I occasionally volunteer at the local elementary school, and in the last two years my favorite names were:

Faces
No Fear

Yeah, you read that correctly.

To be fair, I live near a Native American reservation and, while I respect their culture, they never fail to impress with names.

@lund I get what you are saying about cultural names. One of my close friends is greek and she named her son a traditional greek name, Panagiotis. Her intention is for him to go by Pete but I cringe a little at how his name will probably always be mispronounced. I totally respect her cultural decision though and I don't think people should feel like they have to pick a more "american" aka white name but at the same time judgement based on names is sadly a very real problem.

I just saw a post on FB where a person named thier kid Brycin. Wut? If I were that kid when I grew up, I'd spell my name correctly on everything and not own up to phonetic ridiculousness.

@JJMNO1616 Agreed. It's a little tough to watch these kids have to deal with their names - one is in 6th grade this year and is CLEARLY embarrassed by her name. We do our best to tell her to be proud of her name, but I feel parents should think about this kind of thing when picking a name. And, unfortunately, a good portion of the Native American parents who's kids go to the school in our town are really big drug addicts... which leads me to think that the name choice had more to do with the parents' impaired state of mind than culture.

@ngolimento oh how speshul. Names like that make me want to dig my eyes out with a spoon.

I think parents don't think of the downstream inpact to their kids. My husband's mom was still on painkillers when she wrote his name on the birth cert, and she spelled it slightly wrong. It causes him SO MUCH trouble. Just this year there was a huge misunderstanding with our taxes because the preparer spelled his name correctly on our return, and we didn't catch it.

Coming up with creative spelling doesn't make your kid unique and special. It sets them up for discrimination and a lifetime of misunderstandings. Just do it to their middle name if you can't control yourself

I’m a teacher. My favorites have been Honesty and Bronze.

Bronze’s siblings are: Diamond, Golden, and Platinum. She really got the short end of the precious metals/gems lol.

Well when I was pregnant with DD I have always loved the name Riley but my mom suggested I spell it Rylie. I was like no, because no one will ever spell it that way when she gives anyone her name.

As a teacher, I actually haven't seen too many crazy names. We had a kid named Atrayu for a while. I mostly get a lot of misspelled names: Jazmin, Landyn, Tylar...

@growingournest I've seen that so much over the years across the internet as a joke because "the dash don't be silent!" I always thought it was fake, but I guess people adopted it, lol.

I forgot to say: I had a nurse or med. asst. at my Dr office and her name was Licorice. I may have asked her if she was cherry flavor.

Isis really isn't that uncommon of a name in other parts of the world and it actually has a beautiful meaning. Sadly it's been ruined and a lot of innocent women have to live with the negative connotation now.

I can chime in on this one - my name is Lindsye, which has the usual pronunciation but variant spelling. When I asked my mom for the reason behind my name growing up, I *swear* she told me it was a family name. When I asked again when I was older (probably college-aged) and she was distracted, she said "your dad really liked it. Honestly I think it's because he had a thing at the time for Lindsay Wagner." She went on to say the variant spelling was just because she wanted it to be "different."

Ok awesome, so I'm named after someone my dad used to masturbate to and in order to get Siri to recognize my name based on the spelling, I have to call myself Lind-SIGH. Sigh indeed.

Weirdest name I've seen is "Chosen." His parents: not to give you a Christ complex or anything, but....

@lindsye - err, so about that ... I definitely pronounce your name Linds-eye in my head. It's just the way I read it every. time.

my parents were quite close to using the spelling Eryne (i don't think i've ever met anyone with this spelling) instead of Erin for no real reason. Thankfully they used the traditional spelling. They also almost named me Erin Elizabeth but didn't want my initials on my backpack to read EEK <----really looking out haha

I think male names are becoming a lot more popular for girls. Like James for example is one that comes to mind. So maybe it won't be that uncommon in a few years! My best friend's middle name is Jack named after her dad which is also a cultural tradition. She has a feminine first name though so I don't think it bothers her at all.
