@maureenmce &@lexidawg I am SO jealous of your post delivery meals & drinks! I live in such a rural area that the cafeteria has very limited hours and nothing in town was open so I had to go with vending machine shit after delivering DS. BOOO. Maybe next time I'll have DH go get pizza and champagne after the fact.
@Jens_Hoes I had nearly an identical experience to you in that the nipple shield saved my BF experience. DS was born on a Tuesday right before midnight and I didn't try a nipple shield until Friday when an LC was like.. HERE, use this. Those days between were so difficult I'd try to nurse, it would always be unsuccessful due to flat nipples so then I'd pump and feed him with a little dropper like a bird. I was trying to hard to listen to everything SIL (who is also an LC) was advising and she said she wouldn't personally use the shield. You gotta do you, I learned that big time.
thanks for the good vibes everyone- apparently there are multiple offers on the house (after 24 hours on the market, ugh) and they are deciding at 1 today. I need something to distract me for the next 2 hours!!! AHHHHHHHH this is so nerve wracking.
I went on my hospital tour Tuesday night. When I asked about them supplementing with formula, she was very adamant that they only give baby formula if absolutely medically necessary. That worries me a little, but I figure if I feel worried, DH will throw a fit and make sure it happens. He's good that way
@morgantu Sending good vibes on the house...I'm so hoping they accept your offer!
@binxybaby I don't know why, but that surprises me a hospital is so "last resort only" on formula. Maybe I assume that all hospitals would be in the mindset of "as long as baby is fed," but I guess not! Weird (and stupid). I received a lot of formula in the mail (large sample sizes) before I had DD. Maybe you'll get some and can just pack it in your hospital bag in case they're assholes about it.
@temmetime I was just thinking the other day that DH should go get us some champagne this go around...I'm thinking that's going to have to be a definite!
@binxybaby Just a thought — you may find yourself receiving free newborn formula samples (I know I got a lot, not sure about others) so you could take that along with you in your hospital bag.

I had a dream last night I was dating Jason Momoa! It wasn't crazy sexual like some of my other pregnancy dreams have been, but I got to make out with him and touch his chest and it was magical. *drools*
ETA: no wonder I've been in such a good mood today, despite DD's tantrumy morning.
@maureenmce The new Godzilla movie does look awesome! DH and I aren’t huge Gojira fans, but we’re getting more into them as adults who understand Japanese culture (but we also like monsters & sci-fi).
@morgantu Eeeeee! Congrats on putting down an offer - FX
@binxybaby Oy, formula allowed only when medically necessary?! Maybe I should inform our nurses when the time comes that I will break their rules and piss them off to make sure my baby gets some GD food. I’ll be triple hangry for him!
@clbness We’ve already received some samples too - and I am totally thinking about packing them in our hospital bag, just like @PensiveCrayon suggested.
I have randoms to add!
1) I bought a $20 backpack from IKEA to use as a diaper bag, DH thinks it’s perfect and is already excited to use it - score!
2) Got a surprise call from Toyota today - my car got in early! My sales dude called and said “Nobody told me it was here, I just saw it on the sales floor and noticed that it’s the same model & package we ordered for you - so it’s ready for pick-up!” We’ll swing by and get it later this afternoon - base model Prius One.
3) I’ve been having random baby dreams and love them! All I remember from last night’s dream is that immediately after delivery, LO and I crashed out for a few hours while skin-to-skin. No attempts to feed, no nurses compiling Apgar scores - nothing. Just nappin’ with a fresh baby covered in goo. He was tired.

@ab_canada I had a moment where baby girl kicked harder than she had up to that point. I was on a three-hour video meeting with a client out-of-state, and I jumped in my chair because it scared me! Then I almost started laughing because I realized what had happened, but I had to hold it together on video.
@binxybaby If you request that baby be formula fed and say you are not going to breast-feed, they have to give the baby formula. Nowadays, because of the baby friendly certification, they have to state that they will not supplement unless medically necessary so that babies whose parents do not request it are not given formula without parental consent. At one point, DS’ blood sugar was low, so I was given an option between giving him formula or pumping, so I know even baby-friendly hospitals have formula.
@echo-charlietango can I ask what car seat you plan to use in the prius? We have a Mazda3. DS is going to go forward facing behind the driver so that's not an issue but I'm worried about the infant seat causing the passenger to have to sit basically on the dash.
@katy0990 Thanks for the info! That makes a lot of sense. I had a feeling they would have formula...there are definitely plenty of moms who do not breastfeed, but it's good to know why they might be so hesitant.
@binxybaby It kind of varies from hospital to hospital, re: formula. As @katy0990 pointed out, breastfeeding friendly hospitals won't offer it until medically necessary. That happened with me, since I had an issue where I had no colostrum, like, at all. To the point that my DD wasn't producing a single wet diaper in 24 hours, which they need to happen in order to discharge you and the baby. After they made me wake up to nurse her every single hour for like, an entire night and part of the next day and she *still* did not produce a wet diaper, I finally had to ask for formula and they agreed it was necessary and helped me feed her with it. This time I am coming prepared, explaining the situation we had last time and will use formula earlier if this LO doesn't have a wet diaper after multiple feedings/hours.
One thing to keep in mind though, is that their stomachs are VERY small when they are first born. I believe the nurse said the size of a cherry or something like that, so they only need a very little bit of formula. If they have too much they may projectile vomit, like mine did (she was super hungry, since she got no colostrum, so she sucked down the formula too fast and puked! She did better the next time around!) Anyway, so if you plan to bring your own formula, you may still want to have a nurse help you figure out how much to use. Good luck!
@kristah2 Of course! We're planning on getting the ($200) Chicco KeyFit 30 Infant Car Seat until LO is 30lbs & 30", then up to the ($280) Britax Marathon ClickTight. We're not too sure how roomy the passenger seat will be with rear-facing LO behind the passenger TBH. When we test drove a same-sized Prius DH said that the backseat was roomier than my current Yaris, but we haven't fretted about the dimensions. I rarely drive with passengers because if DH and I go somewhere together, we always take his car (Honda Element). Hopefully the passenger seat won't be too crammed though, because I want us to drive the Prius more because I'm all about lower emissions and excellent fuel efficiency

