Re: Names?!?

  • @comealongponds I vote Iris but both are fine. What happened to Lucy and Alice??

  • @comealongponds I vote iris! So pretty!
  • I vote Iris because to me it sounds better with Cordelia! What's the initial of your last name if I may ask?
  • @runsomewhere they were on the short list, but Alice we decided is too close to DHs name (Allan) and Lucy I worried about the teasing potential (Loose/Luce), plus popularity-wise they were both much more popular than we like (the boys names are in the 200-300 range which we like) so they got cut.

@comealongponds I like both Summer and Iris but I think Iris goes with Cordelia a little better!

@kissableviv I love Milo! Such a cute name. Sebastian will always make me think of the crab from Little Mermaid (not a bad thing though!)

@acunamatada I love Fiona Ann! Sounds like a strong name.

We are now team pink and I was all set with Nova Ann but DH doesn't like it. *Womp, womp*.

Here are the new names on our short list, more than likely with the middle name Ann. I like that these have 2 syllables (DD and DS both have 2 syllable names, our last name is 5 syllables starting with D)

    Nova
    Jemma
    Cadence
    Callie/Kali
    Hattie/Haddie
    Brienne
    Sydney
    Riley

  • @zg49 Our friends just had a little girl last week and named her Hadley and they are calling her Haddie!  I also LOVE Nova but DH does not...
  • @zg49 nova literally means "doesn't go" in Spanish. It was also an 80s Chevy model. So I'm with your H on that one. I feel weird about harping on a second name with a direct Spanish translation but it's just weird to me. I'm not even a native speaker, and maybe it's because I live in California but I can't help my knee jerk reaction of "omg do not name your kid that."

I absolutely love the names Sydney and Riley.

@runsomewhere :o it does?? DH took Spanish in high school so maybe that is why he isn't liking it subconsciously. Thank you for pointing that out! I was liking it for the space definition of an event of a sudden new star since this was a surprise baby, but that is an obscure thought and most people will probably think of the Spanish translation.

  • Nova is my favorite!!! It didn't sound good with our last name and we're having a boy. I'll always associate it way more worth science...doesn't go I. Spanish is No Va, I feel like I wouldn't make that association, at least not immediately. My hubby works at a video game company and Nova is the name of one of the characters so we feel like it would have been associated to that in our case!
  • zg49zg49 member
@kissableviv Does your hubby work for Blizzard?? My DH is a huge gamer so I thought Nova would work for him too for that reason! He's being such a pain LOL

I agree but the first thing I thought of was being at the playground with your kid going "Nova, Nova, lets go, time to go home" which cracked me up.

@comealongponds I’m so jealous your H agreed with Iris! I tried to name our first daughter iris and now this one but that was a no from him  :( Summer is so pretty too!

@zg49 I especially love Brienne from your list! Nova is really pretty and again, I for one would never associate with it meaning anything in Spanish. I feel like as long as the name doesn’t mean anything disgusting then who cares!
  • @acunamatada, you could also try Anjanette. But it might end up more of a mouthful with Fiona.

Hehe thanks but my first thought went to those little Italian cookies. I just can’t  :D
  • I didn’t know they were cookies. I just thought of it because my cousin has that name and I thought it might be an ok compromise.
  • @zg49 I would also first associate Nova with space. And then I remember a professor I had in college who was British and he always pronounced the word like Nov-er haha. I still like the name. I wouldn't use it in our case because I am avoiding names that end in "ah".

    Isabella & Julian & and now #3!
  • @angleyeskkhr yeah it’s spelled differently.. anginette I think? But that’s totally where my mind went lol. I’m okay with picking one or the other, DH is leaning towards Ann after my mother because she’s helped us so much with DS already but I like Jean as a middle with our last name.
  • zg49zg49 member
@kissableviv Very cool!! My DH is jealous haha

  • We told my mom and step-dad the name we're most likely going with(after we kinda danced around telling them because we weren't sure we wanted to share yet and we said a few names jokingly) then we said her real name, Claire, and my step-dad laughed in my face! Not sure if he thought we were still joking around (the other names we were joking with were feminine plays off his name) but it really sucked. And now I know why people don't share the names they picked until baby is born.

