2nd Trimester

Glucose test this A.M. forgot and a 1/2 a pop tart...

Feeling silly for asking this, but pregnancy brain was in full swing this morning.  I ate half my son's left over pop tart and I COMPLETELY forgot I have my glucose test today!!  How bad will it affect the test's outcome??

I'm so mad at myself.  I am usually really good about stuff like this.  I'm just afraid that my test will come back abnormal and I'll have to take the 3 hour one (which I hear is brutal!).  Anyone else do this and be just fine?  Will my Dr. just reschedule me?

  • I'm sure you could just call and reschedule it. My friend did the same thing and she failed hers.

ETA: But she had a glass of orange juice too, I'm sure that didn't help ;)

I wish I could call.  But their office opens at 9 and that's when my appt is.  Ugh, and it's not close.

  • You need to reschedule.  Just call and let them know...I'm sure it happens all the time so I wouldn't worry about it.  The Pop Tart will def. effect your test.

  • I would call and reschedule. My office is badass about the glucose test - if a mom walks in chewing gum before her test they will make her reschedule.
  • I have 2 kids already and both of my tests were in the afternoon. I ate like I normally would. I never had to fast so I'd still go. I don't think it should be a problem.

  • Even if they open at 9, they probably have an answering service who can get them the message as soon as they are there...

  • I'm sure your already at your appt. but the best thing to do is drink milk or some kind of long acting carb that keeps your BS stable.
  • Before my test, my doctor told me to eat normally.  If you eat sugar normally, eat it.  The test is to measure how your body processes sugar, and if you're having issues, you need to know.  Avoiding certain foods before the test is just going to sway the results, not affect whether or not you actually have/get GD.

  • I'm here now but the Dr isn't. So they have to wait to ask him. Its been over two hours since I ate and the nurse said it may not be a problem since its been a while. Guess I'll just have to wait it out for now. And pregnancy brain has reared its head again, I forgot my book to read and my cash to pay for parking. Ha, so not starting my morning out well!

  • Well good luck that your day gets better.  But hey if for some reason you do fail it.  My doc says they set the limits low so that they don't miss anyone.  I know no one wants to do the 3hr test but it I know alot that go to the long test don't actually have GD.  I can't see that a pop tart would really sway your results after you down all the sugar from their drink.  Happy thoughts!
  • From what I understand there are fasting numbers and non-fasting numbers that are tested.  If they test for non-fasting numbers and you didn't fast that could affect the outcome.  It all depends on your office. I would call and leave a message on their answering machine and call right at 9.  Or just go and tell them but they will probably make you reschedule.

  • I'm sure you will be fine.

Last time I had a pack of chocolate ding dongs like 1 hour or 2 before my test.  I forgot also.  Everything still came back normal.

  • They told me I would've need to come in anyways because they were doing my monthly appt at the same time. So glad I didn't cancel!  It's a mess trying to get in with him otherwise!  He told me I could go take the test if I wanted since over 3 hours passed, but it was likely the test would come back skewed.  Luckily the lab place I'll need to go to takes walk-ins all day everyday and they have multiple offices around town (which means no having to drive all they way to my Dr's office) and so I said I'd go tomorrow morning to be on the safe side.

  • With my last pregnancy, I ate a bowl of cereal, bc they didn't tell me to fast.  I faileed.  Had to take the 3 hour and passed all three hours.

Just know you will probably fail.

  • The idea of the test is to see how you react to sugar.  So yeah you had half a poptart, but wouldn't you rather know if half a poptart causes problems with your sugar levels?  I'd take the test, and if you have to take the 3 hour test so be it.

FWIW I fasted with my first and was borderline.  I ate strawberries and cream oatmeal before this time and passed with flying colors.

  • Probably too late to chime in on this but I'd reschedule it.  You may indeed fail the 1 hour and then you are forced to go in and do the 3 hour blood test (ie. drawing blood 4 times in a span of 4 hours while you have to wait at the Doctors office)  Which is no fun at all.  It is just a simple 1 time blood draw.  I'm sure it is fine to cancel.  :)

  • at my one hour i was told to eat normally. i didnt have to fast or anything and it was fine. i dont think half a pop tart will really mess with your outcome, you have to drink that super sugary stuff anyway!
