Re: Names?!?

  • I love the way Reina Grace sounds!! @comealongponds

  • I love Reina AND Eloise. What is Reina from? Makes me think of Agents of Shield, lol.
  • I have to be honest, I strongly dislike Reina and the rest of the similar names like King, Queen, Reign, Royal. It screams uneducated Kardashian wanna be to me. Sorry for the harsh response but please consider this when naming a child who will be stuck with the name you pick.

  • We are having the HARDEST time with names. I need your opinions on the names we don't hate (saying this because we don't LOVE any of them):

    -Adele
    -Quinn
    -Willa
    -Micah
-Blair (husband hates though but I refuse to take it off the list)
-Molly (husband also dislikes but I'm not taking this one off either)
    -Piper
    -Noelle
-Olive (favorite name of all of these but my DS' middle name is Oliver so it kind of weirds me out)
    -Wren
    -Ty (named after my husband)
    -Dylan

  • @SmashJam I honestly can’t remember who came up with it, but I don’t think we got it “from” anything in particular!

@runsomewhere I honestly didn’t even think of it like that, and I’ve gone back and forth on the spelling. Do you think Raina is better? Honestly it’s at the bottom of the list for me and I much prefer the other three names so I’ll probably push for those.

  • @comealongponds honestly, your other 3 choices are so good so I'd just scratch Reina or Raina off the list. Reina is literally the word for queen in Spanish and Raina would get misspelled and isn't really a solid name.  Alice and Lucy are my faves from your lost.

  • @foxbaby2016 Putting names together here from your list:

    1. Quinn
    2. Noelle
    3. piper
    4. Wren
    5. Willa

  • @comealongponds I like Eloise, Lucy, and Reina.  Have you considered Rayna? I think that's how the character on Nashville spelled it (never watched the show, but know someone else who named their daughter with that spelling).  That would get away from some of the royalty associations.  It looks like Rayna is of Hebrew origin and means "song of the lord", according to Nameberry.

@foxbaby2016 Quinn is my favorite on your list!  Love it.
  • Opinions, please! :)

    Vera
    Isla
Eleanor (Elle or Nora for NN)  -- or maybe just Elle as a whole name?  Maybe that's not complete enough.
    Vivienne

  • @js8812 I love Vivienne and I like Isla a lot. Eleanor is a good solid name but it has become so trendy recently and it's still slightly old lady in my book.

  • I have a weird nick name thing. If you’re going to call your kid by a nickname for it’s whole life then you might as well just name them thcan nickname. I love the name Nora! I don’t think it’s a “nicknamey” name.
  • @hillbillywife I love a nickname OPTION in a name, so I usually like going with the full name so I have the option of good nicknames. But with Bernard being our name pic for baby boy, I know we will always call him Bernie, so I told DH we should just name him Bernie straight out and he's kind of against it. We will literally never call him Bernard unless we were mad at him so I don't know why he is being so odd about it.

I apply the "business card" test to names.  Sometimes if a name doesn't sound professional enough I prefer the formal name as an option.

My son is Maxwell and we call him Max 90% of the time and just about everyone else exclusively calls him Max.  In my opinion, he needed something more professional for when he is a renowned physician, lawyer, etc. ;);)

I agree that Nora isn't too nicknamey.  I'm not against it, but wish it wasn't quite as popular as it is.
  • My husband is upset we aren't finding out the gender of #3 (I never wanted to know with #1 or #2) and apparently you HAVE to known the gender to discuss names at all... :o He's also upset he doesn't get exclusive naming rights. So the kids and I have taken to calling the baby Megazord.

  • @js8812 that’s a good point. I guess it would depend on the name for me. But also I actively choose names without nicknames. I’m digging myself a hole here lol.

I guess what I’m trying to say is if you only like the name for the nickname then you’re better off going by just the nickname (if it’s appropriate for a name).

@SmashJam is it a family name? I think my husband only has an opinion when I have definite feeling about things lol. When I WANT his opinion he doesn’t have anything to give me lol.

I'm biased... Vivienne is awesome, my name is Viviana :) love Isla too, and Eleanor, though as @runsomewhere says it's pretty popular now.

