Re: FFFC 1/27

  • @L1C4gal: Tell me more about this cookie-baking hubbs of yours... what kind of cookies? Seriously every night? Like, just a small tray or a whole batch? (And, because I'm a snob:) From scratch or a tube? I need details.

  • She sounds like most of the guests that Jerry Springer and Maury Povich used to have on their shows. I'm also going with needing to be less old, because if this is still what's on tv then I definitely don't want or need to be watching more of it. And for the record, knowing the source still doesn't help me really 'get' it LOL!

It’s not that I don’t like you, it’s that I don’t know you. Stranger Danger.
  • Thank you @Jen_Shoes! My co-worker has been saying this for about a week and I had no idea what he was saying!
  • @starphish18, what's your breakdown of how much you need? I wish I had a guideline of how much clothes to get. I already have a pretty nice hand-me-down collection.

  • @kns1988 I looked at a couple sources online and kind of merged the numbers for what I figured I'd want/need for the age and weather. I could be way off base as I've never done this before, but here's what I figured would be a good starting point without going too overboard, especially since we never know how quickly they'll grow out of one size

    0-3 month: 7 short-sleeved bodysuits, 2 pants, 1 sweater, 7 onesie pajamas
    3-6 month: 7 short & long-sleeved bodysuits, 6 pants, 3 sweaters, 5 onesie pajamas
    6-9 month: 7 short & long-sleeved bodysuits, 6 pants, 3 sweaters, 5 onesie pajamas
    9-12 month: 7 short-sleeved bodysuits, 6 pants, 2 sweaters, 5 onesie pajamas
Plus, 4 sleep sacks/gowns for 0-6 and 6-12 months, 6 swaddles for 0-6 months, 7 pairs of socks (split by 3 or 6 month increments), a couple hats, some mittens, and a coat for winter.

My assumption is that baby will mostly be in bodysuits or pajamas while we're at home for those first few months. After that, I add more pants and sweaters, and make sure 3-6 and 6-9 months have some heavier clothing for winter.

STM+, anything I'm missing or have the wrong idea about?

@SKZW Oh, it's quite the affair. Always chocolate chip cookies and almost always from scratch, with a rotation of recipes. He eats 4-6 big cookies each night with a tall glass of milk for dunking and then chugging. Picture the break-and-bake packages that have 12 bigger cookies (rather than 24 normal/smaller ones)--he has the equivalent of about 6 of those each night (lately cutting back to 4, haha). The drama right now is that our batches keep turning out flat...I think it's our crappy oven.

I should add that he's super skinny! For now, haha...
So. Jealous. And not just the cookie part, the being skinny part, LOL. He sounds like a keeper   ;)

Re: flat cookies: sometimes the atmospheric pressure makes a difference... try boosting the baking powder/soda by a half teaspoon to see if that helps. Also making sure the oven (especially if it's on the fritz) is super pre-heated, like 20 minutes' worth. Like I said, so. jealous. There's nothing quite like warm cookies!
  • @WombThereItIs Good to know, thanks! The sites I was looking at suggested that would be the minimum you could get by with. But you don't have to tell me to buy more clothing twice.
  • @starphish18 I'm with @WombThereItIs the blow outs are real. And can happen more then once a day! I would definitely reconsider how many you'd like of each size  :)

  • Yes I would definitely add at least double to what you are buying @starphish18 I also would not be buying sweaters. I don't remember where you live, but these babies being born in May don't need a ton of layers. I would use swaddle blankets or a just a couple long sleeve onsie type outfits. (Again I think I have 3 total, but Texas is super hot). I would also have some "dressier" clothes for newborn pictures, baptisms, grandmas birthday, etc.
I'm also not a fan of taking them out without some
sort of shorts on with the onsie. I like to buy the romper type onesies, but that's just personal preference! Some people will take their kids out in just a diaper!
  • @starphish18 - This may be a FFFC, but I didn't even consider bottoms to be necessary in the early days! DS LIVED in bodysuits (and still largely does, though with pants) and you can never have too many. I know you shop around for good deals, but make sure you have a pack or two of SUPER CHEAPOS to augment your cute finds. Walmart had a 3 pack that I would buy in the next size up every time ours got snug.
  • @starphish18 your numbers seem practical. But when you are on the 4th change of the day (no matter how much you try there will be days like this) you will want more of each size. Also the sizes don't always line up with the months like they should. DD only wore NB for like a week, and was wearing 6/9 months by the time she was 4 months. At her 1st birthday she was already in 18months...now at 3 she is in almost a 5T. but I also know people who's kids were still in 6/9 months at a year old. its going to very depending on your baby  :)

@SKZW Thanks for the advice re: baking soda and pre-heating! We tend to add a bit of extra baking soda anyways since we like the way it makes the cookies taste (we've experimented a lot, haha) but we could certainly add more! And I'll try the extra/super pre-heating too. I appreciate the advice!

