  • @echo-charlietango OMG something similar happened to me yesterday! H (AKA Crabby McRestrictions) was working late so I was going to be all sneaky and grab a pack of sushi while I was out at the commissary. I got something that looked tasty but couldn't fully tell what was in it because half of it was smeared with spicy sauce and the other half was arranged on its side. But a few of the pieces I saw had cream cheese, so I was satisfied.

Turns out it was 100% fake crab, only a few of the pieces had cream cheese for whatever reason, and the only other filler was cucumber. What a stinking letdown.

Would anyone be interested in a budgeting for baby thread?  I've been keeping track of our purchases and am trying to project our costs for the first year.  It'd be nice to hear from STM about where they splurged and saved, if they have regrets, etc.  I'm also worried I'm missing major expenses that just aren't on my radar.

@kadeephd In my experience, the big expenses occurred before DS was born on all of the gear.
The biggest expense after birth was all of the medical (our OOP max was $3500 and we met that plus $400 for his circumcision). All of the well checks and lactation appointments were covered 100% by insurance, but we probably had 4-5 appointments for random things that required copays.
The next largest expense could be childcare depending on your situation and area.
Photos were a pretty large expense for us. We bought the newborn photos from the hospital for $150. I found a photographer on Facebook and I paid her $80 per session to take his photos at three months, six months, nine months, and twelve months.
Thankfuly, I was able to breastfeed, so we saved a lot of money there. I think I bought maybe 5-6 packs of breastmilk storage bags (Target brand by far was the most economical and reliable). I also bought a hands free pumping bra. I made his purees once he started on those just using my blender, a regular pot, and some $2 ice cube trays, so that probably cost us about $10-$20/month from 4 months until 10 months. After that, he basically ate what we ate, so the expense was minimal.
If you are open to shopping Mom consignment sales, you can save a ton also. I go to one in the spring and one in the fall and spend about $100 at each one.(Obviously, photos are more important to me than clothes  :D)
Other than that, we spent $20-$30/month on diapers and $10 every 2-3 months on wipes.
Obviously, there were times that we had to pick up infant Tylenol, teething rings, and other random items, but for the most part other than those expenses I listed, we really did not spend that much during the first year. It could be different in different areas, but for me it was significantly cheaper to buy diapers, wipes, and many other random items on Amazon as part of their subscribe and save program. I would also recommend saving up any gift cards you get it as gifts to use for random purchases that have been at the last minute, like when all of the pacifiers disappear  ;)
  • @katy0990 That's good to know.  I have a budgeted amount for random little stuff that will come up, I just want to avoid missing big expenses.  For us, it seems like the biggest expense by far will be adding the baby to my husband's health insurance.   That will cost more for one year than we'll spend on the birth and all the medical care leading up to it (assuming nothing goes terribly wrong).

I'm going to start the thread in case others want to comment so this doesn't take over the randoms thread!

  • @kadeephd I can move my response to that thread. Sorry. I didn’t see it when I posted.
  • @katy0990 No worries --  I didn't post it until after you had responded.

  • @kristah2 Thanks for the recommendation!
@PensiveCrayon That's awesome to know...I'll see if that one is covered by my insurance!  I wouldn't have even thought this type of item would be covered.
@tunnel I too giggled at blue balls...I have the mind of a 12 year old boy.  :p

  • @texas_t @hkom I definitely don't look like that either haha!

@echo-charlietango @PensiveCrayon I was at a work dinner the other night (aka fancy lol) and we had the seafood sampler as an appetizer. In addition to all the yummy crab and lobster, there was fresh poke. I was SO excited to have just a few bites. It was amazing.  :p

I was super productive this morning, but I'm leaving for a weekend with my college roomie tomorrow early morning... so I've lost all productivity at work as of now.

  • OMG I am the month 7 photo with belly size. I feel like month 7 with lung capacity.. how am I going to survive another 13-15 weeks?!
  • In two weeks they are celebrating grandparents day at ds’s school. So on a Friday grandparents or a special person can come in and do lunch with the kids. My parents can’t come and my kid is devastated. He had started to cry about it a few times. I understand they are teaching but I hate to see my kid sad and the day isn’t even here where he has to see other grandparents come in. I talked to ds’s teacher about it and she was very kind in talking to him. She said he could invite another teacher to eat with him, but he said no. She told him that he could make his present for his grandparents and do a special wrapping decoration to mail to them- that made him a little happy. I know disappointments are part of life- I just hate to see him sad.

I have a conference. I’m going to check with h, but his work is usually not so flexible and I do most of the kids stuff. Good suggestion though, it’s worth asking :)
  • @Activebaby I'm sorry - I am sad for your son too. We are lucky that my kids have so far had someone to come, but I know my mom has said before that she has invited other kids to eat breakfast with them because you could tell they had no one there and seemed lost. Like you said disappointments are a part of life - but it's not easy watching your kids have them. I know I tend to want to make everything okay for them (as much as you know you can't control the world). Hopefully once it's over he will forget all about it.
  • @activebaby I didn't have local grandparents growing up and so I was never able to actively participate in Grandparents day either.  But my school teamed the grandparent-less with 8th graders, so I felt so cool being with a big popular kid
