Re: GTKY: What do you do for a living?

  • @cmcintos Before I had my son I volunteered a day a week at a local rehab hospital! I soooo miss it and hope to get back after I have this one. They currently only work on seals and sea turtles but are waiting on funding to expand to dolphins and small whales. What do you have at your center?

  • I am CPA and I work as an auditor. My husband is a manager at Dominos. I LOVE my job. It's so nice to have a job I enjoy and don't dread going to every day. :)

I need to come back later and read the rest of these. I got through the first page. So many interesting jobs!

@maureenmce your job sounds so interested! Your husband's too!! My oldest brother loves craft beer. He used to work for Dogfish Head!

  • Joining this thread a little late, but just finally took the time to read through everyone's posts! We've got some pretty amazing ladies in our BMB!
@AdorkablePixie My best friend is an auditor and she absolutely loves it! She works for the state so she audits government agencies and public schools, mostly.
AFM, I am currently a PhD student in math education and I teach precalculus classes to undergraduate students. I love teaching math and my dream job would be to teach developmental math at the college level, full-time! I do plan to take a leave-of-absence next school year since I'll be a FTM and want to spend some time with baby bean!
DH works in the meat department at a local grocery store. He loves it, and he is definitely the cook in our family!
@nerdeebird and @kadeephd Excited to see some other PhD students on here and to go through this journey together!

Is he looking for a best friend?
there are two motivations in sports, which is yours?
  • I'm the marketing director (slash I do everything because it's only me) for a software development firm. DH is a teacher.

I'm in a weird place - my company is very comfortable and this job is what I know how to do, but I wouldn't say I love what I do. I was at a creative agency for a few years before this role, and I definitely don't want to go back to an agency. I don't know what else I want to do - or could do that would offer me this pay, flexibility, and autonomy. I wish I could garden and be with DD full time.
  • I am a SAHM and work part time for Hallmark. I also am a maternity/ newborn photographer. I currently work with a local maternity charity. The charity houses the women and help them finish school, get a job during pregnancy and about 6 months pp.

DH recently got a promotion and is now a commercial fire alarm programmer.
  • @AdorkablePixie Oh wow, my husband loves Dogfish Head! He's met their owner (Sam, I want to say?) at a couple of events and he's so nice. Did your husband like working there? And yes, our jobs are interesting, albeit CRAZY exhausting, long hours, etc. so there are up and downsides, haha. :)
  • I'm joining this conversation a little late. But it's very cool to hear about everyone's different backgrounds - we've got quite the race of experiences. I'm a brand new supply teacher and right now I am covering someone else's maternity leave till summer. I just graduated in December so it's pretty new. My husband works for a family company recycling electronics.

  • @maureenmce He LOVED it there. They got a free case of beer every payday and on Fridays they had "beer thirty" where they'd all go have a beer. The only reason he left was because they were having trouble selling their house and his old employer offered him more money to come back. He regretted it.

@mag1cbeli3ver That's awesome! I love accounting/auditing. It's like putting a puzzle together and when the picture is complete it's so rewarding. :) I love math too. It's nice you will be able to take a leave of absence!

  • @sterjacks21 You should be fine with the weights, as long as its not more intense or heavier than what you did pre-pregnancy. I didn't really cut back my workout at all last pregnancy and I don't intend to this time either unless it's medically necessary! :) I may need to consult you on how to get rid of my baby pooch once this LO is born. ;)

@laceyrochelle I am sure that's a stressful career but also interesting and rewarding, when things go right.

I’m a clinical research coordinator at an epilepsy center in a university hospital. We do adult epilepsy clinical trials (mostly pharmaceuticals, a few devices, and a few observational/random studies). I kind of do it all, from recruiting patients to conducting clinic visits to submitting things to the FDA to running around like an asshole trying to herd cats. It’s a lot of fun seeing the people who are actually helped by some of the newer stuff being developed, especially when nothing has helped them before.

edit: if I could ever get my life together I’d go back for my PhD in clinical psychology (I have a masters in psych now). I’m thinking after this kid since it will be my last.

@MDKC14 I used to be a server and bartender! I don’t miss the hours but I miss the community and feeling like my coworkers were family. You just don’t get that kind of closeness in other industries. I met my husband when we were both servers at the same restaurant, and all of my best friends are people that I’ve worked in restaurants with.

I'm a biologist.  Up until November I worked in a high containment lab with things like Ebola and Marburg.  The insane schedule was not going to work with having kids so I switched to cancer research.

My husband is a farrier.  He shoes horses.  Obviously we have very different careers :).
  • I'm in San Diego and work as an Intellectual Property Paralegal. My DH is a medicinal chemist and coaches club soccer. We're a blended family and I was a SAHM for my two boys until they went to school (then divorced, back to school then work.
  • @maureenmce They actually moved to Portland, OR after he was unhappy going back to his old job. I want to say he works at a different brewery now but I can’t recall.

@soccermom2plus1 My aunt lives in San Diego. I love it there!

  • Late to this thread. It’s so interesting to see what a range of careers you all have!

I’m a clinical psychologist embedded within medical teams (primary care clinics) in a major hospital system. I also do a lot of education of residents (psych and medicine). MH is in academic administration.

I love what I do but wish we had a more civilized mat leave policy in this country. I’d love to take a year or at least 9 months off like I was able to do with my first.  I don’t see that happening now.
  • @Katzalia I wish we had better maternity leave policies here in the US. Three months is NOT enough, and not getting paid for it sucks. I'm assuming you're in the US a well?