Yes, he's a keeper and I find the whole thing endearing. Especially with the backstory--his parents worked a ton (including evening shifts) when he was growing up and some of the only quality time he got with them was late in the evenings, and his dad would always bring a pack of donuts or something sweet for them to eat while watching The Simpsons together. Not healthy, but a happy tradition that stuck with him (and now me). We may not pass it on in full to our kids and we laugh about eating cookies in bed after they're asleep...but they'll probably end up participating some and having a sweet tooth too ;)
  • Sorry to hijack the fffc thread, but thanks for the advice, all. I really appreciate it.
Also, this is why I should just come to you guys in the first place instead of the internet.

In the house I didn't consider bottoms necessary, but I felt like in the car seat or stroller that the straps would rub their little thighs if they didn't have shorts or pants!  I think that may be something that depends on your child's proportions, though. Mine were always tiny, but somehow still had super chubby thighs.
  • @L1C4gal : I love that backstory! That's such a nice memory for him to have of his family time together.  :)  LOL @ eating cookies in bed

All of this cookie talk resulted in me (1) deciding to make a smoothie for lunch, in order to eat some cookies later, and (2) getting some strawberries out to defrost on the counter, and (3) going and raiding the pantry while I waited for the fruit, (4) then immediately eating the cookies without hesitation.
  • @starphish18 I'm glad you asked, and thanks to everyone for adding your input! I'm officially inspired to start a clothing spreadsheet :)

It sounds like you're off to a good start, however its hard to predict how big the kiddo will be since its your first. Mine was born around 50 to 70% then rapidly went up to 90-99% and has stayed around an average of 95% in growth. Basically we tried not to stock up on clothes on bigger sizes until after we had established a growth pattern. She was in 18mos clothes by age 1. Meanwhile there were some kiddos on my last BMB that were on the opposite end of growth and they were still not in 12mos clothes yet.
Second this! My kids were on the opposite end of this- under the 3rd percentile. Younger daughter is 15 months old and I'm planning to switch her clothes up to 12 month this weekend. (If I can motivate myself!) older daughter just turned three and wears 2T, although still some 18mo pants.

I tend end to buy larger sizes only if it is something that is either just so adorable I have to have it for my kid, or on a really good clearance. I do have stuff in my closet up to size 5. But, sometimes that way your kid just doesn't fit the clothes during the correct season.
  • @SKZW Haha I'm cracking up! That's a perfectly reasonable chain of events!  :D

Just to pop back to this for a sec. We have pretty cold, lingering winters. I figured I wouldn't need sweaters for the summer, but I assume they'd be a good idea come winter time, right?

Yeah. And hopefully this isn't something you'll have to deal with at all, but if you do end up having a baby who's a little early, they may have trouble keeping up their body temp and need extra layers. It wouldn't hurt to have a couple of sweaters handy.
  • Second what @squirtgun said it definitely doesn't hurt to buy one, but of course where I live I would never need it. Again it's all personal preferences! If you like to keep your house cold, you may find baby will be totally fine in long sleeve onsies in July.

  • Confession: I joined a Kickee Pants B/S/T group on FB, and between that and this BMB I get almost nothing done in life.
  • @starphish18 - I don't know if this is helpful or not, but during the newborn phase, we loved the little kimono type tops for DS overnight. Babies are usually nice and bundled in swaddles, so using something that had easy diaper access for middle of the night diaper changes was amazing. When he outgrew those (after like 3 weeks lol) we switched to the convertible gowns for bed time. Basically i learned that anything with snaps awful for overnight. It's not as bad when they get a little older, but early on you're having to change diapers at every feeding. Just thought I'd toss that out there as you're buying stuff!

  • @ChristinaWild: Yes! Those little kimonos! I had forgotten. They aren't the easiest to find but are def the best. They were my first go-to's with every batch of clean laundry. Our son's name is Connor and we called those things our Con-monos.  :D
  • Yes to the kimono tops as well! Carter's always had the sizes we needed and they are sold at BRU and Buy buy baby! They are usually more pricey on Amazon since I always have a 20% coupon for BBB.

  • So just the kimono shirts? What did you do for bottoms? Just diaper and a swaddle?

    May '17 labor memes
  • My recollection is yes, exactly, and no real pants.
  • It took DS's umbilical cord FOREVER to fall off, and I had heard that they shouldn't have anything down over it (cue panicked first time mom). He definitely wore the white, kimono shirts and diapers for WEEKS! It's funny because all of our pictures from that time look the same!

I'll be a little more adventurous this time around - maybe some printed bodysuits with the snaps left open...  :D
  • The kimono shirts as in.. side snap shirts? I've never heard of them being called kimono shirts!

Yes, I had to look it up on Amazon. We never had any for DD, but they look handy!

Yes! DS was born in late July in California... so diaper and swaddle. We did occasionally put the footed pants on him if we had the AC on high.

Yes! I heard gowns were the way to go at night for easy diaper access, but I'll definitely check out the kimonos, too. Thanks!
