@kadeephd Hey! I was just looking at my old HCG results from my second pregnancy (successful one!) and this is what the lab sent back with my results! Hopefully this makes you feel better!
Guidelines for expected values during pregnancy:
Gestational Age (Weeks): Range (mIU/mL): weeks 1.3-2 HCG 16-156 weeks 2-3 HCG 101-4870 weeks 3-4 HCG 1,110-31,500 weeks 4-5 HCG 2,560-82,300 weeks 5-6 HCG 23,100-151,000
Do most people get betas? I called the on-post clinic today to see what happens next. I guess I do a pee test and they refer me out from there, since there’s no OB there. Annoying, but I’m glad I don’t have to fight to have a non-military provider because we’re in a town a half hour away that technically falls within the radius. So my son, for example, MUST be seen by the one pediatrician there.

I've had 2 chemical pregnancies prior to this so to say I'm nervous is an understatement! First beta 14dpo- 90. Progesterone 41.6.(taking 100mg oral progesterone daily due to low progesterone) 2nd beta 17 dpo- 355 Next beta draw will be 24 dpo (Monday) Fingers crossed. I have ZERO symptoms so that's making me pretty nervous.
I was just about to call my OB earlier to speak with her directly about getting a beta test done because of my history of loss, and then my friend said she would just order it for me. Thank god. Going in for the first round Monday so I can get some reassurance.
I got a second blood test Tuesday and the results look good. My first was 103 on Tuesday 2/27 and the second was 2000 on Tuesday, 4/3. I thought it might be rising too quickly but the doctor said it looks great. That's the good news.
The not so good news: I also was referred to a travel clinic to see if I qualify for Zika testing. I was honestly expecting them to say I didn't qualify. I've been reading a ton about Zika and I know they stopped testing asymptomatic pregnant women who had been briefly exposed because the rate of false positives in this population is likely to outnumber the true positives. When I called the woman I spoke with asked if I had any symptoms and I said I had gotten a rash on my upper arms while in Mexico. I can't remember exactly what day it was, but I'm confident it was between 1 and 3 days after arrival. The CDC estimates the incubation period for Zika is 3-14 days, so unless the rash appeared on the tail end of my estimate (which I don't think it did) it probably wasn't from Zika. At the time I thought it was odd, but figured it was a reaction to the sun or sunscreen. Only later did I become paranoid that it could be a Zika symptom. It wasn't itchy, which most Zika rashes are. I did have sort of generalized itchiness when I got back from MX, but I attributed that to readjusting to the dry air and also thought it could be a pregnancy symptom once I found out I was pregnant. I used 25% DEET bugspray the whole time while there and don't remember seeing a single mosquito or mosquito bite. The woman on the phone didn't ask about that though, just about symptoms and timing of exposure/pregnancy. Anyway, the woman said she'd check with the DC Dept. of Health to see if I qualify for testing. When she called back and said I did, I was nearly in tears. I was at school so it was not a great time to break down.
I went in that same afternoon (yesterday) and another woman at the clinic scared me even more. Practically the first thing she said to me was "these tests aren't very good... you could get a false positive or false negative." And then, "it could take 4-8 weeks to get your results." At this point I was basically hysterical. I wasn't even sure if it was worth testing. I'll be nearly 13 weeks if it takes them 8 weeks to do the tests. The woman on the phone had said 2 weeks so I was not expecting this. I also have had a yellow fever vaccine and malaria, which I've read can throw off the tests and produce false positives. I gave my samples and left in tears, without telling them if I wanted them to go ahead and test. I'm going to call them today and tell them to do it. I'll be anxious either way and the tests aren't complete garbage, so hopefully I will get a negative result and calm down a bit. I don't know what I'd do if I get a positive. Studies have shown about 10-15% of women who test positive for Zika in the first trimester in the United States go on to have babies with birth defects, some very severe. They know a lot less about long-term outcomes.
My brother and SIL are both doctors, my SIL an ob-gyn, and I've been harassing them via text about this basically nonstop since I found I was pregnant. My brother is not very worried. He thinks the chance I got Zika is very small and is confident I'll get a negative result. My SIL has not been as reassuring, but I am hoping she is just being cautious. She is more like me (a worrier) and is also pregnant, so I think she's more sympathetic to my stress, but also less likely to try to placate me by telling me I'm am very likely Zika negative.
Anyway this has been extremely stressful. I'm trying hard to stay calm since there is absolutely nothing I can do about it now. I've been compulsively reading Zika research studies, which I need to stop doing as it's not really helping. They don't know a lot about it yet and the uncertainty just makes things worse. I also have been feeling a lot of guilt for being in this position. This is my first pregnancy and my understanding of the role of parent is that the #1 priority is to keep your child safe. I failed to do that before I even knew this child existed. I should have been more careful. I also am feeling a bit silly and spoiled for having so much stress about this. I saw several pregnant Mexican women while there and they are living with Zika exposure constantly. I have been thinking about them and their babies a lot and hoping they are OK. I did look up official Mexican reports of Zika diagnosis and there have been 0 in the region I was in this year. That does not mean there have actually been 0 cases just 9 that were diagnosed and reported. That's compared to 358 from 2015-2018. Those women and their babies are likely OK, and so am I and my baby. I am just trying to keep this in mind. It's hard when I wake up every day at 2 or 3 am with my mind racing though. I haven't been able to sleep more than 5 hours since finding out I was pregnant. I'm having a lot of trouble thinking about anything but this, which isn't great because I have three major research papers due in the next few weeks. This is not how I imagined my first pregnancy starting off.
Thanks for reading my excessively long/oversharing post and please send some good vibes my way.
I'm sorry you're going through this stress and worry @kadeephd. It sounds like the odds are in your favor though. Even if you do test positive you might not have it and it seems like the risk of birth defects are low, so I hope everything turns out okay for you. FX that you get negative results and you can relax a little bit.

