Re: What's in a name?

  • @bkosy I think about it all the time. We have our girl name picked, but also have one for a boy on the backburner. Ya never know until ya know. :D

  • @bswishe4 I'm in the same boat. We had a very hard time with our DS. I thought for sure with morning sickness that this was a girl. Now that we're having another boy we can't figure out a name for the life of us. I really loved our girl name too...

  • @tessiesmom26 oh I didn't know that. I never watched it. Hmm, I wonder if people will always associate baby with that show... I wouldn't want that. DH thought of it because of an English race car driver. And I'm just a big fan of last names as first names.

  • Another show I don't watch! He is pretty easy on the eyes. :)
    Pregnancy Ticker

  • @wannaflickone watch it. his character somehow makes him even sexier. plus the first few seasons are really good... or maybe they’re not, but i’m blinded by beautiful men :D
  • You mean theres a storyline to supernatural??? Huh... who knew?
  • I love the earlier seasons of Supernatural but stopped around season 5. When I hear the name Jensen I think of Jenson Ackles too.

DH and I are also having a hard time thinking of a name. We just can't find one that we both like. We found out we are having a boy and got nothing.

  • So now that we know we're having a boy, I think the name might be Maximilian (Max) John.  We'll call him Max but I'm one of those people that for the most part, needs a longer name to shorten lol.  (Although I like Luke and not Lucas).  Anyway.  Maximilian was my great uncle's name and John is DH's name.  It's not 100% set in stone, but we'll see.

  • Ladies. We are team green so we need two of each name. I have one girl, one boy, and that's it! Help! We like J's - currently have Jack Robert and John (Johnny) Paul Francis. Girl name is Josephine Audrey, boy is James Kelly. I don't even know what to do about middle names! Maybe my maiden name?

  • @KellyT22 I love the name Jack! Jackson is really cute too. For girls...J is hard! Jacqueline? Juliet? Johanna?
  • Anyone have middle name suggestions for first name Sylvie? I love Sylvie but can’t find a middle name I love to go with it.
  • @tessiesmom26 that is why we don’t even tell people the front runners. You’ll get some weird comments like “oh I knew someone awful with that name”...

@KellyT22 My boy name (which I obviously don’t need this time and maybe never) is John Robert, so I love both your sons names! Julia, Jemima/Jemma, Jameson, Jordan, June, Jonah, Jasper. I am a big fan of using a family name like your maiden or your moms maiden or grand or great grand parent names as MN.

  • @lifesabeach85 i think you’re the first person to mention maiden as middle here. dd’s middle is my maiden. lately i’ve been wondering what the norm is for subsequent kids. does your dd have your maiden name? and if so, have you decided what you’re doing for mn for your second?

Now that we know it's a boy we are pretty set on Calvin. But keep trying others out just in case.

We don't like to tell many people either but we have friends due end of September who are team green. I feel like telling them just in case they were thinking of it too. Sounds daft I know but we literally have no other choices!
  • @highsteaks I like the idea of mixing it up, if only to honor more people. One of my SIL gave both her girls her maiden name so it’s definitely done. My DD has my mom’s first name for her middle and this one will have MIL’s name. If we have a third, they will likely have my maiden name or my dad’s name. One of my newphews has our maiden name as his middle so I’m happy it’s been used at least once. The next baby in that family (due in sept) they are thinking they will do the paternal grandmothers maiden name.

  • My first name is my grandma's maiden so I am all for passing down the maiden name!

  • We aren't telling anyone our name choices, I'm big on surprises!
I love middle names that have familial significance. I wish my maiden name weren't so... last name-ish haha, I would love to use it as a middle name.

We are team green and are set on first names for a girl and boy, but they both start with the same letter. I'm not a fan of siblings names beginning with the same letter, so depending on what we have the other name goes out the window which is kinda disappointing. Middle names are still debatable. Our picks are Ruth Rosella for a girl and Russell Wilfred for a boy. Other top names were Hannah, Jacklyn, Delaney, Chloe, Georgia and Brady for girls and Sterling, Martin, Felix, and Nolan for boys.

For what it's worth - my husband shares the same name as his father and they both hate it. It makes things complicated at times.
  • @mrsdrez my husband shared the same first name as his father (different middle names) and it ALWAYS caused problems for them.

