Nursery- The Big Post!

Alright, all, I figured we are mostly either planning our nurseries or struggling to come up with ideas. So, here's a nice big post where we can post inspiration, bounce ideas around, post progress pics, etc!

  • @knitknitread, love your nursery ideas, especially the rabbits! How cute! We're going to have to get some kind of wardrobe, too because my husband uses the closet in our nursery for his clothes. It's a small space, though so fitting everything will be a challenge.

I'm thinking of doing a theme of "oh, the places you'll go!" And leaving room to put up pictures of wherever the baby travels. We used that theme for our pregnancy announcement and I'd love to keep it going.
  • @knitknitread If you're using the dresser for a changing table I'd avoid hanging anything framed above it. You don't want it to accidentally fall on the baby! We have a small quilt tacked to the wall above the dresser/changing table to make sure it couldn't fall (and she grabs at it all the time).
  • We're planning a floral theme! Kinda floral and wildlife, actually. I found this wallpaper I'm obsessed with, to do for the wall behind the crib, and on etsy found some prints of animals with floral wreaths on their heads to do on another wall. The rest of our walls are gray, and planning to get maybe a dark purple rug, and a fun chandelier for the light fixture! Maybe a fluffy pink ottoman.

We’re doing an under the sea theme. We found some wall decals I love on Etsy that we’re going to put up. I’m still looking for some fun accent pieces and maybe a cool ocean themed lamp shade. We’re going to get some light grey furniture to go in there as well.
Our nursery is almost the same color as the photo. (That’s not me in the photo)

  • We are going to do a Forrest theme...just because the room (which was our office) is already painted a really pretty dark green! So, something like this....
  • I’m so excited to watch this thread!! For dd I did a woodland theme, her room is all pine boards so painting was not an option. We cut birch saplings and stood them in the corners of the room, I hung paper birds in one and all her hair ribbons in the other, her curtains were brown minky fabric with a more satin like green valance to kinda be “tree-ish”, and we made some canvas wall art of verses, songs, poems, and letter of we chose her name, all of it in nature colors with stickers, shells, etc. her carpet is a speckled cream and browns. I wanted it to feel like walking into Bambi’s thicket,
...and I don’t think I have any pics of the finished room...

This time, it will totally depend on our remodel situation. For now, baby is getting a corner of my room... I’ll make a matching wall art for this baby’s designated lullaby and letter explaining the name, if it’s a girl we’ll do fawns and creams/browns/pinks, if it’s a boy we’ll do fish/fishing, dark blues and greens. ...I think...

  • @MandyMost, I think you meant to tag @sarah-ruby-21

I currently have...zero ideas. Baby is most likely going to be sharing a room with my husband and I. So... I'm completely lost  And I've got an aunt who's itching to make swaddling blankets and burp cloths, so she's started asking me repeatedly if I have ideas
  • I’m impressed with everyone’s ideas! Like @knitknitread, I’m starting with zero ideas, but it’s kind of good because we have a modern and clean minimalist style in the rest of our apartment. The only thing we have settled on is white furniture (maybe more of a rustic distressed white)? And I like pops of blue and greys. Can’t wait to see what evolves!!!
  • We won't be decorating a nursery this time since our jungle theme was pretty neutral. But we will decorate a second room to move DS into so that should be fun. He's all into cars, trucks, animals, the typical 2 year old stuff so we can have some fun with it. But I'm good at finding decals on etsy/Amazon if people need help!
  • @SkilledSailor I love your theme and the items on your babylist! The nugget - OMG. How comfy and fun. My kids would go nuts for something like that. Can't wait to see your nursery when it all comes together.
  • @jaylii, until I found the wallpaper I posted above and became obsessed with it, I was thinking of buying a classic children's book and framing the individual pages as a collage on the wall, or using the pages in a different way to make a collage (like decopage on a table or something). Some of the old Little Golden Books and stuff have great illustrations!
  • We (I) did a loose theme last time of naturalist adventures. I was kind of inspired by the Cabinet of Natural Curiosities book and the nurseries below. A little bit vintage, a little boho, some touches of nature. Less baby and more grown up, but with the thought behind it of "Go out and explore and learn, little love." I'm the one appreciating the space, not the baby, so I put together what I liked! And it was gender neutral enough to me to use again, although I did add "girly" accents that I could switch out later if I'd wanted to. (Can I take this time to mourn the end of Polyvore? It was super fashion-heavy but it was a great site to put together inspiration boards in a way that Pinterest just doesn't do.)

    Pics in spoiler:

We painted the walls a super pale green, Benjamin Moore Palest Pistachio. My MIL thought we left it white... lol. I love that it's just a bit of color. I used that map as a focal point with a few other pictures near it, fabrics in different prints (a block print curtain, a concentric squares print sheet, a patterned sheer curtain, eyelet crib skirt), dried flowers pressed and framed with the botanical names above the changing table/dresser... We're just reusing all of it. I do want to get another crib sheet; one of ours faded horribly and wasn't ideal anyways. This is the one I'm eyeing right now, but I honestly haven't looked much:

Our big project this time will be the preschooler's room. All I've done to prep for that is look at a bunch of fabric for a quilt I probably won't have time to make.

@sarah-ruby-21 Thank you! Isn't the Nugget cool?! It's a local company so I've seen it at a lot of stores and it's so comfortable and fun. I'm honestly getting it as a comfortable place for me to sit and do computer work while LO plays.

@jaylii We are doing a children's literature theme for our nursery, too. Our color scheme is even similar. Purple is my main color, though I'm having a difficult time finding much purple that's not lavender. Teal/aqua and bright yellow are my accent colors. They may become my main colors if purple continues to be a problem! Haha

I'm planning to DIY a lot of the wall decor, and my crafty mother is making some vinyl wall sticker things, so I'm hoping that's how I'll get my purple in.

