@lcardinal04 I think it's ok for the two rooms to have individual styles. If you go with the grey, pink, teal color scheme I have a word doc of a nursery design I helped a friend with I can share with you if you'd like. Mostly inspiration photos and links to items that kept popping up in her Pinterest board (floral accents, poofs, rugs, etc.).
@starla that’s s good plan. For DS and this one, we used furniture that can last until they go to college and fairly neutral wall colors. One thing I noticed with DS is that the dressers that come as sets with most cribs are tiny. We spent the extra money to get a grown up sized dresser for both nurseries. We are doing cutesy wall decals in both, but they peel off the walls without damaging the paint, so that’ll be easy to manage when it’s time to convert to a big boy room.
@SkilledSailor thanks!! I might have to take you up on that! I think that’s going to be my direction. Neutral gray walls - with maybe a couple stripes on one wall. I still have a find a pattern I like that doesn’t look to over the top. Then likely some Etsy artwork.
I think I found a theme! I’ve realized lately that I am struggling w imagining a cozy room w painted walls. And also a bit intimidated at picking paint colors... I grew up in a log home, and DD’s room is pine board ceiling and walls. I made her room feel like Bambi’s thicket (we’re woodsy people, not adventurists, just living in it). I’ve never picked a color and had to live w it... Today we got out the hummingbird feeders and oranges and jelly for the Baltimore Orioles(beautiful orange bird that passes through this time of year).
And it brought me to my theme: classic hummingbirds. So, I’m picturing:
White fluffy/tulle curtains
Bright green wall art
Flowering trees in corners,
Paper hanging hummingbirds
Dark brown furniture
Greens, ruby reds, pinks that will blend and expresso brown.
It may develop into wild songbirds...No idea what I will put for color in the walls, or the floor... but at least I have a direction? I’m also really bad at just following a design. So I wind up making my own theme and figuring out how to pull it off. Hopefully this one sticks and I can make it as sweet as dd’s room was!

