@sliztee PDX itself is pretty liberal, but the rest of the state...not so much. It'd be awesome if we could use these differences to have constructive conversations and share perspectives, but every rally as of late has just turned violent.
Damn, that's so unfortunate. Honestly, that's what the entire country needs; conversation. The polarization has gotten so out of hand that we can't even hear one another.
@sliztee@chopchop25 yeah i really hate that the rallies and protests here in pdx often seem to turn violent, because I’d love to participate but don’t feel safe doing so. I think for the most part, people are peaceful about it, but there’s a smaller group of people who come to these things and just take it too far, which is a shame to ruin a good cause for everyone.
@rc-cola I very much appreciate your post, and the discussion from everyone. My cousin is studying for her bar currently, and is planning on going into immigration law. I've been getting most of my information from her, because she's actually sharing information about the LAWS that are being discussed. I was able to get a good understanding of Flores from her, the issues with the most recent EO (and the similar one Obama worked on that was found illegal).
I think what I dislike the most right now is all of the people that say "why weren't you upset with so-and-so did it?" "this has been happening for years, why the issue now". They don't see the true differences between what's occurred in the past 20 years and what's happening now. The Zero-Tolerance policy is increasing the amount of people/children being detained. The resources don't support that amount. People are being kept in box stores, tents, and other places with out key amenities needed. And those for it don't see the issue because "it's been happening" and "they shouldn't try to come her illegally". I guarantee you most of those trying to come here want to do it legally, the path is just very difficult. AND even if they're coming here seeking asylum they are being detained.
I prefer to buy ODD's clothes in the boy's department because she's very tall with long legs but super skinny with a small waist. Buying pants / shorts that fit her waist size in boys' clothing results in pants / shorts that also fit her leg length since the shorts are longer. Girl's shorts that fit her waist size always seem entirely too short.
Maybe I should start buying pants for my boys in the girls department - they’re short and I am always rolling up their jeans. I just worry that they’d be narrow in the legs.
Hanna Andersson’s girls jeans are cut very loose, if that helps. They look more like the way adult men’s jeans are usually cut, actually. I feel so ignorant about the sizing thing though. I’ve bought the girls clothes from both the boys and girls sections and never noticed that they were different sizes.
Thanks, I’ll have to check them out. TBH, I haven’t actually compared sizes, just basing it off what other people have told me. Maybe it isn’t all brands or you happen to buy boy brands that tend to run smaller?
I fully recognize the sad irony that I also too am nervous about bringing my kid to a rally about protecting families.... sigh. It’s super white privilege-y that I even get to make that decision when these other parents have already lost their kids...
I just thought of one after something popped up in my news food: "baby will come when baby is ready!" "Trust that your baby knows best when it's ready to come!" Um no. The baby is completely oblivious to and has no bearings on the workings of our bodies. Our body decides when we go into labor not the baby and sometimes our bodies don't do what they're supposed to do. Just because you're overdue doesn't mean that the baby isn't ready. It means only that your body hasn't started the process yet. This is especially annoying advice given to those dangerously overdue (42+) and also just seems silly.

@melbo444@knottieamusements be careful with primary.com. Some of their stuff is really high quality but some of it is shit. Generally anything in stretch cotton is a safe bet, but other fabrics are a crap shoot. If you want things in solid colors Hanna Andersson has a line like that right now, and their quality is much more reliable.

If you’re going to a rally in Boston I wouldn’t worry. We’re fortunate to be in such a liberal area that every time I go to a rally downtown it’s literally ONLY like-minded individuals, and everything usually has a really peaceful and fun vibe. I remember last year when a bunch of alt-right guys were supposed to be rallying on the common a couple weeks after the Charleston tiki torch shit show, and it turned out to be like a dozen guys tops huddled in that gazebo surrounded by a crowd of thousands of happy anti-racism protesters basically having a big Woodstock-y picnic.

True! I’m gonna be visiting family in CT on the 30th so if I go it would be there instead. Still liberal, but I’m not as familiar with the current profile of people that might be there.
My UO right now is my frustration With the occupy ICE protesters at our detained court. I am obviously on board with abolishing ICE and shutting this shitstem down, but there have been grave irreversible consequences to their actions. They never bothered to talk to the families of detained immigrants, the detainees themselves, or the advocates working with them. If they had they would have discovered that shutting down the court meant that people who have been sitting in detention for 3 months waiting for their FIRST court date are now back to waiting longer because the court was shut down. It’s actualjy devastating for these families and clients. Worse still - now ICE is saying the protesters have demonstrated a security risk and all detainees will now have to appear via video. This is really bad. Our clients are dehumanized enough in front of immigration judges. Not having an in person court appearance is actually extremely problematic but unfortunately constitutional. Worse still, it slows down the whole process even more. The jails can only do a limited number of video conferences a day, lawyers can’t meet with clients confidentially before, during, or after hearings because they are in 2 separate places, etc. I just feel like it is the most presumptuous privileged behavior to go protest without even consulting the people you are theoretically protesting for. And again, I support their overall mission, but the harm that has been caused can’t be overstated.
@rc-cola -WTF? And I’m sorry; none of this should have gotten as crazy as it has. I wish people were smarter about choosing who would represent them and that politics were more encouraging to ethical candidates getting and staying involved.
(I know that wish does nothing for today’s problem, but fixing the underlying problem would bring real progress on the substantive issues.)
Ugh, that's really terrible to read about @rc-cola. I'm so glad you can give us this type of information, because otherwise, I wouldn't have known. I don't live in NYC, but how can those of us who oppose ICE help? Other than donating and protesting, it seems hopeless.
@sliztee rallies and protests are generally a good way to voice opposition but it just needs to be informed and coordinated with the people affected and the people working on the ground. This was just an example of good intentions going awry and m it’s so frustrating.
It is a story about how the Russians are using social protests to sow discord in the US. (Please note- Neither the story Is not saying rallys and protests are bad, the story simply reiterates that they need to be appropriately planned and launched.)
I missed this last week so I'm chiming in today because I'm in a bad mood lol.
@SawyerRichardson I had a handicapped placard last pregnancy because of my spd and was using a walker so yeah I was definitely temporarily disabled. If I find an expectant mother parking space I'm taking it! Though not nearly as bad as last pregnancy, between my hip/lower back pain and my 3 little ones in tow you can bet your buns I appreciate the shorter walk to the door.
+1 for the sayings on clothes. My girls now have a few but they're "best sister ever" and "sleep tight". I got some bibs as a gift for my son and some of them had overtly macho/sexist sayings. He never wore them out. We basically used them to wipe up messes. That stuff just isn't my thing.
Also +1 on the constant sappy posts. I know a couple that don't even wait for anniversaries. It's pretty much weekly. My husband and I aren't even connected on FB lol. He pretty much writes only in his native language or French (neither of which I speak lol) so no point following him lol. I mostly comment only on my private groups or follow pages I like.
Still reading through the thread so my comments might not be as relevant to what's currently being discussed.
