Nursery- The Big Post!

Re: Nursery- The Big Post!

@jazzvaughn  that sucks not to be able to use a dedicated space for the baby.  Can I ask, how much is the office used and in what capacity?  We made a major shift if our house last year.  We had a combo living/diningroom, and then one big joint office all in the main floor.  But we decided it made more sense to have a dedicated dining room, (mostly) dedicated den, just with my desk still, and he moved the rest of his office (desk, filing cabinet, printers), up onto the stair landing.  That alone has worked out really well for us.  One of us can hang out in the computer while were watching tv, and in the morning, he gets up and rolls out of the bedroom with his coffee, and straight into his office.

Point being, is there a way to consolidate the office functionality and relocate that to free up a room for the baby to grow up in?

  • @jazzvaughn my first thought was the same as @samd6. If it’s a decent size room maybe it can function for both?
  • nackienackie member
@jazzvaughn with our first we converted the office into the nursery. We got a really small computer desk and put that in the living room with the filing cabinet. Everything else we got rid of. It works fine for us, but neither of us work from home. I would strongly recommend not keeping the computer and baby I the same room since it will make it hard to work when baby is trying to sleep.
If that’s not an option, could baby and stepson share a room?
  • We had a townhouse, and had the 2nd bedroom as an office. We purged a LOT of stuff, and then essentially set up the console table behind the sofa in the family room as the “office” with the monitor, etc.

we we ended up putting some of the office furniture in storage because we were planning to move eventually, otherwise we would have sold it.

How is often is your office used? Aside from storing all that stuff I worked from home 2-3 days per week, so it was used often. Still made sense to us to turn the room into a baby room and have the desk setup elsewhere.

I also think combining the office and 13-year-olds room. I’d purge the office first, then buy a desk/armoire combo thing where you can close/lock away the office stuff when he’s there. During that time you’d just have to work at the kitchen table or in the master bedroom. You could also set this up in the master bedroom if you have the space!
  • @jazzvaughn We moved on husband's computer desk out of our office to put first baby in. It made some space for baby, but I very cramped room because my desk stayed in there. But he uses his computer at night, so it had to happen. I ended up pretty much never using my own computer, because nap and after bed were the convenient times to use, and baby was in there.

So, until we moved, I ended up taking down my computer, and just moving my important files onto my husband's to use them during the day. His computer went onto the landing.

Also, pro-tip, changing table directly next to desk is...dangerous. We were changing baby with butt aimed at my desk. I started changing him flipped around facing the other way after a computer poop incident. It was horrifying.

  • @jazzvaughn I know ikea and other places have wall-mountable fold-up desks that can accommodate a laptop and other desk supplies. Maybe this could be installed somewhere else in the house or your SS’s room to consolidate to more of a guest room/Home office to make room for baby.

@pourmeamocktail at least it was only a computer poop incident. When DS was 6 weeks, I had a mommy’s face poop incident. It was traumatic. DH thought it was hilarious.
  • @nackie I'll take the face. Poop in keyboard, all over monitor, everything on my desk (like in pen cup, in/on everything!) plus all over the stack of clean diapers waiting to go on him. I was so happy I use cloth, at least I could just wash all the diapers instead of throwing away like 20...

it was epic and huge and took more than 2 hours to clean. I don't like poop on my face, but faces are SF much easier to thoroughly wash than computer parts....so many nooks and crannies, and can't just soak with water/bleach/wet cleaners/etc. So ick.

@pourmeamocktail wow, that was quite the poop!
  • @nackie Yeah, he was...impressive. His breastfeeding poops especially. We learned that the risk of putting on diaper cream wasn't worth it, pretty much ever.

Ok... You guys have given me some hope. I definitely do not use my office space except to store books, papers, and records... Teaching stuff... He uses it sometimes. There are 3 surfaces in there right now that act as desks. Smh... We even have 2 identical printers so I'm going to try to sell or give 1 away. The two of us can definitely purge. I just have to get hubby on board. I dont know if I could fit a small desk in SS bedroom or not but the closet in his room can definitely be used to store the things we have to keep. We already moved our 2 dogs out of the office to downstairs living area so a desk there won't really work. We literally just need to close our eyes and get rid of some things. Maybe a small place to hold mail in kitchen would help too.

Ok. Thanks so much guys. I'm going to go buy lots of trash bags and get to work downsizing. I soooo appreciate your questions and ideas!!! I'll be sure to give an update.

