Anyone who lives in cold weather, I need your advice! I have no idea how to dress/pack for our NYC trip for myself and DS. I am a SoCal girl through and through and my idea of winter is sixty degrees. Help me!
@mileswithmyles Did you end up buying that maternity winter coat you were asking about? If so, just make sure you have a variety of layers that you can combine depending on the temperature. Long sleeve shirt or flannel, sweater or hoodie, fleece jacket or vest, and coat. So far it hasn't been cold enough that you should need multiple pairs of pants simultaneously, but if you're not used to the cold, then yeah, leggings under pants is a good option. Definitely bring a hat and scarf to add some more warmth no matter which layers you wear. And if you're extra cold, just run into a store every few blocks to warm up .
@mileswithmyles layers are your best bet to staying warm. Be sure to have hats that cover your ears and scarfs. Wind can also be an issue so make sure jackets will keep the wind out. For DS get mitten clips that clip the mittens to the coat so they don't get lost. The good thing about NYC is lots of places to stop and get warm! Have a great time, it is so much fun at Christmas!!!
@mileswithmyles definitely lots of layers and bring thick/warm socks. I have a hard time if my feet get cold and if you’re doing a lot of walking you’ll want your toes to stay warm. You’ll have a blast, we went to NYC at Christmas a few years ago and it was so much fun!
@lincbeesmom I’m opting out when we go to NYC because I’m worried about falling. But, I’m a really clumsy person when not pregnant and my balance has only gotten worse.
@mileswithmyles as others said layers are key. Look into cuddle duds or silk long underwear. You wouldn’t think silk would be warm, but it’s actually very warm when layered and doesn’t add bulk.
I have a question for TTM+. I just found out at my appointment yesterday that my doctor's office doesn't deliver at the hospital right by my house like they did with DS. He was a fast delivery (2 hours 45 minutes once they broke my water). I know typically second babies come faster than first, so I'm a little nervous about being a lengthy drive from the hospital. Plus DH works for the fire department, so he's not homes every night.
My question is about your labors. The doctor had to break my water with DS, so I'm wondering if that means it's less likely to break on it's own. My thinking is that maybe the distance to the hospital won't be a huge issue if I need help getting labor started. What was your experience with your labors?
@pandakov, I am about 45 to an hour from both choices.
I was not in active labor. I was having Braxton Hick contractions every couple of minutes, but no real contractions. I was also at 5cm, so the doctor sent me to L&D thinking I would go into labor on my own, but I got to 7cm (tried walking the hospital floor) and still wasn't in active labor. They broke my water to get things going and he was born 2 hours 45 minutes later. I just worry about going into labor on my own and delivering on the side of the road!
@JNCPro3130 if my labor only took 2 hours and 45 minutes with my first I would be too!
It sounds like after they broke your water water you hit transition (thus the quickness!) It took me like ten hours to get from 1- 6 cm dilated but then after that I dilated to 10 within 45 minutes.
Have you talked to your provider to see what they say?
@pandakov, we are about 25-30 minutes from the hospital. Our last time I was already there due to pre-e worries before I had a scheduled c-section, but our plan then and now are the same. If we have to go in 10 times before delivering and have 10 false alarms, I am fine with that because I do not want a home birth, or a car birth, or a side of the road birth, ha.
Eta- my fault, I thought that was a general question posted for everyone. I may need more caffiene today.
@pandakov, they just gave me my choices yesterday. I got home, looked at the distance, and got worried. My paramedic husband is concerned too. I just wasn't sure if it was a legit concern since I didn't go into active labor on my own.
@JNCPro3130 I had a SUPER fast labor with my first (about the same as you) and we aren't quite as far as you, but with traffic at certain times of the day could probably get close to an hour drive, plus logistics of what would we do with the first kid depending on the timing of labor- the whole thing was a major stress for me with my second.
