Coffee is a good point. I will be able to drink more of it after this (I'm sticking to 1 cup a day now), although at some point no amount of coffee helps anyway. I hope the are not too many days like that!

  • @rosebud332 Starbucks all the way! I used to live a couple minutes from one and I had a gold card and would always meet my yearly stars in like less than a month. Now I’m like a half hour away from one, so I never get it. We have Biggby in our area, but the one in my town always manages to be way slow and their drinks are nowhere near as good.

  • @rosebud332 Basic bish away! I used to take my son on walks to the Bucks closest to us when he was brand new and we were still in Vegas. It was a good way to get a little fresh air and exercise, after all ;) Also, I’m a sucker for the star dashes. Alas, here in AL the only one in town is in the Target a 15-minute drive away.

@mittenlove86 Ha, Biggby’s! You truly are from Michigan, huh? :joy:

  • My three year old took notice of my big 'ol bloated belly today when he crawled onto my lap. It was a little bit funny, a little appalling that it's so noticeable already. The bloating goes down near the end of the first tri if I remember correctly, right? Please, god?
    Pass the sheet cake.

  • Random whine of the day - I had my husband order me like $30 of Thai take out last night because I was STARVING and by the time I got home the nausea was so bad I could only eat like, three bites and it tasted awful. And now I'm at work and, of course, I want it. But I left it at home. SIGH.
  • I am a rage monster today. My poor husband. He keeps thinking he did something wrong, when really, he just can't do anything right, no matter what it is. He is really struggling to understand this whole mood swing symptom

  • My stepdaughter built a fort that encompassed the entire playroom and I fell asleep during a game of Life last night at 5:45. Oooops!!!  Pregnant tired is NO joke!!
  • @morgantu Sorry you’ve been a rage monster! Hopefully tomorrow will be better.

I learned two amazing things today:
#1 My MIL is visiting later this month and we’re going to let her know that I’m KU. This is great because she knows that I love wine, and now I won’t have to lie to her about why the wine fridge is empty & unplugged.
#2 I’m flying to Alabama tomorrow for house hunting, and just found out that a friend is in the same town for work. Last time I saw him was 11 months ago, before his family moved to Japan! We’re going to indulge in Olive Garden salads and now I’m so excited that I can’t sleep!!

  • @clbness we went to the Delaware shore. It was so relaxing and we had great weather the whole time. Have fun in Orlando! Are you going to Disney?

  • So we hired a new person at my work a little less than a month ago. Today she told us she’s pregnant! This is the third time this has happened in 2 years (where we hire someone and find out a couple weeks later they are pregnant). There is seriously something in the water at my office because since I have been working here, there is always like 3 people pregnant at a time (we only have about 35 employees).
The good news is this will work out really well because she is my tech and her due date is November 7, so we will basically be on maternity leave at the same time!

Ugh ugh ugh. Went to close my daughter's window as I was putting her to sleep tonight because it's supposed to dip into the 40s overnight, and the damn thing is stuck open. It's an old rope and pulley window and I have no idea how to fix it; we could probably figure it out, but maybe not while we're trying to get the kids to sleep in the same room, you know? Old houses are fun, y'all.

She's under 4 blankets and I turned the heat up, and we'll move her into our bed when we go to sleep. Hoping her little booger head doesn't get too chilly between now and then.
  • @AGK2015 Oh no! Also, that is very cold. Is is not May?

@PensiveCrayon it's totally Chicago May! 80  two days ago, tomorrow high of 52. Still warmer than it was a couple weeks ago!
  • I just cracked open a book "the unexpected when you're expecting" and it is a riot! Recommending it if you'd like a laugh  :D

  • @echo-charlietango Amazing!!! Congrats!
  • Holy productive @echo-charlietango! Congrats, that's awesome
  • Super productivity is largely due to #1 Telling realtor that we’re fast buyers, and #2 Noting things in the following spreadsheet for fast comparisons (photo in spoiler)

It’s not perfect of course. The “detached garage” is a glorified shack. I’ll need to have it torn down and rebuilt, otherwise we will need to rent a storage unit for our tools and lawn care things.