Noelle, Olive , and Willa would be my picks. I don't like Quinn tbh, Wren is a little strange to spell and Dylan is too much of a guy name - at least for me:)
  • We have a top 4! Our twin boys are Donovan and Marshall. Little sister is going to be:

    Eloise Cordelia (or Grace)
    Alice Cordelia
    Lucy Cordelia
    Reina Grace

I’m pushing for Eloise Cordelia (called Ellie or Lou) and I think DH is leaning towards Reina Grace.
Eloise Cordelia is my fave. I don't think Reina poses such a big issue, for one it is Spanish and even though it is a common language in the US I might use the Polynesian name for "queen" and no one would know. I do like the Rayna spelling too:)

If it helps, I’m in the great white north, so Spanish isn’t a huge language here, French is instead! So maybe the association would be even less up here.

@js8812 I do that with names too. I prefer longer names, with the potential for a nickname, I don’t like the idea of giving something “nicknamey” as a given name. I named both my boys with nicknames in mind and we only ever call them by their full names so there’s that too lol

  • @kissableviv that’s totally gives me more insight into your screen name lol. I was reading it “kiss a bleviv” lol
  • @comealongponds I love the name Reina! Never heard of it before. And I for one definitely didn’t know it meant anything in Spanish lol.

@foxybaby from your list I like Blair and Noelle the best! Really unheard of these days.

  • @comealongponds Reyna is a character in the Percy Jackson books too, demi goddess born to a Roman god I think so still means queen I would guess.

@hillbillywife it's not a family name it's actually after Bernie Sanders! So is opposition to a straight Bernie is even weirder.
  • That’s pretty awesome @SmashJam. Whatever you end up doing will be perfect!
  • @comealongponds I personally love the name Reina. I think it's beautiful. I would consider spelling it Raina instead though.
  • @js8812 from your list, I love Vera. Im
thinking Hazel if I have a girl. There are a handful of little old lady names that are totally coming back and I love both of these.

@comealongponds I prefer Eloise Grace from your list

@foxbaby2016 from your list I am partial to Olive and Molly, the trendier names are just NMS

@js8812 Isla stands out to me from your list, Vivienne is a close second
  • @foxbaby2016 I love the name Wren!  It was on my list but DH doesn't like it.  I also like Quinn, Noelle, and Willa from your list.

@js8812 I don't love Eleanor but I love Elle or Nora.  I think they both stand well on their own and don't sound nickname-y.  I do think of Ellie as a nickname though.

  • Tentatively agreed on Fiona Ann for our little girl! Wasn’t even on our not so short list until a friend suggested it last week.
I’m not in love with the middle name but we wanted to use one of our mothers names/middle name since DS has DH’s middle name. We could use the full name-Annette or DH’s mother’s name Jeanie(probably do Jean for middle name sake). Also pretty sure I spelled my MILs name wrong
  • @acunamatada Fiona is super cute! You could do Fiona Jeanette and incorporate both names so no one is offended (when we were considering family names I worried about that).

We’re starting over because DH decided he doesn’t like Eloise, and I told him Raina was my least favourite of our four. So I rebuilt our list and we are starting over (oh boy).

  • @comealongponds I would totally do Jeanette but I have a cousin Jeanette who’s suggested her name for the baby since we found out the sex, I wouldn’t want to give her that satisfaction lol.
  • DH is now obsessed with Milo. I love it so much but I am afraid it will be weird in italian. My mom already thought it was weird...I'm just growing to love it so much! It's my kid after all, so I shouldn't care.
Sebastian is also back in the game and Oliver is still going strong.
  • I LOVE Milo....
  • @kissableviv so cute! I love the name Mateo but I feel like it would be weird for us because there isn’t a drop of Spanish blood in either of us lol.
  • @SmashJam - I'm with your husband on this one.  I think Bernard would look better on a resume or business card, even if he never formally goes by it.  Another thing to think about - my dad's name is James but goes by Jim and my DH goes by his middle name.  Both know immediately when they're getting sales calls because they get asked by their first/formal name.  :)

We have barely discussed names at all.  DH picked out Aaron Robert during my first pregnancy and still likes it. I'm not against either name for the middle name, but don't like either for the first name (Aaron is his brother's name and Robert is a family name on his mom's side).
  • Milo has always been one of my favorite boy names
  • @acunamatada ahahaha fair enough!

  • @kissableviv Milo is a great name, love it! As for your mom thinking it's weird, I'm sure it will grow on her once he's in her arms.

  • @MichelleAG05 I love the name Aaron and really wanted to name DS that.

    Isabella & Julian & and now #3!
  • Well I rebuilt our list and let DH cut it down yet again (withough Raina or Eloise). He cut it down to about six pretty easy, then together we got it down to two: Summer or Iris. He’s leaning towards Summer, and I’m completely torn. Middle name will be Cordelia.
