Now that there are more of us here, what do you guys do for work? What does your spouse do? Do you like your job? It's always so fun to see the various interesting jobs people work on BMBs!
I am a Public defender. I’m the attorney you have a right to if you cannot afford one. Husband is a chemical engineer, so we’re basically opposite ends of the spectrum.
I work in reality tv, which is something I never would have anticipated. I fell into an entry level job in the industry after I graduated from film school, and worked my way up to story producer. I mostly work in post production (after the filming is done) so there's very little drama, haha, just lots of long days stringing things together and working with editors. My husband works in craft beer marketing and events. My job is interesting, but I don't want to do it forever. Looking to make a change once kid(s) are in school, hopefully move somewhere cheap enough where I could work on writing during kids' school hours.
I work for a bank in the loan operations department. I put loans on the system, do maintenance, pay out people's taxes if they pay escrow. It can be super frustrating at times, but I do love my job!
DH works for the Army Corps of Engineers, he loves it! Especially loves working downtown in the federal building.
@celette482 Public defender is a career I admire so much! I have a friend who is considering switching to that type of law. (She currently owns her own law firm specializing in social security, disability and workman's comp, but she feels compelled to do more to help people and is looking for a change.) Anyway, that's so awesome that you do that!
So, @maureenmce is Unreality realistic? My mom, who is a doctor, says that Scrubs was the most realistic tv show about her job. I’d have to say that Brooklyn Nine Nine, even though it’s about the police, is the closest to what my work actually is.
@celette482 I've never seen Unreal (I should watch it!) so I can't say, but I as far as what it's really like in reality tv, it varies SO much from show to show. Some are basically scripted, some are hybrids and others are completely spontaneous. The shows with big cash prizes are the most authentic, because you can be sued if production does anything to alter the outcome or to misrepresent how someone played. Not that things aren't edited for maximum drama, but they're absolutely bound to portray things as they happened, in terms of what leads up to the winner being declared. Like, Survivor is a very real show, in the sense of almost no manipulation by production other than, obviously, the challenges and prizes they present to the cast. Kardashians are basically scripted entirely.
And as far as behind the scenes drama, that really depends on the show too and how mature people working on it are. Most shows I work on are major network shows staffed with mature moms and dads in their 30's, 40's and 50's, so we are quite tame, haha. Travel shows are aaaaalways insane. I did a couple of travel shows in my 20's (got to travel throughout South America for one of them) and would never do it in my 30's!
Edited to add - I adore Brooklyn 99 and that's awesome that it's similar to what your job is like!
I work at a Child Advocacy Center. We work with the police/DCFS to interview child victims of sexually abuse, extreme physical abuse and child witnesses to violent crime. We have trained forensic interviewers who do the interviews. I work as an advocate. I work with the families to make referrals to whatever resources they need. I go with them to any medical exams due to abuse and I follow the court case through the justice system. I work with the families to make sure they understand everything that is going on and make sure that everyone is prepared to testify if it comes to that. I am a licensed Social Worker. My husband works as a water operator for a local village, so he fixes fire hydrants/water main.
My husband is a government contracted physicist and I'm a personal chef. I cook for each of my clients once a week and make an entire weeks worth of lunches / dinners for them in one go. It's a blast, but I'm nervous about how it's going to go once food aversions start to kick in / getting whiffs of certain foods that'll make me nauseous / being on my feet for 3+ hours at a time. Plan is to work through the pregnancy, but we'll see!
@maureenmce, @celette482 I was going to ask if it was like unreal too! I loved the first season of that show! Seems like a cool job. afm, I'm a sign language interpreter. A real one, not like a randomly flapping my hands around one. I also teach public speaking at a university, and I'm also a wedding officiant on the side Lots of fun jobs!
Edit to add: my husband is a microbiologist. He makes sure that if you put expired contact solution in your eyes that you won't go blind.
I have been a SAHM for 2 years but before that I did pharmaceutical sales. Although I miss my job sometimes I am greatful for everday I get to spend with my daughter.
