Re: Weekly Randoms 2/13

  • I'm a second time mom and a friend is offering to throw a shower for me since we just found out we are having a girl (first was a boy). I had a really big shower for my first. I am excited that she offered to throw one just because it's a nice gesture but my gut says I shouldn't, having a second would just look selfish. Any thoughts?

  • @neludelu I think if your friend is happy about your baby and wants to plan you a party to spread that love and excitement for your new little one then why not?
  • I agree with @Wearmi1 let her throw you a small party.

  • @neludelu I would just tell her that you would like to keep it small and let her do it. We do "sprinkles" for all babies after #1 in our family and they are mostly to give the mom something for herself, clothes (especially if a different sex from first), and diapers. We just keep it to close family and friends so it's never more than like 15 people and it's really nice for the mama.

@soontobemrsdavis I am on #3 and have never felt them! I bet that is weird!

  • I fill in once or twice a week at an in-home daycare. 2 kids were out last week with RSV, one had bacterial pneumonia, another had a bad ear infection and the rest have colds! I'm supposed to work this afternoon but I'm super concerned about all those germs!

  • DH applied for a job back home last week. It would be crazy to try to sell a house and move before this baby comes along, but we'd love to be back. Now I'm stuck in the position of not knowing whether to get the house ready to sell, or decorate the way we like.
  • The baby was super active on Saturday and not as much yesterday or so far today.  I still have felt movement here or there but this is the first time in weeks my PGAL brain is going to worst case scenarios and I hate it.

  • @neludelu I think a small event is ok if offered, under the following circumstances: call it something other than a "shower," which implies large gifts (like a "sprinkle" or "tea" or whatever), either don't attach registry info to the invite or attach a registry with only small items on it (diapers, clothes, books, etc), and keep it very small - only really close family/friends.  I mean presumably you don't NEED anything large anyway, but I had a girl less than 2 years ago and am having another girl and still made myself a private registry of stuff I need and some of it is on the pricier side (another monitor, another diaper pail, etc).  I wouldn't ask people who got you gifts the first time around to cover another pricier item this time.

Our parents keep wanting to buy us larger things again this time, and I don't really need many larger things, so they're getting annoyed...haha.  Like DD all out refuses to sit in a stroller right now, why would I ask someone to spend $200-400 on a double stroller i'll possibly never use?  Maybe i'll ask for some more convertible car seats, that would be valuable since I suspect they'll both be in convertible seats at the same time for a while.  The monitor would also be helpful I guess.

  • @soontobemrsdavis When I was pregnant with DD she got hiccups all the time and for some reason I loved it.  It just feels so weird and cool I think.  I haven't felt them yet with this baby but I'm waiting for it.  Interestingly, DD still gets hiccups all the time so maybe she is just prone to them for some reason.

  • @alm52386 I'm down in Bloomington.
  • @neludelu, I don't think there's anything wrong with that. I think that's a nice gesture, but I agree with keeping it more intimate.
  • @FSUNole31 hoping for the best and thinking of you!
That happened to me last week. I usually feel the baby move 10+ times at work and 10+ at night. Last Monday I didn't feel a single movement until after 10pm and barely anything then. I was fairly concerned, but baby was super active the next day!
  • @FSUNole31, FX baby is just having a lazy day. Hopefully after lunch or something LO will get to moving.
  • I'm trying to write a Valentine's note for DH. I am having the hardest time - it's terrible! I love the man dearly for so many reasons but I am oh so bad about putting feelings into words. And words of affirmation is his love language.
  • DH and I got in a huge fight last night about his job and a guy he works with (we know him personally before he started working with DH, I told him not to get him the job because he is a very dishonest, selfish individual - it's really a long story) and it has lasted through today...  Right in time for Valentine's day.  The thing is I know I am being hormonal about most of it (and I told him that), I just want him to cut me some slack.

  • @neludelu my bestie brought this up to me too, except we are having another boy. She told me she wanted to have a small get together since I didn't get to attend any of my showers for DS (hospital bed rest).
Although it's a loving gesture...I'm not sure I can bring myself to do it, even if it is called something else. I guess if she decides to surprise me with a very small get together, there's nothing I can do...but I'm thinking I am going to politely decline.