I think I'm settled on Robin Hood/Sherwood Forest for this little guy's nursery. I love saturated/jewel tone type colors, so gonna do dark teal accent wall and the others lime/chartreuse. I'm actually not too concerned with getting his room done because I know how little time he will spend in there the first 9-12 months. I'm stressing over DD's big girl room though. I'm thinking we will do gray walls with some aqua and pink accent areas. And we will recreate the wall decals from her original Fairytale Forest nursery at our old house. Picking paint colors has my head spinning. Her room is rather dark so I'm worried about picking the best shades. DD's nursery below:
When we moved into our new house we painted DD's room pink and the spare a light blue - DH prob was hoping for a boy. We found out today we are having another girl, but the room is staying blue.
We also made progress in the nursery this weekend. Room is empty, pulled carpet up and now hardwoods are ready to be refinished! There was a huge amount of junk in this room that we've cleaned out over the last few months.
@Jaylii I'm so jealous that you had hardwoods under your carpet!! And thank you! Our mural wall was painted. I found a tutorial on Pinterest that I tweaked a bit.
@SkilledSailor I'm seriously impressed, I do some crafty things but no way I could paint a mural!
My house is 90 years old. We've slowly pulled up wall to wall carpet in every room. Hardwoods have very fortunately always been in great shape and refinished beautifully. I told MH yesterday that ripping up wall to wall carpet makes me never want it in my house. It holds on to so much dust.
We’re doing very simple simple in the nursery. Since we are #teamgreen we had to pick something pretty neutral. We are going with this great yellow paint from Behr (rite of spring) in an eggshell finish. We’ve got hardwoods (1960s gorgeous 1 inch planks ❤️❤️❤️) so we will have a rug. Using a rug we’ve already got that is red. So we will likely do primary colors. Hubs is an artist and we have a lot of artist friends so we gave a few of them 12x12 inch canvases along with our color scheme and asked them to paint something for the little one around the theme of “woodland creatures”. I’m hoping for some animals, maybe some plants and hopefully some little gnomes or forest monsters.
I should quit procrastinating by posting to the forum and actually get to work on the painting since I accidentally ordered a fully assembled crib that is showing up on Thursday
@samd6 I love that your H and friends are artists. If you’re comfortable with it when everything is done please post pictures so we can all see! So much love going into your nursery.
@klj0228 for sure! It’s awesome to have artist friends but it can also be frustrating ** especially when these friends are flakey about commitments that fall outside paying gigs. We will see how many people get canvases back to us lol. Back up plan is to do fun little monsters that are painted/fabric collage things with the hubs.
Decided to move this over from Randoms, cos it got kinda long....
@sclarke7 We painted when we moved in, so we will be keeping the greenish blue shade that's already on the walls, (SW Contented), although I'm hoping to convince DH to get a can of our trim paint and do that, at least, bc we skipped it in 2/3 bedrooms. It was just too much to do all at once when we were moving in. Then I have a fun little palette of woodland things I plan to splash on on the form of decals, fabric details, wall art etc (things that would be temporary and can be changed later on) over a mostly neutral backdrop, plus dark wood furniture. I'm so excited to see it all come together! The wall art is from petite collage.
I have nine of these 8x10s I plan to arrange over the long changing dresser... Hoping to strike a nice balance of, "totally magical woodland meets not-a-nursery." :D
DH doesn’t want to paint since we rent an apartment and would just have to paint it back when we leave - Boo. So we’ve got that fabulous dirty-off-white wall color and apartment-beige carpeting. Once the room is empty (lol someday) we’re going to stick with neutral gray furniture and curtains. We’re going to do a coral reef/under the sea theme but I want to keep things light and neutral and just sort of accessorize with that stuff.
@ashh2018 I’m with you! 1970s California apartment with beige carpet and off-white walls. Ugh! But, you can totally still make that super cute with an under-the-sea theme! I love that!
DH is doing some painting and is going to pull up the carpet himself. It sucks to upgrade an apartment, but this is our home, so we are doing what we can. We have also been in this apartment for a long time, so we have less worries about repainting and we have the building managers approval.
@ashh2018 you can definitely do a lot with accessories! That said, we rent, too. And our house was definitely not delivered fresh-painted, "apartment beige," at all! Last few places weve rented, we painted and really the landlord never seem to have a problem with it if it's tasteful, kwim? But you know your own situation better than I.
The nursery room we painted Contented was a really on-the-nose mint before, so we kept it similar, just toned it down. Our current bedroom was an absolute wreck. (I think it was a teenager's.) We chose SW Cargo Pants for that, with Roman Column trim, and omg, it's just so breezy and spa-like now! YUGE improvement over what it was. And as luck would have it, in the spare room we just did one fresh coat to clean it up, and turned out to be pretty much an exact match. Glidden Jefferson House Tan / SW Antler Velvet. Funniest thing, that's the second time that happened to us. At our first place, we hit up the re-tints aisle and found a nice medium sagey green to go over the dining room with, and I am not even making this up - the re-tint turned out to be a perfect match for the diningroom colour, so again, just one coat! You had to look sideways to see if there were any dry spots we missed, bc it was such a close match. What are the chances!?
In our current place, we also toned down the dining room from a very saturated golden yellow to a lighter, more neutral yellow, SW Compatible Cream, and an absolutely horrid persimmon coloured red-orange in the den to a deeper, more stately red (I can't remember the name), but it feels more like a nice old library / study now than... I don't even know what. Like clown vomit?? :p lol Point being, sometimes an improvement is an improvement, a fresh coat of paint is a fresh coat of paint. kwim? You may be pleasantly surprised depending what you go with, that the landlord doesn't say a word. ;)
We finished our nursery during this past Memorial Day weekend. Well for the most part, I'll probably add a few more things here and there, since we are still a few months away. We had a small budget of $750 for everything including furniture. Our crib was a steal at $90 from Amazon. We wanted the room to be simple, warm, and classic boy. We based our sports theme off of bedding we picked up at a closing Toys R Us for 50% off. We got our wooden signs from a Hobby Lobby online sale. I DIYed the name over the crib for $10 bucks.
@nlc8424 Right? People share these beautiful magazine-looking pics, and here, I want to just post a pic of all the crap piled up on the guest bed ATM! :D
@haydeemf89 looks great! I’m jealous yours is complete already. I’m waiting for my in laws to bring us our crib so I can hang things on the walls and buy a rug.
@BusinessWife I’m the same! Our room is even less useable now than when I found out I was pregnant. At least before it was a functioning guest room. Now there’s so much crap piled in there you can barely walk
@SkilledSailor do you by chance still have that word doc of ideas? I'm trying to find items, but I'm not finding the color tones that I want. Gray, coral, and a darker aqua/turquoise/teal.....I have yet to figure out the difference in those colors.
I have a backup plan if they never happen, it just involves little to no decor. Theoretically, July will be construction month, and August will be nesting time. That’s what I keep telling myself, “no need to start till August 1”...
I do plan to have as much ready to go as possible- wall colors picked, curtains, crib skirt, wall hangings, possibly a throw rug, etc. so once we have walls it should go fast...

