@pebbledam Your gif made me lol. So real. As for your question, I think it depends on your body's reaction to soy and is largely a personal decision. I'm mostly vegan so I spoke with a nutritionist before TTC about my diet. She was happy to see soy in my diet because of the protein and calcium in it versus other "milks". She did encourage me to eat more whole foods, though, to avoid over processed foods and get the most out of my meals. Basically, even as someone who eats a decent amount of soy in their diet, the nutritionist didn't seem concerned and prenatal nutrition is her specialty.
Hi ladies! I intro'd in the Newbie Intro thread from 7/31. Just started temping this month, and so far it's been a disaster. From the past 6 temps I've done over the past 8 days, I've gotten four that are the exact same. 96.80. What am I doing wrong? I'm trying to do it at the same time in the morning after three hours of sleep, but I'm a crappy sleeper, wake up a lot at night, have a hard time falling back to sleep, etc. But it doesn't make sense that all of that would cause me to have the same exact number. I've been trying the thermometer at other times of day just to make sure it's not the thermometer, and I always get different readings. Any thoughts/suggestions?

@sandbar517 before you start freaking out, take a breath. If your thermometer is working properly, it's very possible that those are just the temps at the time. What you're looking for with BBT tracking is an overall picture, so don't get too wrapped up in a couple of temps here and there.
@lalala2004, it does, which is why I figured I was doing something wrong. @JennyColada, thanks! I'm trying not to stress over it, I just want to make sure I'm not waking up in the middle of the night for nothing!

@sandbar517. Yeah, that is weird when it happens, but if you're checking it at other times and getting different readings, it's either 1) totally fine and youll see something happen soon, or 2) make sure you're not accidentally hitting recall or something where it's just showing the last temp taken instead of taking a new one. :p. Cos that can happen too.
@BusinessWife that would not surprise me at 3:30 in the morning! But I'm pretty sure that's not it. I'm going to give it another few nights and hope it works itself out. Thanks everyone!

@sandbar517 my old bbt favored certain temps. Post-O I had 14/16 days of the same two temps but I was able to see a clear shift when using it over an entire cycle. So I wouldn't worry yet but if it persists maybe you'll want a new bbt? Hopefully you'll be able to see a clear shift!
@pebbledam Possibly, if soy consumption is worrying you. Better to have peace of mind. Did something come up that made you nervous about your soy intake?
@pebbledam that was one of the first recommendations from our Napro doc, was to eliminate soy. Claims it can create estrogen dominance in females (i.e. low progrsterone) and in males. :/
@SkilledSailor - Just 8 months of an empty uterus and my love of soy milk. @BusinessWife - I definitely think I err on the side of testosterone dominance (but I wouldn't go that far), so maybe the soy wouldn't be a problem with me.

@pebbledam if you can find Tempt hemp milk, the texture is really good, and so is the taste. It's in the non-perishable alt milk section (not refrigeration). If you're into nut milks (DH is allergic, so I usually steer clear, but occasionally I indulge/risk his life), I love Califia almond milk (the coconut combo one is especially good IMO), and the MALK pecan milk. One thing to note between those two, though, is that Califia prides itself on being one of the few nut milks that doesn't "curdle" in coffee, so you might like that if you're using it for that.
@SkilledSailor right there will you veg friend. Love my soy. I don't have much soy in anything other than tofu, edamame or miso, though (like nothing in random baked goods, etc., because I make almost everything I eat from scratch), and I have been sort of minimizing my tofu intake during the TWW out of superstition more than anything (I doubt 3 small pieces of organic tofu 3x/week is going to impact fertility lol).
@doxiemoxie212 - I'll look at those, but most other alternative "milks" don't have the protein content that soy milk has. I have trouble getting enough protein, so if need be I'll switch to cow milk even if it's not my favorite.

@pebbledam Califia actually has a protein specific one that I love ... though to be fair I haven't seen it since I left D.C. two years ago (that specific one) and I don't remember if it's soy protein... might be whey?
While down in my soy/estrogen/testosterone rabbit hole, I have developed another question: Can PCOS develop over time or is it something you have from puberty on? What I have found so far says that there isn't a correlation between night shift work and PCOS, but there doesn't seem to be a whole lot of research out there.

Got my BBT late so just started temping. Open circles are due to weekend wakeup being later than the last 3 temps. Why would a temp be going down like this during a positive opk timeframe? New to temping- I am struggling to wrap my head around it all! Thanks!!
@thisnthat314 you might O today and temp may rise tomorrow as O often happens 12-36 hr after +opk. Or it may be a false LH surge and you aren't Oing yet. Keep temping and HIO just in case. Hope you see that jump soon!
@thisnthat314. Pre-O temps often trend downward and then you see the spike/rise/shift AFTER ovulation. So that's why we can use temping to confirm that ovulation did happen, but not so much to predict prior to ovulation, when it will happen... ;)
@pebbledam Fair enough. The only soy I have is soy milk in my coffee every morning and then there's trace amounts in a couple of my prepackaged snacks. Everything else I make I use coconut milk. Maybe if soy milk is your thing, try to avoid added soy in other foods you eat?

