Bumping this thread because I have a boy name that’s been rattling around in my head for the last few weeks and I just love.

August. It’s been on my list for a good bit even before I was due in August (but... does that make it cliche and weird?). I’m partial to Gus and then I really fell in love when I watched Wonder recently.., Auggie. Love love love.

Dh will probably hate it!

I don’t really like it... can’t say Augustus in my head without gloop following. I’ve seen Charlie and the chocolate factory more times than I could count!!!

I might steal Augustus for a middle name. I am a big fan of Roman history, and like several Roman names. I wouldn't saddle a baby with a classical Roman first name, but I think I might work it in for a middle!

My best friend has an Augie and that’s just his name not NN. I hated it at first but it fits him. My husband always liked it. I love Gus, but DH has already said no. I don’t think we’ll share our name with others because I don’t want other people’s opinions to influence me. Last time we didn’t even pick a name until we had our son. We went to the hospital with 3.

ETA: I made the mistake of telling my inlaws I like Madeline NN Maddie for a girl. They are insisting it’s a girl and my FIL keeps calling him/her Maddie. It’s so annoying. And I don’t even really love the name anymore.

@amac12999 I really love Madeleine for a girl but hate Maddie. That's the reason it didn't make the final list for DD1 and DD2. But at this point I may just say F it and not call her Maddie and hope it works if we're having another girl. It's hard to keep coming up with girl names, especially since DH insists on pitching the entire list of finalists and starting over each time (lest the baby feel like she is getting a "second place" name).

@amac12999 My brother and SIL were considering Madelyn, but I told them I can name ten Maddies off the top of my head (both Madelines and Madisons), so they decided against it.

DH and I were so set on names (Clara and Michael) but now I'm second-guessing all of the names. DH either wants us to name for someone (which is Jewish tradition) or if we can't think of someone to name for, to use a Hebrew name (but not such a rare Hebrew name that our kids would get made fun of, lien he did). I really like the name Benjamin but he really wants Michael for our first boy, after a good army friend of his. I was also so sold on using the name Clara for my grandmother, but I'm just not feeling it right now. I like Miriam (with Midge as a nickname), but we don't want to use that until after his grandmother Miriam passes (she's 102 and kind of a total badass, so I'd love to name a kid for her). And of course, my favorite Hebrew girl's name (Hila) is also the name of the girl my husband lost his V-card to, so needless to say, we will not be using it. I thought names were going to be the easy part!

Names are so hard! With my son, I loved Ava if he had been a girl, but that name had gotten so popular too! And DH and I have a hard time agreeing too, which makes it tough.

@pghctwife a friend of mine named her son August, calls him Auggie, and he was born in August. So, if you like it, go for it!

We’ve only been tossing around name options half heartedly but some names I possibly like are Felix and Milo (I liked Theo but it’s become fairly common) for a boy and Tabitha for a girl. Tabitha was our second choice with our daughter and I still like it. Hubby hates Milo but is surprisingly open to Felix. No clue on middle names. Both our kids have sort of Celtic names so I feel like I need to stick with the Celtic theme, but there aren’t many names left I like. I also always liked Aoife but it’s always been instantly vetoed due to spelling/pronunciation. I’m just generally lost lol. Maybe I’ll start making a list during my mommy alone time this afternoon.

omg...I JUST suggested this to DH yesterday as I really like it, too! He said "August is a month. Augustus is a name." I totally disagree!

We started discussing names again when we started TTC #2 at the end of the summer since most of our top contenders from DS we don't love as much anymore. We both agreed we love the name Leo James for a boy. It is not short for anything, just Leo (after both of our maternal grandfathers). Now that his child will more than likely be a "Leo" zodiac sign I keep thinking it is kind of cliche, too, but we still love it!

I have a "just" Leo and he is also a Leo zodiac sign. I say go to for it but I'm biased

I love madeleine personally - with a more French promounciation. But Maddie is so prevalent.

@princesslockness oh for sure. It just seemed like one of ‘those’ names with an obvious nn, hard to avoid and since I hated them... didn’t go with it. Dh now works with a James and says he sees I was right - customers areCONSTANTLY taking it upon themselves to call him Jim though his name tag says James. Ppl are crazy.