@mrsdrez My dad shares his name with his dad and grandfather (he's not a III, though, since his dad and grandpa had the same middle name, but my dad's is different).

It wasn't particularly confusing AFAIK, but mainly because my dad was called by a diminutive of his name when he was little.  My great-grandfather was dead by the time I came along, so I don't know how they handled his name being the same.

I also have two friends who have the same name as their fathers (one is a Junior, the other is a III).  One goes by the diminutive of his given name while his dad goes by a different shortened version and the other (III) can't shorten his name (it's one of those names that has no shortened version).  They're just all called the same thing.  I think it's confusing at times for everyone, but they seem to get on okay otherwise.

Junior was going to have a son who would have been the III, but ** TW ** unfortunately the baby was stillborn * TW ** and I'm not sure if they ended up giving him the name or not (he hasn't talked about it at all since the loss).  I'm guessing he doesn't find the whole same name thing an issue, though, since he was going to continue the tradition.

I'm personally really not a fan of kids having the same name as their parents.  I understand it's a tradition in some families and it's important to some people but it's just not for me.  It strikes me as self-centered and egotistical, but that's just an opinion of mine and not something I really judge people on.

I have no problem with naming your child after someone else in the family you were close to our who meant something to you, though.  Tributes are good.  One of my twins' middle names is the same as my beloved late uncle's first name.  It's not a name I'd have chosen otherwise (not my style), but I wanted to honor a man who was so amazing to me and who I miss dearly.

We’ve decided on the name Peyton Grace! My husband actually picked out the first name (he’s a big Tennessee Volunteer fan and loves Peyton Manning). @iheartbooks what about the middle name Rose?

  • @mrsdrez @ginny_203 @MojieJo DH has the same name as his father (who has passed.) In their family the tradition of the men having the same name is huge but we are not going to keep that going. Even the daughter on that side named her son after his father. That was the first question they asked us is if we are going to name our son after DH and his father. We said we don't know, but we are not. If we do have a boy (we are team green) it's going to be a big deal which I am a little nervous about, but oh well. They are Albanian and the name we have picked for a boy is the translated version of their name, so we will pay homage, but not do the same exact name.

  • @tessiesmom26 Oh, that's really sweet! I like starting a slightly new tradition while still paying homage to the old. If you end up having a boy, I think/hope his family would be surprised but pleased.
  • Ok guys- current faves are Bennett and Nathan! I like Nathaniel Bennet, or Bennett Sebastian (studied abroad in San Sebastian and traveled back there with my husband)- stuck stuck stuck on choosing one tho!
  • @eahayes do you have a preference for the shortened names, Ben or Nathan? Someone will eventually use those names, even if you don't care for them and never use them yourself! I hate when people shorten DS's name and I forbid DH from using the shortened version when I agreed to the name :p

  • @eahayes I love both Nathan and Bennett! I prefer Nathan over Nathaniel, but both are good names. Agree with @middleschoolmommy about the nicknames.

  • @eahayes I love Bennett! My vote is Nathaniel Bennett but I think both are super cute :)
  • @eahayes I love Nathaniel Bennett. Bennett Sebastian is great too, it’s just that Nathaniel is one of my favorite boy names. I think it’s totally your call how you feel about nns. I have a friend who named her daughter Elizabeth and she insists on the full name, no Liz, Lizzie etc and it’s been fine.

  • So, I have a few first names rolling around. I have zero middle names so if y'all have suggestions, I'm game. Here are the names: Logan, Grayson, Wyatt, and Graham, altho I think Graham would be a better MN. I dunno.
  • @wildrainbow I think they are all nice but i really really love Graham. I think the others are more popular, so I hear them frequently.
  • bkosybkosy member
@wildrainbow I love them all, but Graham is very nice and I don't hear it often (if that sort of thing bothers you). I had Wyatt picked out for my firstborn if it had been a boy so I definitely love that one!

@eahayes in your picture you look a lot like this woman who shops in my store! You don't happen to live in Maryland, do you? If not then I may have found your doppelganger.

On the subject of nicknames....I insisted on no nicknames with my firstborn and we call her by a nickname lol. My second's name is Anya. No way to shorten that, right? Wrong. My firstborn couldn't say her name so she would call her An or AnAn and now we still call her that. However I do believe if you really didn't want one you can prevent it from happening.
