Has anyone here had to have dental work during pregnancy? I just broke a tooth and have to have it fixed because it's cutting my mouth, but I'm not quite out of the first trimester yet (11w2d) so I'm freaking out.
Talk to your dentist and make sure they know you are pregnant.  If you are concerned about any of the numbing agents/anesthesia/ etc they will use while fixing it, ask for the information before your appointment and check with your OB.
  • @drurose My dr prefers dental work to be done in the second tri. My dentist requires a dr approved list of what the can/cannot do and use to be faxed to their office prior to doing any work. I would call both your doctor and dentist as they would be able to help you out the best.

  • @drurose I used to work in the dental field before DD was born. Any dental work they'll want to push off in to as far into your pregnancy as possible. But if it's cutting your mouth something is going to have to be done. Anesthetics without epinephrine are safe to use during  pregnancy, but aren't as effective as the ones with it, so you may still feel a little something. I worked at a specialist (root canals) so I don't really know general dentistry stuff. I'd definitely go in though.
  •  Thanks. My dentist asked me to call my OB, who said she'd fax something over to them. I'll go today and just make sure everyone knows about the pregnancy and try to do as little as possible right now, and put more major restorative work off until later on.
  • @drurose Late to the party, but I work at a dental office. My doc faxes a medical clearance over to patient's OBs that states specifically what needs to be done. OBs usually give us very specific instructions to follow.

  • Hoping someone can answer. 8 weeks here, 9 in two days. Should I be gaining weight yet? I feel super bloated all the time and I can see my stomach getting bigger, but I've gained literally nothing. I actually think I lost a few pounds. First pregnancy, I am underweight at 5' 1" and range from 95-98. I just weighed in and I'm 94. Should I be worried? Seeing my doctor for the first time on Wednesday. I'll ask her about it but wanted to get other input.
  • It honestly all depends on the person. Some people lose at first because they've cut things out like alcohol. You're only supposed to gain about 4-6lb your first Trimester from what I've read and you're still in the middle of it. By 8w I had gained 2lb. I wouldnt stress yet.
  • Also depends on if you are underweight, overweight, or where the Dr's want you to be. Call your Dr if you are worried :) most have nurses there just to answer your questions!
  • Honestly, underweight, overweight or normal, first tri is hard and your body is doing a ton of extra work right now.  I think I didn’t gain anything in the first tri with my twins.  My body definitely changed and I could tell that while my belly got bigger, the rest of my body lost weight.  I could see it in my face and my husband agreed.

I wouldn’t worry too much about it yet, but definitely talk to the Dr about it.

@indias95 with my first I lost weight in the first tri because I didn’t exercise as much and had bad nausea. As long as you are not losing weight from vomiting and dehydration you should be ok.
  • Does anyone know anything about the Parvovirus testing? I got a call today that my blood work said I was immune but they only tested igG and not igM. Based on what I read, I thought the doctor needed both to determine immunity, but what do I know??
  • All I know about Parvo is that it's deadly to dogs... I didn't realize they tested for it in humans.
  • @sammierose464 human parvovirus and canine parvovirus are different viruses. Similarly named because they both come from the family Parvoviridae, but very different genus and species and they affect their respective species very differently.

As for human parvo, I know diddly about it, only canine, lol
  • Oh, parvo is just fifths disease. Which isn’t really a big deal: https://www.cdc.gov/parvovirusb19/pregnancy.html
Wonder why they’re even testing for it?
  • Thanks @kiwi2628. I figured you'd have a least some knowledge! I only even know what it is because there was an active case in the kennel we adopted our dog from and he wasn't protected at the time.
  • @tinattt23 @sammierose464 @kiwi2628 apparently they test women who have toddlers because it can be contracted at school and daycare. TW The baby can contract it from the placenta and it can cause serious problems and even lead to miscarriage. So I’ve been obsessing over it because my test was flagged as “H” (aka high) but again, the nurse said I was immune so I was confused by it.
  • 1. I got a filling done last week, I just let my dentist know I was pregnant.
    2. I lost weight in the first trimester in my last pregnancy as well as this one. Too much nausea.
  • Random question for those with toddlers already... going on a beach vacation in a few weeks, and I’m confused about what we should do in terms of diapers on the beach. DS doesn’t have much experience in water yet (just turned 2), so I don’t foresee him really swimming or anything. I was looking into swim diapers, but the reusable ones, which seem to be more well reviewed, don’t do anything for pee, so if we’re just playing in the sand, he would pee right through it. Obviously if we’re going in the water, I’d want a real swim diaper instead of a disposable, but for just playing on the beach, could we just get away with having him in his normal diapers? What have you guys done??
  • @pumpkinpancake We have DS in a regular diaper if he’s out of the water, and then if we take him in, we change him into the swim diaper right before going in.

We did this too, although if we brought him in we usually just did no diaper since it wasn't like we were staying in that long.

@Lisa3379 @hellopartyof5 thanks! That’s kind of what I was imagining doing, since I don’t think we’ll be spending as much time in the water as on the sand. The only other times we’ve been to the beach, DS put his feet in the water and then wanted back out, though in his defense, the water at our pacific NW beaches is pretty cold most of the time.  I’m curious to see if he likes it more at a tropical beach.
  • @pumpkinpancake I recommend the swim diaper if hes going to be playing in the wet/more damp sand too.  When we go I will put DS in a regular diaper if he's sitting under the tent or umbrella in the dry sand after and I know he's not going back in the water.

