Re: UO 4/5

  • @pghctwife that makes complete sense. The second paragraph I am all for. How was your sons response?

  • @ssthomps he looked forlorn and sort of whimpered about it like a puppy lol. But he understood. I’ll circle back next time I go grocery shopping and ask him for suggestions. He usually wants a ‘snack for lunch’ which is like a slice of ham, yogurt, a little fruit or veg (baby carrots lately), and a few pretzels or something like that. And his school snack is goldfish and clementine.

He is now now saying he doesn’t like clementines, he doesn’t like grapes anymore. No blueberries. Only strawberries which he’s not having for everything in the day. My kids prefer bananas  and apples whole. He already won’t eat pbj, used to eat ham sandwich but no more. No cheese. Been complaining about ham.

I’m really complaining about what is still a good eater but he’s definitely pushing on the picky stuff and limiting down to just carby stuff. I need to pack him snack and lunch for kinder next year so he needs to come up with stuff he’ll eat. I’ll accomodate his preferences on that stuff, but needs to have some options that aren’t crap.

  • @ssthomps Interesting. For me it was very much tied to perfectionism, it had almost nothing to do with body image and everything to do with feeling in control, I would obsessively log everything I ate every day and rate my days as "bad" (more than 600 calories or binged and purged) or "good" (ate only apples). I still have all my journals from ages 12-16 and they are really really haunting to read but I do so every so often just to remind myself how bad it was. I am hoping that will help me see the signs if they develop with my daughter.

  • @legallykate it is interesting to hear your perspective. Thank you for sharing such a personal experience.
  • @legallykate thank you for sharing your experience. I too suffered from ED (mainly
bulimia) off and on from ages 14-27 and It’s always been a constant battle. I think installing positive behaviors for her is key and I’m with you on the not labeling of food as good or bad. Here in solidarity

moderation is.... DS eating 2 pieces of pizza and some crazy bread from Little Caesars tonight! Everyone has to indulge a little bit!

  • I made all of DS’s first foods. Puréed etc our of fresh foods. Not sure if I have the luxury of time with this one, but i want too. I don’t like baby food jars. DS is 5 in a few days and has no clue what soda tastes like and gets juice maybe 1-2 a week but it’s low sugar. He does get some easy snacks though and certainly has his fair share of pizza with DH. Fast food is rare other than Chik Fil A but that’s because we don’t eat fast food.

Hes gone in phases of loving and hating the same veggies and fruits. I won’t force feed or make him clean plates because I want. I ask that he tries and f he really hates something it’s either fruit or a pb&j

  • We also don’t force feed or make him clean his plate, but I don’t make a separate meal either. I try to always have something that I know he likes and I try to encourage him to try anything new. We don’t eat a lot of fast food either. We do pizza and chick fil a, but the chick fil a just started since I’ve been pregnant. Now I want chick fil a...
  • What are some things you ladies say or do to get your kids to try new foods? DS was a really good eater at one point, but now will hardly try anything new. We won’t give him a snack if he doesn’t eat his dinner, we just tell him that he will have to eat more of his dinner if he gets hungry later, but he never seems to want to eat it later! My biggest issue is protein. He won’t eat any fresh meats no matter how they’re prepared!
  • @ecwk I joined in December, participated for a week or two, and then disappeared. I haven’t been creepin’ on y’all this whole time, just had some going on that made me not want to be (even internet) social for a while.

@neeraja_k  I got a pair of Teiks for Christmas a couple years ago. I had wanted them for a long time, and was so excited. I’ve worn them a handful of times and every time I try, they hurt my feet so bad I want to cry.

  • @mrs_drc_rn honestly... I don’t worry too much. Depending on age and maturity and stage. I’m assuming yours is littler? Little kids don’t actually need much protein to get to their proper number - if he drinks milk, yogurt he’s probably fine. I know one of my kid did, my oldest maybe? Went through a stage like that, bc I looked into it to see how much protein he needed.

Just keep putting them on his plate, encourage (but don’t beg) him to try it, say it’s yummy and talk about what daniel tiger says ‘you gotta try new things cause they might taste goooood!’

Maybe stuff like casseroles etc that have meat in them so he’s getting the texture in a different form.

And dont make it a battle. Most likely it’s a phase, honestly. You are doing it right!

  • @pghctwife he’ll be four at the end of this month. I find myself quoting Daniel Tiger a lot! We do a lot of peanut butter or eggs so that he’s getting his protein. I aim for milk with two meals a day; he’s had issues with constiparion so I’m always trying to balance his dairy intake. I started giving him Activia yogurt a few times a week and that seems to have really helped.

