Has anyone else noticed that they tend to get really bad tastes in their mouth after eating/drinking? Idk why but recently it seems like the taste of food/drinks linger for a really long time.
@JJMNO1616 yes! I actually posted this in the symptoms thread a while ago. It's so gross! I've noticed it's getting a lot better, but the aftertaste of certain food (especially anything with sodium, like soup) is so disgusting and lasts for hours. So gross.
I experienced this a lot during the first trimester, although recently it has been better. I found that peppermint gum helped a lot.
  • @JJMNO1616 Yes, me too!! Mostly a sour taste. It is so gross.

This is very random, but has anyone used the CARE harness when flying with kids? I guess it's the only FAA approved seat belt for kids more than 30 pounds who won't be in a car seat on the flight.

We're flying from the east coast to Hawaii for thanksgiving and I just can't see making DS (who will be 2) sit in a car seat the whole time (like 14 hours of flying total- all day, not overnight). The cost of this harness is making me hesitate a bit, it just seems steep for something we'll literally use twice. Obviously his safety is worth $70, but I'm just curious if anyone else had an experience using vs. not using the harness for a toddler. Thanks!

I would actually use the car seat because of the long flight.  Let him get up and go for a walk every 2-3 hours but I found for my kids the car seat is way more comfortable than the plane seat!
  • @Puddlewonderful - I agree with @riversdoctor  in that the car seat would probably be more comfortable for a long haul flight. And are you renting a car in Hawaii? Might need the car seat anyway.
  • @Puddlewonderful   We used the cares harness a lot with my oldest child. Back then it was new and we got lots of questions when using it from flight attendants.  I had to travel a lot solo with him and carrying his car seat was too much for me along with all our bags.  My first was a difficult toddler. He wouldn't have sat with out the harness. He has always been on the tiny side and the plane seatbelt wouldnt have kept him in.  Many of our flights were international and it made traveling so much easier for us. We loved it and still have it. I think my almost 18 month old is too tiny for it yet. So our last flight with him we took his carseat on.  Ask around and see if any of your friends have a cares harness to borrow? I've lent ours out many times. You could also think about selling it after using it.

  • @riversdoctor @kmalls @mcb2016

thanks for the advice ladies! We'll be bringing the car seat no matter what to use while there (just as @kmalls points out) so it may be a game day decision whether to use or gate check it. I'm leaning against the harness but might start watching Craigslist/Facebook for a used one.
  • @ekendall09 I am not getting cramps, but HIP PAIN!! I didn't get this pain until way later in my first pregnancy!

I feel like all pains and symptoms get worse and earlier with each pregnancy!?!
  • @dccroc01 I had very strong cravings for lobster and green olives for a while. We finally went out for lobster last weekend. Since then that craving has faded and been replaced by one for big crunchy bagels.

@sarelizr We probably won’t cloth diaper this baby this time but We did CD DD 1 and I loved it. I wanted to in the beginning and then we decided against it. Around four months old She got chemical burns from paper diapers. Other brands we tried would break her out. So we clots diapered her until she was potty trained. It is a big expense up front but it does save money once you get going with it. Plus believe it or not, there’s a pretty big resale market for cloth diapers so you can get some of your money back.

    Me (33). DH (37). DD (2.2012). MCs x4. After 4 years & 7 months, due 4.2018!

  • @ekendall09 I had that with my previous pregnancies. Increase your water intake. That helped me quite a bit. I also slept with a pillow under my feet. Something about the slight elevation should help (I think...can’t fully remember three rational).
  • @sarelizr I planned to cloth diaper with my first, I did for a short time, still have all the stuff for it and want to with this one because it is environmentally friendly cuts trash bill and diaper bill! But it is a lot of work if you do not have a w/d at home! I wound up hand washing diapers and it was too much to keep up with!

@Mattel my DD also reacted badly to paper diapers, can only wear pampers! So I went from CD to save money to the most expensive diapers! It is difficult when baby's bum is sensitive to paper diapers!
  • So new question, round ligament pain, is painful right? Before I was just having these stretching sensations, but those weren't painful. For the past two days I have been having sharp intermittent pains in my lower abdomen. It was very concerning at first. What is round ligament pain like for you ladies?
    BabyFruit Ticker
  • @sarelizr I am definitely planning on cloth diapering - I've been collecting diapers from friends and off Craigslist for over a year, so now I have to wash them all up and figure out what I have so I can fill in the gaps. Would love to hear more CDing advice from STM+ who have used cloth :)
@linds0503 I have been having sharp, quick round ligament pains for a while now, but just this week I had a ligering sharp pain while walking, which was new to me. But yes, they hurt!

  • Is anyone feeling movement? I started feeling the little guy move maybe 4 days ago. Much sooner than with my first pregnancy. Finally a symptom I like haha

Idk what movement feels like even if I am! I think I'm still too early though.
  • @JJMNO1616 a lot of people says it feels like gas but I never really thought that.  That or I could distinguish the difference. With my son I was about 21 weeks this this time in 17 weeks.  You'll feel it and know it's movement soon!

I have!  I don't know why, bit I felt both of my kids move at about 13/14 weeks.  Which is crazy early, but there is no mistaking someone karate chopping your insides over and over in the same spot whenever a cat sits on your belly.  I have territorial little girls.

I've been starting to feel movement here and there, though I usually don't realize it right away. For me it always starts as what feels like muscle ticks. Like, you know when your eyelid spazzes out sometimes? It feels like that, but in your uterus. Eventually it turns into more definitive kicks, but I've for sure been feeling some muscle weirdness lately.
  • I have thought it’s baby flutters, but I can’t be positive.

