Re: Weekly Randoms 1/30

  • @fsunole31 I used to get the annual pass back before DD...I live in NC but would go down for random long weekends here and there when I could get a cheap flight, and I ran several of their half marathons and other Run Disney races.  But the prospect of dealing with the logistics of flying down there with a toddler made me prefer to go for fewer but longer trips rather than more short ones.  And I can get weekly park hopper passes from work at a decent discount, so even the reduced DVC member annual pass doesn't make sense anymore.  I think as my kids grow up I'm going to try to go every other year (which is what I did growing up) - it allows me to stockpile time share points and get larger and/or nicer rooms for longer time periods.  it is weird to me though that I haven't been there since March 2016 and won't be back until September 2017!  That's the longest stretch by a long shot since I became a DVC member in 2011!

  • I just want to say, as a daycare worker, I love all of you that keep your kid home when they are sick instead of seeing if the teachers will notice or not! It's so frustrating when one or more kids come in sick! Then everyone else gets sick, then the adults get sick... it's awful. I think I have a perma-cold and then I get something worse like once a month.

Also, I agree with reflux causing nausea. I've almost gotten up to vomit more than once at night from reflux. It sucks.

  • I have to go to the cardiologist for an echocardiogram tomorrow morning. I have mitral valve prolapse and emailed my dr asking if I should have it checked. I also asked if the baby's heart should be looked at more closely than what they normally do at the anatomy scan. They were looking in to it. I wonder if I'll just have a longer AS or have a separate specialty scan of they want to check it out.

  • @alm52386 - I'm glad you followed up on that and are getting an EKG!  When I was there, I sweet talked the technician to just travel a bit lower and so i could see little chalupa briefly again.

  • @alm52386 they can do a fetal echocardiogram which is about an hour long and will look at all parts of your babies heart.  I had one done on my little one a few weeks around the time I had my MRI.

I hope this gets better soon.

No worries... I'm kind of the same way... I pop my 2 cents in every here and there- but am nowhere near as active as I'd like to be. Especially when I get more than 20 comments behind lol

An ekg is with the stickies which just reads the rhythm of your heart.  An echocardiogram is an ultrasound of the heart to see the valves and blood flow

  • I spent the better part of my commute home from daycare and then a good chunk of dinner explaining to DS the difference between a deer and a reindeer and why he should not expect to see Rudolph anytime soon.  A giant mom thank you to those officials deciding to put these signs up in our town just a month after Christmas.

  • I'm in the sick-in-the-second-trimester camp too :( had minimal issues in the first but now I have bad reflux, food aversions, occasional vomiting and have lost 3 lbs. Not cool at all!

Had a long talk with DH this morning about my awful generalized anxiety. I am not sure he has ever felt anxious for a moment in his life so he isn't always the most helpful, but he was so sweet this am and really tried to help me work through it. And it helped.

Anatomy scan on Friday- hoping we can continue to be team green strong.

  • @Elyse1384 I feel like it is hard enough trying to explain they have to wait a year for the next year's holiday (e.g., picking a costume for Halloween, Santa coming for Christmas, their birthday...).  It makes it harder when neighbors don't take down Christmas lights or every kid in their class seems to be born within 3 months so they keep thinking it is their 'turn' again... I'd be agitated if I had a daily reminder that my kid would ask about Christmas every.single.day. due to a deer crossing sign...
  • @FSUNole31I'll have to bug you when the time comes... I had wanted to do Disney for the first time this past December but it wasn't in the cards for a few reasons (mostly this LO on the way and wanting to save up vacation/PTO that could roll with me to next year).

I just can't wait to take my boys, they would just love it... they've always been into Toy Story so that swayed me a little too... to wait until that new area/land opens - maybe it already is?
  • I woke up with an awful cold this morning... sore throat, cough, super congested, runny nose.  I thought SERIOUSLY about calling in for a few minutes this morning, but figured I would just suck it up and come in.  Sigh.........

  • @JAGinMI I always wonder the SAME thing!  There are women I work with that go 2 times a year with 2 kids..... We are in NC... So that is 4 flights (and or a 10 hour drive - gas), hotels, park tickets, food....... HOLY MOLY!  And they go each time for a week.

I went for a bachelorette party in my early 20s to Disney World with about 14 friends.  We split SO much of the cost.... hotel rooms/transportation/etc and I still thought it was insanely expensive for just me.