@kadeephd those studies can make things really scary and confusing. We had been wanting to go down south for a while. When we decided to put TTC on hold we really wanted to book. We knew we wanted to start TTC when we came back so we started looking into it before booking. I struggled immensely with the decision because doctors are saying wait 6 months after coming home before starting TTC again. But yet these numbers of contraction are actually super allow and then even with contracting it The risk it’s passed to your baby are even lower. Then the risk that the baby is born with defects are lower again. Unfortunately that possibility is still there, no matter how slim.
Ultimately we decided on Bahamas as it was just taken off the Zika list. Which I’m happy for now that I’m pregnant.
But keep in mind the actual odds being so low. Try to stay positive. And more and more places are coming off that list, Mexico could be soon too.
@kadeephd Oh hun, I'm so sorry you're having to deal with this. If I were you, I'd just keep looking at the numbers. They are in your favor big time. You and your husband both protected yourself while you were there, so that reduces your chances of getting it drastically, secondly, the likelyhood of you getting it in the region you were in has low occurrence, then, the likelihood of baby having any ill effects is so low. To me, it sounds less than a 1 percent chance of something going wrong. So so low. I really think it will be ok. Hugs!
@kristah2 Thanks for the good wishes! Zika does seem like it's slowed down significantly. There were nearly 12,000 confirmed cases in Mexico from 2015-2017 and there have only been 41 so far in 2018 (up until 4/2). Of course this is probably an underestimate since many people are asymptomatic and/or don't seek medical attention and reporting is likely not perfect, but it's still a big drop off. We originally had a vacation to Mexico booked for July, but moved it to March because were planning to start ttc in the fall (after 6 months). I was shocked to see I was pregnant when we got home. I'm now absolutely kicking myself for not picking a different location.
@texas_t I try to keep telling myself that. It's such a low chance. I think part of my problem is just pregnancy mood swings/hormones. Sometimes I'm able to be reasonable about it and other times I'm not. Thanks for the reminder.
@kadeephd Oh my goodness, I'm so sorry you're going through all of that and the anxiety you're feeling. Please don't beat yourself up about it! I am sending you all the good thoughts for a negative result. Sending hugs too! Please keep us posted!
@kadeephd That is super scary, but I agree with everyone else saying that the numbers are on your side. Stay positive and hopefully you'll be able to put the zika thoughts to rest soon!
My second round of bloodwork came in and it still looks good! Round was was somewhere just over 1000, yesterday's was about 2795. Wooo!
Just had my first blood draw. I should have the results in a few hours. I know the 2nd number is more important but I’m really hoping for triple digits. My stomach is in knots right now.

I just called to schedule my first appointment and the Hospital I used last time got rid of their midwives! I went ahead and scheduled with an OB for now, but man that made me sad...
But, I'm hoping they'll get me in for a dating scan soon so I know how far along I am! Stupid irregular cycles!

2nd beta was 1058. (first was 267 4 days ago). Not an exact quadrupling but close enough.

My HCG was only at 61 yesterday (4 weeks 1 day). I am going again tomorrow and I hope my number will come up. One miscarriage in Nov 2017 and another in Jan 2017. So, obviously not very confident.
