@nackie that's frustrating with daycare, but awesome that he's doing so great at home. Hopefully next week when he's regular teachers are back things will go better. Buddy goes neck to school starting Monday and I'm getting nervous about how that's going to go. My small comfort is that they are the ones that have to mop up pee if they aren't being attentive. It says in their policies and procedures that they will help with potty training so I hope that means they actually will :/

@nlc8424 laughter is absolutely necessary me thinks when it comes to dealing with toddler life in general! We definitely have our days where everything makes us crazy, but I try really hard to focus on how interesting and hilarious it is watching a new human figure out how to life good.

  • @nlc8424 No experience with tonsils but we did an adenoidectomy in February.  It was day surgery and I was quite nervous. But the truth is, he needed it and he is doing so much better afterwards. If the doctor confirms that tonsillectomy is the recommendation, I would see if they can hopefully get it done soon!

@nackie how is daycare potty training going? Buddy's back in school and I guess since he's in with a group of older kids for the summer session they actually have set times that the whole class goes to the bathroom and his teachers say that he pees in the potty each time when his classmates do! I'm so impressed! It's only been 2 days but he's come home dry those 2 days so I'm really excited and happy about how they are handling potty time.

@stothi it’s going ok. He’s still having about 2 accidents a day. He’s in the 2-3 year old room, and about half the kids are potty trained. I don’t think the bathroom breaks are quite as structured or frequent as they could be, but still two a day could be worse, right?  The main teacher said it usually takes boys about 3 weeks to get the hang of it at daycare.
He did great over the weekend though!  No accidents at all (other than peeing through his diaper during his 3.5 hour nap on Sunday). And last night, after I put his bedtime diaper on he told me that he had to poop, so we did that in the potty too.
  • stothistothi member
@nackie I swear I can't sleep 3.5 hours without having to pee these days, so that sounds like he's doing really well!
Buddy's school day is short,  4.5 hours and they have 2 potty breaks at set times, so the longest they have the kids wait is about an hour and a half. (And they take the kids any time they ask to go potty.)

Btw- I'm so impressed your kiddo takes that long of a nap! The longest nap mine has ever taken was almost 3 hours and it only happened twice. I have a friend who's kid naps from noon to 4 pm every day. Every. Day. And sleeps 10-12 hours through the night. Every. Night. It blows my mind!!!
  • nackienackie member
@stothi he’s at school for about 8.5 hours and there are 8 kids in the class, so I think he’s doing ok.
And yes, he’s a good sleeper now. At school he only naps for about 1.5 hours, but at home he regularly naps 3 hours. He’s also sleeping through the night from 8:30-7 most nights. But that only started 4-5 months ago. Up until he was 2 he rarely slept through the night. Which is why I’m hesitant to start the night time and nap time potty training. I’ll wait until he gets back into a waking up several times a night phase for that :)
  • stothistothi member
@nackie that is some good sleeping! My kid sleeps like crap so we had nothing to lose. I wouldn't mess with nap or night training either in your case!

@pourmeamocktail oh my, four molars at once?  That poor kid, no wonder he’s cranky!  Hopefully they all pop through soon!

I know! He's a trouper, and now that I know what's up and why, it's easier on me. I just kept worrying that he was trying to get sick or there was something major going on that was stressing him a ton, or maybe he was morphing into a demon. I feel bad for him, too, but I'm glad to know the issue.

@pourmeamocktail lol at morphing into a demon. I worry about that too some days
  • Who has the City Select double stroller? I am pretty set on it but the price tag is scaring away DH. Is it all it is cracked up to be? Is there another just as good?

Whoa, that one looks crazy cool.
  • @mauishay that stroller is awesome!

@mrsman2018 my mom and I went to Buy Buy Baby yesterday to check it out and ended up getting the City Select double for her (and we’ll probably get the same for me, I just wanted to try it out first). Our BBB has a tiny stroller department but this had about 50. The salesperson had the base model for her 2 kids (same one we got) but also showed us the City Select Lux. I loved how the seats were so easy to remove and replace (and you could face them either way), the fact that both seats hold up to 45 lbs (other strollers had a lower seat limit) and the adaptor for the Chicco Key Fit car seat actually snapped in (an issue we had with our Britax stroller). The one thing I will say is it is heavy so I will remove the seats before putting it in my car (I think you can only fold it with the seats with the Lux version anyway). I was not looking forward to the hefty price tag but she said it was 30% off plus if I used my registry completion discount it was another 15% off. (I didn’t have a registry but I said I would create one and she just gave me the 15% off anyway.) For some reason it rang up as full price but they honored the 30% off.

