Re: Weekly Randoms 1/29

  • DS's daycare is closed due to stomach flu, and DH is traveling for work this week, so I have to use my precious sick time to stay home with DS. I LOVE our in-home daycare provider, but she has 5 kids of her own, so she ends up closing due to sickness in the house at least twice per year. I was really hoping to save my sick time, but after today, I'll have already used almost half of it, and it's not even February.. :(
On another note, I think I'm going to go get unisom+b6 today. This nausea is getting out of control. I'm 12 weeks today, was hoping it would pass by now.

@mrsbubbles-2 agree. I also tried to find her on FB but nothing. Lol.

Eta @lakesideknitter I’m sorry you haven’t to use sick time and the nausea is bad. Fingers crossed your day care fam feels better soon so you can get back to work!
  •  @lakesideknitter the daycare closing situation is SO hard. I live in the south and a bunch of daycares close when the county closes schools (for weather and such). Anyhow, we had 1.7 inches of snow two weeks ago and the county closed schools for THREE AND A HALF DAYS. Seriously. Every parent I know was losing their mind. I have since heard our county builds in 15 bad weather days into their schedule. And so many of the daycares close in accordance with the county schools. We have a nanny right now, but I am so scared for when we switch to daycare because it really throws a wrench into everything when they close!

  • That was one of the downsides to in-home daycares for us when we were researching.  We love the idea of more one-on-one time and smaller class sizes but we didn't like the idea that personal issues/illness could cause unexpected closures.

Ever have those days where you wake up, you're beyond tired, and the idea of having to make it through the day seems impossible? I am dragging ass right now and bedtime seems so far away.

  • Thanks everyone. I'm actually kind of thankful for the extra day home with DS. He's a total daddy's boy, so I don't get him to myself very often. DH would usually be the one to stay home, because his schedule is more flexible, just figures that this would happen while he's traveling..
@mrsbubbles-2 she plans to be open BAU tomorrow, fingers crossed!

  • +1 on the exhaustion today. I'm not sure how I'm going to make it through the day without falling asleep at my desk. To make matters worse, this is my slow time of year so I don't even have much to keep me engaged right now.

I’ve had a great break this morning. My Dad retired in January and invited the boys and me over for homemade breakfast this morning. I was feeling nauseous when I woke up, but pancakes and sausage helped...

bonus: my nephews are here, too, and the boys have been entertained while I sit on my butt.

  • We have an in home daycare and DS has been there for two whole years now, since he was 3mo old. She has 4 of her own and has never once closed for sickness. It’s kind of a miracle really. She’s requested days so she can go to field trips and stuff but I know well in advance and am able to coordinate other care. I’m freaking out over the cost of having two in there though. Sooooo much money.

  • @hardlyhannah we're staring down the barrel of having 3 in daycare at the same time for 20 months.  It is brutal.  And when I complain about it, DH is like "you know, they'll all be in college at the same time too."  Terrible.  I'm going to have to work until I'm 100.

Fortunately we live a bit in the sticks, and down south, so it's cheap by comparison to a lot of folks, but it still hurts.
  • I'm really sad I missed the troll this weekend. I miss all the good stuff! We saw Paddington 2 which was amazing and spent the day at the beach yesterday then ended the night in urgent care as I suspect DS2 has the flu. Waiting on the phone call with the swab results this morning but his temp is still pretty high so I'd be shocked if it was anything else. FX it's just a pesky non-flu virus though!

  • DH refuses to consider an in-home daycare. In his defense, most of the ones in our neighborhood look a little sketchy.

Fortunately a good friend of mine (we work for the same Afterschool program in the same building) is part owner of a free-standing daycare a few blocks from our school. She's putting her son in when he's a few months old (she's due in April), and when they open reservations for next January she's saving me a spot for my baby. It will be really nice, since not only will she give us a discount, I'll be able to walk over to nurse on my lunch. And since my mom works in the same building as me, she can go visit the baby too.

Thanks! It's been mostly in the high 102s with peaks in the high 103s last night. I haven't been giving him any ibuprofen or tylenol because I like to let it do it's job with the infection. I'm also debating even if it is the flu do I give the tamiflu? The pediatrician said it only really shortens the flu by one day and will most likely cause vomiting. Adding vomiting when it's not there already for one less day of illness doesn't seem to make much sense to me.

  • @calimom2524 ugh, hugs and I hope it passes quickly. FWIW, we didn't do tamiflu when DS had it either - just tylenol and lots of juice and snuggles. He wasn't vomiting so I didn't want to have to worry about adding that to the already super fun flu symptoms. This season sucks, can it be spring already?!?

  • I don't really log in on the weekends.  I missed a troll?  Here I go troll hunting.....
  • Well, I’m home with a sick DS today. He had just fully gotten over croup and a cough crept back in over the weekend. He had a mild temp yesterday, too, but was in good spirits, ate normal. This morning he was up at 5am becausenof a coughing fit and his temp was 101.8. He goes back and forth from being miserable to smiling. He only napped about an hour, so I think he’s alsonjust exhausted from lack of sleep. We are going to the pediatrician at 5 just to rule out flu or anything else. I’m so over this crap!!

