For spring break one year I traveled to Costa Rica and patrolled the beach at night for poachers trying to get sea turtle eggs. We also cleaned the beach so the babies had a clear path to the ocean.
@luna8433 That is awesome. I bet you had so much fun! I also worked in Costa Rica one summer right before college at a zoo of sorts called Monkey Park. We fed the monkeys and other rescued animals, cleaned cages, and led tours. Then on the weekends partied with locals on the beaches and went surfing.
I did my study abroad on a cruise ship and completely circumnavigated the globe in 100 days, stopping in 10 countries. Single coolest/most impactful thing I’ve ever done in my life.
I used to do competative weight lifting in college. I got up to about 450lbs on the squat, before I stopped being able to fit into women's clothing at all, and decided it was a hobby that would never get me laid .
It WAS funny to find out all of the male sports players in the school were completely terrified of me because they practiced in the same weight room I did.
I lived at Olympic National Park for 2 months one summer doing the "Teacher Ranger Teacher" program. I got to learn about all aspects of the park. It was a life changing experience for me for many reasons, but a big one was it gave me the courage to end my relationship with my crappy ex-husband.
When DH and I were dating we went on a road trip to British Columbia and climbed a mountain! It wasn't a huge one, just under 9k feet. It took us 2 days to climb it. Day 1 climbed about it 3/4 of the way up. Camped. Then climbed the remainder and back down the next day. Photo of it in the spoiler.

@kmalls was it semester at sea?! I did the semester at sea maymester trip—it was only a month through Central America but it was AMAZING. I wish I had done a whole semester.
About 6 months after my late husband passed, I bought a foreclosure house. I had about 20 hours of help from friends cleaning, doing demo and helping me move heavy shit. Drywall was about the only thing that I didn’t rip out. I was already comfortable with plumbing, basic electrical and basic woodworking, but learned to install luxury vinyl tile, sand and refinish wood floors, install new laminate on the counters, and custom made a few cabinets. It’s a now a rental, which is nice for the extra money.

@rmmorris yeah! Fall ‘02! I think it’s great you did a Maymester, it’s so worth doing whatever you can. Going on another full semester trip as a continuing ed student with my husband is on the bucket list for sure!
@beach_mama I wish I liked Xmas as much as you! I have always associated it with extreme stress. Also, Xmas music makes me want to jump off a bridge
Now that my kid is old enough to appreciate it, I am starting to enjoy it more. But the music is still nails on a chalkboard. I want to hear more than 5 songs in a month!
@keeksie84 JEALOUS!!! Olympic National Park is #1 on my places to visit list!
As for me... I think the way my husband and I met is kind of interesting. We both listen to the exact same morning sports-talk radio show and when I was single, I made friends with a lot of other listeners by going to station events and on forums and Twitter. We were randomly introduced by mutual friends on Twitter and I immediately found out he was a Pittsburgh Penguins fan and told him he had no chance in hell of ever dating me. We moved in together a little over a year later
Wow, these are all really cool, I don’t have anything to share that is anywhere near as amazing as what you all have shared. I do like to travel and have been to Costa Rica as well but it was just for fun. In high school I was really into dance and enjoyed participating in dance competitions. Tap dancing was my favorite.
I have one travel related. I did my internship in Dubai (as it was being built up) The expereience was amazing and I was definitely a minority in that I met no other americans in my entire time there. During my stay I was groped by an egyptian man on a taxi boat. As a lone 19 year old girl, it was completely terrifying. Thanks for the memories asshole.
I spent the last year before getting pregnant competing in competitive bodybuilding (not the badass strength kind like @ngolimento but the lean bikini division)
Travel related: I’ve been on 8 cruises in my life and I love them all!!
Not travel related: I have a teaching degree that I used to teach kindergarten but then stopped when I opened up my own licensed in-home daycare. I did that for eight years, and stopped when my son was in first grade.
I work part time now in a field that has NOTHING to do with education!
Wow! Compared to my friends, I have lead an adventurous life in the sense that I traveled, didn't get married young and immediately pop out babies. Compared to most of you? I'm fairly boring lol. Y'all are some badasses. I've done a lot of beach travel, but outside of that, I've done trips to Mexico and Trinidad for philanthropy purposes, small trip into Canada just over the border and a tour of Israel.
Something maybe most haven't done....I went to a Christian school and competed in what we called Bible quiz team. I have memorized almost the entire New Testament and won second in individuals at Nationals my senior year.
@ekendall09 I am strongly considering doing a bikini competition post partum. I love to workout and I think it will give me some strong motivation to get back in shape after DD is born.
@ekendall09 I consider it more badass to put in the time and work it takes to do body sculpting. I am just genetically inclined towards strength, it didnt take me much beyond 3 to 4 gym sessions a week. I guarantee you worked harder! To me, that is more badass.
@ngolimento they are each an art in themselves. Your squat strength for 3-4 sessions a week is crazy!! I was proud of my 145 squat and that was tough haha
Yeahhhh...I'm boring. I've never traveled. Never out of the country (though I have no interest unless it's a beach resort and I can drink all day on the beach lol). Not even to Florida. The furthest I've been is Texas. Ain't nobody got no $$ fo' dat....like, ever! Lol.
Travel related: I lived in Singapore for 3 months when DD1 was a year old and I was newly pregnant with DD2. We didn’t do as much exploring as we would have done I felt I weren’t pregnant (or if I were 2nd trimester pregnanct for most of the time), but we did make it to Thailand for a couple trips.
Not travel-related: I was editor in chief of my college newspaper. It was enough to convince me I was done with journalism for good.