  • @ladylolly89 Maybe do like a "relationship in review" type of thing where you describe a few of your favorite moments together/few of your favorite things about him (that would mainly only apply to you and not the world) and then end with something like being excited/grateful/etc that you get more of those moments together?

  • @meilay I did finally manage to write something, but this is a great idea to keep in mind too! Thank goodness he knows me well enough to know that words don't come easily.
  • I *finally* picked furniture for the nursery and a travel system for the baby. At almost 22 weeks I feel like I'm dragging behind some of y'all! It just took me some time to be comfortable with my options. I was at babies r us for two hours yesterday.

I still don't have a theme for the nursery or any decorating ideas though. Baby steps!
  • Hugs @FSUNole31! My brain always goes to the worst case scenario when baby isn't overly active too. PGAL brain is a b*tch.
  • We're headed to Great Wolf Lodge tomorrow for a little family getaway before baby comes. It just dawned on me this afternoon to try on swimsuits and I quickly found my boobs were basically pornographic in what I owned so I had to go shopping. If that wasn't a brutal experience. I finally found a couple tops that were family friendly, but I must say that was the least enjoyable shopping experience I've had in a while.
  • My 15 month old DS is flying with my mom right now to Oregon to stay with my parents for a week. He travels really well and loves his grandma, but I'm a nervous wreck and I bawled my eyes out when I had to leave him. I'm a SAHM and 3 days is the longest I've ever been away from him. I'm just trying to be grateful for a week alone with DH.

This made me lol. We put up a barrier on our railing and I wasn't sure our marriage would survive. Good luck to you guys. ;)
  • @Wearmi1 Good luck! We ended up doing some highly detailed sketches and measurement for DD's room (there were a LOT of them!) When we moved 9 months later, we were much more haphazard

After an entertainment center caused a crisis in '13 we agreed that I am to leave the house while furniture is being put together. Good luck to you.

  • My kids had their first teeball practice tonight (my daughters first season).  I am already wondering how I am going to get through the season.  I loathe doing things after work, especially when we don't get home until 7 or a little after.

  • I have hosted sprinkles for a couple of girlfriends and each has been more of a "girls night out" for the mom-to-be.  We've done pedis, a nice dinner out, fancy dessert bar... that kind of thing.  People have brought presents if they feel inclined.  Last time I got my bestie some goodies just for this baby... trying to make his arrival as special as her first!  To each their own, but I know my friends and I have loved doing these for our mama friends.
  • All you ladies with your stories about disasters with putting furniture and stuff together make me laugh.  My hubs just tries to wing stuff and not read the directions and I end up wanting to rip my hair out because of it.

I totally feel you. I have a hard time committing to weeknight stuff for this very reason. I signed up for a 6w dog training session on Wednesday evenings and quit going after 3 weeks because I couldn't take the commitment. Weekdays are long enough without activities added onto them!

  • Just watched Fifty Shades Darker! Who has seen it? I liked it. I would never cheat on Henry Cavill, but if I did, it would be with Jamie Dornan. He looks so hot in this one.

Wasnt a fan of the books, but I like the movies, cheesiness and all.
  • I put together everything in our household because of my H's tendency to just use his strength to jam things together until it reasonably works.

The major reason I chose my daycare center is that once the kids turn 2 you can pay extra to have them take the kids to soccer, gymnastics, and dance classes during the day.  Major bonus that I won't have to do that myself after work until they're in kindergarden.  The gymnastics and dance place is right next door and the soccer people come to them.  It's awesome.
  • I also hate after school activities. Yet we have something we have to do 3 out of the 5 school days (2 are therapy and 1 gymnastics). And I'm considering adding in another day of gymnastics. Mostly because my daughter LOVES it and it's only 5 min from our house. She really liked tball and soccer but sitting in the sun huge and pregnant entertaining my 2 year old sounds horrible. My husband doesn't get out of work until 6 most nights so he is no help.

Mom to Madison- 5 and Lillian 2....and now surprise baby #3!