Our rough plan with the doctor was the first significant or timeable contraction that I had, I would call them and go to the hospital. I didn't have any history of BH or anything so I wasn't too worried about false labor (though every baby is different yadda yadda). My parents live closer to the hospital than to us so if it happened when we were all home together (evening, night, weekend), they would meet us there and we would bring our son. If it was during the day when he was at daycare, they would pick him up at daycare. My brother lives between us and the hospital/my parents so he was also on call. And we have a few neighbors who didn't officially ask but if there had been a pinch and they were around, they could've been trustworthy options. Ok, getting long winded here haha.
I ended up going even later with my second and being induced so it was all for nothing. My water didn't break spontaneously with either kid. Since I was induced I took a little longer for labor, but I was still from first significant contraction to baby out in less than 6 hours.
@tincupchalice that sounds like my best friend. She thought she was in early labor with her third - since it was during business hours and her contractions had just started her OB told her to swing by the office so he could check her out. When she got there he checked her - she was NINE cm dilated!! They had to call an ambulance to come take her to the hospital - her OB rode in the back with her. She delivered their daughter literally within five minutes of hitting the floor.
@JNCPro3130 I would be concerned if I was you too. Good news is your husband is an EMT. Here’s hoping he’s at home when you go into labor! I would talk to your doctor about it at your next appointment and see what they want you to do. But I can say if I was you I would be hauling ass to hospital at the first inkling of a contraction.
@JNCPro3130 just throwing it out there as a possibility, but are you able to switch providers to someone who would deliver you at the hospital that is closer to you? I switched during my first pregnancy because she was moving practices and the new hospital she would deliver at would have been about 45 min, without traffic. traffic who knows.
Thank you, everyone! I'll talk to my doctor at my next appointment.
@bwiw615, My doctor is tied to insurance (I have Kaiser, if you're familiar with that insurance company). We've had it for years and open enrollment has come and gone. I have to go to a Kaiser supported facility.
@JNCPro3130 my water broke on its own and afterwards it took about 6 hours (I pushed for 1 of those hours) before DS entered the world.
It was actually really funny. It was 3 days before my due date and unseasonably warm out so I decided to go for a 3km walk. When I got home I sat down on the couch to rest. My phone was on the coffee table in front of me and it vibrated. I leaned forward to check it and there was this "POP!" feeling and I stood up immediately, and there was a rush of fluid so I raced as fast as a pregnant lady can to the bathroom because my hubby had jokingly told me I better not have that happen on our new couch lol. He was downstairs working and heard a loud thud and me scurrying and he knew it was time. Btw I managed to not get any on the couch! Just a trail to the bathroom lmao
oh my gosh, all these faraway hospitals are giving me anxiety. I was induced with DS so there were no surprises and it took FOREVER (checked in 8 pm thursday, started pitocin at 7 AM friday, did the cervical softener 12 AM saturday, DS was born 5:47 Am Saturday). I'm going off on a tangent, but I wish they would have just done the cervical softener when they started my pitocin so we could have saved ourselves 24 hours of labor (thank the lord for fentanyl) but anyway...Our hospital was still 10 minutes from our house.
This time around, the hospital is still about 10 minutes away. That's as far as I can handle haha.
@JNCPro3130 that makes sense, I'm not familiar with the insurance you have but I know with insurance things are getting a lot more strict. I just went through open enrollment at work and had to switch insurance providers so that the closer hospital for me would be covered. That change in insurance providers also comes with a higher cost each paycheck . Not happy about that. With DS I was having contractions all weekend, contractions were less than 3 min apart and coming very frequently, we got to the hospital, got checked in and I didn't deliver DS until almost 15 hours later. I think/hope the chances of you being able to make it there are good!
@lincbeesmom are you generally comfortable ice skating? Personally, I would definitely skip it. I don't know that a fall would really hurt baby, but it's so easy to have something move out of alignment. I haven't gone in many years though, except for a single loop last winter holding on for dear life, so maybe I'm not the best person to ask. I didn't go because I had lots of leg issues for years and doctors said not to.