  • That really sucks @rachelsogo! We picked our boys names at like 18 weeks and kept them secret til birth because I was worried people might make comments. I hope he apologizes.

  • @rachelsogo I love the name Claire! It was on our short list.
We told our families the name we picked but told them it could change. Then we told DH’s sister the other names we were considering and she was like “I like those better”. And I just thought we shouldn’t have said anything. Bc now her opinion is influencing what we might pick.
  • It's just so annoying that everyone has to have their opinion. Like they want to be apart of the naming process or something. No, just keep your opinions to yourselves and just talk about it behind my back if you don't like it..lol My mom texted me today and pretty much apologized for him. He's a turd and says things a lot without thinking.

  • @rachelsogo it was also on our list for a girl, it's so classic and sweet! We have shared some options with our families but once we decide, we will be keeping it a secret until birth.

@rachelsogo ugh! I know! I got so mad at people's responses I STOPPED sharing our potential picks! I was so angry and shocked to hear twice from two different people on two different names that they knew "sluts" with a particular name!! Now since myhusband and I decided on Gianna, we started to share by saying, "Her name is Gianna" the reponses have been positive.  I don't know if that's truly because everyone loves it or if people feel less inclined to insult a name that seems like it already belongs to our baby.
  • @rachelsogo we were considering not telling anyone until the birth for this reason! Everyone has an opinion, and it’s like they don’t know how to keep their mouth shut if they don’t have something nice to say.
Im a little bit rebellious in that when someone says they don’t like the name for a ridiculous reason, it makes me want to name LO that even more lol.
  • I chose not to share my  DD’s name ahead of time. It took us for. ever. to pick her name and I knew I couldn’t handle opinions about her name. I haven’t decided if I’ll share the name this time or not. We don’t have one yet anyways so I guess it doesn’t matter yet lol
  • @rachelsogo when I was pregnant with my son, our front runner for a long time was Felix. I will never ever forget when we told my mom we were considering it, and she literally laughed out loud like it was a joke or the most ridiculous name she had ever heard. I was so mad. Then my husband's mom caught word of it and made fun of it to our faces (at least my mom's was an accident, my MIL is just a piece of work). After that we stopped discussing names, but ended up not using Felix, and that is part of the reason why. This time, I am pretty sure we're naming him Owen, but we are not sharing that with anyone. I don't want to hear anyone's opinion. Sorry that happened to you too!v
  • @rachelsogo and @zande2016 that's terrible for both of you! I would have liked to hear that zande still used Felix despite the negative feedback. Don't let the naysayers keep you down!
I have been telling people the names we think of and if we firmly decide on one of these names, I'm not letting other people convince me not to use it. But...I can be a bit of a rebel, so that may be part of it!

    Isabella & Julian & and now #3!
  • Found out last Saturday that I'm having a girl! I've actually had her name picked out for years, but wasn't going to announce it until the birth because I have friends who are pregnant and didn't want anyone to steal the name and I wanted to avoid negative feedback. I was so excited when I found out I was having a girl, that I just blurted it out lol. Her name is Everlyn Rose.
  • @zg49

Yes to Haddie/Hattie! It's different but familiar.
  • My grandmother's name was Hattie Mae.... I am not a fan of the older names, but I have always loved the way that name sounds when you say it out loud

    I finally have name choices!

my favorite right now is probably Sawyer

    others are:
    Easton
    Grayson
    Logan
    Reid

middle name will probably be Thomas after my stepdad.

My concerns currently are that my DS has a name ending in -er and I’m weird about names sounding too similar. Logan is like the 3rd most popular boy name right now so that bumps it down the list for me too.
  • @hillbillywife I like all your choices especially Easton, Grayson and Logan. Easton was one of my top picks for a boy name actually.  I like Sawyer but I keep hearing it used for girls not boys so that turns me off from using it for a boy a bit.

@moguippy Reid was my “boy” name for when my daughter was born. Usually I move past those names because that was “her” name but my H brought it up again.

@runsomewhere meh. My daughter’s name is a surname and is pretty unisex too. Although the only person I know named sawyer right now is a little boy, so I def think that can sway you either way.

Edit: take that back. I know a girl dog named sawyer too lol.  :D
