Re: Questions w/o 1/8

  • @Sarafuss ahh it must be standard for my practice too, I just found my old results in my chart online. Funny, I don’t remember getting it done at all!

  • @zande2016 - I'm interested in knowing what they say about the baby aspirin!  And props to you for still nursing!  My nips were SO sore those first couple months that I almost cried every time DD nursed.  I had to wean her.
  • @acunamatada AFP is the only standard test my Dr does, so I'm def doing it. I think I'm gonna pay for the cell free DNA test too though.
  • i tried searching but it is being weird today. Does anyone have remedy for sore boobs? I never had this with my first and it almost feels like a painful letdown or blocked duct in someways

  • Are birthing and breastfeeding classes necessary? Looking at all that's offered at the hospital I'm planning on giving birth at, and there seems to be sooo many classes offered...most of which cost $$$. STM, Which classes have you taken and thought were helpful vs. ones you wished you passed on?

@rachelsogo I didn’t take either, I don’t know how much a birthing class would have helped my labor because it progressed so quickly at home (not that I’m complaining). I think breastfeeding would have been a good class for me to take because the LC in my hospital forgot about me and I did struggle in the beginning. If it’s something that’s important to you, I would consider taking a class- but there’s also so much information online available.

@lindsayleigh1989 I wish I had advice. I will say though, today I’m wearing a real bra and they’re less painful. But a couple of weeks ago I had the opposite issue.
  • @rachelsogo I think you can get breastfeeding info without taking the classes, and the thing I thought was most helpful about birth classes was the education my hubs got about what was going to happen. when I made the decision to go med-free, the videos of women in labor, specifically in transition, were really helpful for him to be able to recognize in the moment that nothing was wrong with me, I was supposed to look zoned out and in pain and doing crazy trance moans, lol. But you can watch videos on that,I'm sure the doc can help with that, as well as resources on laboring positions and things that you can try to ease pain.
  • Oh also-I was offered the "Spinal Muscular Atrophy" test and apparently its a new recommendation. I have no idea if my insurance covers it but its a special order and is the highest cause of death in infants under 2? Or something like that? Anyway my doc said she doubted I was tested before but I don't know if I should pay extra. Calling insurance tomorrow but wanted to see if others had had it done? Sorry in advance if this has been talked about! Just tell me and I'll search, but I don't remember seeing it.

@SmashJam I was tested for this as part of the billion vials of blood they took from me around when I did the NIPT. Results came in around the same time (all good). Not sure how standard it is-i feel like I get every test under the sun because my MIL is one of the chiefs of the practice I use but wanted to let you know someone else had done it!

    ETA: was covered by insurance
  • Has anyone ever negotiated an FMLA-esque contract when negotiating a new job? I've googled the hell out of this and am not finding  much out. It seems strange that there isn't something, although I understand why it'd be rare.
  • @kat029 I haven't heard of the actual FMLA negotiation. are they not wanting to give you the full 12 weeks?

  • @rachelsogo Never did a class and I never looked back to regret it. I would say I was about as ignorant on the process as possible. I never held a baby before holding mine if that tells you anything.

The body is incredible and you naturally know how to handle the situation. Plus there are experts all around you to help guide you..
  • Ok dumb question...thanks Betty white!

I go for my NT scan mext week and really want to ask them if they can show us between the legs to see if maybe its leaning more girl or boy. Ive done some reading and i know those techs that have done this for a long time can sometimes tell early. I wouldnt take it as definitive of course but it peaks my interest to see what it would look like at 13w +2 vs 20 w or whenever my gender scan is. Any of you that have had the nt scan, do ypu know if they would do this or have you had it done?

We did an elective ultrasound at 13w5d and it was very obvious what we are having. I was really confident from just knowing what to look for. Our tech said she was certain enough that we could start buying clothes.
  • I have a more of a "what would you do" type question. So my best friend just gave birth in December and he DD was born with CMV. It a virus anyone can get but if a mother gets it for the first time while pregnant, it can have some pretty detrimental effects of baby. Out of caution, we haven't been around the baby or family since birth because I wanted to talk to my OB first. Well we talked to my OB yesterday and she did some testing to see if I've ever had the virus. If I had, there would be no concern because I would already be immune. However, I just got the test results which showed that I've never had the virus. I feel so conflicted because on one hand, I do want to even chance seeing my best friend to prevent me possibly getting the virus and passing it to baby. On the other hand, it's pretty rare for a baby to get congenital CMV and then also have issues from it.  There's like a one percent chance. Both their doctor and ours said if we practice good basic hygiene we shouldn't have much to worry about  but that really isn't easing my mind. CMV is something that any mother can contract just like a common cold, it just so happens that it is rare that it hits the level my bestfriend is dealing with now. Sorry for rambling.. I'm just stuck between really wanting to see our best friends and their child (who we usually see at least once a week) and possibly not seeing them for 6 months but knowing we are reducing the likelihood of getting the virus.

