Strollers!

Has anyone started their baby gear research yet? I am a STM (DS will be 3.5 when LO arrives). I made the mistake during my first pregnancy on registering only at Babies R Us and didn't get the stroller i really wanted (which i didn't realize until after DS was a few months old).

Now that we are expecting #2, i really want to get the UPPABABY Vista. I have been literally dreaming about this thing for 2 years. I currently have a chicco system from BRU that i hate and never use. We usually use our BOB jogging stroller (but full disclosure, DS hates to be in a stroller).

Is anyone also in the market for the UB Vista, or does anyone already have it? I want to make sure that i will get the use out of it to justify the cost. I am hoping that DS will want to be in it a little more because it has a "cooler" look to it... or even use the piggyback skateboard on it.

I know it's early to think about, but Mama's gotta start saving!

@karacc18 I'm not getting a new stroller with this one, since I already have a ton doubles/singles.  But I did just get the Austlen Entourage and I really like it, very versatile and my 3.5 year old likes the sit and stand option. Though TBH my Bob (single and double) is still my favorite for long walks, its hard to beat the suspension and wheels on that one.

  • @KatieEl That looks legit! what an awesome stroller. Do you use all those configurations?

@karacc18 i've used the two seats in different configurations, the one seat + sit and stand, the one seat alone, and the one seat with the different cargo bags.  I haven't used any sort of carseat with it yet.  I just really love how small it folds up for a double, how much it can hold (I travel alone with the kids a lot so the cargo capacity is huge for me), and how easy it is to use.

I'm so excited to use the second seat in my Britax B-Ready, so I totally get the excitement!

I also have the Britax B-Ready. I got it with the intention of turning it into a double stroller one day. I love the stroller, BUT I will say that it is a bit heavy lifting it up into my car. I haven't really lifted any other strollers to compare it to though. Other than that, I love how smooth it is, all of the attachments, and the sleek design. I like really plain looking strollers, so that's one of the reasons I was initially drawn to it!
  • We used the Baby Jogger City Mini GT with DD and it is the love of my life. I will be getting the City Select Lux Double as my biggest $ purchase (aside from a new car) for this little one. I love it already! We are BIG walkers in my family, so it seems worth the splurge!

  • We bought the Baby Jogger City Select when we had our DD because we knew we would want another baby at some point. It's a great stroller and I will probably buy a second seat or the standing option for DD. The only problem I have with it is that it is quite heavy.
  • Honestly, I'm super stressed about stroller shopping. I don't want to spend thousands of dollars, and my son will be nearly 5 when this baby is born. I'm torn between just getting a single because he rarely uses one as it is, and getting a double because I want it to be "fair". Then comes the struggle of the weight limit. My DS is really solid and weighs about 54 lbs right now. Fast forward 8 months and who knows how much he could weigh? Ugh. So stressful. We're also probably going to need a new infant car seat... so I need to factor that into my decision.

  • I know a lot of people that have the uppababy and love it.  I'm not getting a new stroller, I have a 5 yo, 4 yo, and 18 month old and I can count the number of times we've used a stroller on 1 hand (and it's only ever been our cheap umbrella stroller).  We're upgrading our van with this one though which is a doozy of a price tag.
  • EagsEags member
@mamakassie2  We're in a similar boat! Or DS will turn 5 a few after this one is born and I'm struggling with what to do for a stroller. We all love to go for walks/hikes and almost always take our jogging stroller. By the time this little one could be in a jogging stroller though, DS will be 5.5 and it's hard to tell if he'll love it as much then as he does now (he will ride some and then get out and walk/run with us, get back in to ride, etc).

I'm also torn about the regular stroller - we have the Britax B-Ready. He'd definitely be too big for the 2nd seat option so I just don't know if I want to opt for one that has the option of a jump seat, standing board.

  • I'm torn on whether or not to get a double stroller. I love baby wearing so I thought of wearing this one while pushing DD in our Graco, but now I'm not sure!
  • KatieElKatieEl member
@schaze having a double stroller is definitely useful, that said I pretty much only used a single + baby wearing for the first 6 months or so after DS2 was born. If you already know you'll baby wear I think it's something you can hold off on and really stalk the sales.

  • @Eags I was researching the riding board option but he's over all the weight limits! It's so frustrating! Kid is built like a linebacker.

  • I have the uppababy vista and I absolutely love it! During my first pregnancy that stroller was the biggest thing DH and I argued about. He thought it was ridiculous to spend that kind of money on a stroller. I had done more research on strollers than I did on my car, so he was not and did not win that battle. DS will be 29 months when this LO arrives. I look forward to pushing them both in the stroller.

@mamakassie2 I haven't even looked at weight limits! But to be fair, DS is skinny - at 4 yrs, he finally just made it into 34lbs.

  • I'm a FTM and I think I'm already overwhelmed by all the options. I feel like DH will make most of these decisions because he loves to research this stuff and we have the consumer reports membership to look up reviews. Usually he narrows it down and I help from there. I get too overwhelmed with all the choices.
  • luckily i live in RI and am not far from the Hingham, MA HQ of UppaBaby, and they have a program where you can buy refurbished strollers directly from them at almost half the price.... but you have to call everyday to see what they have and they will only hold for 24 hours. Let the fun begin!
    BabyFruit Ticker
  • Thanks so much for the UppaBaby HQ tip - I'm a Boston FTM and had no idea this program existed. You just saved me a lot of stress!!

