  • @grebretso exaxtly. And then later she starts talking about how her daughter has gained weight and gotten so “fat.”
  • @ohsunnydays- ah so she's just a classless jerk in general. Ugh
  • Ahh good ol' fat shaming. I'm sure her daughter won't have any body image issues when she's older!

  • Yup! And I don’t like talking about what other people look like, but she’s not exactly a perfect picture of fitness and health herself...
(And her daughter is only 4 years younger than me  :'(  I’d be mortified if my mom talked about me like that to others!)

Oh, her daughter is an adult? I guess I'm relieved she wasn't fat shaming a child, but that's still not OK at all. What the hell, lady.

  • My colleague (the one who always says ridiculous things), just said this gem: "Are you sure you're not having twins? Because you've got some girth going on." GIRTH?!?! Who says that?? LOLOL
Someone at church asked me the same thing. I've since had a nightmare that I go in for an ultrasound and there are suddenly twins.
  • Wth @hannahbananas11! Who says that? How do people even know how big someone's bump for how far along they are?
  • Got my first work belly rub today.. actually 2 by the same person in the same convo.

Fortunately i didnt find it weird but thats because of who it was.  Lol i only started telling people at large yesterday  :|
  • A coworker today came up to me and said "omg I want to touch your bump so badly but I'm not going to because that'd be weird, right?" I thanked her, because it would be weird. Lol we both laughed about it for a while but now I'm wondering how many people are staring at me wanting to touch my belly but knowing they shouldn't
  • I had to send an email to the teachers/staff in my building to NOT tell students I was expecting. Didn't even know I would need to do that... schools are the most gossipy place ever! Students already know! I teach K-5 and don't want my students to know too soon. With 470 students I see weekly, I would get so overwhelmed with answering their questions of when the baby would arrive. PLUS, umm... isn't it MY body... shouldn't I be the one to share the news?! My students are sweet and I want to tell them myself!
NO wonder I waited until 18 weeks to announce!
  • @hannahbananas11- GIRTH?!?! That's something someone says re a truck. Wtf. I would gone homicidal.
  • Totally calling my due date “the blessed event” from now on.