@castlec3 that’s tough. I’m not familiar with that virus but that’s nice that your doctor tried to ease your worry a bit- although I’m sure it didn’t help much. Do you happen to know how long the baby will actively have the virus? Or is it a lifelong thing? Maybe you could wait until the virus left the baby’s system (sorry if it’s not temporary- I’ve never heard of CMV). I would take caution like your doctor said, and maybe visit a little less often but definitely practice good hygiene like your doctor said.
ETA another thought.. sorry, it’s early. There are risks in everything. You could contract CMV from a stranger. I’d hate to see you struggle with never seeing a friend and her new baby on the 1% chance you might contract a disease and have it affect the baby.
  • @castlec3 I heard an NPR story on a parent whose child was born with CMV and it was devastating, so first let me say I am so sorry your friend is going through that! I hope her child is minimally affected. During the time of the broadcast, she was pregnant with her third, and they just practice basic hygeine and no kisses on the mouth from her kids, even though she's already had it so there isn't a chance of her contracting it again. That was enough for her to consider having another kid. I know its hard but I agree with @acunamatada that you should go out and see your friend and live your life, and just make sure you limit contact with sick people/practice hygiene/don't mouth kiss people, etc. I think you will go crazy trying to prevent this from happening!
  • @SmashJam I was also tested for SMA. I'm assuming it was covered by my insurance bc my OB is pretty good at telling me if it's not going to be, but I haven't gotten any bills for like anything yet
  • Did we have a post on breastpumps? I cannot find how to search on mobile and have a question.

  • @busymommy23 I believe Christycalifornia felt movement pretty early on as well. especially if you don't have an anterior placenta :) You know your body and the movement. I figure you know the feeling and definitely could have felt it!

  • I have a question unrelated to what we were just talking about. I'm planning our time off for the year and we know we want to go somewhere for a babymoon. For those of you who have done something similar or just traveling past the 20th week, when would be a good time to plan this? I would love to go in May but I'm afraid it might be late to travel at 33 weeks? We plan to fly for 5ish hours to Hawaii. I know everyone is different in terms on how pregnancy goes and how they feel but wanted some feedback.
  • @kissableviv We're going to Hawaii end of April. I'll be 28/29 weeks. I'm a little worried to be traveling that late, as I'm a FTM and have no idea how I'll feel then. But going somewhere as relaxing as Hawaii can't be too bad :)  Our flight is 5ish hours as well... I've read you just have to get up to walk every hour and get an aisle seat so you can go pee/walk around easily. Most airlines won't let you fly past 36 weeks, so you should be fine at 33, but just check to make sure.

  • @kissableviv I'm trying to plan something for end of April at the latest, I'm afraid to wait any longer! FTM though so I don't know how I'll feel. I just wanted to have time between planning a vacation and and getting ready for the actual birth.
  • Regarding CMV-
ill just point out that hospitals oonly restrict pregnant nurses from taking care of two types of isolation patients- one is CMV- other is shingles.
  • Thank you @ckmb_knottie and @rachelsogo! I'm trying to figure out what the weather will be like in Hawaii. I actually wish we could go to Mexico, but damn Zika. That would be a shorter flight and perfect weather.

I'm such beach weather snob, I'm always paranoid to go somewhere and then it rains the whole time! I agree going around 28 weeks would be ideal, and I don't want to be gone more than a week because we plan to travel at Christmas (this baby better like traveling like his mama!). So Hawaii or Mexico are our options from California.

Yep. A CMV patient was the reason I had to out myself as KU 12h after I turned my first test. I wouldn’t risk it personally.

ETA: though I do still care for chicken pox and shingles patients as I’m immune (I’ve had titres drawn showing immunity). I do not care for parvo kids though (Fifths disease) in the first or second tri.

  • @kissableviv we wanted Mexico too! Because a week of eating tacos everyday is my idea of heaven on earth, but alas, Zika. Hawaii weather should be perfect in April/May.  Rain should mostly be gone and it won’t be super hot/humidy.

@kissableviv Im jealous you have such easy access to Hawaii! Florida or the Caribbean are our only easy, warm options, and those are a no-go. I'm actually thinking Palm Springs, if I can find cheap flights to Cali! I was considering Bermuda too, but I think April is questionably warm.
  • @elizabethrn87 and @comealongponds so I think I'm unclear on cmv. I thought that the risk is to the pregnant mom getting infedcted and it can affect the child very negatively...but when the kid is born do they still have cmv? Would the mom? I guess I thought the risk of visiting a child who was infected in utero would be low bc the virus did it's harm and went away. Is that wrong?

I’m not sure- my question would be if the virus is still active and how to determine if it’s active or not anymore.
  • edited January 2018
@SmashJam kids with congenital cmv are born with a viral load that may be shed and cause infection. I do not care for kids with congenital cmv while pregnant.

eta: and like the herpes virus (which this is in the same family as), it can be reactivated and shed at any time asymptomatically.

Based on what I've learned recently the virus is still active in newborns who got the virus while in utero. Typically they "shed the virus" for up to a year meaning they are contagious they whole year. For my friends, their doctor confirmed it was still active through testing urine and saliva.
  • Anyone hiring a doula and care to share how you made a decision? I just started doing some interviews.
  • @ckmb_knottie following this! I would like to hire one for labor though I plan to deliver at the hospital
  • ckmb_1250ckmb_1250 member
    edited January 2018
@kissableviv I'm delivering at a hospital too, but want a doula there to offer advice from another pov, and because I'd ideally like an unmedicated birth. My hospital actually offers them for $300, but I'm skeptical about having a doula who works for the hospital-even if that sounds paranoid, I figure the whole point is making me feel comfortable. The one I just interviewed was $1400 though, and that seems steep.
  • I want to hire a Doula but I already know it's going to be out of my budget. Things are just so tight right now. I'm hoping to give birth in a freestanding birth center, which gives me no choice but to be med free, and I think a doula would really help get me through that. Postpartum doula support would really help too since I'll be going home just a few hours after birth and have a toddler at home. I think if I were to choose one, I'd choose a postpartum doula, though both would be awesome. Guess I'll see how much my tax refund is. If I were trying for med free in a hospital, I would be much more inclined to hire a doula. I think trying to avoid interventions in a hospital can be very difficult and having a doula will help immensely with that.
