Travel after a d&c

Hi I'm not sure what board would be the right one to post this question on but thought this might be it. I just found out on Friday that I have had a missed miscarriage and will be scheduling a d&c hopfully for Monday or Tuesday. I am supposede to traveling to Italy for a week on Thursday evening. My question is has anyone traveled the same week that they had a d&c and do you think that it is possible or am I just crazy for even still considering. I just feel like I'd really be able to recover mentally away from my everyday life. But also realize that I really have to wait and see how I feel before making a final decision. Any thoughts are much appreciated

i am really sorry about your loss. i had a similar situation.  i had my d&c on a monday and was supposed to go on vacation on that thursday.  i figured it would be fine but wanted to ask my dr. to make sure...unfortunately she thought i was crazy and said i absolutley could not go. i was really suprised because i felt physically fine, and thought the trip was going to be a great way to start healing and recover.  so i didn't go.  it still makes me sad.

when i spoke to my dr on the phone yesterday she said she advise against it because the d&c is surgery. i still feel like i need to wait and see how i feel because i know my body, but i'm still looking to hear what other women have experienced. so you regret not going looking back now or do you feel you made the right decision.

i really wish i could have gone, and although by thursday i felt fully physically recovered... no i do not regret my decision.  my dr. explained after surgery you never know what can arise and she needed me resting and nearby in case there were any complications.  for me i needed to go with what my dr. thought best.  the airline and the company we rented the house from were very accomodating when they found out about my situation and i was able to reschedule all of it (including my sister and her dh's plane tickets) without any penalties.

Italy does sound like a WONDERFUL trip!  You've got risks going. Is there any alternatives?   What does your gut feeling say? 

After my d/e I had cramping and still do. let's see its been 4 days since surgery. They also recommend no physical activity for 2 weeks.  Will you be doing lots of walking around in Italy? Plus you have risk for infection and excessive bleeding.Would you want to be in an ER in Italy if you need additional medical care?

my gut right now is saying to wait and see. i expect to be walking some but realize that my plans will totally change now under the circumstances. i'm assuming that after the d&c no matter what i would be on antibiotics to avoid infection. i'm still not sure how i feel about the possibility of an er in italy. thanks for your post.

i had my d&e this month and just got back from ireland. i didn't have any issues but everyone is different and yes you will be on antibiotics.

I am sorry for your loss.  Everyone and every D&C is different, but in my experience I would say no......that seems like too much, too soon.  Sometimes women feel well enough after and sometimes they don't.  With my first D&C I felt pretty decent but had bouts of pain for a a while after.  With my second D&C I had some complications and had A LOT of pain for a few weeks after......I couldn't do much more than sit on the couch with pain killers.  With my last D&C, I felt week for a few days and then had a night of strong cramping about 5 days after my D&C.  It really just depends on the situation, but I would really think about what you would do if you had complications and were in a foreign country.  If you are ok with it, go for it.  Godd luck!

I'm so sorry for your loss.

With my second m/c and first d/c I had it preformed and 2 days later I was off from Russia to Poland via Prague.  It was exhausting.  Initially after the surgery I had no bleeding or pain, but by the time we were up in the air it was excurtiating.  Asprin helped a lot.

Enjoy your trip.  Poland was just what I needed while it lasted.

DH&I went to Hawaii a week after my D&C.  It was obviously a few days longer after my surgery than it would be for you, but my doc fully supported it, saying it would be a great way to DH&I to recover from the mc.

I had one on a Wednesday and I left for a cruise on Saturday. (We decided to do the D&C BECAUSE I was traveling -- I didn't want to be caught in Mexico and need medical care for a natural miscarriage gone wrong or something.)
