Re: GTKY - Careers
I'm an engineer, I work for the Navy helping the sailors fix their equipment.
Is this what you wanted to do growing up or a complete change from what you thought you would be doing?
Not necessarily since I was a kid. When I found out most marine biologists study microorganisms and not dolphins that lost its appeal.
What is your favorite thing about your career?
I love figuring out how things work.
What is your biggest complaint about your job?
There's not enough work to keep everyone in my office busy, and since I'm the least experienced I am usually the one stuck in the office twiddling my thumbs. I'm hoping that once I come out with my pregnancy that my contracting company will find something more interesting for me to do that will actually keep me busy.
Is this what you wanted to do growing up or a complete change from what you thought you would be doing?
I actually went to school for music but missed math and science work so switched to medicine.
What is your favorite thing about your career?
I don’t actually work a lot anymore. I’ve cut my hours way back so I can focus on other things and it’s nice that I can pretty easily do that. I volunteer a lot and work from home as a consultant and usually have plenty of time left over to operate our small farm.
What is your biggest complaint about your job?
It’s not a complaint really but a reality that it can be really intense. It sort of takes over everything else if I let it.

2. Is this what you wanted to do growing up or a complete change from what you thought you would be doing? I wanted to do marine biology but wasn’t a fan of college so that was too much lol.

I'm a SAHM/WAHM. I used to work in news media doing a lot of different things, and I quit when I had my daughter. Currently, I do part time writing/editing work outside the news industry for a small company. I also do some of the paperwork and whatever my H needs for the small business he/we operate in the summer.
2. Is this what you wanted to do growing up?
Yes and no. I never knew what I wanted to be growing up. I did know that I wanted to stay home with my children once I had them. Beyond that, I changed a lot. I wanted to be a scientist for awhile, I wanted to be a novelist, I wanted to be an archaeologist, etc. I did write a tiny family newspaper as a kid, so maybe I knew where I'd end up. I've also always said I'm not cut out to be an accountant and run my H's business and I would not do that. Which I'm not doing, exactly, but I do help with taxes and I am kind of, and I'm coming around to it.
3. Favorite thing?
Currently, I do like being able to be home with my children, and it's so nice to only juggle one work schedule when planning vacations and things we want to do. I also love that I can do some work from home, and I don't have to put my children in daycare. The work for our business, I can do whenever, and the nature of the work for the outside company is such I can do it whenever and however as long as it gets done within 24-48 hours of getting the work. Pick it up while my daughter's happy and playing independently, pause to play with her, pick it up during naps, or just wait and do it all at 8:30 pm after she's in bed.
My prior career in news, I LOVED talking to people and not being at a desk all day. I loved hearing people's stories.
4. Complaint?
Currently, I don't get enough work from the company I work for. I can go months with nothing. I do wish they had more hours for me, but oh well. Also, of course, with me not working full time, we have less money, but if our child/children were in daycare, we'd have a lot less than pre-kids anyway. And also, I do get stressed and annoyed with my daughter and wish I had help during the day.
Previously, it was SO STRESSFUL! It was so high-stress and I was looking (unsuccessfully) after one year for another job. I was so burned out. I was so happy to quit. Coworkers were good and I liked it fine, but it was just too stressful and too much work. I'm not cut out for the constant daily deadlines we had. People have encouraged me to do freelance reporter work, but that prior experience was so crazy, that I've more or less decided I am never doing anything like that again!
2. Is this what you wanted to do growing up or a complete change from what you thought you would be doing?
100% no! When I was younger I wanted to be a vet or a teacher. When I got older I was adamant I wouldn’t work for the government because “bumps on a log” and all that. I got a minor in Industrial/Organizational psychology and started pursuing a masters degree with the intent of becoming a consultant or possibly personnel lawyer, in the mean time I got a government gig and was really enjoying that quasi consultant work. Re-evaluated my strengths and knew anything that would require a lot of public speaking or selling myself wasn’t right for me. Here I am 8 years later
3. What is your favorite thing about your career?
I have learned a lot about government finance and contracting which potentially could make me a bunch of money as a contractor if I pursued it. The group I work with now is very family oriented and flexible with me. Pay is very competitive. I like being among the best at what I do.
4. What is your biggest complaint about your job?
There are a LOT of those bumps on a log I was worried about and they are making me jaded and hate my job. Since the pay is so competitive I feel trapped. I’m about to get a promotion where I have to supervise some low caliber folks and I have many mixed feeling about that.

- What is your career/job?
I am an acupuncturist /Chinese medicine provider!2. Is this what you wanted to do growing up or a complete change from what you thought you would be doing?
No, I wanted to run a doggie day care until I realized that means glorified pooper scooper. Then I wanted to be an artist, but didn't want to get trapped in a certain style because of what would sell vs wouldn't sell.
3. What is your favorite thing about your career?
I get to help people feel better and can usually see results in the first visit! And I get to provide self care tools for use at home It is basically facilitating adult nap time! Sometimes there are kids too, but less often.
4. What is your biggest complaint about your job?
Toss up between billing medical insurance, which can be a pain in the butt, and the fact that it can be very isolating. I work for myself so even though I see people, it is very much listening to a lot of complaints, some of which I can help but some of which are just venting. It can also be frustrating when people don't follow self care directions and then keep complaining/don't make better when really they could make some changes and choose not to!
@bluebell08 my last company I was a PM for industrial and mechanical power tools and was also like 1 of 2 females and I was amazed at the stuff that those guys said.
To all the SAHM, I salute you! That is seriously the hardest job IMHO.
Yaaaayyy!!! I love it when people have tried it / had good experiences / are curious about it!!!
There is a specific feeling in the pulse that can signify pregnancy - but it can also be a sign of a couple other things so I tend to not try to predict it for patients. We feel pulses because they actually check into different organ systems rather than just for the rate. A pregnancy pulse is called slippery, when typically a pms pulse is more wiry. But it is hard to describe, it took me like a year to learn to feel the differences (there are actually 27 pulse types). Some practitioners say that you can predict gender based on which side is stronger, but again, that can mean other things too and I have seen it be inaccurate. Also, I never remember which is which!
I get acupuncture 2x/month myself just for wellness and it is soooo wonderful and relaxing. I don't know how people live without it regularly!
I know it is early but I make a postpartum care box with tons of Chinese medicine tools to nourish/heal new moms (who often get lost in all the resources for babies!!) in case anyone is interested

- What is your career/job?
I have been in banking in some form or fashion for the last 17 years. First at the federal reserve and then retail banking.- Is this what you wanted to do growing up or a complete change from what you thought you would be doing?
Absolutely not!! I, like a lot of us apparently, I wanted to be a vet. But then I figured out that I can't handle the sight of blood or seeing an innocent animal in pain. I just kind of stumbled in to banking.- What is your favorite thing about your career?
Being able to help people get a handle on their finances.- What is your biggest complaint about your job?
Those people that complain all the time but won't do what needs to be done to fix their issues. For example, someone complains that they always get overdraft fees.... I explain to them why it keeps happening and how to avoid it, and the next month they come in with the exact same freaking complaint!Married: 2016
