Re: FFFC 2-3

  • @NotAPlaya-JustCrushAlot I do plan on using oils with baby, but if thats the case, ill wait till 6 mo to diffuse. As for topically, i wasn't planning until they get older.
Good call. I wasn't singling out a fellow scrunchy mom.  I thought the EO opinion was the easiest to address since the folks mentioning on the thread fell into the scrunchy category instead of the anti-vax category.  I generally distrust anything EO, but since they wont affect herd immunity, it's a "you do you" thing.

Haha, that's a good point about herd immunity. I'm sure you saw my shpeal there about the EO. I love ours. I'm not about to trust some oil over actual medicine if needed though. I had a friend who is super crunchy and would give me a hard time about taking advil for headaches. she'd suggest alternative medicines. Um...you try having a debilitating tension headache and killing it with some herbs and what nots. Not happening.

I added a brownie order to our weekly milk delivery and forgot about it until DH went to get the milk off the porch this morning and was all excited. I was angry at myself for forgetting to hide them before he saw!
OH NO! Hahaha In that case you be gracious and give DH one and then hide them anyway!!!
  • @NotAPlaya-JustCrushAlot THANK YOU! Everytime EO's have been brought up with babies I can feel my bp rise. I totally believe they have their place, but on a baby is not one. It's a great reason why so much research with anything that starts to be crunchy needs to be done. I have a blend I diffuse when I'm super congested and medication isn't fully helping yet, but refuse to do so when my friends 5 yo is over because one oil shouldn't be in use at her age, no matter how innocent it may seem.

For those loving the Moana soundtrack, it is great and considerably better than Frozen. But when you have had it on a constant loop for over a month and your child demands that you only song certain character parts of the soundtrack you will be singing a different tune.

Also DD will only respond to being called Moana now and introduces herself as that when people ask. She also calls her dad Maui.

Bahaha. Our kids need to be bffs.
  • I miss out on a lot here, but reading through it made me super happy. I haven't checked out the crunchy thread, but I'm definitely headed that direction now! Also, "scrunchy" is the best term I've heard in a while. I would identify as scrunchy. I side-eye things that are too out there (see most of the topics in the July 2017 eco friendly thread)

Just curious, what oil is it?

@PartiallyDomesticated I'm not completely sure (it's been a year since I've needed the blend) but I think it was tea tree, although that one isn't so innocent is it? Maybe it was spearmint or eucalyptus...it was a minty one. If I can figure it out this weekend, I'll let you know.
  • I use my Vicks vaporizer befor 6 months if baby's is congested. It has the eucalyptus pads that help clear the congestion. However with that said I would probably get major side eye because it's not an actual EO and probably chemical filled . That said I don't rub anything on baby and I make sure it's never too strong. However DD was born in the middle of winter and went to daycare so she caught some colds.

  • @BeachMommy2B to be fair the only chemical filled thing in Vicks is the petroleum jelly. The rest is just eucalyptus and menthol (which shouldn't be used On a child under 2 even the vaporiser) I didn't know that till recently though so no side-eye from me. Under 6 months you should only use the vaporiser with no additives in it

  • I guess my FFFC is that I side-eye EO but love me some Vicks when I'm sick. I also use baby Vicks (which is supposedly ok under 2) on DD's chest when she's sick. I don't diffuse the Vicks for kids. I know they do nothing, but I love the soothing sensation.

I'd be skeptical about the ice cream.

I ate oatmeal with flax and brewers yeast like it was my job (plus fenugreek and blessed thistle and goat something or other) and it did a whole lot of nada.

But any excuse for ice ice cream isn't terrible!

I was just going to say that oatmeal and fenugreek don't actually work. That's not to say I didn't use it ask an excuse to eat tons of oatmeal chocolate cookies and no bake cookies post partum. I'll try it again this time, just for science.

  • @BeachMommy2B from what I've read and understand eucalyptus and eucalyptus EO are not always the same,  or any other EO. How it's used can get different active chemicals out of the plant, and obviously EO's are significantly more potent. If I had something that had eucalyptus in it that was safe on kids, I wouldn't hesitate to use it, but if it was an EO I would.
  • I actually have both baby vicks and a "natural" version of it and they basically have the same main ingredients so I would assume baby vicks is safe. I have always used it without hesitation.