We didn't name DD until our last day at the hospital. We went in with the idea that she was going to be a Charlotte, but didn't see it when we met her. Thus she is now Allison.

I think nicknames can be avoidable . With both my brothers and I, our names can easily be given Nn but we all prefer our names as is so we just correct people and everyone in my life knows they need to call me by my full name or they will get the death stare

August was also our top boy name. I love it, but I don't think I can commit with the whole August birth month thing. I think it's too much personally. I am however really bummed bc we agreed on it so quickly and I don't think another name will instantly click

DH is set on doing another L names, since Ds is L* named. I'm not completely against it (I think sibling sets are cute) but he keeps vetoing all my boy names! And basically everyone he's picked is just a big no from me. *Sigh* I think we need a couple names prepared incase our chosen one doesn't *fit* when we see baby. I may have a battle on my hands! Lol

I have a name conundrum: DH's mom's brother passed away a while back (before my time). He was DH's mom's only sibling and a much beloved member of the family who died fairly suddenly and left behind two young kids. We are considering using his name (Harry) - probably as a middle name, but I also do love Harrison as a first name - as a tribute to him and a nice gesture to DH's mom, but I feel like we should ask DH's cousins first to see if we would be stepping on any toes. Neither of them have children yet so I would imagine it is possible they would want to use their father's name in some manner at a later time? Thoughts? Would that be a really awkward thing to ask them?

@legallykate I think if you do it was a middle name or a take on the name- like Harrison, it doesn't stop them from also using it later. I love Harrison, super strong sounding!

@legallykate I think a middle name is completely fine and no need to ask. If you choose to use it as a first name (or even a variation of it where Harry could become the nickname), I would ask first.

@legallykate I think it’s very kind of you to ask, but if you want to honor him I think that’s fine to do without also. I’ve always gotten really defensive of names that were ‘mine’ but got brought to reality where you can’t claim a name if you don’t have a kid. What if they choose to never have kids? If you love it go for it

@legallykate I maybe don’t see a need to ask but possibly just mention it, so if it’s something they wanted to do, they could let you know. This is coming from my perspective because DH’s step brothers wife is pregnant and due in June. We were talking names and I mentioned that if we have a girl the middle name is Jane after my mom and she told me their middle name is Jane too. I totally don’t care but at least now they know I didn’t copy them, if that makes sense. I’d think they’d be honored. You shouldn’t not do it just because they might want to too, in my opinion.

@legallykate Some perspective from the other side: I’m the oldest of 40+ first cousins on my moms side. My middle name is the same as 2/3 of the girls. We are all _________ Marie. I don’t even want to know how many second cousins I share it with.

It has never bothered any of us enough to mention it, and no one really notices it, outside of our family/spouses.

I say if you want it as a middle, go for it!! If you want it as a first, mention it and see what they say.

I really feel like this baby wont have a name until we leave the hospital. With my first I knew her name before I even met my husband. He didn't argue so we have an Austyn Anita Rayne. This time around I really love Quinn Adeline Sue for a girl (this week atleast) and for a boy I love Knox, Rhett, or Wyatt. The second middle name would be Earl and not sure about the first one with these. I have a big feeling it is a boy this time around, we shall see.

I need opinions. Is Knox too trendy a name? I started liking it before I realized Angelina Jolie used it and am worried it’s too popular a name.

@cthulu popular and trendy are two different things imo... Knox feels like a more trendy name to me. But I’d be surprised if it’s very popular (you can look at the ss list for the country and your state, to start to see how popular it has been). I mean... conversely a name like Michael is perpetually popular but trendy? Ehhhh lol

As for if its ‘too’ that’s for you to decide. Everyone has different preferences on name popularity. We wanted to avoid top 10-20, but others really don’t care about that.

I think, too, that the popularity or trendiness of a name greatly varies by region. For example, my son's name is Owen and I know that is SUPER popular up north, but it's not in the south. It's in the 60s here, I think. But up north, it's in the top 10 in some areas. I've met some people from up north who said they'd never name a kid Owen because it's so popular but we haven't met another, lol. So consider that, as well.

check ssa.gov they have the name lists and you can break it down by state to see how many people used it the prior year (2017 will be out later... I feel like usually March ish?)