  • My anatomy scan is tomorrow morning and I can't really think about anything else right now! Any tips or advice for going into this?
  • I just did 14 days at Disney/Universal this past February for our honeymoon.  We stayed at the Disney Military resort that they have which was like 105 a night.  We also got our tickets through the military for Disney and Universal so that saved some major money for us.  We did not rent a car, we either walked or rode the Disney buses to wherever they would take us and walked from there.  We bought a few things food wise to keep in our room so that we saved money on breakfast.  Cereal milk and fruit are easy to get ahold of and that's what we mostly had for breakfasts.  Eating at the parks can be really expensive so there again if you can bring your own snacks which they allow I would totally do that.  Bring water bottles for everyone and just refill them throughout the parks.  I know Disney does allow payment plans if you book a vacation through them.  That way you can pay all year for your trip.  It is expensive but doable if you break it down into smaller monthly payments.  Plus Disney does have resorts that aren't that pricey if you want to stay on Disney property.
  • My FIL retired from ABC which is owned by Disney. He and my MIL have free life time passes for up to 4 additional people each. They get cast member discounts for hotels and almost everything in the park. My niece is 6 and has been at least 10 times. Its their family tradition to take the grandchildren for their first birthdays. I still think its crazy expensive though but I wont break tradition. ;-)
  • @wearmi1 my BFF's husband is military, and though we've never stayed at Shades of Green (because we use my time share instead), we have taken advantage of the military park tickets, and that discount is AWESOME. Now that she has a kid and i'll have two, I won't have enough time share points to get a villa with enough room that all of the kids to have separate sleeping areas (and they're all too little to share with each other for the next few years), so if she plans to come at the same time as me she's going to do Shades of Green. Now we will try to just bring our moms with us so that we have someone to watch the kids at night so we can go out. I got the time share 50/50 with my mom, so she's usually with me regardless, especially because 3-4 days is DH's max for Park Time, so at most he'll likely only be with us for a long weekend. Disney is SUPER expensive without things like ticket discounts and using the time share - though there are cheaper hotels on site, the DVC villas are full apartments which is so much more convenient when you're with kids and can keep and cook some food in the room, and we usually stay at one of the properties where you can walk to a park or two and not need to take the bus EVERYWHERE. To actually pay cash for a suite on-site is just so much money. I will never regret buying this time share, as i'll be able to take my kids there every other year without having to worry about lodging costs. The tickets are another story. But you don't need to buy Child tickets until the kid is 3, so at least DD will be under 3 this time and both kids will be free. It's about an 8 hour drive for us, so a lot of my coworkers with kids drive down, but we currently always fly because DD hates the car - I'm sure that will change once both girls are 2+ and I have to actually buy them each a seat on the plane as well as park tickets. For this trip, DD will need a seat on the plane but no park ticket, which isn't so bad. Assuming we start doing every-other-year after this, our next trip is going to be pricey unless we suck it up and drive.
  • @JAGinMI, girl, I feel you!

We took DD1 when she was 3.5, we stupidly went the day after the super bowl (it was in FL that year too), and boy was that expensive. We didn't even stay on Disney property because we had family in FL.

We are currently doing the Disney savings account and will try to go in 2019. Disney has a savings account online, you can estimate your stay, open an account, then when you have enough, book your vacation.

There's no way with airfare, hotel (no family to stay with now), car, tickets, etc. we could afford it annually.
  • We did Disneyland in May last year. Honestly, we used our tax return, without that there is no way we could do it. We also went a week before dds birthday so she was still free. We have a friend that works for Disney that got us 50% off Disneyland hotel tickets, otherwise we would just stay at the cheapest hotel we could find. We did 3 days at park, 1 hanging around the hotel pool and shopping. It really was an amazing trip. We really want to go again next February, but it won't be the same because we can't afford to go all out again. We will probably do 3 days, cheap hotel (unless our friend wants to help us again), and cheapest food we can find. A big savings for us was bringing our own presents for dd. We brought her princess dresses to wear. Secret cheap toys would "just show up" on her bed at night. I brought a ton of snacks and candy and water bottles. We spent $200 on gifts for ourselves, house sitter, dog sitter and grand parents, and little cousins. My dd was really happy just to be there she really didn't ask for anything while there, but she was only 2. We also drove because we live 6 hrs away. It was our most expensive trip ever, but my dd still talks about it everyday so it was worth it! If we can't go in February we will definitely go before he turns 3 so we can get one free ticket.
  • Question for those with kids in PreK/Kindergarten or older that have done Disney...