This is our first kiddo, too. I've been trying to keep the big stuff- like furniture- gender neutral, but I'm keeping the cheaper things and things that I'd use elsewhere in the house later (like rugs or curtains) or things she will be able to use in her "big kid" room later as girly as I'd like. Honestly though, other than the color purple and a few polka dot things I've purchased, her room is relatively neutral right now.

I wanted purple accents last time and had the same problem - even lavender was hard to find. I did find this site recently that is full of purple stuff. I have no idea what the quality is like (or if any of it is useful for what you need), but it made me laugh that they could do a whole shop based on things that are purple because they're harder to find! https://www.thepurplestore.com/

  • I think purple is easier to find if you’re not looking for baby/nursery stuff. I’ve found some great purple rugs, throws, pillows, and artwork on various sites like Wayfair and Overstock. Stuff geared towards teen girls sometimes has good purple stuff too. And don’t underestimate getting some cheap/used furniture (like a table for next to the rocker, or a shelf, and painting it!
  • @pourmeamocktail.  That's our nursery!  But mostly by choice!  We bought a used crib with mattress that matched perfectly my husbands old furniture from my MIL.  We used paint we already had (which made our original gender neutral a salmon colour that I never did like).  My Mom made the nursery bedding set in Winnie the Pooh, at my request.  And after she was a year old, I found some Winnie the Pooh stickers at Home Depot for less than $10!  My Dad after they are born makes wooden name letters that I paint and hang on ribbon for above the crib.

This time our nursery is currently pink and will be shared with the new baby and my 3rd daughter so we may have to change it to more gender neutral if #4 is a boy (!!!! who knows!!!).  I really like that first nursery @sarah-ruby-21 posted and definitely think with a paint colour change and finding bunny prints (which I'm a big fan of bunnies) I could do something similar!  Maybe a couple of other changes too!!!

  • @mauishay love the photo bombers in your nursery - haha.

@southernlady07 I feel you on the not-too-babyish nursery. Love your taste.
  • @southernlady07, love your ideas so much! I might have to use some. Our theme is going to be "oh, the places you'll go," so we've got some similar ideas but I hadn't really worked on colors yet.
  • @southernlady07 I love those ideas. I really love the blue dresser, and am wondering what color crib you pair something like that with? I imagine it’s an old dresser that’s been repainted, rather than part of a new set.

@redraider2012 Love your ideas and adding some purple to your color scheme. I agree that you may have better luck finding purple if it's not a baby specific item. If baby was a girl I was going to add some coral accents but just found out I'm having a boy. You sound much more crafty than I am but I also want to try and do some projects. Thinking of making a felt mobile for over the changing table or glider. Maybe I will try to make some artwork as well.
@southernlady07 Love your theme and inspiration pictures. Travel was a theme I considered as well. I saw a lot of cute hot air balloon art that I thought was so cute and would have used if I'd chosen travel as the theme.
  • jumpy57jumpy57 member
Yes I mentioned hot air balloons! At some point I will post a picture of the painting I did. It's still at my sister's house though. The room is painted teal with cream/tan carpet
  • I can't stop thinking about badgers

Now, to figure out a way to incorporate that in my existing bedroom decor (we've got 2 bedrooms, baby is rooming with us).
  • @Lcardinal04 I really like that navy dresser, too. I bet it would look good with almost any color crib - brown wood, white or gray!

@jaylii I love your reading theme, too! We are big readers and have some white floating shelves hung up on one of the nursery walls to display our favorite classics (along with about three other storage spaces in our house for books  :D )

  • DH thinks we can repurpose a desk into a changing table. I know that technically, with a top secured on, we could. But I’m concerned that it would be uncomfortable low. I’m 5’5 so not a huge deal, but he’s 6’2. I don’t want him to try to get out of changing diapers bc it’s too low and hurts his back lol. Has anyone done this? It’s a regular height desk, so lower than a dresser.
  • jumpy57jumpy57 member
@ashh2018 I'm 5'11" and while I certainly could survive with a desk height changing table I would much prefer my counter height one. FIL likes woodworking projects so he made us a changing table (and two bathroom vanities for our old house) and I love not having to bend over
  • @ashh2018 I agree with @EErin86. I am 5’11’, barely squeeking under 6’ with shoes and counter height is better on my back.

Is anyone doing a nursery right next to another baby/toddler room? DD’s room is bright, bold, lots of colors. This ones nursery is my Project (DH designed DD’s nursery completely) so I want something less bold, clean lines, preppier. My issue is that I feel like they will look just random walking by. So maybe choose one of the colors in DD’s room to carry through, but hopefully not matching?

    I’m liking these colors:
DD’s room is purple, aqua, and brown. DH wanted to make it like a beach on the bottom and sunset on top half.

@Lcardinal04 our new nursery will be right next to DS’s room. It never even occurred to me that it might be weird if they’re two totally different looks. Ours won’t have any common  themes or colors tying them together.
  • @nackie I’d either do TOTALLY different, or have some themes tying them together.

We are going for a simple nursery that she can grow into. The room is painted a light grey and we will be doing accessories and accents with a dusty rose, rose gold, and maybe some deep/dark purples. Maybe some other metallics as well. We're getting a white Ikea dresser that she can use when she's older.

Personally, I wouldn't do anything too bold or baby-like for paint, murals, and furniture because it's more money and time to change it when he/she grows out of it in a few years!
This. We painted DS’s room a nice gray with a bold deep blue accent wall. That way we can change up the wall decor without repainting any time soon. I completely recommend this route!