I have been a little lax lately with preparing healthy dinners, so a lot of times it’s been takeout or DH and I are eating leftovers and DS will get frozen nuggets or fish sticks. I’m trying to get back into cooking on my off days and really want to encourage him to try new foods.

It’s funny how he loves some foods though, like cucumbers and tomatoes. I can’t stomach either of them but he gobbles them up!
  • Ha! Only me and my 2yo will eat tomatoes in my house.

i wouldntbworry honestly. Keep putting stuff on his plate, don’t let it become a huge power struggle but also don’t just give him snacks etc in lieu of the stuff you want him to have. He’ll move on to a different way to assert himself soon enough. My picky 5yo will eat meal he doesn’t like (like burger the other day) bc he wanted a second helping of whatever the side was but I wouldnot let him till he ate some burger.

  • My unpopular opinion is that I'm not a fan of any unwelcoming posts. I lurked a couple of weeks maybe, and it was partially because of the "who are you?" type posts. Sorry (not sorry) for crashing your super private party.  :#:#:#
  • I’m a part time lurker I will admit. But it’s bc I’m only on during the night. When I can’t fall back asleep and catch up on everything. And by then commenting seems odd bc everyone’s moved on. I always comment and follow up with the supportive posts. I do wish we still had the late night post. When it died down I didn’t feel right pooping it back up.

  • I fed a family of 4, including 2 teenagers who ate a LOT for $400/mo in Oregon, but now in CO I spend more than that on just DH and I, plus he eats lunch out at work. Regional variation is huge, but it's also that I find it harder to motivate myself to cook every night for just the two of us. It's also easier and cheaper to order out for two than for four. I've definitely gotten lazy, and need to reign that in when we add a new mouth to the table.
Where in Oregon? There’s no way we could spend only $400 a month here in the Portland area for a family of 4 let alone two teenagers! I don’t even buy all organic everything!

@calimom2524 that sounds about comparable to here. It $4-5 for a half gallon of the organic milk that we buy.

7425cait They say they want to expose her to sweets so that they're no big deal later in life. Turns out it's backfiring on them because that's all she wants.
Of course that back fired she is teaching her taste buds that that’s what food is supposed to taste like. So when eating veggies they will taste gross and bland. We train our taste buds and when you eat sugary crap all day why would you taste buds want quote unquote bland food. SMH.
Then again, some kids are just picky. My son doesn’t like veggies anymore but it’s not because he overindulges on sugary junk food. He only gets sweets on special occasions. We did BLW with him hoping he would like a variety of foods but still will turn his nose up at veggies the vast majority of the time.
Same here. Did everything the same with DS2 like I did with DS1 regarding food and no sugar sugar, I’d still do pb&j, before one and DS2 is waaay more picky. We also did baby led weaning. DS2 is just different. Of course he wants snacks, but every now and then he will eat his veggies. If he doesn’t eat his veggies he doesn’t get dessert. That’s just how it goes.

And we do dessert after dinner every night so long as the kids eat their veggies and protein. If they don’t, they don’t get the treat.

I will say DS2 has had way more juice than I would have ever allowed with DS1. In fact I don’t think DS1 had juice till after 2. And that’s partially because he has a big brother that will get Apple juice every now and then. But I don’t keep it in the house.

I think making a big deal about treats and restricting is a bad move. But that’s just from my personal experience. I wasn’t supposed to eat fruit snacks so I would hoard them and go crazy and eat an entire box of them when I could get them. It was not normal lol

    Pregnancy Ticker
  • Food... yeah. First, I can usually get away with less than $100/week for groceries. I don’t usually buy meat. We don’t really eat pork, we hunt for venison so rarely buy beef, and I stock up on chicken when I find it on sale. I mostly buy milk (non-organic but local, about $20-25/week for 4-5 gallons), fresh fruits & veggies, some snacks, bread, pasta, and DH’s junk food.

I grew up with hunting, fishing, freezing & canning food. I don’t have a lot of space at home to grow a garden, but I have a small one where we grow tomatoes, peppers, onions, the basics. During the summer I stock up on apples, strawberries, and other seasonal fruit and make my own applesauce & jam that I can. I also buy, dice, and freeze foods like carrots & celery to put into foods. I can my own spaghetti sauce & salsa, and we eat a lot of those. I used to do a lot more, but then I went back to school and didn’t have time.

