@Katya1982 Thank you! I think perhaps the original post linking to a BI article was misleading folks into thinking this was not a true peer-reviewed research study.
The objective 3D facial scanning is a neat concept and it will be interesting to see how it may evolve and influence the early diagnosis of various syndromes. A touch more conclusive than all those days in clinical work where as providers we glance at one another after a patient leaves, going "Did that kid seem funny-looking to you?"
for those who don't have a medical/research background. This study states repeatedly that the alcohol consumption was associated with these changes. Association does NOT equal causation. Also even if there are statistically significant changes this does NOT equal clinically significant changes. The authors also note their findings were inconstant in each grouping and even in the binging group they had very few children with facial changes that fit with the changes seen with fetal alcohol syndrome.
I am not advocating alcohol consumption when pregnant but it is important to be able to read between the lines to critically evaluate a journal article.
I could not have possibly eye rolled my eyes any further into the back of head at all the responses about the female vote etc etc. This has become a laughable thread.
And I agree with whoever said above (I forget which username) that saying the Internet comes with expectations of snark and attacks is just ridiculous.

Hey ladies, Just a heads up -- I was browsing one of the other threads where there was a discussion of people getting banned for violating TOU. It occurred to me that it must be against TOU to post copyrighted material (it is, I checked) and that just in general it is unethical to post the whole text of the journal article on the internet if it is not public domain. Sorry if I am being kind of lame, but I don't want to get banned and, as someone who gives a plagiarism talk at the beginning of each class she teaches, I don't feel right about having posted the whole text. I am going to go edit the three posts down right now to display just interesting excerpts from the article. I am clearly not the best person to be making editorial decisions on a medical study, but oh well...
Hopefully the most interested already had a chance to read it in full despite the fact that it's only been posted for a couple of hours...
Lurker, but just wanted to add that I certainly aspire to the noble "bro mentality" the current US male president so finely embodies. If only my female driven cattiness would let me change!

Yipes! My post said "part of the reason" regarding the vote, which -agree with me or not - I stand by, it was not an absolute statement....and I certainly didn't call women "catty" and am by no means promoting a trump-like attitude or saying men are better/perfect/without fault. My point was that women could stand to be more supportive of each other and we absolutely won't get things like equal pay unless we join our voices together. So far, the existing women's groups have not been able to accomplish that, so something is missing.....I know part of that something is white men joining together to demand women have equal pay. How we get that to happen is beyond me.
Thank you to everyone who spun that around and turned it into a completely different statement - you kind of proved my point.
And to whoever thought that online didn't equal IRL: I work with at risk parents and hear them voice this fear over and over again as I urge them to seek community with other parents.....so yes, this is very real.
Thank you to those that have posted some great information regarding research and how to identify good vs sketchy, as well as the fact that often we have to start with 'we did a small study and found something interesting, we should find out more'

@PoeMasque Your explanation above makes sense! I was mostly joking just because I hate the current president so much and so desperately wanted the female candidate!
@megheaves was your mind blown that people weren't pumped about your 'gender guess' post? I can't imagine that was it, since I didn't see any mean behavior over there.
Damnit, I missed what she said to me because it was removed! This is what happens when I don't Bump in a timely manner. Can somebody PM me or something?
@MJDsquared thank you! Got it. @kvacmak could it be?! I feel honored to have gotten the ball rolling. Now that I know what she said, I think TB powers-that-be are still warning-happy. Mega-boring! And obviously somebody is salty for all the wrong reasons.

Glad someone appreciated Kundera's quote