  • Has anyone else experienced worse lactose intolerance during pregnancy? I've always had a slight intolerance (a little bloated and gassy) so I rarely drank it (cheese didn't seem to bother me as much), but the past couple of months it's given me doubled-over cramps, painful bloating, and diarrhea. And what's worse is I've been craving milk. So yesterday, my husband went to find me lactose-free milk, and I tried it and I didn't have a single cramp or bubble in my gut.
  • @pumpkinpancake disposable swim diapers also don’t hold pee. They are all designed to keep poop out of the pool.

  • @hannaht8516 Yes!  I had an intolerance get way worse while pregnant and has hung around ever since. I’ve been mostly dairy free for almost 5 years now because of it. I find I can have a little if it’s been cooked.
  • @hannaht8516 definitely possible. I've been hiking about how this baby is going to be such a tricky eater because of not just the food aversions but because suddenly I'm way more lactose intolerant than usual. I might be holding a tiny grudge against a tiny fetus over my inability to enjoy ice cream...
  • @mesamyt It's so crazy! I read that for some people it will get better, and for some it will get worse. When I tried that lactose-free milk last night I was shocked and excited. Though I don't know why I'm surprised, I'd just been dealing with it because it wasn't THAT bad before. I'll have to keep going with it and try different things!
  • Another question for today... I feel kind of silly asking it (especially since this isn’t my first pregnancy), but is it ok to get manicures/pedicures during pregnancy? *TW* after two consecutive losses last year, I’m being super cautious about stuff, but would really love to get a pedicure before vacation in a couple weeks. *end TW*. I know there’s a lot of bad chemicals in nail polish, but don’t know how much is absorbed into the nails/skin. My next appt isn’t until next week, so I didn’t really want to wait to ask my dr.
  • @sammierose464 how did you sleep last night?  I drank a lot more water yesterday and ended up sleeping better, even though I had to get up to pee more.  Wonder if that played a part or just a coincidence.

  • @pumpkinpancake I'd say go with whatever makes you comfortable (including calling the doc!) If you're going to be too uncomfortable/nervous to enjoy it, then why bother?
That said, I did mine at home before my last trip because I knew I wasn't going to be able to stand the fumes in the salon and didn't want to be exposed to them for so long. Of course, I screwed up my nails 30 times and probably got high off of remover and polish. #epicfail
If you do go to the salon, make sure there's some good ventilation. I also feel like I'd skip the foot massage for now if you don't think they'd understand the reflexology spots to avoid during pregnancy. There are some articles out there about 'safer' nail polish to use, but I have ZERO clue as to how much science is really behind those.
  • @purplegoldfish2 I slept great last night, but that could be partly due to the fact that I pulled out my u-shaped pregnancy pillow. It's like a nest! Of course dog wanted out at like 1am and then hubby was up at 2:15 again. But I worked from home today so I got to sleep in a little.
  • Called my doc today to ask when the next ultrasound(s) was/were, so H knew when to tell his boss he'd be away from his desk, and the nurse/assistant at the front desk told me I'd likely have another one next week. Three before 12 weeks?
Check, the first one was super early bc I wast tracking behind so maybe the doc doesn't want to count that one, but we got a healthy one around eight weeks, so I'm concerned (also pumped, but more concerned) that she'd want another. Not high risk, has anyone else been scheduled or had a bunch of u/s early?
  • @pumpkinpancake I'm a licensed nail tech and saw plenty of pregnant women in my years in the salon at every stage of pregnancy. Massage around the ankle area needs to be avoided, but your nail tech should know that if she is licensed. I would avoid any sketchy looking nail shop and go for a real spa. There are many places (around here anyway) that are operating against state board regulations. If you smell fumes, leave. Proper ventilation is important and you should never smell chemicals in any salon or spa.

  • @chopchop25 Last time, I had an ultrasound at every appointment until after 14 weeks. She said Doppler is hit and miss until then so she just goes straight to the ultrasound. Doesn’t seem like that’s necessarily standard practice though. Maybe just depends if the office has the equipment easily accessible?
  • @chopchop25 when I was pregnant with DS, I had an ultrasound at basically every prenatal appt, and I wasn’t high risk or anything. My drs office had the machines in their office, so I guess it was just part of their practice to check on the baby by ultrasound each time.
  • I feel silly asking this, but is it safe to sleep on your right side while pregnant? With DS, I could only sleep comfortably on my left side and with this baby I only want to sleep on my right side.

Also, how much would you pay for in home daycare for 2 kids? I have a friend who has offered to watch the 2 kids, but I feel like she's asking too much. How much would you pay?
  • Anyone happen to know the threshold of when to medicate a fever in early pregnancy? I know high or prolonged fevers can cause issues. Just not sure what qualifies as “high”. DS was kind enough to share his cold with mama.
  • @purple_2012 I've read that sleeping on your left side is better for blood flow, but I don't think it really matters side wise. I sleep on both. Also, I know one of the women we are considering charges $3.50/hr for infant and $3/hr for a friend's 6yo. I have no idea if that's normal or not.

I had a fever of 101.3 last night. I called the on-call doctor because I had the same questions as you - 101.3 is a fever, but is it high? - and she said Tylenol was fine.

She didn’t give me threshold numbers, but maybe you can use that as a guideline. I don’t like to medicate too much, but since Tylenol is acceptable in prenancy (just don’t overdo it) and fevers can be dangerous, I feel ok using it to control fevers. For simple headaches? I just live with it.
  • @Lisa3379 Thanks! I was only at 100.1 but I think I’m going to send DH out for some Tylenol just in case it creeps up anymore overnight. Or I’ll be chugging massive amounts of infant Tylenol.  :D Hope you’re on the mend soon!
