@redheadbride15 Have you ever heard of a ‘Jet Kids’ ? They’re a thing I’ve seen lots of people use recently for taking their little ones on flights and might be worth an investment if you do a lot of traveling?
@mrsbubbles-2 in my state the law is 2 years AND 30# to front face, fwiw. Even if that isn’t the law in your state, it’s in line with recommendations. Age matters as well as size due to system/bone maturity.
As as long as they are within the limits of their car seat no reason they can’t ride on in rf. Big or not, they are perfectly comfy and safe.
i turned all 3 around 2.5, for various reasons unrelated to size (carsickness and causing trouble exacerbated by the position).
I will keep DS rearfacing until he reaches the limits of rearfacing in his car seat. Check your manual. The longer they rear face, the safer it is.
This. Even though many say it’s safe at 2 to switch them, their spines are not yet fully developed, and a severe crash could result in internal decapitation. DS is a very tall and somewhat chunky 3 year old and he’s still got a year or so left before we hit the limit in his car seat for RF. He’s never complained about his legs, he just folds them or puts them wherever is comfortable.
I just shared this story yesterday, which again solidified my stance in the longer the better (if you couldn’t tell, I’m very passionate about car seat safety).

@mrsbubbles-2 Check your state’s car seat laws. I know PA just changed theirs recently, so you now have to RF until age 2. Not sure what the laws are in your state.
@livinthesunnylife at least 4, I’d say. He’ll probably reach the height limit first. My seat (Diono Radian RXT) is 45lbs and at 3, DS is 37. We’ve got at the very least, another 6 months. Probably a year though.

They slow down gaining weight pretty substantially around 4 so you probably have a lot longer than you think haha. DS1 just hit 45 pounds at 5 and he's a big kid.
DS is 7yo and just hit 50lbs around his 7th birthday. He’s in a backless booster in my car because he’s something like 4.5 feet tall, and the high back booster got too short for him.

Yeah I have no idea what to expect lol. DS was a 3lb preemie and underweight for his first year. He had a bunch of growth spurts before 2, but from 2-3 was one massive growth spurt and he’s now bigger and taller than all of his full term friends

I need to have my doc check L's growth chart. He is 2.5 ish, and 35lbs. His convertible carseat has the limits of 36inches and 30lbs rear-facing, so he out-grew and and was carsick so he switched at 18 months.
E has already reached the top slot for her restraints RF at 15 months, so if she grows anymore in her torso she will have to be switched.

DS is in the 5% for night and weight so I'm assuming he'll be rearfacing forever.
How far along are you? Size of baby? 17w 3d a pomegranate
Age(s) of other kid(s)? DS is 13m
How are you feeling? Meh, DS and I got another cold but fine other than that. I miss sleep though.
Rants/Raves? While DH was gone for the funeral he surprised my by having soup delivered to our house because I was sick and he wanted to take care of me. It was super sweet.
Questions? Nope
GTKY: What is something you said before you became a parent that you’d never do as a parent but now you actually do do?? I tired to be pretty flexible because I knew going into this that being a parent would be a lot of work. DS gets more screen time then I would like but that's pretty much it.
We have stuck to our guns about not giving him junk food, but my DH is a great cook so that makes it easier.
@mrsbubbles-2 The official recommendation from the American Academy of Pediatrics is rear-facing until at least 2. After that, check the height and weight restrictions on your seat and keep them rear-facing for as long as you can. (Feel free to educate your pediatrician on that!)
Also, I'm intrigued by your activity book suggestion! DS is definitely a book kid (has NO interest in TV/movies/tablets). Can I ask where you find these things? I have no idea!