I might go back there to get our second one, or I might wait until Amazon Prime day and hope they go on sale and use my completion discount. I will likely mostly baby carry and use the single stroller for my toddler so I wasn’t as concerned with the weight (it’ll mostly be for our nanny taking them on walks in the neighborhood).
  • @mrsman2018 I tried that out at Buy Buy Baby as well as the Contours Options Elite and actually liked the Contours better! It’s less money and seems roomier for my toddler. I have a giant kid, though! I’m going to use the savings difference to get the Joovy Scooter X2 next summer so I have a nice side-by-side as well.

I forgot to ask about that one! I did ask what other ones I should look at but there was only one other tandem double and it wasn’t the Contours one. I did see that it has a slightly lower weight limit (40 lbs vs 45 lbs) but maybe I’ll have to go back and look at that one before buying the second City Select.

I’ll take one of those, please!!! That looks awesome.
  • Omgoodness, dd gave me a helluva day today... she was nervous to nap/rest because I would be vacuuming... Much much later, I discovered she remembered that last time I vaccumed during nap she got out of bed and came to me with her “problems” (because I couldn’t hear her calling me). Last time, was also a complete disaster where I lost my cool and yelled a lot (total mom guilt for failing ssooo bad after).

So today, she is acting nervous but we talk out the plan and I leave to vaccum, sure enough, she has a “problem” and cry/screams at her doorway over the vaccum that she “feels her puking spot”( may or may not puke in the next 2 min). So I stop the vaccum, tell her calmly it is because she is so worked up, and then I stay distracted and let her caln down standing there. She then decides she has to poop, so we deal w that, and I tuck her back in. Then proceed to vaccum more... next she is back screaming because she can’t find her watercup... which I had left right next to her and was sitting on her pillow, so I reprimand, and send her back to bed, she feels her “puking spot” again, and I snap at her. So she pukes. Totally from emotional stress. Cue mom fail guilt all over again. I clean her up, tuck her back in, and try every bribe in the book if she will just stop crying and calm down so i can finish the cleaning. She almost does it, I get nearly done vaccuming and she’s back w some other problem. I again send her to bed, give her a few minutes and then let her have books in bed till I’m done cleaning. She continues to sob/wail/get distracted and read happily then repeat until I tell her the neighbor is waiting to walk with is and we are only going if she stops crying. So she does.
2 hours of nonsense noise. All because apparently getting out of bed for “problems” is exciting even if your a sobbing mess and it makes mommy super cranky...

    so.much.fun.

The best is 2 min after being calm “mommy wanna play with me?”, seriously?! Kid, I love you but ya gotta give me some space, I don’t bounce back quite that fast.

@jhjocelyn that sounds rough, I'm sorry for what sounds like was a long and trying day!

I need to vent so feel free to skip this post.

I really like my daycare provider, let me preface this all by saying that. We use an in-home daycare that is licensed by the state, and she is great with DS and he's always happy being there and has been thriving in all ways since we switched in October. BUT, she has had to close unexpectedly at least 5 times since we started in October and it really freaking sucks to wake up to a text saying that daycare is closed. Such was the case this morning, because her youngest son was sick all night. Don't get me wrong, I have no desire for my son to actually be there and get sick from contamination but it's just such a freaking hassle scrambling with a backup plan short notice in the morning before going to work. When I checked her out before deciding to go ahead and sign DS up there she said she has only had to close once in the last 3 years (beside scheduled holidays or personal days), and she's just totally blown that number out of the water in the almost 9 months we've been there. So far she hasn't made any exceptions either regarding payment, so she expects to get full payment even when she has to close unless she states ahead of time that it's unpaid. UGH. I'm so not looking forward to dealing with this when we have 2 kids in the picture.

My backup plan generally speaking is my mom, and she's happy to do it, but I don't know that she will be capable of handling 2 kids when this happens in the future. I'm at a loss for what to do. This totally increases the appeal of a daycare center, but it costs a solid $50+ more per week per kid to do that and also I know DS would get sick more often. I'm also limited with this because of the different locations I have to travel to for work and needing it to be on the way for both me and H.

If anyone has any brilliant suggestions I'm willing to listen, but like I said, I'm mainly venting.

TL, DR; daycare closed unexpectedly today and it totally screwed up my schedule.
  • @jhjocelyn that sounds like a rough day. DD also likes to push my buttons and makes me feel bad when I lose my patience.