Now that I’m subbing and have more time at home in the evenings, I’m hoping I can get back to a lot of that again. We got off track when DS was about 3 and I just didn’t have time to keep up with everything. I started to really rely on convenience foods so I could put dinner on the table and still do hours of homework. I found out I was pg with this baby about a week before I graduated with my Master’s, and I got really bad ms, so I’m just now starting to eliminate the crappy foods from our diets again. I’m making my own granola for breakfast and am finally starting to cook again. On weekends when DH works, I’ve started to prep food for the week. I follow 100 days of Real Food for recipe ideas, and I’m a big fan of the Pioneer Woman. I can always make her recipes with foods I find in my area. I live in the middle of nowhere and mostly shop at Aldi, Walmart, and a local grocery store, all within 10 miles of me.

We don’t really restrict junk food at home, but I don’t buy a ton of it in the first place. We usually have corn chips with salsa, and I buy grapes, bananas, and apples for snacking. DS doesn’t like most non-chocolate candy, and he doesn’t eat fruit snacks. He takes a sandwich, applesauce, and either cut-up fruit or whole-wheat pretzel sticks in his lunch with apple juice to drink. I’d rather send milk, but I can’t get it to stay cold all morning, so apple juice is easier.

DS knew about junk food & candy from a very early age thanks to IL’s. They were giving him kool-aid when he was in diapers. He gets the occasional can of root beer or ginger ale at IL’s or when we go out to eat, but it doesn’t happen very often. IL’s have a ton of health problems and think we’re weird and horrible for trying to eat relatively healthy.

  • @scottishlass1213 would you try BLW this time? I know it's not for everyone, but the food is fresh and not processed. We just have DD literally what we ate for dinner. We started with bananas and avocado, etc, but eventually just served her what we were having, so there was very little prep involved.
  • @mrs_drc_rn I’m late but I just keep on offering him the food by putting it on his plate but not making a big deal about whether he eats it or not. My son is younger than yours though. He doesn’t love meat either but will eat black beans, eggs, and cheese, so we do a lot of those things. He won’t eat yogurt which I hate because I think it’s good for you and he also stopped drinking milk about 4 months ago. Last night he asked for almond milk and drank a big glass of That. I was glad because at least it’s fortified.

I hear a lot of STMs switch to BLW just because it’s easier. Harder to spoon feed your kid when you have other littles to take care of!

  • We did real food mostly. Lots of avacados (which he loved, but won’t touch now), sweet potato, butternut squash, bananas, and oatmeal. I did baby food briefly but then started giving DS bites of stuff and he seemed to prefer that. I did cut it up small so I don’t think I really did BLW, but his fine motor skills developed fast from having to pick up his food  :D. I also got some of those mesh things and would put avacado and frozen fruit in those.
  • I didn’t do BWL but I am going to look into it.

I wanted to do BLW with DS2, but he choked pretty badly twice and it scared me off of it. I’m way too high strung for gagging - normal or not.

Sounds a lot like us. Traditional BLW scared me because although the gagging is normal, it just freaked me out too much so I cut his food smaller than I was supposed to. Some people on those BLW FB pages are NUTS and will rip you to shreds if you do it "wrong" so I definitely left a few of those groups!
Definitely agree with whomever said it's easier than baby food! He basically just ate what we ate!
And I lied earlier when I said DS only gets treats on special occasion because on the weekend DH will usually give him a donut hole or two from Dunkin'. I'm not thrilled about it but I have bigger worries and to everyone who said it's all about balance, I 100% agree with you. I don't want to give him any complex about eating/food like I have/had!

  • I mean, you do realize you are forced to lurk for a couple of days before they let you post? I'm just saying it was enough for me to be too intimidated to join in when I eventually could.
  • Hmm I will have to look into BLW because I didn't first time around.  Though you guys are mentioning gagging and I can't really handle that hahahah

This was me lol. I made purees for my oldest, and started to do it with #2 but he immediately refused and hated, lunging for the real stuff. So we did it and omg. So much easier. Our babies just eat what we eat from the get go. We haven’t had allergy issues thus far so I’ve loosened up on the slow intro too. Dh loves telling ppl that DS3 first food was chicken wings lololol

Read up on it! Gagging is ok and it how they learn to chew and swallow and eat. Babies gag reflex is way further up the tongue so they gag and deal with it. I’ve seen gagging and they always are fine, and never had anyone actually choke (which looks different).

its not for everyone but I think there are real benefits, and the ease can’t be overstated lol