My husband works for the county in social services.
I'm a biologist who works as an environmental consultant. In a nutshell, our clients, mostly developers and certain industrial operations, hire us to help them get permits from the government and to stay in compliance with environmental laws. My area is mostly water-related (streams, wetlands, lakes, rivers, their functions, and all of the animals and plants that live in and around them).
My husband is a PhD candidate in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. He'll hopefully be done in a year or two!
@hkom you and your husband are in the same field as me! I also have about 2 years left in my PhD in ecology. Being an environmental consultant is on my list of potential jobs when I’m done. Are you doing a lot of field work throughout your pregnancy? It’s hard to find other women in this field of work to talk about being pregnant with!
@nerdeebird So fun to have another biologist!! I love environmental consulting, but it can be really emotionally trying sometimes, which probably sounds weird to a lot of people. Being the middle-man between developers and the government is hard, especially when you agree with agencies, but you have to fight for the developer because they are the ones paying you!
I had several (easy) site visits last week and they absolutely kicked my butt. I am dreading what it's going to be like this summer when I actually have to be out there digging soil test pits and wading knee-deep through mud and water. Yikes.
We actually had a project manager from the Corps of Engineers do a site visit last year when she was like 7 or 8 months pregnant with twins! I can't believe she was even allowed to be out there, it was incredible.
I’m taking a break from my actual career as a chef to work from home so I can be home with the kids while they’re little little. Right now I’m a business manager for a company that does administrative work, remotely, for doctors offices. We take their incoming calls, do their recalls, confirmations, etc. It’s pretty monotonous, but it enables me to be home. The goal though is to open our own restaurants within the next 5 years.
I work in the rail industry (freight, not passenger) drafting and negotiating leases of railcars and locomotives; it's fine most days, but it's definitely not my dream job by any stretch of the imagination.
@maureenmce I'm dying. Like I want to sit with a cup of coffee and ask you a million questions. Reality TV lover over here. Not just the shows themselves, but the behind the scenes of everything fascinates me. Basically I'm a nosy people watcher at heart, so reality TV scratches a million itches for me. Lol
@westcoastfoodie Oh how cool - what kind of food would you serve in your restaurant? Would you ever consider opening a food truck first or in addition to the restaurant? My husband works with food trucks a lot at the brewery where he works and it seems like a cool way to build up a following/brand.
@littlewhitecottage Haha, day to day life in my industry is probably much less glamorous than you'd think, though I did work on a show recently that made headlines in the news! (Though now I'm working on a VERY boring show about car makeovers. It's a freelance, up and down life, excitement wise, haha.)
Home health aid. Also going to school for Occupational Therapy
Love that there is another tech here. Someone who understands the struggle.
I'm a nurse aide in a nursing home. I've been a tech for 10 years and despite the madness sometimes, i love my job. FI is a taxi cab dispatcher. We work opposite shifts so we don't get to see each other much. But it really helps to not have to pay for daycare.
@maureenmce we actually have a couple concepts that we’re working on. My dream is to have a breakfast place because there are so many possibilities. I think our first though, and the business plan I’m currently working on, is a South American fusion. We actually are considering a food truck for that, but this all wouldn’t be until we move to Austin. LA is just too iffy and expensive to open a restaurant. Which is unfortunate because there’s really only one brick and mortar Venezuelan restaurant here and it isn’t very good.
@westcoastfoodie Ah, I totally get it. My husband feels the same about starting a brewery here - too expensive! We'd have to do that in a smaller market. But South American fusion sounds awesome. I bet it'd be a hit in Austin, and they love food trucks there too!
I'm a school nurse at a preschool and I love it! DH is in seminary to become a Lutheran pastor. He still has a couple years of school to go, and I'm finishing my master's in nursing leadership and administration. It's so cool seeing what everyone does!

Hey @Activebaby ! I would love to direct the health services department for a school district. It might be awhile for that though because we'll be moving a bit for MH job.
