I literally could not find a shocked enough gif to reflect my reaction to the idea that everyone gets an automatic episiotomy! So instead this gif reflects my reaction if a doctor told me that:
Yikes! This is in direct conflict with ACOG recommendations (for over the past decade) and associated with poorer outcomes for mom. Personally, I’d be searching for a new OB. But as long as you have all the info and are still comfortable with this practice, good luck!

Moreover, episiotomy has been associated with increased risk of postpartum anal incontinence.”
Yeah, you do you, but that's not recommended and I would run like hell from that doctor. And consider reporting them. I'm not being cut without an immediate emergency reason. That's just me of course, but cutting everyone is totally unnecessary.

^^ I'm here. It's one thing to need one, it's another to be given one basically for the hell of it. Makes it seem like the OB just wants the babies out fast rather than what may be best for mom and baby.

I’m with @DanyTargaryen. I had one with DS since he was stuck and they needed to suction him out, but my doc never suggested it before we got to that point. There are enough women that never tear that this seems really unnecessary. I’m hoping to avoid one this time. Those stitches were itchy when they were healing.
The one part of me that didn't get wrecked through pregnancy and giving birth was my vagina. I had no tearing, no problems, nothing went wrong down there. The thought of someone cutting it up just on account of because doesn't even make me mad it just makes me want to sit down in a defeated lump and cry. It makes me kinda nauseous too. Like I'm seriously having a moment over here thinking about someone cutting the one thing that was still ok and I think I might cry. And it's an important one thing! It's a really really important thing!
Like @nackie I also had an episiotomy because if not I would have had a 4th degree tear through my perineum. So she saved me a little, but I also had second degree tears to go along with it. Episiotomies are not standard practice though with my OB/hospital, thank god.
dexnie Yeah, I def did not want one. I am in Canada, so maybe they are more common here or just at her practice. I had a CS and a RCS this time, so I am okay with her. If I was giving birth vaginally, I would absolutely ask to not have one and it was even in my birth plan. I can't see her going against your wishes.
@mrsman2018 I live in BC and they are definitely not standard at the hospital I deliver at (as I'm thinking of asking for one... due to tearing in the same spot 2 times) However, one of my friends who delivered in Ontario, I'm pretty sure her doctor did them routinely, though she didn't end up with an episiotomy.

arcticseal-2 It is not likely standard at my hospital, more of what dr you have. She never told me she does them routinely, but I work at the hospital and a nurse that worked with her told me she does them routinely. We did not discuss it because of my SCS.