  • @juliebird6 Me too! I have been checking in but, I don't have anything to really say either. Plus I am actually trying to do all the work I didn't do last week.

  • I’m so over in home daycare. My provider focuses on the youngest two (one is her first grandson) and the rest are pretty much on their own (minus having immediate needs met). DS is the third youngest (20 months) and the provider can’t tell me a single thing about DS’ day on a routine basis. The best I’ve heard is that he just watches the big kids all day. We’re moving him to a preschool program next year.

LO will also do in home daycare to start but I’ll be counting down until both are in preschool.

As a side note, child care is crazy expensive! Between in home daycare, preschool, and summer school for DS (preschool follows school year calendar) we’re looking at around $20-22K per year. If we did a daycare center, we’d be closer to 32-35K! My work schedule will stink (6 am- 3 pm) to accommodate the preschool hours, but it’s the most affordable way to get DS into a quality preschool program.
  • +1 for inhome daycare. It has never closed other than for snow days! I love it so much! But I’d rather be home all day with DS

hope all the sick LOs are feeling better soon! Nothing worse than a sick child, big hugs!!

@jsnakehole fingers and toes crossed for your DH!

that sucks @proudparent2b is there only one person working there?

  • I booked my newborn photographer this weekend. She takes 4 newborns a month. And I was already number 3 for August. I thought I was early. Lol. I’ve been researching for months. So many “faux-togs” out there. I’m very particular. This was probably my number one item I wanted no expense spared on. So excited.
  • @dirtanddiamonds Wow, I'm surprised she only takes 4 per month?  I don't think I've ever heard of newborn photographer limiting themselves that much?
  • @dirtanddiamonds so exciting!! DH nearly fell off the couch when I reminded him of the prices people usually pay around here. With DS we used a young and upcoming photographer and she was really well priced and the pics were nice just not that spectacular. Definitely want to go a little fancier this time since DS will be in the pics to and maybe DH and myself too!

My last one (2013) was similar. And I booked about this time and was one of the first. Since they can’t really be scheduled until birth, I can understand why the limit. This photographer does all sorts of photos. Seniors, children, families and whatnot. And a newborn can take the good part of a day. So, I think it makes sense.
  • One of the things I'm most sad about living here now instead of where I was when I had both boys is I had the same photographer from when DS1 was 6 months old up until last year when he was 5. She's taken all of our photos from milestones, DS2s pregnancy then newborn photos, and everything in between. I was her longest standing client so she always gave me a good deal. Now I have to start all over with someone out here! They can be so pricey but totally worth it.

  • With DS I had scheduled the photographer but forgot to get in touch when he was born.  The day after we got home from the hospital I sent her an email and said, we're home come over whenever.  She came the next morning and spent 4 hours getting him perfectly posed with all the little props.  Bless those newborn photographers- that is some hard work!

I will have DS be in them with the baby this time, but I'm not torturing myself again.  I hate all those pictures of myself.  I still had so much fluid retention from the IVs and I felt miserable.
  • @calimom2524  being military I understand your problem so much. I would find one. And then a couple years later have to start over. And it’s no easy task. There are still so many people who think they own a camera. So. They are photographers. That’s not how it works. LOL!
  • @dirtanddiamonds I have been waiting for that! It feels so good to see that.
  • @calimom2524 when DS got the flu in December, we got the tamiflu and gave him like 2 doses but he just kept spitting it out and was better, so we gave up. Then, he got the other strand last week, we gave tamiflu and it didn’t make him sick but he wasn’t eating much. It made me so sick though. I stopped taking it the day after his fever broke and I honestly forgot to give him his last two doses, which I know is totally irresponsible and you should finish out meds, but oh well. I don’t think it helped him much this time, honestly. I would probably skip it next time.

Thank you! Between you and @mrsbubbles-2 I think I'm convinced I'm not going to worry about tamiflu. I also asked my bestie who is a nurse and she said if he's feeling relatively ok-ish then the tamiflu will probably make him feel worse and it's expensive and not really proven to be that much of a help. I'm still waiting on a call back from the pediatrician, my biggest pet peeve with this office!

  • I feel like a total Millennial mom failure. I have no concept of social media announcements, and it didn't even occur to me to hire a photographer to do baby pictures. I have a couple of photog friends, so hopefully I can get one of them to take pictures for me. Not sure if they do infants, though.

You are SO not a failure. I have plenty of mom friends who don't do this! As of right now I don't have the budget to use a photographer in any capacity so I'm forgoing it and just taking my own pictures. It's most definitely not a necessity by any means.

  • @derbysquirrel I’ve never had “professional” pictures taken of my kids. One year I tried to get an acquaintance that is into photography to take pictures but we never were able to get on the same page. All my pictures of my kids have been taken with a phone....woops.
