@kimbaby2due I’ve actually been looking into teaching Chinese students online as an option for when baby #2 is due. I’m an EL teacher so i feel like it would be very similar, just a different platform. If you don’t mind me asking, do you like the company you work for and are it able to determine the number of hours you work?
@chocolatelemons I love it! I’m almost to two years now. You have complete control over your hours. There’s no minimum amount you have to work. But once a class is booked, the cancellation policy is very strict. I work for VIPKID, but there are several more companies popping up now. VIPKID is the OG and will be around for awhile. On the downside, there have been some teachers complaining that their classes aren’t booking well. I haven’t had that problem, but it would be nerve wrecking if you’re relying on the income and can’t book classes.
What is your career/job?I am a freelance graphic designer and photographer.
Is this what you wanted to do growing up or a complete change from what you thought you would be doing? No, it’s a venture I just started about a year ago. Before that I was a doula.
What is your favorite thing about your career? I love that I can work from so we can continue homeschooling and I love that I get to do art everyday.
What is your biggest complaint about your job?it’s tough as a startup freelancer. I’m still trying to get clients and put my name out there.
What is your career/job?I am a quality control technician for a water manufacturing plant.
Is this what you wanted to do growing up or a complete change from what you thought you would be doing? No, I wanted to research cancer. I got sick in uni and couldn't do my PhD, so unless I do that, I can't get a job.
What is your favorite thing about your career? I like the idea of it. That I might be helping people, by stopping them drinking contaminated water. The reality is my word doesn't count for much. As in I can recommend something happen, but ultimately whether they follow it is up to them.
What is your biggest complaint about your job? my opinion isn't considered as much as I think it should be. The company thinks in terms of money (holding those bottles will cost X amount of money) where I think of risk. I also have pretty shit hours, and I'm having issues with one of my bosses ATM. I'm just trying to get to the end of this pregnancy and then I'm quitting.
What is your career/job? Director of Infant & Toddler Programs at the Smithsonian Early Enrichment Center in DC.
Is this what you wanted to do growing up or a complete change from what you thought you would be doing? Kinda...I didn’t really have a plan growing up!
What is your favorite thing about your career? Working with amazing educators and families and kids! Plus my kids get to go to an amazing school inside a Smithsonian museum and explore the city and museums everyday...pretty lucky!!
What is your biggest complaint about your job? We are in the Smithsonian but not part of it, so we get no funding so it can be tricky to get donors since folks asssume we have money...but we are a non-profit!
@kimbaby2due That's the company I've definitely heard of the most. I have a few interviews lined up. It's so strange to be interviewing at 9 pm. Some of the other options were 2-4 am. No thanks!
1.) What is your career/job? I am an engineer. Previously I worked in the mining industry (yes, I went underground haha), but now I work in distribution doing process analysis and improvement.
2.) Is this what you wanted to do growing up or a complete change? I changed my mind so much growing up. I was already really good at math and problem solving, so engineering felt natural. I didn't make the decision until I graduated high school.
3.) What is your favorite thing about your caeer? Making things better and helping others achieve their potential. I do some training on continuous improvement concepts and work on a lot of projects, so I get to see people really come out of their shells. It's exciting.
4.) What is your biggest complaint about your job? Lack of authority. In my position, I do a lot of analysis and recommendation, but don't have control over when or if a process improvement gets implemented.
1.) What is your career/job? I am a project director working in international development. I currently manage two projects - one in Liberia and one in Haiti.
2.) Is this what you wanted to do growing up or a complete change? I wanted to be either an artist or a detective growing up, so...yeah it's pretty different.
3.) What is your favorite thing about your career? The travel can be pretty great, especially when you can spend enough time with staff in different countries, and really get to know them and form relationships. Back before I was married with a toddler I managed a project in Uganda and I was there for about 2 months out of the year. I really miss my staff there.
4.) What is your biggest complaint about your job? It's really hard to balance it with having kids. Travel is so much harder when you have to think about childcare, but it's really difficult to be a good project manager when you sit in an office in DC full time. I'm actually really bummed because I might have to cancel two trips that I have coming up - I need to talk to my OB about malaria meds and if they're safe to take. I was just getting back being able to travel regularly since it's a lot easier for DH to take care of DS now. Once I have two under the age of three I have a feeling it's going to be a lot harder to travel. I'm actually pretty anxious about going back to work after #2 and how that will go.
What is your career/job? I am a speech/language pathologist. I work at a pediatric outpatient clinic plus on-call at the hospital, weekends/holidays every 6 weeks or so.
Is this what you wanted to do growing up or a complete change from what you thought you would be doing? When I was a kid, I wanted to be an architect, but once I started college I decided to study elementary education. I worked at a teacher for a few years before going back to school to become a SLP.
What is your favorite thing about your career? I love seeing my kiddos make progress. It's a very rewarding job.
What is your biggest complaint about your job? At my current job, it is the lack of supervision for certified staff and the fact that some therapists can do a poor job and no one seems to pay attention or care. Many of my coworkers are nearing retirement age and their therapeutic techniques are often old school and they don't use evidence- based practice which is very frustrating!