@nlc8424 no advice, that's really hard and one reason why I ended up not switching DD to in home daycare. It's really nice that your mom can help though!
  • stothistothi member
@nlc8424 the only thing I can think of is if you have a friend/co-worker with a nanny who would be willing to let your kid(s) stay with them if you you paid the nanny extra for that day.

I really don't know what to say about your daycare provider other than I'm surprised she doesn't do something about refunding you for days that she closes unexpectedly. You shouldn't have to pay for that.

@nlc8424 I'm sorry about your daycare. That situation was a huge factor for why we went center, but the cons of the sickness and price tag are large too. Maybe sit down with her and renegotiate your contract? Is there a limit to how many personal days she can take? I would think a clause should be in there about how many sick/personal days she takes and what happens if she exceeds that amount.

My sister was interviewing home daycares this past month and her top contender wanted two weeks of vacation plus two weeks worth of sick leave....all paid. It seemed to be the norm., but had them running towards the center options.
  • @stothi no one I know has a nanny, but I don't have many friends in the area with kids.

@Lcardinal04 I'd love to suggest that she sets a limit to number of personal/sick days but I'm not really sure how it would be received. I think the biggest thing is that previously she rarely ever had to close because of illness/emergency situations. She puts in her contract her paid holidays, 1 week of vacation and a couple other days, which I find is reasonable. Maybe it's just because I haven't questioned it and asked whether or not she expects to be paid for those days? In this case I would have paid her today so she'll have to wait until Monday to get paid from me, but for whatever reason I feel awkward asking about whether or not the rate changes since she was closed. That's more so a personal problem than anything else though, I'm pretty nonconfrontational when it comes to money. I also feel like it's a hard job taking care of my kid and they deserve the little amount they get paid to put up with him 9 hours a day, KWIM? I guess I'll talk to H about it and see what he thinks about asking about payment.

    Thanks for the commiseration all.
  • And my DCP texted this morning that she got an angry message from a parent about having to scramble to find daycare and still get to work <--- definitely don't want to be that person. I didn't mention before, but she plans on adding onto her house to have a separate room/area for daycare. She also has a backup assistance, however hasn't been able to use her because it's been one of her kids sick and she isn't about to get all of the kids sick. SO, once the addition is built on, she shouldn't need to close in these types of situations since she can be in the house with her kid and the backup assistant can run daycare in the separate room.

@nlc8424 I would ask on Monday about payment change due to the closure. And go into it asking what I call "a genuine ask," as in you honestly aren't expecting one answer or the other and it's not a set up for them to answer the wrong thing, you genuinely don't know the answer so you are asking. (If that makes sense.) For me that makes potentially sensitive questions, like about money, less stressful cause it's very low pressure. Cause maybe she'll say, "oh, no! Of course you don't have to pay! That was an unexpected closure outside of our contact!" And then you'll be all, cool, I respect that and you as a dcp and I'm going to stick with you even if that means some occasional last minute scrambling. Or maybe she'll say, "pay up! I wantz all the moniez and I don't even gotz to work for 'em!" And you'll be all, hmm maybe I do want to look into a different daycare after all cause I don't like your attitude. Or maybe a, well, ok, I guess I don't really care either.
I think sometimes you need all the info before you can figure out how you feel about a situation.
  • yosemite2018  Lucky! How much was it originally there? I live in Canada - the province I live in does not have a BBB. The one store that sells it, you pay about $1200 for the City Select with another seat. I am waiting for a sale, but even with the sale I will still be spending $900 for sure. I was thinking of driving down to the US to buy one but it is hard to tell when the sales will be. With the currency conversion I am sure it would still be worth it.

We have the Contours Options here but I am not impressed. I want the Elite, which looks better, but we don't have it where I live.

That’s a bummer. I’ve seen the regular model at a BRU before closing and also wasn’t impressed. The Elite is so much better.
  • I think it was about $849 before taxes with the second seat (maybe $829) and I got it for $575 which also included the $60 car seat adaptor. Could you call a BBB in the US before driving down?
  • yosemite2018 Yeah, I could call them first. I hate how the Canadian dollar is so shitty.
  • Does anyone have experience with a BOB jogging stroller? I’m lusting hard after the double version, is it really worth the price tag? I’ve been using a cheaper jogging stroller with DD and would love an upgrade.
  • @arbell615 I have a single Bob. It pushes so smooth!!!! I don't have any experience with other brands though to compare. I really like it and I got it on a Black Friday sale. So if you have time to price shop I think it's a great stroller
  • @EErin86 thanks! I’ve read great reviews, it’s good to hear from a(n internet) friend too. Hopefully we can find a decent deal!