OPKs will show you when you're O'ing or gearing up for it, BBT will show you that you've O'd after the fact. So, don't expect a positive OPK and a temp spike on the same day - the spike would be a day or two after the positive OPK.
Hey, I missed this discussion yesterday. Both my RE and my endocrinologist (for a thyroid problem) recommended I eliminate soy. The cycle after I did, my luteal phase got a day longer (I have LPD) and my period got less clotty. My TSH levels also stayed more consistent. Apparently soy mimics estrogen in your body, so if you're sensitive to it or have goofy hormones generally, it can make a big difference. It turned out I am definitely sensitive to it.
I thought it was just going to be getting rid of soy sauce and tofu, but soybean oil and soy lecithin are in EVERYTHING. Chocolate, lip balm, mayonnaise, flavored tea...I went and cleaned out my pantry one day and it was pretty frightening. Ugh.
I don't think it's something to do your first or second cycle, but if you haven't been successful for a while, I definitely recommend trying it for a couple cycles to see if it helps!
@adirat. I would love to chat more about how you eliminated it. It's literally everywhere. We try to pay attention, but lots of times I just end up buying stuff anyway. :/
I had an endocrine attending in school that hated soy. He cited some studies, but the pdfs have been lost somewhere in all my computer changes since then (just looked). Since then I've tried to avoid the major sources (ie don't do soy milk, use aminos instead of soy sauce) but trace sources I haven't gone overboard trying to eliminate except for a brief time about a year and a half ago. It was so damn hard to get all of it out of my diet.
If anyone is interested, guittard extra dark chocolate chips are the best soy free chocolate I've found. They're also dairy free (but made on equipment that processes milk chocolate so depends on how sensitive you are).

Yeah, it's really challenging. The first thing I did was go through our pantry and look for soybean oil and soy lecithin. A LOT of food went to the food pantry donation bin that day!
I ended up swapping out a few things and abandoning a few others. If your grocery store has a healthy food aisle, that's a good place to look for replacements. At my Stop & Shop, it's the first aisle next to the produce and it has all the organic, gluten-free, etc., foods. Lots of things are labeled soy-free so that's where I found substitutes for things like baked beans and spice mixes. Basically all chocolate products have soy lecithin, so I found some allergy-friendly mini chocolate chips in that aisle, too -- the brand is Enjoy Life. They're delicious.
Most processed foods have soybean oil or soy lecithin, even the grocery store's bakery section and sandwich bread, so I started reading labels before I bought things. Also, a lot of teas have soy lecithin as an emulsifier -- I had to abandon all flavored black teas (I used to love Bigelow's Lemon Lift for instance -- full of soy lecithin ). There's a local chain similar to Whole Foods where I've gotten some tea and bread that are soy-free, but it's much more expensive than Stop & Shop so it isn't a place I could do all my shopping.
My parents sent me some avocado oil based mayonnaise from Costco, but I didn't think it tasted very good So mayo is the only thing I haven't found a good substitute for and now I go without.
Very random question, have any of you found rehydration drinks you enjoy? I was using the nuun brand but it has stevia in it, which I've been trying to avoid. Not crazy about the artificial colors and all the sugar in gatorade. I drink a ton of water but like to switch it up every once in awhile for something with electrolytes.

Thanks. Hmm, I haven't seen it around here...I guess I could go to the Columbus Circle Whole Foods to look for it but actually I would rather die than go back there...
@fishsticks-n-custard Thanks! That's helpful to know. I agree with @nitnat007 -- my doc suggested coconut water mixed with coconut milk (like an 80/20 ratio) when I had hyperemesis gravidarum to keep hydrated with nutrients.
@fishsticks-n-custard if you don't like coconut water, maybe try Maple Water? I don't know if it exists out of NYC (I have to assume it does? but I haven't seen it myself?) but I like the taste.... it's sort of like a verrrrrrry subtle maple flavor, and it has fewer calories than coconut water. ::shrug::
I love coconut water, coconut mylk, etc., though so I also think you should just learn to like that
Here's the mayo I use, Just Mayo. Even my non-vegan H enjoys it. No soy! I find it in health food stores but also in the healthy section of regular groceries sometimes.

Locally made chocolates usually don't have soy in it either. We have one place that is just cocoa beans, milk (real), and sugar.
As for coconut water, I'm with @fishsticks-n-custard . Never heard of maple water but I'm intrigued.