Well now I feel like a weirdo for not doing a travel fact about me .
I was raised by a family that is addicted to travel, so I had been to over 15 foreign countries before the age of 25. Once we get our kids out of the nest, I am going to do everything in my power to go back to doing a lot of travel. Kids are so expensive.
@kmalls One of my good friends (and college roommate) did semester at sea and loved it! I had to think back, but I'm pretty sure she did it a year or two before you did. She's still good friends with some of the people she met there.
I've run 13 half marathons (and two full - never again), and took last year off from running because we were selling and buying a house and I was burnt out. I'm going to register for my 14th half marathon for next Fall. Looking forward to getting back into running after this baby is born!
@irenejean 13 halfs is amazing! I’m always slightly jealous and in total awe of people who can distance run, it seems like an impossible feat for me. I was a huge athlete growing up but running was always my Achilles heel. Even at peak fitness in college I was lucky if I could run a mile without stopping. I’d love to be able to run the way you do!

Ditto to this! I just do not have the running gene (particularly unfair since my mom was a competitive marathoner). I am so in awe of distance runners.

I am jealous of all you long term travelers! I’m not really that interesting either! I did lost about 100 pounds though after my son turned one. It wasn’t easy, so I’m pretty proud of that. Even though my body is rebelling now that I’m pregnant again.

That's amazing! I'm assuming you fall into the runners category too don't you...but are maybe only 'okay' at it?

Thanks, the running actually started about 10 months into my journey, but it’s become therapeutic for me. I’m holding on as long as I can now! I’m definitely okay at it, and I live in OK now. So it works both ways.
My family are avid runners. I help crew my Dad in 100 mile ultra marathons which is a fun experience on it's own. I have scoured the US, but the most I have been out of the country is 30 minutes in Mexico. I have been to Hawaii 3 times though. I LOVE the snow, but I don't do winter sports I just like watching and playing in it.
It's not necessarily about me per se, but my husband was born in South Africa, and all family outside of his immediate family is still there. My ILs winter there every year. We've been twice, and I'm already itching to go back.
I took a taxidermy class in high school and stuffed a squirrel which I proudly gave to my father for Fathers day.
Holy smokes ladies! You are all badasses! Love reading all the travel and study abroads!
@g_amoss Good on you girl! You sound like one hell of a contractor! I'm totally the handier one in my family, but I won't touch electrical or plumbing!
Keeping up with the travel theme: DH and I have been married for 5.5 years and in that time we've been on 9 trips together. This is only counting trips where we've flown multiple states over for a vacation or out of the country. We've also been on a couple separately. I'm so glad we did so much during those first few years because I know we won't travel as much once the baby comes.
Not travel related: I have dreams of opening my own bakery some day. Right now it's just a dream, and it will probably stay that way forever, but it's nice to have a dream.
I almost became a long distance runner. Right before Jr high my best friend convinced me to join the cross country team. But then she moved and I didn't join.
Gosh - I need to hit the road more! DH and I just purchased a pop up camper so we can hit the road with the kids more. H and I have always been tent campers, but with the littles and a baby, we thought this would be better.
