What's in a name?

Re: What's in a name?

@ashkee05 That onesie is amazing! We have yet to agree on any boys names as well so I may have to get one myself haha.
  • Loading the player...
  • We’re thinking Harriet Niamh for a girl, and Cameron Frank for a boy. Baby will also have MH’s last name as a second middle name, and my last name as his or her last name. Gotta break that news to the in-laws at some point!
  • @stitchnz how interesting! Why did y’all decide to do it that way out of curiosity?

  • @lifesabeach85 when we decided to get married, I liked the idea of us both changing our last name to a new name made up from letters of our existing last names. MH was theoretically on board, but when it came down to it, he didn’t want to change his last name. I didn’t want to go the traditional route of taking MH’s last name, so we each kept our own. The kid(s) getting my last name was the agreed compromise.
  • So, thoughts on first name Romeo?  Not sure of a middle yet but possibly James.  I've loved the name Romeo for the past few years but not sure I'm brave enough for all the side-eyes and comments I'd get.  We have a very common last name so I'm trying to stay away from top 25+ names, but I don't want it to be too unfamiliar.
  • @charliesmommy6 if you love it, who cares what people think! :)
  • @firsttimespartanmom you’re right! I’m just so indecisive I can’t tell if I really don’t love it anymore or am just my normal indecisive self. Guess I still have a long time to decide
  • @charliesmommy6 I think Romeo is adorable!
  • Now everything I was sure about is up in the air. Thought we had settled on the name Kaida Lee, for a girl but I was doing some reading and stumbled upon the name Seneca and I totally love it. Seneca Lee just doesn't sound as nice. (Lee was my moms middle name). BF pretty much gave me the go ahead to pick names. No pressure or anything :expressionless:
  • Needing honest opinions ladies. So our 3 kiddos all have names that start with the letter i. That wasn’t the original plan and DH really pushed for it, now with this baby he wants to kibosh all of it an make this baby a junior if it’s a boy. I feel like this kid is going to have a complex that everyone has an i name except for them. Am I being crazy ?
  • @jessielynn1 - are your 3 kids all girls? If this is the first boy then I don't think it's crazy to have a name starting with a different letter for a different gender. I my family all the boys start with a J and the girls start with a C. Of course if one of your 3 kids is already a boy then it may make your son feel bad that he wasn't named Jr. while his younger brother gets that name.

We still love our original name choices. Although we recently told DSD (7 yrs old) what we would name LO if it's a girl, Talulla. And she can't pronounce it. She says Tahlua (like Kahula only with a T). I just worry now that everyone will struggle pronouncing it. My MIL (although I don't hold her opinion highly) also can't pronounce it either and is less than enthusiastic about it.  Is this silly to be worried about? I love the name and all the nicknames we could come up with off of it.

  • @kamahina9 thanks for the input! 2 of my 3 kids are boys. I’m going to try and convience him this is silly to name your third son after you lol.
  • @lurvleybunchococonuts I don't think the name is too hard to pronounce (for grown ups, at least). I'm surprised your MIL can't pronounce. Maybe she's just...faking that she can't pretend it because she doesn't like the name? Doesn't seem out of the realm of possibility with the stories you've told about her.  :|
Do you plan to use nicknames more than the full name though? If so, it might not be a big deal if some can't pronounce it. I'm curious to hear if others say the name is hard to pronounce. Maybe it's one of those words like "rural" that is just kind of awkward for some people to pronounce.
@jessielynn1 I agree that it would be sort of strange for a younger brother to be a junior and not the firstborn son. I've never heard of that before; I thought it was always supposed to be the firstborn.
@horsecrazy406mama I meant to respond to this earlier, but I think the name Seneca is really cute. I actually like it better than Kaida because I think Seneca is easier to spell for most people. I think Seneca Lee still sounds really nice together!

  • @lurvleybunchococonuts I don’t see Talulah as being hard to pronounce at all? Maybe with a different accent? Like @offtoneverland says if you’re going with a nickname it really matters more if people can pronounce that but again, I think it’s a relatively straightforward name.

