Updated *TW* Anatomy Scan Results

Update 3/31: Had another follow up growth scan. Baby is continuing to grow, measuring about 10 oz now.  Still lagging 3-4 weeks behind our gestational age.  The microarray results came back negative for chromosomal disorders.  There could still be a genetic problem, but it's not something we'd be able to test for until after the baby is born.  We also have more clarity on the heart defect.  There is a rather large hole, the aortic artery is enlarged, and the pulmonary artery is either missing or too small to be seen.  These things can be corrected with surgery thankfully.  The baby would likely have surgery within a few days of being born and have several follow up surgeries throughout its life, but the overall prognosis is good.  Thanks everyone for your continued support and good thoughts as we navigate these diagnoses.

Update 3/16: Went in for a follow up growth scan today.  Good news is baby has grown since last appointment. It's about 7 oz now (was 4 oz before). It's still measuring a few weeks behind where it should be.
The bigger concern is that the heart looks abnormal.  The doctor couldn't pinpoint exactly what is wrong, but he said there is a problem with the aortic and pulmonary arteries - they are not in the location he would expect.  So we are going to a specialist to get an echocardiogram next week.
The other problem is they couldn't get enough fetal DNA to do the chromosomal microarray from my amniocentesis.  He said they are still trying, but we don't have the results yet.  He still suspects a genetic issue and was hoping the microarray would give us more info.
So basically we are still in limbo as of right now.

Update 3/6: Just got a call with preliminary amnio results.  The results are negative for Trisomy 18, Trisomy 21, and Down Syndrome.  I do have an elevated alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) level, about 5 times the average.  Typically this is caused by either a spinal or neural tube defect in the baby or a placental issue.  Based on my numbers, they said that the probability of a spinal or neural tube defect is low.  It's leaning more towards a placental problem.  I should have the rest of the amnio results in about a week.  Overall I am definitely taking this as good news!

Original post:
We had our anatomy scan this morning and unfortunately things do not look good.  Baby has severe growth restriction and is measuring about 4 weeks behind where it should be.  The doctor thinks it could be a genetic abnormality.  I had an amniocentesis done and should get the results late next week.  He can't say much diagnostically right now, but he did say I have a two vessel umbilical cord instead of the typical three vessel cord.  There was nothing obviously wrong other than the small size.  They couldn't get a very good look at most things because of baby's positioning and lack of growth.

Please keep my husband and I in your thoughts.

  • I'm so sorry you got this news @SpongeWorthy. I hope it's the umbilical cord flow and not a genetic problem. Baby may be small but hopefully can cook in there long enough. Plenty of strong IUGR babies out there and I'll be rooting for your little one. Sending massive hugs through these incomprehensibly hard times.

  • This breaks my heart because in a way I know what you are going through, anxiety wise. However it sounds like the growth restriction is due to the two vessel cord, and I am hopeful that with enough time in there, that your baby will be able to grow enough to be delivered healthy albeit small. Steroid injection may be given to speed up lung development, and there are so many babies born healthy, but in miniature because of the medical advances around today. With proper monitoring, I really hope that this is the case for you, and praying for you, your DH and your baby!