DS1 was in the nicu b/c of blood sugar issues and I wasn't able to produce anything by pumping so he had to have formula. It was 15 ml every 3 hours which is half an ounce if that gives you any idea of how little they need the first couple of days and then increased from there.
@binxybaby even the lactation consultant clinic at my hospital has formula samples on hand. My son was unable to suck at birth because of being caught on my pelvic bone, so I had to pump and bottle feed 2 oz after each feeding and I did not always produce the full 2 oz, so it was a LC who gave me the formula that we supplemented with those first few weeks until his head was adjusted.
I feel like I have already said this and two separate threads today, so I apologize if I’m being annoying/ redundant, but this is YOUR baby! As long as you are not doing anything to physically harm your child, it is not the medical staff’s job or place to tell you how to parent. They will obviously give you lots of suggestions, which can be very helpful. However, at the end of the day, that is your child. You are the parent. If you want your baby to have formula, you are well within your rights to have the staff give it to you. If you want your child to have breastmilk only, Then make sure the medical staff is aware of your decision and they cannot give the baby formula without a court order. Yes, some of the hospital staff can be pushy and when you are hormonal it can be hard to say no or justify your decisions, but you should not have to. It is their job to care for you and your child as YOU see fit.
Perfect thanks @echo-charlietango!! I was actually just talking to a car seat tech who recommended the chicco keyfit 30 to me, she said its the shortest front to back on the market and would fit a newborn better then my snugride 22. Also I LOVE the Britax Marathon!!! That's what I have now behind my passenger seat with zero issues. I mean I don't have LOADS of room but I'm comfortable enough. In fact I just bought the Britax Essential Allegiance for our second car. It's replacing the Marathon G4.1 as the marathon is now just clicktight, the essentials line is the same but just static as opposed to the clicktight and about $100 less which was worth it to be since I use the latch system anyway and by the time we are over the 40lb max for latch I'll install with a seatbelt but they still won't be moved so one time hassle is totally worth the $100 to me.
Yessss to the Marathon! (Or maybe the Boulevard, I can never remember which -- we have the ClickTight though, and I love it to death). H drives a Honda Fit, which is a pretty tiny subcompact, so when we need to use the car seat in it (like, for long trips to save gas money) we have to push the passenger front seat up pretty far and I sit in the back with Bub for comfort. It works great for us, although with two kids we may have to stop using the Fit and rely solely on the Highlander for child transport.

We also have the Britax Marathon in each of our vehicles. We wanted it for safety and it was one of the few that would work in my Chevy Sonic rear facing with my 6’2 DH in the car too.
House update! Omg what an afternoon! Our realtor called at about 1:30 to tell us the sellers had selected our offer and were going to send over a contract with a few edits! Yay! Then about 20 mins later (before papers were signed), she found out they were waiting on a possible cash offer, and would wait until 3pm, so we might not get the house after all! Then, at about 3:15 we found out the cash offer never came through, so the house is ours again (for now). We are still waiting for everything to be drawn up, so it's not legally binding yet, but we're getting closer. Thanks again for all your good vibes and letting me inundate you with the progress!
@morgantu eeeeeee!!!! Fingers crossed the paperwork gets written up fast and you get it officially!
Our house just went up yesterday, and we already have two showings scheduled for tonight. Not even 24 hours on the market. Hopefully we get offers and we don't have to be sitting on two mortgages anymore!
AFM, I’ve been so busy at work most of the week I’ve rarely had time to post and only half-skimmed a few threads. It’s likely to stay this way for a while. See previous bitchfest rant about severe understaffing; and patient needs don’t slow down just because there’s fewer providers. So hi, I miss you all, and may be kind of sporadic for a while.
@binxybaby Making a mom feel shamed or uncomfortable is just not cool, but I wonder if it's because they offer donor milk first?? We struggled to latch at first so while we were getting the hang of it, they supplied us with donor BM. I admit i skimmed the replies, so I don't know if you covered this already.
@LLynde5 eeeeek! Fx for you! I hope you don't have to wait long to hear. Is your market crazy hot as well? It's so stressful!
@scaredunprepared yassssss girl! Are you waiting a specific amount of time to decide? Hope your offers so far are great and keep getting better!
I spent the morning in the kitchen doing recon: do we need to repaint or can we magic eraser this room into its former glory? And aside from some cabinet and windowsill touch ups, I think the magic eraser is living up to its name!
Thanks everyone for your replies! It is good to remember that baby's stomach is really tiny...I forgot how little they eat in the beginning. I do wonder whether they offer donor milk too...I'd be fine with that if that was an option.
I am notoriously a very "if the medical professional says you should do it this way, do it this way" kind of person, having grown up in a medical family, but I do need to realize that this is my child and I am ultimately the decision-maker. They can pressure me into a decision all they want, but it's my baby. It does really help having my husband. He will advocate for me until he's blue in the face. He's a good guy
