I change my mind constantly. Constantly. I’ve always wanted a girl named Louise (my moms middle name) and to call her Lucy but now I know a bunch of people with dogs named that. Ugh. Human name. So I’m leaning towards using Rose? If it’s a boyt we’re thinking Theodore because I’ve always loved that name but I know it’s creeping it’s way up the popular list so shattering my 13 year old hearts dream but whatever...again, second guessing everything.

I can't believe how many names I've loved since childhood that were completely unpopular in the past are in the top 20 now! So weird how cyclical it is. When our kids are 30 they'll be like, "I really like this name I heard somewhere...Jennifer!"
@aphphilly I am so skeptical of that list. Atticus as #2, really?? But maybe I'm just in denial because we've been thinking of Theodore and I hate to see it so high.
Now that we know it's a boy we are thinking more seriously of names. Why are boy names so hard?? As I said Theodore is still a top contender, but I'd want to wait and see what the official popularity lists say for 2017. If we did he would go by Théo (pronounced Tay-oh) because H can't say TH words :P
Also considering Finn (but it doesn't sound great in French unfortunately), some sort of name where Leo could be the nickname that ISN'T Leonard, or Matteo. Is Leonid too out there?
Anyone else just have no names on their radar? We started with a list, but the top girl name just got used on DHs side and our top boy name I'm "eh" about now. And we have no middle names. Last night, we kind of started with middle names as they are in the family, my side. DH gets to choose this middle name if it's from his family and he has nothing this time.
*side note, I was watching Teen Mom 2 and one of them brought their son home with name. I looked at my daughter and said "that'll be mommy, bringing your sibling home with no name and calling it 'baby' until we figure out something."
The conclusion I came to with my last pregnancy is that names that are popular now vs when we were young is that now there is such a wider variety of names. So if a name is #1 in popularity now there might be 250,000 (totally made up) babies named that name, whereas when we were born the most popular name was given to a million babies. If that makes sense? My son’s name was in the top 15 the year he was born but I haven’t heard of many kids with his name and when people ask his name, they sometimes react as if it’s a rare name (it’s not, it’s traditional/biblical)
@thunderberry I think it's just the top names on the Nameberry site. If you follow the link in the article it also shows the top names in the US. Probably not very reliable, but still surprising given it's probably a pretty big sample size!
@thunderberry Oh, and I hope you're not mad, but Leonid (if I'm thinking of how it would be pronounced correctly) sounds kind of like someone with a strong Boston accent saying Leonard. I think people would respond with "I'm sorry, did you say Leonard?" a lot. I love Theodore. It was one of my top choices until our good friends named their son Theo, taking it out of the running.
@thunderberry I do not think you HAVE to find a longer name for Leo to be a nn for. You could always just name your child Leo. I have a cousin who did that...and nobody thought twice about it.

The name of the meteor shower is pronounced "LEE-oh-nids" but probably a lot of people aren't going to know that! If everyone thinks he's a Bostonian Leonard I would be so sad. Leo is on our list! No long version. But I totally get wanting a longer name that you can shorter. I usually look for that when picking a name. This has a family connection though so it's a bit of an exception.
@Ceridwen77 I've actually noticed A LOT of the names on this thread are on that list. Meh...you also need to take into account location, east vs. west coast. I also noticed many of those names are derived from shows in the last few years.
@Ceridwen21 I didn't want top 100 for DS. It still isn't in top 100 now, but there is about to be a second in his preschool class. Didn't think that would happen!

@Ceridwen21 I felt the same way when picking DS's name. It wasn't in the top 100 and there is another boy with the same name and spelled the same way in his class of 16. I am throwing that rule out the window for this baby because it clearly didn't matter, lol!

It's interesting you have Parker Nova because DH wanted Nova Parker for initials NPC...gaming reference of course. I said no because it makes me think of a person parking a Chevy Nova...
The one hesitation I have for the first one is it depends on what your last name initial is, might be odd together. I really like Parker Emerson, Nova or Quin. Have you thought about spelling Quinn with a double N?

We won't find out what we are having until the anatomy scan in late December, but I've been looking at names. I'm really struggling with boys names. Our last name ends in -en, so a lot of names seem too rhymey (Aiden, Nolan, etc). Then so many seem to common or too old mannish. Seriously, the struggle is real. I like Beckett, but it looks like it's become quite popular and climbed the ranks last year. I also liked Emric, but DH thinks it's too European sounding and like we're trying too hard. I'm looking for other names that end in the -ett sound as I think it compliments our last name well. Emmett is on the table, but I don't love it yet.
For girls, I like Genevieve, Caliana, Sylvie, Teylie, Vivienne, Rosalie, and Kalina. This list is likely to change. All would compliment my Dd's name well, 3 syllables and end in -elle. DD was almost Genevieve, but I'm still liking it this go around. Maybe nickname Evie.
When I was pregnant with my first in 2014 our top picks were Penelope (Penny) and Theodore (Teddy). But when she was born we changed our minds. I’m so glad we did because I cannot believe how popular those names have become! Teddy stayed on the list for #2 but it was another girl. So here we are actually having a boy and I feel like every other kid I meet on the playground is a Theo. I’m sad because all the names are either way too popular or way too weird for DH. Our top contender right now is Augustus but that is a “fast riser” on the nameberry list . Also the dog across the street is Gus but I’ve mainly gotten over that....

We loved all versions of that name but our last name ends in the "et" sound so Margaret just didn't work. #2 ended up being Magnolia so we could call her Maggie. And I end up calling her Maggie Mae or Maggie Moo most of the time - her middle is not officially Mae though I looked for something else that Maisie could be a nickname for and couldn't find much. I don't like stand alone nicknames (just personal preference) or nicknames that are too much of a stretch from the full name.
I'm a name lover. DH has given me free rein on this one since he came to the realization that he picked our first two daughters' names by virtue of the fact that he vetoed everything I liked! My girls are also contributing. They come home with new name ideas every day. The older one has some good ideas - she's come home with Savannah, Tallulah, Joy, Delaney and Elsa in the past week. The younger one has come home in the past week with Princess Peach, Luigi, Sparkle Star and Olive Sparkle. We love unique (< top 500) but easily pronounceable names with some significant meaning or family connection, a nature connection of some kind, a long version and a strong nickname.

I know... We probably won't use it because of that. Its background and origin is actually COMPLETELY male. It's a very old male name in Ireland. But unfortunately it's one of those male names that has been stolen by girls like so many others!