@JNCPro3130 what happens if you go to the close hospital when you're in labor? Will insurance cover it? If so, and you're ok not having the same Dr at delivery, I think you're ok. If your water breaks, you go to the cost one. Either way, make sure your H brings an ob kit along.
@nanifrog, that's actually a great question. I'm not really sure but I worry about insurance not covering it.
The good news is that the hospital I have to go to, from what I hear, is amazing! It's been around for a long time but I've heard the staff is amazing and although I hope I don't need it, the NICU is supposed to be one of the best in my area.
Anyone else having sciatic pain? I’m only having it in my left hip. Going to the chiropractor helps for about a week but it’s getting expensive to go every week. Any suggestions? I exercise regularly. It doesn’t seem to be any better or worse with exercise. I try to stretch it regularly but what I’m doing is just barely taking the edge off.
@bjkay22, I keep getting it on and off only on my left side as well. I haven't found anything that helps. Sometimes exercise helps, sometimes it hinders it. It'll sometimes come out of nowhere, like this weekend while trying to prep for our party. It came out of nowhere and scared my mom and mil who came early to help with last second prep, thank goodness.
@suchaglencoco yikes, what a terrible time to have a flare up! It sounds like exactly the same as what I’m having. I assume it’s just because everything is shifting around in there. I am going to try Tylenol next time it flares up.
@bjkay22 I have it really bad this time around. Chiropractor is the only thing that has semi helped me but totally agree that it’s getting expensive quick. It did end up going away close to my 3rd trimester with my first pregnancy so here’s for hoping.
@bjkay22 I have been having it, too. The chiropractor helps a lot, but I also do stretches/yoga targeted at relieving sciatic pain. My chiropractor also told me that keeping your legs up helps with relieving the pressure. He said I should prop my feet up as much as possible when I sit down and to lay down when I can. He said that sitting actually makes it worse than standing out laying down.
@JNCPro3130 I'm right with you on the side of the road delivery fear. My first was 6 hours start to finish. Second was induced because I was walking around at 4.5 cm having prodromal labor- she (and I!) were worried that I wouldn't realize when it was the real thing. Labor was 2 hours from water breaking. This one we are now in a city with a lot more traffic, and the hospital is a solid 45 min away- 1.5 hours in bad traffic. I'm legit terrified of this kid shooting right out on the side of the road. And I have no answers! Just empathy- I don't know what we're going to do.
@mileswithmyles that’s super helpful! I noticed when I lay down it doesn’t bother me as much. I’ll try to prop my feet up more. Thank you. FX it doesn’t get much worse for either of us
Super random question..anyone have a good brand of underwear(maternity or not) with full coverage? It seems that my butt is growing with my belly and I can't find a good fit.
@mmb4532 I like warners, they have a style called no muffin top and another style called no pinchies. I noticed I did have to go up a size the last time I bought some which was a few weeks ago.
@JNCPro3130 I’m sure active labor would be considered an emergency and the closest hospital to you would be covered, but your out of pocket may still be the “out of network” cost. It wouldn’t hurt to call and asked what that would look like. I always thought Kaiser was the monopoly in Cali and basically everyone took it! Eh, this would stress me out too, even though I doubt I’ll get lucky with a short labor
@JNCPro3130 I was going to say something similar to @holli0801, with EMTALA laws whatever ER you go to can not turn you away/transfer you until you are stable, which means birthing the baby AND the placenta. They can, however, still bill you for it, but they have to accept you no matter your ability to pay, so if you can't afford the bill and your insurance won't cover it (which some don't, but some will pay the same amount they would if it was an in-network hospital, and you would only have to pay the difference) you could just tell the hospital you can't pay the bill, and they can't really do anything to you. Would calling an ambulance be a possible option? You still might have the baby before you get to the hospital, but at least it would be with trained people and appropriate equipment, and their chances of getting you to the hospital quicker than you could drive are pretty good, too.

My second water broke pretty soon after my contractions started.
I would be concerned about distance to the hospital.
I had a friend whose first was a pretty short labor. Her second she delivered in the parking lot less than an hour after labor started.