  • For me, the first movements feel exactly like gas.  I think I felt movement ealier than 14 weeks, but couldn't tell if it was legit the baby.  Once I started getting repetitive tapping in one spot, I could tell it was her feisty little butt.

  • @kmalls Eyelid spazzing sounds like a pretty good reference!

I read last pregnancy to lie down on your back, gently press your hand on your lower abdomen and wait to see if you feel a repetitive sensation/movement. It helped me confirm fetal movement - for some reason, it is easier to feel with gentle pressure on your ute (either a kid or cat in lap, etc). And when I use my Doppler, I can already feel my 13 week-er squirming and kicking to try to get away. I know I could feel movement by 16 weeks last time but other than that do not have a clear memory of when it began; pregnancy amnesia is definitely a thing.

  • I *think* I felt movement for the first tI'm yesterday at 17w3d, but I haven't felt it again, so I'm not sure. It definitely felt different from gas - like a muscle twitch or like being poked with a finger from the inside.

  • Question (sorry if this has been covered somewhere): are you ladies getting flu shots? Not trying to open a vaccine debate, but my MW mentioned I could get it at my next appt. and I'm on the fence.
  • @hedgepig So exciting! that's exactly how it felt the first time I felt DS move. I was exactly 18 weeks and it felt like 4 definitive pokes from the inside. Can't wait to start feeling this one!

I work in the medical field so I am required to get it. My OB didn't mention anything to me about it in my last appointment so I am going to ask next week when I go in again. They offered to give me one at work but I declined it at the time because I wasn't out of first tri yet.

Oh shoot, I totally forgot to get my shot today at my appointment!  Arg!

I am a big believer in vaccines, and even if I wasn't to begin with, having a kid in daycare would have changed my mind really quickly.  Once they get in a group environment, you will be pissed they don't have vaccines for everything (especially HFM).

  • @mountainsmama Just got mine a few hours ago at my monthly appointment. I was supposed to get it last month, but we got gabbing and totally forgot. Everything I have read and heard from my OB support the vax, especially after your first trimester. We have already had our first few confirmed cases of the flu in my area. Also, remember it takes about 2 weeks for the shot to fully protect you.

Yes!  Flutters that feel definitively different from the gas pains I've had for almost this entire pregnancy.  Began a few days ago.  And one or two karate chops. So exciting.

  • @mountainsmama I got mine at my OBs office at 15 weeks. I did end up sick after but I think I was bound to get a cold anyway since everyone I knew had it.
  • Just stopping by to whine about my sudden carpal tunnel. I had horrible back pain for 5 days and literally the moment it goes away my wrist is now killing me! I'm feeling very sorry for myself today.

Anyone else have pregnancy induced carpal tunnel and tips for relief? Tylenol and ice do nothing so far.
  • @Puddlewonderful I know @Sissy42 was dealing with this really bad. If I remember correctly she was waitng to actually get an injection to help with the pain. She had to see a specilist for it though. So sorry to hear you are dealing with this!
  • @Puddlewonderful, the carpel tunnel... I'm so sorry. It hurts!! I went to see a sports medicine specialist who gave me a brace that has helped SO much, but it makes it hard to do anything. He told me as soon as I feel like the pain is bad enough, to come in and he'd give me an injection to help manage the pain. Based on the x-rays and the other little things he did during the examination, he guessed it wouldn't be too long before I asked. Given the way this week has gone, I think he's right. The brace at night has been the #1 biggest help so far. Tylenol doesn't do anything - and so I quit taking it, figuring it was doing more harm to baby than good to me. I recommend asking your PCP what he/she thinks, and seeing if they'd refer to you someone who specializes in wrist/hand problems. So sorry you're dealing with it too!!
  • Thanks @sissy42! I didn't sleep most of the night because of the pain that goes from my thumb all to way up past my elbow  :( heading in to my Dr's urgent hours this morning to see what they can do.

  • @mountainsmama the only time i've gotten the flu shot in my life is my time spent in the military when it was mandatory.  I don't consider it a mandatory thing.  DD and I are vaccinated, you don't have to be anti-vax to not want the flu shot.  I've also spoken about it with nurses and doctors.  The vaccine doesn't cover every strand each year, just the ones the feel are going to be more prevalent.
    BabyFruit Ticker
  • @ekendall09 I think why people don't consider vaccines mandatory is because they don't consider the bigger picture beyond themselves.  I hear "I never got vaccinated before and have never gotten it!" a lot, and it's painful to hear that kind of thinking.

For me, the idea that MY immune system is healthy enough to make the infection minimal isn't enough.  The thought that I could pick something up, not really feel much of it, and hand it off to an infant or a child or elderly person with immuno problems and potentially kill them is unacceptable.  Just 100% unacceptable to me.  I can prevent misery and potential death, and by God, I will do it.  I just mourn that I can't vaccinate for every single thing under the sun.

I also vaccinate because the immunity leaves genetic markers in my body that I can pass on to my children.  These kinds of markers could potentially protect them from a mutated disease that in my time was no big deal, but 10 years from now rapidly develop into a new bird flu or swine flu, or something worse.  Lacking genetic immunity is what killed so very many Native Americans when the Europeans showed up and gave them smallpox.

So yeah, people need to look at a waaaaay bigger picture than "I've never gotten flu without it".
    BabyFetus Ticker
  • @ngolimento I understand what you are saying and it does make sense.  I hope I didn't give the impression of "i've never gotten it and i've never gotten sick".  We all got it when we had two parents battling cancer and going through chemo, we did get sick that year (most of us) but I don't blame the vaccine for that, I understand that it doesn't prevent everything.
    BabyFruit Ticker
  • My work made the flu shot mandatory this year so I got it already. But the midwife I saw encouraged it since I’ll be giving birth at the end of the flu season and baby can’t get the flu shot so that will give some immunity.