@lcardinal04 Sure! I can't remember everything I linked to but it's basically a big shopping list. I had all the aqua/turquoise/mints as blending and complimenting each other since they were just accent colors.

ETA Again: Ok My word doc doesn't want to upload. I copied and pasted it all in my following post. Inspiration photos below in this spoiler.
@BusinessWife@nackie@nlc8424 if it makes you feel better, this room was my husband's mancave beforehand and took us 4 days and 4 people in total to flip. 2 days to move out and organize all my husbands crap, 1 day to dust, wax the floors, and sort all the packages for the nursery, and last day to set everything up. The husband and I work full time and saw no other time in the upcoming future to get this all done, so we knew we had to just do it all at once. It wasn't fun, I envy that you guys can do it little by little lol Our nursery is also super basic, yours will probably be way more stylish and thoughtful!
Looking good ladies! @SkilledSailor Thanks for keeping it real with two photos - haha. Seriously, tho., your nursery is gorgeous. @mrsman2018 You can do a ton with blue for a girl! I love blue with coral accents, depending on the blue. Or navy and pink and cream look awesome together.
I made some progress too - I'll post pics once the art is hung. But far from done!
Only one coat of paint (needs at least one more, at least) and the crib fully assembled just sitting there. The other side of the room is a pile of drop cloths and painting supplies.
@samd6 I personally loved my glider, but buy what you’ll be most comfortable in! Also, I spent way more time nursing/snuggling baby in our bed and on the couch than in the expensive glider in the nursery which is not something I anticipated when I bought it.

@samd6 so I highly recommend getting a chair that has a tall enough back that you can rest your head/neck against. I like both the rocking motion and the gliding motion personally. I also would recommend getting a chair that has an extendable foot rest. We ended up getting a Lazboy chair which has been great for extended nursing sessions or nights where baby has been sick and wanted to be held.
@samd6 I love our glider. I used it for hours and hours when DS was a newborn. We just bought him a “big boy” chair so we could move that to the nursery. But up until a few weeks ago, we still did stories in it every night
@samd6 try out both and see what’s more comfortable for you. I loved my layzboy rocker. For DD’s nursery we found a floor model where the fabric was being discontinued, so we got an awesome deal. Hoping to do the same.
I love my glider and my 2 year old and I use it daily still. I seriously recommend one where you can put your feet up. I don't like rockers because the motion is too hard to generate with my feet up and they shift too much as I try to stand. Also plus 1 to sitting in it first and having head support for you. I love the idea of upholstered gliders, that later look at home in a den or living room, but I haven't seen one that goes past my lower shoulders.

Wow! I love all the nursery ideas. I am kinda bummed about the nursery bc I have no idea what to do. We live in a 3 bedroom townhouse and want to use the one currently used as an office for baby room... But what will I do with all of the office stuff. The 2nd bedroom is my stepson's (13 yrs old). Hes never here bc he lives out of town and visits for 1 month in summer and maybe a total of 3 weeks during school year. My DH wont hear of making his room the nursery. I'm a FTM and I just want the best room ever for baby. It seems as though she'll be sharing with an office. I'm tearing up just writing this. I wouldn't save for a bigger home for years, now I'm super regretful. Maybe it will all work out. My grandmother sent us a beautiful crib and dresser set already and honestly thats all that can fit in the office until we do some cleaning. Hubby doesnt seem interested in getting rid of unnecessary things. I just ned more space. Ok I'm done rambling and feeling sorry for myself. I'll just live vicariously through your beautiful nurseries.

I made some progress too - I'll post pics once the art is hung. But far from done!
Any opinions on glider vs. rocker?