But there's also laws for each state that mandate 2 years old AND 30 pounds so it's also worth looking into what the laws are for your state.
My oldest is almost 7 and is the big side of average (like 55% ish) and I expect at his pedi next month he’ll be about 50. But I can’t imagine he’d fit height wise!! He’s about outgrown his radian by seated height (still 5pt setting). Once we get a minivan I’ll switch him to a hbb but for now I have 3-across and don’t want to mess with that puzzle lol
@redheadbride15 - our favorites right now are Noisy Farm, Polar bear polar bear what do you hear, brown bear brown bear what do you see (the slide panel version) and never touch a monster.
@livinthesunnylife They are. We got them through a grant that our WIC office put together. They came with 6 weeks worth of classes/training on carseats in general, but my kids have or are terribly close to maxing out their limits.

How are you feeling? Better than I have been feeling! Still on nausea meds and I've had a dull headache for two days.
Rants/Raves? I'm feeling so much better - it's like a switch flipped a day or two after hitting 16 weeks which is totally great! But I'm afraid I might be over doing it now that I feel "free". We spent 3 hours at the park today and I took my girls to some places we haven't been since I started feeling sick. I have this nervous anticipation that it's all going to come flooding back (I was sick the whole pregnancy with the first two, though I do remember at some point it let up a bit, just like this time).
Questions?
GTKY: What is something you said before you became a parent that you’d never do as a parent but now you actually do do?? Probably a lot more than I remember. I never planned to have a kid in the bed ever. Pretty much stuck with that with my first (partially because the one time I tried when she was sick and I wanted her close by, she got up and crawled around and basically wouldn't sleep - total fail). But my second was such a snuggler - and still is! She's always started in her bed, but would join us at some point in the night. At first I did it because I just wanted more sleep and she went back to sleep so much faster if she was close to me, but then it kind of stuck. She's 2 1/2 now and still comes in most nights, but it's usually only an hour or two before wake up time (and she goes back to sleep rather than having an early wake up so I don't mind at all!). Sometimes she never comes in and I have to admit, that makes me a little sad. She's going to freak out when my belly is too big and there's no room for her anymore...just waiting to cross that bridge. Also said no pacifier, but my first really needed it and it didn't complicate anything and she gave it up so easy when it was time. So then I praised the miracle of the paci and offered it to my second without reservations. She hated it. Never took one so we did without. It's probably why I let her come lay with us in bed, actually, since there wasn't anything else I could give her to soothe her.
DD1 was 30lbs at her 2 year check up and that's when we flipped her. She absolutely hated being rear facing and would scream nonstop on car rides. 95% of the time she is in the car it is for a trip of less than 2 miles, to daycare or the grocery store or the park, so we figured our sanity was more important than keeping her rear facing. The chances of us being in an accident on such a short trip are pretty slim and her screaming would stress us out so much that I feel like the quality of our driving suffered when she was rear facing.
I'm about to buy a minivan though, so PLENTY of room, and DD2 will stay rear facing until at least 2.5 assuming she continues to tolerate it. DD1 hated the car from the beginning but DD2 is cool with it now so she will hopefully continue to be that way.
We turned DS around at 2.5. I sometimes freak about it when I read an article and want to turn him back to rear facing. I’m pretty sure he’s throw a fit at this point though.
Thanks for all the car seat info, everyone! Missouri's child seat laws are woefully unhelpful - kids under 4 must be in an approved seat blah blah blah... (https://csftl.org/state-laws/) Defaulting to the AAP recommendation (thanks @redheadbride15!) and our manual
This all prompted me to double check the weight/height limits of our car seats (we have a graco and a britax). DS will be good until he weighs 40 lbs so I intend to keep him in it as long as possible. He is about 30 lbs right now and I have no idea when he will hit 40, but until then rear facing it is! Luckily he doesn't mind!
@scottishlass1213 I found the ring sling very easy. And sorry I am just now replying. I didn't get the notification. Sometimes I do, sometimes I don't!
His three plus my one; we are all excited to welcome a little one!
@homequiltingmama welcome! I read your intro, glad you decided not to lurk and take the leap this time! BMBs are irreplaceable. Who else is up to talk to at 3am when you're up with the newborn? Hope you enjoy it here!