OMG about the poopie computer and parts!!! I can so visualize that happening. Ewwwww.

Has anyone found a glider/ottoman set that they love? I'm not interested in a recliner. I've sat in a few and there's a couple of problems. They don't rock reclined and they're really hard to push back down which will be even harder with an infant.

It's hard because not many places have them in store so you can try them out.  think I'll end up ordering a glider from a place like Target, Walmart, buy buy baby because we can return to store if we don't like it. I love Wayfair but their fees to return are really expensive.
  • nackienackie member
@jaylii I got a set from buy buy baby that I absolutely love. If you’ve got one near you it’s worth going to the store to try them out.
  • @jaylii I got a cheap one at BRU honestly, and I really like it. It's not attractive, but it's comfy enough without making me fall asleep holding a newborn, it supports my head and came with ottoman. For maybe $200 or a bit less? Shermag I think is the brand.

  • samd6  I love the glider we bought it and still use it daily, DD is 20 months old. A footrest is a nice addition too.
  • jazzvaughn Do you need the office? DD2's room is currently the spare room/office. We are moving the office stuff out becasue we never use it and are leaving the queen size bed in there becasue I have no where else to put it.

Any opinions on glider vs. rocker?
I considered getting a rocker instead of a glider until I actually sat in some options at a store I went to. The glider I ended up buying can continue to rock while in a recline position, where every rocker I sat in no longer rocked once I reclined. The glider can also lock both sitting up and reclined if I don't want it to rock.

I have this one: https://www.dutailier.com/en/classic/943-chair/ and absolutely love it. It was not cheap.

Definitely try out some of both to help you make your decision. I think I sat in the one I ended up ordering for almost 2 hours in the store to make sure it was going to be comfortable for extended periods of time. I love it so much and still use it with DS so I wish I could buy a second, but since I have no idea how long DS will continue to let me cuddle him before bed it doesn't make sense to spend as much as I did on a second glider.

The one thing I would change with my chair is that I upgraded to the "nursing" ottoman. It glides the same as the chair does, but has a flip out tray to rest your feet on that locks the ottoman in place. I have never used this function and it was at least $50 more to get it.

I did the same thing! I never figured out how that was supposed to be helpful once it came time to use it, but I definitely insisted on having it and paying the extra!

I’m second guessing myself tonight... I went to BRU, ours isn’t closed yet and we need a dresser... but super cheap. We paid less than $200 for dd’s. Everything was 50% off, but the only dressernin my price range was a beautiful grey wood stain, like you can see the wood grain through it. I liked it alot, BUT the rest of our nursery furniture is expresso stained wood. AND the dresser is really the only piece that stays put as they grow, the crib will leave when the bed comes, and it will be impossible to find a matching bed frame... PLUS, my interior is a lot of wood already, and it is all light cedar, so adding a completely different wood tone feels weird, expresso works because it matches the darker pattern and knots of the planks.

Dh was fine w me getting it, but i just couldn’t pull the trigger. I asked when they expected prices to drop again and it’s basically any day, the target closing date is June 30. They still had a ton of stuff to move.

I really hope I don’t regret leaving it.

  • @jhjocelyn my H and I are having the same conversation about dresser vs armoire. We found out my parents plan on buying it and they don't care much about price, but even so, it's hard to commit to a piece of furniture like that!
  • @nlc8424 and @jhjocelyn I never much cared for the armoire because the drawers tend to be a weird size/shape and less functional than dresser drawers. They tend to be deep and narrow. Something to think about. I think a dresser is more functional over time IMO.
  • @wishilivedinflorida thanks for that advice. I've never had one in person before so I couldn't really say if I'd like it or not. Closet space is kind of a premium thing in our house since the closet in our master is small, the closet in bedroom 2 and 3 are big, but both have limiting factors (one has a pipe running through it from a wood fire stove, the other has some kind of wood cut out that limits storage too). Currently my clothes go in the closet in the master, my H uses the closet in bedroom 2, and DS has his stuff in bedroom 3. We're admittedly really bad about putting stuff away from closets that are out of season and/or things that DS has grown out of, and we probably could add additional racks/storage into one of the closets to make it work better. So I'm kind of leaning toward dresser as well.

Any STMs planning on getting a second changing table? I'd really rather not put a changing table in DS's big boy room, but beside using the floor, I'm not sure where to change him. Thoughts?