At least I know how much I need to downsize though. We’re losing about 1,000 square feet, which is just fine.

  • What a spreadsheet @echo-charlietango! I may have to rip it off the next time we go house-hunting. And congrats on finding  place so quickly!

  • @PensiveCrayon We'll totally share the spreadsheet with you guys! Clearly I only mark more details if I like the house, so I don't use all of my fields. If I recoil around every corner, or if the kitchen is gross - I immediately slow down the pen. Works well when I only have one day to look. If I had more time I would have re-formatted my search parameters to insist on garages and full-size washer/dryer hookups, and increased the range 10K. SO many of the houses only had room for stacking washer/dryers, and zero had a proper garage...so it looks like I'm not buying an electric car while here, because I won't be able to trickle charge at home! But the neighborhood is cool, you'll love it.

  • @echo-charlietango Wow, less than nine hours... impressive.  It took us longer to rent the place we are in now and we'll likely only be here for a year or so more.  I'm so scared to buy a house!  Though I might not be if they weren't all so damn expensive around here.  Sometimes when I want to make myself sad I look at houses in cheaper parts of the country.  Do you flip houses each time you move?

    Pregnancy Ticker
  • @kadeephd We totally do not have the energy to flip! We like to improve and install little things that we love -then we hire a property manager, move where ever the military takes us, and let our renter pay the mortgage. We did sell our last house because it was historic (read: a charming pain in the rear), so we sold for a small profit after updating one room’s flooring, updating some light fixtures and installing a penny-tiled bar. Our current home only needed two light fixtures replaced, and I’m already planning on re-building the garage at our next house.
I’ll admit that home buying is intimidating, but once you buy one it’s easy to do it again. It helps that real estate debt isn’t negative like consumer debt is. I totally recommend using any realtor though. We’ve tried self buying/selling and it’s really hard without a real estate license -why? They use a lot of industry specific sites and don’t rely on publicly available sources like Zillow. Buying through a realtor gives you access to their secret world, and any realtor can show you any home for sale. If they try to pigeon-hole you into buying a home listed only by Company X...dump them right away.

  • ...our last house because it was historic (read: a charming pain in the rear)...
^this happens with renting too. I got trapped in the “charming” historic building trend. Then I learned it meant: archaic/inadequate heating, water/pipe problems, so much mold (I live in the PNW- it’s a temperate rainforest), etc. I look back fondly on them, a bit, it’s a “fun” experience if you’re adventurous. My last apartment was built in 1892, so when I was looking to move and management companies asked what I was looking for I joked “something built within the past century”. My current apartment is just over 10 years old.

I also like all of your advice on buying. I don’t know that we’ll ever buy a house (even though it’s probably cheaper than renting over time). We’ve talked about eventually buying land and building on it. That’s probably cheaper to do in our area.
  • Re: flipping -- one of the houses I looked at, which is actually in our current neighborhood, had been a rental for a while and was completely trashed and in need of flipping. The price was good but I didn't love the structure of it, and I knew that H and I would not have the time to give it the TLC it needed what with a) a 6-month old bebe, b) H starting a 6-month training when he got here and c) H also being in grad school. And also the fact that we have no technical knowledge of like...house stuff.

The other day we were on a walk around the neighborhood and came on the house. I pointed out that it had clearly been purchased and cleaned up and he was like, "It looks really nice. We should have done that!"

  • Also re: flipping. DH and I would love to flip houses, a lot of our problem right now though is affording it. DH hates debt, and doesn't want to use loans anymore than absolutely necessary. So we're living in my moms old house where I grew up, because she moved to AZ, and fixing it up some. All new flooring, finish the basement, update the kitchen and bathrooms. So far...kitchen faucet has been replaced (it went from dripping to a steady stream, so necessary), a couple rooms have been painted, and tile has been bought for the entry way from the garage/adjoining bathroom. Not laid yet, just bought. Granted, we currently have a friend staying with us until mid-June, so we kind of paused a little. Our next goal though is laying the tile we've bought and then cleaning out the basement so we can start finishing it. Hoping to at least get the basement cleaned out this summer! Maybe start drywalling if possible!
