Weekly Questions 12/4

Re: Weekly Questions 12/4

  • @desertdweller21, this test I actually did myself, it's not a cervical swab like a Pap smear is, so hopefully they will be more comfortable doing it.  I just swabbed the inside of my vaginal canal (only like an inch or so) and just took the swab back out to the midwife.

  • @desertdweller21 I really dislike it when doctors prescribe antibiotics without even seeing the patient. This is why we now have antibiotic resistant bacteria out there, because it's so overprescribed. I think the safety of the meds really depends on which antibiotic you are prescribed. I'm glad you're calling your gyno!
  • @thunderberry I feel like I should say that I totally agree with you.  I was answering her question as to whether or not it was normal, but just because I think it's not unusual for a doctor/practitioner to do it, doesn't mean I think it's good practice.

  • I agree too. I try to avoid unnecessary antibiotics (why do doctors even prescribe them for viral infections?!) and if needed I always finish them. I don't understand why they wouldn't see me first.

  • @desertdweller21 i have had so much discharge this pregnancy and it is causing a lot of vaginal itching later in the day.  I did not have this with my first pregnancy, but this is an awful symptom.  TMI but no foul smells, colors or consistencies, so I am chalking it up to a normal pregnancy symptom but I do plan to talk to my OB about it at my next appt if I'm still experiencing it.
  • @bwow615 Also TMI, but no smell here either. I have itchiness with yellowish discharge (which honestly has been my normal this whole pregnancy). Sometimes the itchiness completely goes away. I stopped feeling her move as much so I think I might just be freaking out. My PGAL paranoia is in overdrive right now.  I'm waiting to hear back from the gyno.

I need to step up for the medical professionals on this one. DH is a Physician Assistant and I can tell you that he is hounded daily by patients demanding that they get prescriptions for antibiotics, even when unnecessary, because it would “give them peace of mind.” The vast majority of the time, they aren’t prescribed unless absolutely necessary. However, I know it does happen and in our area, urgent care centers are the worst offenders of this practice. It doesn’t do anyone any good to take them unless they really need them. It’s also astounding to me to hear patients want them so badly when they don’t realize that all antibiotics have side effects, and some can be very unpleasant!

  • @Poppy0419 you’re definitely in my thoughts. Im so glad you are home and at least have a diagnosis. Also FX your aunt can help you avoid surgery.
  • I'm glad my midwife prescribed me abx for mastitis without seeing me.  It was hard enough hauling myself and two kids to the CVS drivethru to pick up the prescription, hahah.

@tincupchalice I had the same experience. Severe breast pain with red streaking and high fever? You bet it’s mastitis and you bet I was happy they didn’t make me come in.

But I agree with antibiotic overuse and feel it is both the doctors and patients to blame. Patients demand them and doctors comply to keep happy patients. Not cool.

  • TMI Alert--
I've been dealing with some itching and redness the last three days. TMI alert but I feel like my discharge smells kind of like urine. I assumed it was a yeast infection but now I'm worried it's BV, I've googled and still can't figure it out. Any inside info on what the symptoms are?

When I had it there was definitely an ammonia smell. I’d put a call into your doctor.
  • @gildah

Thank you! I'll put a call in on Monday.
  • I didn’t go back and read all comments so sorry if someone mentioned this, but does anyone else take a vaginal probiotic? My midwife has me on one daily, and if I start to feel “off balance” I take two. It’s worked like a charm so far, and wish I took one the first pregnancy.

And I agree with over using antibiotics... masteitis is fine bc it’s pretty clear what that is. If you’ve had 15 UTIs, yeah you probably know what those are like and can be prescribed what you usually get... but, antibiotics for viruses are such a waste! And medical professionals should have the balls to deal with whiney patients, I’m sorry. My DH is a Doc too, but it’s not all about press-ganey scores... overusing antibiotics is not helping people..
  • @Poppy715 sorry to read you’ve been in the hospital! I totally missed that. Hope you recover quickly. Will be thinking of you!
  • Thinking about you @poppy715!  I hope you start feeling better soon!  I'm so sorry you have been feeling so poorly.  FX that you won't have to have surgery!