We did the changing station attachment for DS's dresser from the beginning and plan to do the same for this LO. Since DS will just be 2 when DS2 is born we still need a place to change him in his room. But we also bought a second crib instead of going to a toddler bed so clearly I'm not worried about both bedrooms being more nursery like.

  • @DanyTargaryen DS will be a little over 2 when this baby gets here and I don't anticipate that we'll be potty training before baby is here unless he shows serious interest. We also bought another crib instead of toddler bed but I'm not sure how long he'll last in it before trying to climb out. We have our changing table separate from the dresser in his current room, so I'm just not sure what to do.
  • @nlc8424 - In that case I would probably choose to look for another cheap changing table. The first thing I do in the morning is get DS out of his crib and change him on his changing station. For me, I'm all for maintaining that convenience even though it meant buying another changing station that we may not need THAT long.

  • My two year old also isn't potty trained But he is such a squirmy big guy that he stopped using changing table at 10 months old. For safety. His has all of his cloth diapers in it for storage though, so it's still in his room. Which is fine for us as it's going to be mostly shared, and once baby is 2-3 months old they'll be sharing diapers. Baby will sleep in mini crib in our room at first, and we're not sure how long, so middle of the night changes will just happen on my bed or in mini crib.

If I had two in diapers in two rooms, I'd either have a changing pad put on top of baby's dresser or a second changing table if I still used my son's daily to change on. We originally got ours at goodwill for $10. It's not the cutest but shrug.

  • @nlc8424 do you mean you don't want a full changing table or just a station? So, in DD's room we put the large changing pad on her dresser, and will remove that once she's potty trained. We also have a small table downstairs that is conveniently shaped like the changing pad (we'd had it years before DD was born, its a fold down dining table from IKEA), so we have a "changing station" there too (table plus a pad on top). For new baby, we ordered the dresser of her set, and will purchase a changing pad for the top, like DD's. That way it is easily removed and functions as a normal dresser once potty training is done.
  • @nackie I did mean full changing table. For whatever reason DS's current dresser has a ton of crap on top hah (humidifier, white noise machine, mismatched socks, a stuffed animal) so I can't see putting a changing pad/topper on that. So I don't know I'd be able to make it work in his new room either, but maybe since we don't use the humidifier as often and will continue with the sound machine it may fit? We can test it out and see. We have space for a changing table in his new room, I'd just rather not buy one.

@nlc8424 will the sound machine fit under the dresser? We never turn Buddy's off so it's on the floor under the dresser. His bedroom is ocean waves all the live long day, lol. But he doesn't play in his room. His room is only for sleeping and previously diaper changes.
My friend just kept the changing table in the new baby's room and took her toddler in there for diaper changes. If the new baby was sleeping then she'd change on the floor or her bed or the couch or whatever.
My back is too bad for floor changes (or even dresser top changes cause it's just a bit too high) so I would have gotten another changing table and just had one in each room.

  • @stothi my kid is way too mischievous haha. I can't keep anything within his reach on his dresser or on the floor that I don't want him into. Yes it could totally fit under it but that wouldn't be preferable for us. I'll consider doing a changing table top on a dresser or a cheap second one.
  • @nlc8424 Could you get some wall shelves to put above the dresser for the sound machine and other random items that always seem to be needed in arms reach?
  • @SkilledSailor oh that might be something to consider! Depending on where we put it that could be a good option. I knew there was a reason why I asked all of you ;).
  • @nlc8424 I second @SkilledSailor! A book shelf or wall shelves something that will be able to stick around longer, or be more useful long term than another changing table!

@nlc8424 we got some wall shelves when DS realized he could use the drawers of his dresser to climb high enough to reach all the stuff up there. Now it’s just the changing pad and diaper stuff (I’m hoping we’ll get him out of diapers for nights/naps before Sept so we can reuse all that).
Ours is mischievous as well. I feel like the “baby proofing” is never done and it’s a losing battle as he gets better and better hand eye coordination. Now he can open some of the baby gates and cabinet locks and I really don’t know what to do.
  • @nlc8424 we bought a changing table top to add to a dresser from BRU. When I bought it the sales weren’t as great as they are now, but we still only paid $80 for the topper.
  • Has anyone ever used their bathroom counter as a changing station? Polly's room is right by our pretty big guest bathroom. It's got plenty of counter space for a portable changing pad, not the ones that go on top of dressers. We have absolutely no room in her room for a changing station and the bathroom just seemed like a logical place.