I LOVE my City Select. I got it after DS was born since DD was still only 18 months. I bought the second seat and the kickstand.and it made life so much easier travelling with the 2 kids. I love how it is single width so its easy (relative term) to get into tight spaces like doorways, elevator doors, etc.
@karacc18 I live in Massachusetts not far from the RI line (grew up just over the line in North Attleboro). I have never heard of the UppaBaby HQ refurbished program either - great tip!

  • @Tesskorb & @hminer4 - yes, my boss did that when she had her first a few years ago and i had no idea either. If you poke around their website, you will find the contact us/FAQ section that lets you know about it and has the number you can call. My boss said she called every morning on her way in to work and would ask if they got any vistas in the color she wanted in... lol.

  • We got the uppababy vista with DS and still love it. We used the uppababy infant car seat with it, very convenient. Plan to use it with baby #2. When we purchased the stroller we also purchased the adapters so that we could use it as a double stroller for the newborn and our toddler. :)
  • My best friend has a City Select, and DH and I have decided that we will be getting that - we don't know if we are having 1 or 2 kids, but we like that it's so adaptable going from a single to a double stroller!

Multiple cousins of ours also all swear by their Uppababy Vistas!
  • So now I've done some preliminary research...
Let's get down to business! I'm a FTM so looking for a single stroller. So far we really like the nuna pipa because of the whole safety feature part of the car seat with the tavo it can click into. The Graco Modes Click Connect also looks good.  DH likes the UPPAbaby vista but I don't want something that I have to take the baby out of a car seat when they are sleeping to put them in this. That's why I wanted a travel system stroller that they could grow into as a toddler. Plus, it's going to be cold outside and the less time I have to fiddle with getting them in and out of the car, the better.

@Talusia17 Wait, it has a car seat?!?

    ETA: pressed post too quick
  • I'm with @tryingfor1st .  As a FTM I find a the sheer number of options out there to be overwhelming.

I do like this thread in that it's giving me a good baseline to at least begin research!

I have been doing some preliminary shopping for baby gear, but mostly just in terms of the nursery at this point.  Pinterest will be the death of me I'm sure.

@tryingfor1st FWIW most strollers have car seat connectors you can buy, so that the infant seat will click in.

  • @TryingforBaby1 most of them have the ability to click in the infant car seat... the vista also comes with a bassinet that you can use in the stroller and then carry in the house if baby is sleeping. Although, i'm not sure how many people actually use that feature.
    BabyFruit Ticker
  • @tryingfor1st yes! They have the uppababy Mesa which clicks in the stroller without any adapters.
  • This is amazing! But now my options get bigger and I'm overwhelmed again. Also, why are these things the price of someone's first sh*tbox car??? Dang they are expensive!!
  • @tryingfor1st  That's true they are pricey. But you do get the tumbler seat, bassinet, rain cover and bug shield. Also it rolls very smoothly. It really helped to test it out at a store. Try to go see in person to compare with other strollers.

  • @EmilyLove25 Dumb first time mom question, but I know you're a runner. Can you jog with your current stroller? Or did you need a BOB (or do you go running without DD)? Note: I have not jumped into all of the research yet! I would prefer to get a tip and go with it if the reviews check out. I would totally drive myself into a hole if I started from square one.

  • I have a Mountain Buggy City Mini and I'm just trying to decide if I want a double inline or side by side stroller but I love the Mountain Buggy brand so I'm sticking with that. Lots of time to decide.
  • @libbberty OMG that is totally not a dumb question! You "technically" need a BOB to run. I actually never had the desire to run with DD. I consider running time my time... I love love my misleadingly named Baby Jogger City Mini GT, but OMG those BOBs are pretty nice too... I would start your search with those. Approved for running and obviously work as a walking stroller too!

  • I use to have the Chicco Bravo system and I liked it just fine. My car was stolen in February and I lost all my baby gear so we had to buy a new stroller. I found a really good deal on a baby jogger city select from a local mom and I purchased it since I knew we were going to start trying for baby #2. I absolutely love it. It's so smooth and easy to manuever. I also love all the different configurations with the 2 seats. I have used it as a single with my own son and as a double when we have the little girl I watch and it's perfect both ways. They seem to enjoy it too!
  • @EmilyLove25  @KatieEl  Thanks for the input! I'm just trying to figure out what is realistic. I honestly don't run THAT frequently...but have a feeling that with DH's work schedule (he travels M-Th), it might be the only option for me to get workouts in unless we somehow win the lotto and get a nanny. That said, I also want a stroller that can easily collapse and isn't beyond heavy in case I take public transportation since I live in the city. This feels like a huge pressure decision!

@libbberty we lived in D.C. When we had DS1 and we did the bob for running/longer walks (it just handles like a dream) and then an umbrella stroller for getting on/off public transportation easily.

  • We have the UB Vista (DS is 2 in June). We LOVE LOVE LOVE it. Worth every single penny. Our has gone to Europe with us twice and I couldn't imagine life without it.

With my older DS (15 in Aug) I had a crappy Graco. So so glad we have the vista! We aren't sure yet if we will buy the second seat for when new baby comes, or if we will just get the standing board for DS who will be 2.5 when baby comes.

The vista is super easy to collapse and we we able to use ours easily in Paris where we exclusively took public transport. It's not even that heavy which I loved. We had to carry it up and down a million stairs because wheelchair accessibility for the subway system in Paris does.not.exist

also if you plan to fly at all I highly recommend getting the travel bag for the stroller. We put it in the bag at the gates and gate checked it. UppaBaby fully insures the stroller against airline damage if it is in their bag. Which is kinda important since the airlines will only insure it for a few hundred dollars.