  • Cocoa Puffs are life, right now. I've eaten 3 bowls this morning. I'm blaming it on the baby...must be having a growth spurt!
  • I guess I'm scrunchy too? I baby wear (Solly, Tula x3, RS made from CoK woven, water sling, and I have a woven I didn't use with DD that I'm going to break in and use for DS), I EBF DD 6 months and nursed until 23m (we were down to 1x/day when we stopped) and plan on about the same with DS, DS will sleep in our room in a bassinet/PnP/ etc. at least until STTN (we don't have a separate bedroom for DS), we don't CIO, we did nonscteen time until DD was almost 2yo, and DD wore amber necklaces on/off when she'd tolerate them. But we don't bed share, don't BLW, don't consider our style attachment parenting, don't cloth diaper, and DD now has her own tablet.

@NotAPlaya-JustCrushAlot I have a SIL who is the total opposite of crunchy, so yes the ice cream for dinner would happen at her house if that's what her kid requested. Same as giving her kids soda before the age of 1 (in a bottle :expressionless:). Her kids have no bedtime, SIL and BIL go to bed and the kids are left to do what they want until they fall asleep at whatever time they want. So I feel like even though that's "whatever works" for them it's not healthy or appropriate for kids. And that's probably backed by science that it isn't!

I really try not to judge...but total judgy-mcjudgeface right now over here. The fact that kids are left up unsupervised (depending on age I guess) is really worrisome too

Oh I FULL ON JUDGE her! Her kids are 10,6,and 3. But the "free for all bedtime" has been going on for awhile. Basically the 10 year old is left to handle the others. But the 10 year old spends most of her time posting selfies on Instagram (that her parents aren't monitoring). Which is also a huge issue I have.
Basically my kids won't be spending the night with their cousins, ever.

Omg. Count me in the camp of typically being "to each his own" but why bother having 3 kids if you aren't up to the task of raising them??! Wow. That would be so hard to keep my mouth shut.

MIL had a very hands off approach with MHs little sister who is now 19. I totally disagreed with her parenting style and so does MH. Apparently she's much different now than when he was growing up. It was hard to bite my tongue then but it was SO much less extreme than that!!
  • Oh @hp_momma & @ShadeofGreen816 I think we have the same SIL & MIL. But I just judge them. I don't classify them as not crunchy. It's just plain bad parenting!

  • I had never heard the term "crunchy" until this past week (hey, I guess that also qualifies at a FFFC). My H hadn't either, but he got really excited going down an etymology rabbit hole. I've never considered myself a granola person, but we do compost, we have our own garden and orchard, my H periodically makes his own kombucha and sauerkraut, and I hope to BF and plan on doing a lot of baby wearing. But I'm also pro-vax (100%), don't like the idea of co-sleeping, don't have an all organic diet, and I'm sure I'll let my kid watch tv an appropriate amount. I don't know, I guess maybe everyone has their own crunchy qualities. Although, with the re-emerging popularity of certain things like BF, maybe what's considered crunchy will change.

Yes, plain bad parenting. And my MIL complains about how "strict" I am with my kids because I haven't allowed any soda or make them go to bed at a reasonable time. Guess I should strive to be like my SIL more...

  • I mentioned coconut oil in the bf thread we've got going. I remember girls on my ep group saying to use it to increase fat in your bm but never got into it. I will say it was great on nipples and flanges for pumping. I also used it for cradle cap on my son per Dr google. We do organic milk and we really research baby sun lotion because the hormones can affect your kid.
As to fenugreek and brewers yeast it did nothing for milk production. Brewer's yeast made me so gross gassy and fenugreek made ds scream gassy. Ovaltine malt didn't do anything either. I had what I had and that was it! But I will tell you avocado I actually noticed a difference in the fat content of my milk.
I wouldnt call myself crunchy I just do research and make decisions from that

FFSC: I just went into the spreadsheet for the first time in awhile. I got sick of seeing all the potential lurkers (just based on last log in) that haven't participated on our BMB in awhile or are just AWs only. Sooooo I deleted a bunch of them. I'm stuck in the sorrynotsorry but I hope they're okay and still having a H&H9mos mode. Meh.

@sls I haven't seen you around for a couple weeks. You're the only one under active that doesn't have the sex posted so I had to lurk out of curiosity. I saw that the A/S was not handled well. I hope you had a good one since and that the twins are doing well.
I still have no idea what I'm having. Baby is a stubborn turd that won't show the goods. Doctor will check again on the 8th. That's also my glucose test...so maybe baby will be good and active haha
  • @sparkysundevil FX baby reveals their goods! Only three more days :)
