I think I'm changing my choice for girl name. I was going with Josephine (for my grandpa), but have really started to love Elsie (for my grandmother's aunt). It would be Elsie Grace. However, my husband's girl choice is Emma Marie, so we might be getting into matchy territory here, if it is two girls. @elsie42 What are your thoughts??
@amphibious22 if you would decide to have another baby after this, would you feel you have to pick a J name now that you 3 all have J names? That's where we're at and we're so stumped! we didn't pick DS' name because the letter matched ours, it just worked out that way. But now we feel this obligation to pick another name that matches and everyone keeps saying we haaave to. ugh!

@catlady1215 I actually feel the opposite. I think for kid #2 we want to try to pick a non J name just because then it feels too intentional. Ironically one of our top two girl names was also a J name, so maybe we'll be a J family anyways, but don't feel obligated. If you love a name of the same letter, I wouldn't let that stop you from using it, but if you can't come up with one to match, then don't stress about it.

@krashke When I read your post I was thinking you were trying to intentionally pick D names hence why I even brought it up. I don't know that I'd normally notice 2 kids having the same first letter. I actually didn't think about it but one of my short list names for this coming baby girl is a J name but we already have a J and an A. I think it's more the intentionality of picking a name to match that is not my style. I feel the same way about coordinated outfits. It's too matchy matchy/ neat and tidy for me.
But if my kids happen to match it's not a big deal. I also think the matching letters is more noticeable in families with 3 + kids.
@sabby2 - Just throwing out some other older/classic boy names for you. I love Hazel (DH was not on board with it, but we've only had boys so it didn't matter)

Can I get name spelling help? DH and I are set on the name Jonathan. I want to use this spelling and he wants to use Johnathan. His reasoning is that if it gets shortened to John, he wants it to be that way and not Jon. Idk what he has against it spelled Jon but I really think it should be spelled without the H.

@profmcgonagall I agree with you - I don't think I've ever seen Johnathan before so I prefer Jonathan with Jon. If he likes John I would consider it as a stand alone name.
What she said Definitely Jonathan - the other way looks made up to me. I guess its kind of weird to add the H for the nn John but I think its pretty common to do that. No weirder than Bill for William or Dick for Richard (unless there are reasons those nicknames came about that I don't know about).
@ProfessorMcGonagall DH and DS are Jonathans. Neither DH nor his mother ever asked anyone to call him Jon, but everyone does. We tried calling DS by his middle name for a little while (Henry,) but I decided pretty quickly he is a Jonathan and I make it a point to correct those who call him anything other than Jonathan.
@profmcgonagall I don't know if this is a sign, but I saw some person named Johnathan comment on a random FB post yesterday about female body hair and our social expectations - this guy mentions something about a machete and "muff diving" (his words, not mine) and I thought, "Huh, I think that's the first time I've seen a Johnathan spelled that way; funny that someone mentioned that spelling on my BMB" - and also, wtf?
Thanks ladies! I’m pretty sure I’m going to win the spelling battle since I’m not planning on calling him by a NN anyway. But DH is definitely not going to be filling out the birth certificate form unsupervised.

My DH isn't allowed either. If he had his way our baby boy would be called Spike!
@profmcgonagall and @Lolalipsy +1 on DH not being allowed to fill out any paperwork unsupervised. He's been asking for a Fozzy Bear "our last name" since before we were married. I agreed our 4th son could be named Fozzy Bear- pretty sure I'm done after this one.
We are also having major nickname issues. We are both nickname people too- so I'm not going to pretend that we won't nickname our son. The names we like just don't have any nickname or good nicknames. I'm open to any nickname suggestions for any of these names you can think of... boy needs a name and we are so helplessly stuck.
1) Killian- We both hate Killy, Killer, ect. 2) Declan- I like Dex but DH doesn't seem to like it.
Other names we are considering: 1) Finnegan- Finn/ Finny 2) Jameson- Jay, Jamie 3) Patrick (but this will likely be moved the the middle name of whatever name we pick)
@pupsicle23 Avery Ruth is adorable. To me it's a combo of a newer name (for a girl) + a kind of overlooked classic, and it really has a nice ring to it.
The only husband-approved names on my list are still Laura and Odile. I think I'd prefer Odile as the primary name since Laura is in use in the family already. Laura Odile sounds good to me, but Odile Laura just sounds wrong somehow. Maybe the l's run together.
I am also liking the name Faye lately. There's a cutie at daycare named Faye Lou so probably won't use it, but I like the simplicity and the fairy vibe. I'll have to run it by my partner.
MH is digging Matilda. I think it's a sweet name, but it just always makes me think of a little girl - like maybe it's a name that doesn't age well as they grow. Maybe I associate it too strongly with the book/film??
@silvergreen DH is mildly obsessed with the movie. My SIL had Matilda as a top contender, but her husband didn't like the middle name she had with it (Jane,) and she had a friend who named her baby that, so she went with something different (Annabel.) I also have a friend who named his daughter Matilda, and I believe they call her Tillie, which I think is cute. You can always opt for a more "adult-sounding" name as a middle or first, that way she can choose what to go by when she gets older.
Our DD name Margaret we chose because she can be: Maggie, Peggy, Margory, Meg, Greta or Daisy - all common nicknames. Weirdly enough, she is Margaret.
We are considering for baby boy Henry Everett Palmer Philip George Oscar Frederick Charles
Mama to a wonderful DD - Sep 2015, Wife to my DH since 2011, 2 dogs, a cat, and hoping to add No. 2 in May/June 2018. @rnielsen321 That article was so interesting! Nancy is "short" for Ann? Learn something new everyday! And I vote for Henry
@sabby2 I like your taste! I really like all those name, but especially love Elliot (was my choice if this was a boy!) and Ezra
I *think* we may have decided on Emilia (Emmy) Rae for this little babe. For DH and I, girl names were way harder than boys! In the last month, she's been Savannah, Adeline, Ella, Delaney, Fiona, Sophie, Quinn...and more. I feel like Emilia is sticking...but I'll let you guys know when I change my mind next week
@katelynrae86 thanks! Ezra and Elliot are my top faves at this point.
Love your girl names too! Girl names were much easier for dh and I for some reason. We had even mostly agreed on a girl name (Vera) before we found out this baby is a boy.
@sabby2 My brother is an Elliott and I love the name. He always got lots of compliments on it growing up.
@silvergreen Matilda is beautiful. I can see what you mean about the book character, but the name has so much more history than just that one thing. Plus Matilda in the book is definitely an admirable kind of person. Also now I'm humming that alt-j song..."this is for Matilda..."
@LaceyBee522 if you end up with boy girl twins are you going to name the boy Philip? Lol lol DH dreams of us having boy girl twins one day so he can name them Phil and Lil from rugrats (I like the name but do not support the rugrats dreams of my husband)

Not sure on the others. You can always do initials, with P as a middle name (KP, JP, DP, GP, JP). Admittedly some of those are a bit awkward.
I do know a Finley (sp?)
@sabby2 Now I'm curious - what's your DD's name?

Probably wouldn't combine Laura + Elnora, though. My favorite is Odile but that's the one my partner is least excited about.

"Michelle" by The Beatles {lovely song}
"My Michelle" by GnR {heard it recently .... torn}
Which is better than song related to my name .... "K-K-K-Katie" - do I need to go on, or does everyone know this one? lol