@horsecrazy406mama I think Seneca is a cool name

  • edited June 2018
@offtoneverland @lifesabeach85 thanks. I think my MIL is likely just being difficult about it because well... She's difficult lol. Yeah, boy or girl, I've been calling baby LuLu (much to MH annoyance, he says a boy can NOT be LuLu. I laugh and say momma's can nickname LOs whatever they want). But we also have thought of LuLa or Tally for Talulla. (DSD has about 4-5 diff nicknames we call her at any given time so *shrugy guy*)

  • @lurvleybunchococonuts I love Tallulah! And Lula. I totally get the difficult MIL, got one of those, too lol. But I get this. My mil is very southern and has a very heavy southern accent. When thinking of names I often think of how her accent will pronounce the name, which may seem weird, but if she’s going to naturally pronounce it off how we intend it, not only will it annoy me, but I don’t want my kid to get confused while learning their name or how their name should be pronounced. If that makes sense.
  • @lurvleybunchococonuts -its a great name and I agree with everyone above, MIL can we a nickname if it's tough or just keep correcting her till she learns it.

  • @eahayes Elliot is a great name! So cute on a little guy and a strong classic name on an adult.
  • @eahayes Elliot is my husband's name!  I love it, but I might be biased.

  • @lurvleybunchococonuts My brother's name is Jonathan my Nonna pronounced his name "Johnistone" until the day she died. My Nanny also refers to my cousin Summer as "Summers". I think it's cute when grandparents have their special way of pronouncing names. Mind you my mom might disagree with me haha (my Nonna was her MIL).

@offtoneverland My cousin wanted to name her little sister "Coco". Her parents named the baby something else but we still call her Coco (she's 4).

    @eahayes +1 for Elliot!

@offtoneverland Her reasoning makes sense to me! My daughter's picks are Sparkle Shine or Bingo for the baby
  • @bkosy Haha I love Sparkle Shine! Sounds like a great pony name. ;)
@middleschoolmommy That is crazy that your mom let you name your sister at only 5 years old. I wonder what she would have done if you hadn't picked a real name. I love that you named her after the sea witch.  :D

  • @lurvleybunchococonuts - I don't even ask half my patients what they named their baby anymore... it's too hard to keep a straight face. Soooo many made up/mispelled names. Like don't ya'll realize your child is going to grow up and apply for a job someday? Elizabeth or James is going to get a job over Ar'yanna or Jacsyn 9x out of 10.

  • It's been about a month, and I still really like the name Jake.

As far as middle names go, so far I am thinking either:

Jake Arnold  (Husband's grandfather's first name)  -or-
Jake Edwin  (Husband's grandfather's middle name)

I think it would be amazing to pay tribute to his grandfather for being the father-figure and male role model in his life.  We are so fortunate to have his grandfather still in our lives, so we would be able to share this with him.

For reference, our last name starts with "D" and is two syllables.

    Which do you like better?

@serabjorn I think I like Jake Arnold better, but honestly I can't put a finger on why... maybe because you can enunciate it more because of the stronger letter sounds than is in Edwin?  Part of my name picking thought process is what flows/rolls together better if I'm going to be yelling it in the future :D If I'm going to stumble over a letter or sound than that's not the right name choice for me :joy:

We also really like Eliot for a boy but can't agree on ANY BOY NAMES. My husband hates them all ESPECIALLY if they sound hispanic at all. He claims he's not biased but obviously he is. I wish we could agree on more names from my culture but we just can't. BUT doesn't matter, since I'm very latina and I have two french names...

    It's tough.

  • @serabjorn I love Jake Edwin....I think Arnold is too strong of a middle name. I like middle names that compliment but don't outshine the first name.

@the-lo Boy names are the hardest! Hopefully you can find a cultural name that you both agree on.

  • @mockingjay1 maybe people have gotten too nice when hearing the names people plan to use. Sometimes you just need to ask someone if they have lost their damn mind. Those poor children. I'm a part of a pregnancy after infertility Facebook group and some of the names are truly awful.
