Going Home Outfits

What is everyone planning to bring for their baby to go home from the hospital in? Bonus points if you share a photo!

I'm in NC and the weather will be warm and possibly humid in late May/early June, and I have no clue how to dress a newborn based on the weather. Do you still want to put them in long sleeves/pants or one piece sleepers?

Also what sizes do you bring as options? Preemie/newborn/0-3 months? Thanks for helping out a clueless FTM!

Re: Going Home Outfits

  • I have three options that I'll bring with me. Most likely I'll put her in the 0-3 month sleeper. My mom bought me a really cute sleeveless romper in 0-3 months that I'll only use if it's really hot. I also have a newborn outfit just in case she's a lot smaller than her brothers. I think the one piece sleepers are always appropriate and baby won't be too hot as long as it's not a fleece material. You probably want to bring 2 sizes, newborn and preemie if you think baby might be small, or newborn and 0-3 if you think baby might be big.

  • I'm gonna get something from oh so Vera for each sex and that'll be their debut picture outfit/going home outfit and then I'll just have a bunch of pjs for just wearing while we're in the hospital.
  • I will likely just take NB size. DS was full-term 6lbs 12oz and fit into it perfectly with some room to spare. He was 3 weeks old before I could even think about putting him into 0-3 months (and they weren't a very good fit until 5 weeks).

It's hard to find short sleeved outfits for newborns! I'll probably just order something off of Etsy to wear home, and cute sleepers and bodysuits/pants in the hospital.

DS was born in April, so we got him a NB long sleeved one piece outfit from Ralph Lauren. As cute as it is, it's just too warm for June here.
  • I'll bring two sleepers with a little hat. Even though it will be warm out, the air conditioner will be on in the hospital and car, so I want those little skins covered! I'm bringing newborn and 0-3 months. Neither of my kids fit into the newborn but every baby is different. I only brought newborn for dd and daddy had to go home and get another outfit because we couldn't even close the one I packed. Whoops!

I'll be bringing a long sleeved gown with matching hat. I like the monogrammed ones from etsy. Even though it'll be summer, the AC is always on so we pretty much exclusively use long sleeves and either gowns or pants. I love the gowns for convenience with all those diaper changes, and will add little socks if I can get them to stay on.

DD was 7 lbs at birth and wore size newborn for at least a month, if not longer, so unless this one is measuring huge, that's what I'm bringing.
  • I recommend two outfits bc my son peed through his going home outfit as we were leaving. I will bring newborn and 3 months. DS was over 8 lbs so newborn was a bit snug.
I dont have an outfit yet but I did order this hat from Etsy. Not sure if shell go home in it or not. We plan on going home hours after delivery so I probably just get a sleeper to wear.

My twins were winter babies so we did a onesie under a light fleece sleeper along with earflap hats that I made them... I had cute white and baby blue accent outfits, all matching booties, hats, sleepers that DH's aunt gave us but they were 3M and too big, even though my boys were both over 7 lbs.

ETA: This time around I anticipate it will be hot but I still want the baby's skin covered.  A super soft, lightweight, breathable sleeper (e.g., bamboo) and lightweight hat... or maybe a onesie and pant.  Just not a huge fan of pants on a newborn.
  • @JAGinMI OMG I might have to retract my statement and break my own rule about pants on newborns!  What brand or where did you find this?!?

  • I'm planning on bringing a few outfits in NB and 0-3. My son was born about 8 lbs but lost a lot of weight in the hospital then struggled to gain it back he was in NB for about 6 months.
  • I will bring one white onsie. But most likely the shirt and diaper that I get from the hospital.
  • I don't enjoy pulling things over a newborn baby's head or putting pants on one with an umbilical cord, so i will bring some kind of sleeper or snap-up romper with the snaps off center around the belly. Definitely newborn size, because dd was just under 7 lb. I figure if this baby is huge I'll have a couple days to send someone to the store or home to grab  bigger outfit, but it seems really unlikely.
  • It will be likely hot here, so probably just a onesie and hat like this, but short sleeve and I have some little pants.

  • Unless Victoria takes after her Daddy, she will be going home in this newborn outfit, and we will wrap her in a light blanket for the car ride home... June in Nashville can easily get into the 100s. We still have to pick out a 0-3months going home outfit in case she is on the larger side.

  • I had two September babies and I had them both in a short sleeve onsies, pants, hats, and covered them in the carseat on the way home.

I just bought these for hospital outfits. I got a 0-3, DS was over 8 pounds and all I had were NB onsies for him that were too small.
  • With DD3, I brought 3 going home outfits - newborn and 0-3 month sizes.  All custom made... NONE of them fit.  She was 6 lb. 10 oz. at birth, but by the time we left the hospital she was down to 5 lb. 10 oz.  My sister went out and found a preemie outfit which still swallowed her.

With this child, all I plan to do is have a hat/toboggan monogrammed and put them in a plain onesie to come home.

  • @itsfine We took a ton of pictures of DS in his going home outfit, so for us a special outfit is more for that reason.

  • @alm52386 I couldn't resist the same outfit when I saw it!

I haven't given this much thought yet but I'll probably do something cute from Etsy.

  • I will probably just do a light sleeper on the way home but I'm gonna get some type of cute matching outfits for him and my 18 month old to take pictures in when he is first home. sidenote you know you have turned into your mother when you can't wait to match your kids clothes. My mom did it with me and my sister and we hated it and here I can't wait to do it with mine lol.

I really want to splurge on this but I know it is so stupidly ridiculous because it is $60 and will hardly get worn! I am trying to justify it by telling myself that we need nothing for this baby so why not get something absurd?! My babies were full term, 7.9 and 8.9,  so I am going to go with NB size for whatever we do.

This may be on AliExpress for a fraction of the cost. I will check for you!

  • @JAGinMI it's China cheapies, majority of kids boutiques get their items in bulk from these sites and then sell them as if they are handmade. Clothings sets for like $5 but the only downfall (other than it being from china, some people don't like that) is that they can a month or two to be delivered. I buy lots of stuff from aliexpress no shame!
  • @itsfine our hospital stuff is always things I use at home as well.  But I'm all for sleepers on the way home and for the better part of the first 4 months!
  • I just bought a bunch of stuff from aliexpress. I'm a little bit nervous because I got a lot for $40 and free shipping, but I'm excited. I even found the blackberry hat! If it works out I might have a new addiction

I have a huge addiction but it's very easy on the wallet. I am part of the Ali kids Facebook page and it's easily hands down my favorite group!
  • @itsfine I just spent an hour on Aliexpress. I'm team green, and I have never until this moment wanted to know the sex of my baby. I have an outfit for dd for summer in my cart in her size and  0-3 month size because I weirdly have just now become a person who wants to dress her (potential) daughters in matching adorable outfits. I want to buy it so much, but it is so stupid!