I only want to go to Disney during a non-crazy/low attendance period and I would need to take the kids out of school to accomplish that... I'm sure it depends on my local school's attendance policies but how do you get around that?  I don't think we'd even go for a whole week, just a few days total... maybe 3 plus the weekend at most.

If we can get the stars (and bank accounts) aligned, I'm thinking maybe a trip in April/May 2018 but my boys will be in the state funded PreK program which followed our K - 12 district's attendance policy... so I don't want to get slapped with truancy just to go to Disney for a few days.

@michaela0704 I don't have experience with that as a parent, but I do as a teacher. I'm sure it depends on your school and state policies, but here's at least an idea of how it works some places. The public school I worked in didn't do anything about attendance until a kid had missed 18 days in one school year. Parents would just call or send in a note saying the kids would be out and asking for work to take with them. It is a pretty big hassle for teachers, and everyone definitely gets annoyed about it, but no one would actually try to stop a trip from happening. At that age, I would think people would be even more understanding of missing a few days than we were with middle schoolers. I also think that in my state parents are not legally required to send kids to school (or register as homeschoolers) until age seven, so there would be no issue with truancy for missing a few days of prek. Even if there is a law/policy, I'm sure they get some defined number of unexcused absences. I would just talk to the teacher and see what they say. I'm sure it comes up all the time.

@JAGinMI we are super fortunate my MIL pays for my husband and my annual passes for our Christmas/birthday gifts every year.  My sons pass is 25 a month so when we add my daughter it will be 50 a month.  We go typically Sunday-Tuesday if we have time to take off from work because the rooms are better prices.  We stay in value resorts, this time we got rooms for 84 a night.  We pack a ton of food so we only buy our for one meal (usually dinner) and eat breakfast and lunch in the room.  We also live 1.5 hours so we don't have to fly and worry about airfare.   Adding we also get passholder rates on hotels and if we didn't have that we would at least get FL resident discounts which helps.

  • @fsunole31 @michaela0704 I went to Hong Kong Disneyland about 3 years ago, and they've had a dedicated Toy Story land since the park opened.  It was really really awesome, just super well done (the whole park was really).  It's larger and more Toy Story centric than what is planned in FL (I think the FL plan is to do a Pixar land more than a strictly Toy Story land), but if they do half the job they did in HK it will be really fantastic.
  • It seems like when I'm pregnant it truffles something in my husband to want to move. We looked at a house and had a buyer for ours and purchases agreements completed for both houses when pregnant with my son. It all ended up falling through (other property had $2mil in back taxes).

He he just called me today and found a house he wants us to go look at. So, we are going as soon as he is home. Is he nuts?!
  • @kassyfry DH does something similar... he puts in for promotions that would require us to move back to New England... so he got an offer last time but we would have to move/he would have to start no later than when Iwas 38w pregnant with twins - no family to help other than weekends... so we would either move, find new doctors, etc. or he would've gone by himself/lived at his folks, possibly missed the birth, and I took care of them alone.  Crazy.... what does he do this morning?  Let me know there is an open role in New England and wants to put in for it again... and he gets all upset when I said NOOOO! as it would put us in a similar situation again, just 4 years later. What is wrong with our husbands??
  • @EmeraldNC Yeah what the hell! Work keeps asking me to do things lately.  Pfffttt... the nerve.  Seriously though I'm about to lose it.  The past 2 weeks have been insane with work and my brain is going to explode.  I just want to sleep... and bump... but mostly sleep.
  • I have been off work today and yesterday and heard from some of my work friends how awful my students were.  I am so not looking forward to returning tomorrow.

  • @michaela0704 that would make me more made than my husband wanting to move! Especially after going to look at the house he found.

We need to do about $40-$50k in work to our house (100 year old farm house) and we already put $25k in it this fall. That house is also an older farm house. We would gain a two car garage, a second bath, basement, two more outbuildings, double the size of our barn, and go from 2 acres to 4. So, long story short, I'm pretty sure we are going to put our house on the market and try to move there!
